IPL seek compromise in box row

The IPL is set to make its second major concession in a week, with executives close to a compromise with the South African provinces over the allocation of corporate suites

Alex Brown11-Apr-2009The IPL is set to make its second major concession in a week, with executives close to a compromise with the South African provinces over the allocation of corporate suites. Indian officials had initially demanded control over the boxes, much to the chagrin of their South African hosts, but a series of meetings during the week have resulted in the IPL softening its stance considerably. The dispute over corporate suites had prompted several South African newspapers to speculate that the IPL could be cancelled. That, though, appears unlikely, with officials from both countries eager to reach a compromise.”We are close to resolving this,” Andre Odendaal, the chief executive of Western Province, told Cricinfo. “The IPL had very high expectations initially, but after talking through the issues, they have been very understanding and reduced their request. The request now is very reasonable. This is about striking a balance between our own members, and making (IPL franchises) feel welcome.”We are all facing a big challenge. We are hosting the biggest cricket tournament in the world in ten days time. There were always going to be certain issues, but I think all parties have done a good job of working through those so the tournament can go ahead.”Gerald Majola, the chief executive of Cricket South Africa (CSA), was similarly confident that the dispute over corporate suites would be resolved.”CSA will look to uphold the interest and rights of all stakeholders,” Majola said in a statement. “Discussions are in the final stages of an amicable resolution for all parties concerned and CSA is confident that this matter will be settled soon.Should Indian executives agree to fewer corporate suites, it would be the IPL’s second major back down in a week. The IPL relaxed the prohibitive terms and conditions it had placed on non-rights holding media on Thursday, prompting major news agencies, including Reuters and Associated Press, to end their boycott of the tournament.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Morgan Sanson injury

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson is set to be sidelined for a month after injuring his hamstring against Chelsea in the week.

And, as to be expected, another injury blow has left plenty of Villa fans fuming.

Villa took to Twitter on Thursday evening to inform fans that Leon Bailey is set to be out until after the international break with a thigh strain.

Within their injury update on the club’s official website, manager Dean Smith also revealed that the French midfielder is set to be ruled out for four weeks.

The 27-year-old made his first start of the season for the first team at Stamford Bridge in the week but was replaced shortly before half-time.

Sanson has now made just 10 appearances for the club following his £14.22m move from Marseille in January.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul produced an unflinchingly obdurate innings of 147 not out, and Brendan Nash chipped in with his maiden Test century, as West Indies stood firm against a frustrated England bowling attack to manoeuvre themselves ever closer to their first series victory since 2004, and their first triumph over England since the days of Ambrose and Walsh in 1997-98. By the close of the fourth and penultimate day of the contest, West Indies were themselves scenting an incredible final-day victory push, as they reduced England to 80 for 3 in their second innings, with Fidel Edwards producing a vicious three-over burst in the fading light that culminated in the near decapitation of Kevin Pietersen with the final ball of the day.Nevertheless, Pietersen endured to the close on 34 not out from 27 balls, and so long as he remains, all four results will be possible. He came to the crease after the twin dismissals of Owais Shah, who completed another disappointing match by feathering his fifth ball through to the keeper, and Andrew Strauss, who chipped a return catch to the one-legged Chris Gayle for 14, having earlier survived an incredible appeal for caught-behind that once again brought the referral system into the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Alastair Cook also fell before the close, caught-behind for 24 to a nick so thin that no sound could be heard when that decision too was put to the third umpire, while Paul Collingwood survived a squeakingly tight appeal for lbw when facing up to his first delivery from Ryan Hinds. Then came Edwards’ customary late onslaught, which not only put the wind up England’s batsmen but also underlined the excellence of West Indies’ earlier accumulation. They built on their overnight 349 for 4 to haul themselves to within two runs of England’s first-innings total of 546 for 6 declared. England had begun the day with a measure of optimism, especially in light of the hamstring injury that had curtailed Gayle’s innings on the second day, and a couple of early breakthroughs might have allowed them to force the pace of the game – instead they were roundly thwarted by Nash and Chanderpaul, who emulated their feat on the third evening by batting straight through the first session as they extended their fifth-wicket partnership to an imposing 234.Nash, who has been a thorn in England’s side all series, was the first to reach three figures, for the first time in Test cricket. His statistics prior to this innings had not made for fantastic reading, 129 runs at 32.25, but his crease occupation has known no bounds. After resuming on 70 not out, he latched onto any width to slam five more fours in his innings, all of them through the covers, before flicking a leg-stump delivery from Monty Panesar gleefully through midwicket to record his maiden Test century in only his eighth Test innings.England’s bowlers never gave up, although their frustrations came close to boiling over on a hot and arduous day. James Anderson bowled a particularly fine spell, finding prodigious reverse-swing with the old ball and finally earning his reward on the stroke of tea with the wicket of Denesh Ramdin, but it was Stuart Broad who came closest to losing his rag. His final figures of 3 for 67 in 30 overs did him immense credit, but he had to be withdrawn from the attack by his captain, Andrew Strauss, after exchanging angry words with Harper, who cruelly called wide when an effort ball zipped over the head of the ducking Nash.Broad was eventually reintroduced after lunch at the opposite end to Harper, and all he needed was one delivery to make his mark. Nash faced up to a full-length delivery, angled into the stumps from round the wicket, and produced a rare error of judgement, as he nicked a simple catch to Collingwood at a wide second slip. However, that breakthrough merely heightened the resolve of West Indies’ other incumbent batsmen. Chanderpaul resumed on 52 not out at the start of play, and once again was content to nudge and fiddle his runs wherever they became available, having dropped anchor for more than six hours for his 133 not out. He did offer one opportunity, in the third over of the morning, when on 56 he flashed a cut at Panesar, but Matt Prior behind the stumps was unable to gather. Then, with his century still ten runs away, he appeared to edge a big ripping delivery from Graeme Swann, only for the third umpire to advise that the decision be overturned on appeal.England were not impressed, least of all Prior, who endured another tough day behind the stumps. He showed some swift glovework to stump Ryan Hinds for 23 when he dragged his back foot out of the crease while attempting to swipe Swann for six, but by the time the innings closed, he had conceded 35 byes, second among Englishman to the 47-year-old Frank Woolley, who conceded 37 at The Oval in 1934. England’s total extras, meanwhile, rose to 74 – only two away from India’s all-time world record, which they set at Bangalore in December 2007.Having survived that hairy moment in the nineties, Chanderpaul made no more mistakes. He crunched Swann off the back foot through mid-on to go to his hundred, then two balls later reminded everyone that he can bat in overdrive when the mood takes him, by slapping Swann over the midwicket fence for six. At the other end, however, England continued to chisel away – Gayle’s resumed innings was brief as Strauss plucked an astounding one-handed catch at short cover, Edwards hung his bat out to Broad to be caught behind for 8, while Lionel Baker padded up to Swann to be sent on his way, again after a referral, for a third-ball duck. That left England with 15 overs before the close in which to rebuild a lead that had been whittled down to a mere two runs. By the close, they were ticking along at a decent rate of 5.33 per over, but the three early wickets left plenty resting on the shoulders of Pietersen, Collingwood and Prior, the last three recognised batsmen. After three and a half days of less-than-gripping action, this match has finally burst into life.

