Yorkshire board restructure approved as members back Lord Patel proposals

Resolutions at emergency general meeting supported by more than 80% of members

David Hopps31-Mar-2022Yorkshire members have delivered a massive vote in support of Lord Kamlesh Patel’s proposals to restructure the club to address the fallout from Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of mistreatment, which brought accusations that the club was institutionally racist and also risked the potential loss of international fixtures at Headingley.More than 80% of members voted in favour of reform on all three resolutions, although disturbingly low voting figures underlines that Yorkshire have suffered both from a flood of member resignations or non-renewals – Covid may have been another influence – and that there is considerable disillusionment over the whole affair. That being so, “a plague on both your houses” appears at least an undercurrent among the Yorkshire membership – although Yorkshire have yet to find a present-day Romeo and Juliet to show them a new direction. That really would be a change in the age profile. After the result of the Emergency General Meeting, held in the Long Room at Headingley, was known, Lord Patel reacted: “We welcome the outcome of this EGM and thank the Members for their full and proper consideration, an open exchange of views, and their votes. It is an overwhelming vote for positive change.”This support will help Yorkshire County Cricket Club to be an inclusive and welcoming place and gives us the clarity and certainty we need to keep building this great club.”Yorkshire has now met the ECB’s conditions for the return of international cricket and, working with them, we’ll deliver some great events here at Headingley this summer. We’re looking forward to the start of the season, for all our teams and for cricket at all levels right across this County.”Three proposals were voted through. Lord Patel’s ratification as Yorkshire’s chairman was approved by 932 votes in favour to 155 against, with 22 abstentions. A second resolution, releasing Lord Patel and others from personal liability on decisions taken, after threats of legal action, passed by 897 to 182 (28 abstentions); and the restructuring of the board to include independent members went through by 927 to 159 (19 abstentions).Related

DCMS chair weighs in as Yorkshire crisis deepens

Latest indications are that with official membership figures standing at around 6,000, but full members – the only ones allowed to vote – down to 3,000, turnout was about 35%. Such figures must fill Yorkshire with trepidation, a once powerful county brought to its knees.Lord Patel, Yorkshire’s chair and de facto chief executive (a fact that defends his reported salary of around £200,000), had warned that failure to win the vote would make it virtually impossible for the club to pay players’ wages and complete the domestic cricket season, which begins next week.Key sponsors have also turned on the county following Rafiq’s testimony that “institutional racism” had left him close to taking his own life. The ECB wasted no time in expressing its support. A spokesperson said: “We are pleased that Yorkshire members have given their overwhelming support to these reforms. This is an important step forward in bringing about real change and setting the club on course for a more inclusive future.”We welcome the progress made by Lord Patel so far, as well as his commitment to making the club one which everyone, from all backgrounds, can be proud of. With these governance reforms now having been passed, we are satisfied that international cricket can now be staged at Headingley this summer. However, there is much work still to be done at Yorkshire and it is important that the plans set out so far are now delivered. We will continue to monitor progress closely.”Our regulatory investigation into the complaints brought by Azeem Rafiq, which is separate to this process, remains ongoing and we will update on this in due course.”Yorkshire’s immediate response might well be that of relief that the threat of removing international cricket from Headingley should now be lifted, and so avert the risk of bankruptcy. But their financial plight remains horrendous. Debts are around £20m and their opponents have predicted possible severance and unfair dismissal payments approaching £3m.Martyn Moxon stood down as director of cricket and Mark Arthur retired as CEO after accepting severance payments. As many as 14 employees, including the coach Andrew Gale, were then summarily sacked in a decision as shocking as any in Yorkshire’s turbulent history, for signing a letter which took an uncompromising stance against Rafiq’s allegations. That decision still divides the county. Nevertheless, the first major vote of the membership is an emphatic rejection of the rebellion from a rump of Yorkshire members, led by former chairman Robin Smith, a retired 79-year-old Leeds-based lawyer, who has threatened to resist change with a long-running campaign of legal action. That threat has not yet been withdrawn, and he might regard trying to prune the White Rose as a preferable occupation in old age to pruning his own roses, although it would take a considerable dollop of self-entitlement for Smith to pursue it when the members, as well as the ECB and politicians, have now spoken so loudly.Smith and his acolytes, some of them Yorkshire members for half a century or more, believe that Yorkshire’s independence is now under threat because of ECB interference and that Lord Patel has taken control in an undemocratic manner. Yorkshire counter that their restructuring actually follows Sport England guidelines. They particularly recoil at the fact that a new Board will be formed with eight independent members – not Yorkshire members – who will serve alongside two Board members drawn from the membership, the chief executive and director of cricket. Opponents have argued that Yorkshire is a co-operative society in law and so this us unlawful.Smith had also claimed in a leaked letter to Lord Patel that Yorkshire would now essentially become a subsidiary of the ECB, forever dancing to its tune, and that the shift of power to the centre would affect any other recalcitrant counties in turn.”A four to one ratio of outsiders to members as non-executives on the club’s board would so change the character of the club as to render it unrecognisable as a Yorkshire institution,” he wrote. That battle cry for independence would once have carried considerable weight across the Broad Acres, and it is some achievement for the county to have mismanaged its enquiry into Rafiq’s racism allegations so markedly that Yorkshire members have just shrugged off the risk and accepted that change is not just inevitable but desirable.