Aston Villa: Fans fume at Matt Maher update

Aston Villa won’t entertain any late offers for midfielder Douglas Luiz and aren’t expected to make any further additions to Dean Smith’s squad.

That’s according to Matt Maher of The Express and Star, and his update has had a number of Villa fans talking on social media.

Villa have been fairly busy this summer, making four permanent signings at a cost of £95m while also bringing in Axel Tuanzebe on loan.

Jack Grealish’s £105m move to Manchester City has helped Villa bring in just shy of £115m in departures, but it could be a quiet deadline day at Bodymoor Heath.

Maher suggested that Villa won’t discuss offers for Luiz, who has been linked with a move to Roma, and barring any late twists, there won’t be a sixth arrival at Villa Park.

Villa fans react

Maher shared the news on Twitter on Monday afternoon regarding Luiz and Villa’s unlikely deadline day activity.

Here’s what some had to say in reply, with one labelling it as ‘disappointing’.

Gabriel Jesus has been superb this season

Gabriel Jesus has enjoyed a superb start to the season for Manchester City and is flourishing in a new role in Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Brazilian forward had to endure a summer of hearing that, following Sergio Aguero’s exit, Manchester City didn’t possess a striker in their squad and needed to add someone such as Harry Kane.

He was linked with a move to Juventus as the Citizens looked to raise transfer funds earlier in the summer but he ended up staying at the Etihad Stadium and has certainly proved his worth in recent games.

After starting on the bench in City’s opening Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur, the 24-year-old has started each of the last two matches on the wing and has seriously impressed in the 5-0 wins against Norwich City and Arsenal, contributing one goal and three assists.

According to WhoScored, only Rodri has a higher average rating for the champions so far this season, with Jesus tied with Jack Grealish in second after averaging a superb 7.85 rating in his three appearances thus far.

In the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, City have needed a creative outlet in their team and the Brazilian has certainly stepped up, averaging 2.7 key passes per game so far this season, a huge improvement on the 1.1 key passes per game he averaged last term.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

With Ferran Torres likely to feature at centre-forward this season, Jesus has moved out to the wing with great effect and looks set to be a key player in Guardiola’s side, keeping the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling out of the team against Arsenal.

The former Palmeiras man has come under criticism for his finishing in the past but looks much more dangerous in a wide position where he can best showcase his ability on the ball, so it looks like something of a masterstroke by Guardiola to alter his position.

The Spaniard certainly rates Jesus highly and sang his praises last season, dubbing him the “unsung hero” in Manchester City’s side.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

Certainly, after what will have undoubtedly been a tough summer for Jesus, it is good to see him earning due plaudits for his superb performances in the early weeks of the season.

Phil Hay provides key Leeds transfer update

Leeds United will only make new signings in the January transfer window if their season is in dire straits, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Iffy start to the season

The Whites impressed hugely in the Premier League last season, finishing ninth in their first year back in the top-flight and playing some eye-catching football along the way.

The 2021/22 campaign has been a struggle to date, however, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side plagued by injuries in defence and picking up just one win, which came at home to Watford last weekend.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Hay gives transfer update

There could arguably be a need to make January reinforcements in order to freshen up the squad, but that appears to be unlikely.

According to The Athletic‘s Hay, it would be a surprise if any new faces came in midway through the season:

“But January? I’m not convinced the club will do much in January unless the league position is causing acute concern.

“From my perspective, if the season is in hand at the turn of the year, then I’d hold off and gear up for a major midfield addition when the season ends. I think we can all see that it has to be done.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-19/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Wait until the summer

While Leeds’ tough start will naturally lead to calls for new signings, there is no need to go overboard, with Bielsa having a strong squad at his disposal.

As Hay alludes to, unless the Whites are suddenly hit with a bigger form crisis or many more injuries, they would be better off waiting until next summer, rather than potentially rushing into a signing.

January is notorious for panic signings of overpriced players, and Victor Orta and co are surely working on a long-term strategy rather than throwing darts at a board – just look at their recent interest in teenage starlet Mateo Joseph.

Liverpool fans mock Gary Neville

A number of Liverpool supporters have been mocking Gary Neville after he claimed Manchester United have a superior squad to the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won their first two Premier League games this season, winning 3-0 at Norwich City and beating Burnley 2-0 at Anfield.

After a tough campaign last time around, Liverpool look back to their best and should challenge the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea for the title in 2021/22 – Saturday’s clash with the latter could tell us more.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

United could also be potential contenders, but Sunday’s 1-1 draw away to Southampton suggests they perhaps still have some catch-up to do.

Despite this, Neville believes his former club will finish above Liverpool in the table this season because their squad is better, admitting as much on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football [via Anfield Watch on Twitter].

Leeds’ Robin Koch let Bielsa down v Man Utd

In the end, Leeds United’s first game of the new Premier League season turned into a nightmare.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were thrashed 5-1 at Old Trafford by Manchester United, with the Whites blown away by a rampant attack led by a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick.

The Leeds manager had to make one significant pre-match call over Kalvin Phillips, leaving his talismanic midfielder on the bench given his lack of fitness. In his place, Robin Koch started in the anchor man role, and it was a position with which he never really got to grips whatsoever.

As per Sofascore, he was dribbled past twice over the course of the game (only Luke Ayling was beaten more) and managed just two tackles as United’s midfielders overran him and were too quick for him. In possession, Koch really struggled, completing just 78% of his passes, providing no key passes and actually having 17 fewer touches than goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

At half-time, former Leeds and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand tore into the German’s positioning on BT Sport’s live coverage, saying that his marking was “criminal” in allowing one of the most dangerous players in the Premier League in Fernandes to spin off him for the home side’s opening goal.

Writing on Twitter, The Athletic’s Phil Hay said: “Not the only difference but Koch and Leeds haven’t been able to contain Fernandes. Was apparent in the first half too. Tough last half-hour coming up. #lufc”

Given that Bielsa trusted him to play the Phillips role in the middle of the park, Koch’s performance was nothing short of a shambles.

He looked all at sea defensively and didn’t have the composure in possession which the England international usually brings to the table either.

It was just an embarrassing display all round from Koch, and one which again shows why Leeds desperately need to sign some genuine quality cover for Phillips in the engine room.

Meanwhile, Leeds must finally sign this long-term Bielsa target…

Guardiola should unleash Grealish vs Spurs

Manchester City begin their Premier League title defence with a trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, and Pep Guardiola should unleash Jack Grealish from the start.

The new £100m signing was limited to an appearance from the bench against Leicester City in the Community Shield last weekend, and whilst the Citizens would go on to lose that game, Grealish showed glimpses of what he will offer City with his dribbling and passing technique.

As City will be without Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden for their trip to North London, the England international could be the man to unlock Nuno Espirito Santo’s defence, as only the Belgian contributed more key passes per game than City’s new signing in the top-flight last season.

You could also argue that the former Aston Villa man will have a point to prove against Spurs, after seeing a move to the Lilywhites break down in 2018 due to Daniel Levy’s refusal to pay the Villans’ £40m asking price, which would have perhaps proved to have been a bargain, in hindsight, considering his superb form since then.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Whilst the Spanish manager has several options on the wing available to him, Raheem Sterling didn’t feature at all in pre-season due to England reaching the final of the European Championships this summer, with Foden absent through injury for at least another month.

The City academy graduate sung Grealish’s praises earlier this week and suggested that he was looking forward to being in the same side as him, saying:

“He’s fearless on the ball. He can just change a game on his own, so I believe that he’s a really special player and he’s going to be key for us.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

Spurs are arguably weakest at right-back, with both Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier struggling to perform last season, so the £58.5m-rated beast could cause them all sorts of problems down the left and be Guardiola’s game-changer, in a game that City should be targeting three points from if they are to win the title again this season.

United set the marker on Saturday, so City must spark a reaction here – the inclusion of Grealish could well be key to their hopes of achieving that.

And, in other news… Guardiola provides injury update, City fans will be fuming