But county cricket is changing, albeit slowly, memberships are falling, and the introduction of independently-minded figures with many talents might finally break the cosy coterie that has run Yorkshire cricket for the past generation without much to show in their favour. The clear message from Yorkshire members is that, whatever the risk, they have had enough and that it is time to move on.Some may also recognise the irony that when Yorkshire ran into a financial crisis 20 years ago, Smith, then chairman, forced through his own power game – as he proudly told the when he retired as chairman in 2020.”The club was under real threat,” he said. “We had a big and unwieldy committee and very committed cricket people who didn’t necessarily know anything about how to run a business.”It was an opportunity to modernise the whole structure of the club and… I decided that the best way to do that was to get the committee to agree to delegate all its powers [via a change in the club constitution] to a small group of people who knew what they were doing.”If change has been embraced (however grudgingly in some households) within a largely aged membership then the likelihood is that the view across Yorkshire cricket as a whole – younger followers who are less likely to be members, but who still follow the county and who fill the cricket grounds every weekend – will be even more enthusiastic.Smith has also lambasted in writing the chair of parliament’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport select committee, Julian Knight, after the body heard emotional evidence from Rafiq about his treatment at Yorkshire, suggesting that their conclusion was pre-judged and that the committee was guilty of “unlawful interference” against the committee.Smith wrote: “My information is that the DCMS pressured the ECB to sanction YCCC in the wake of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations by threatening to determine that the ECB was not a fit and proper governing body for cricket.”

Vince's hundred adds a touch of quality

James Vince tuned up for the Royal London Cup final with a cultured century at Old Trafford but Hampshire’s position near the foot of the table was a more immediate problem

He may have been questioning his decision momentarily when opening partner Joe Weatherley edged the 19th ball of the morning behind for a duck to give Dane Vilas a routine catch off the bowling of four-wicket seamer Graham Onions. At 7 for 1, it was time for the visitors to knuckle down and rebuild after the early setback. Both Vince and new man Jimmy Adams did exactly that as the pair batted positively to put pressure on the Lancashire bowlers.Despite getting off to a flyer, Vince did give a chance, albeit a difficult one, on 20 – hitting the ball hard to Steven Parry who couldn’t cling on at extra-cover.Vince’s eyes lit up when Vilas introduced the spinner as he upped his strike rate before moving to his half-century off 66 balls, hitting six fours and a six in the process. The pair brought up the hundred partnership off 140 balls and Hampshire reached lunch on 113 for 1.The afternoon session began the same way as the morning – Hampshire losing an early wicket.Whatever Onions had for lunch had him fired up and ready to go. The 35-year-old sent the middle stump of Jimmy Adams (44) cartwheeling with the fourth ball after the interval.Sam Northeast supported his skipper nicely and the pair put on 50 in 61 balls before Vince swept Parry to the boundary for four to bring up his century off 131 balls which included 15 fours and a six.Vince was only able to add three more runs before Parry bowled a ball which pitched on middle and leg and turned to hit the top of off stump. This left Hampshire 187 for 3.Resuming on 207 for 3 after tea, Tom Alsop and Northeast looked to press on and put their side in a commanding position.Alsop gave a chance when he was on seven, hitting the ball quickly past Keaton Jennings – who got fingertips to it at fifth slip. This drop went on to cost the Red Rose county only eight runs as Alsop dragged on for 15 to give Onions his third of the day, leaving his side 216 for 4.Northeast departed four overs later as he was caught by Rob Jones at fifth slip off the bowling of Jordan Clark for 41.The visitors lost a late wicket as Onions claimed his fourth after he had Ian Holland caught behind for 24.Onions couldn’t find a fifth before stumps and finished the day with figures of 4 for 64. Glamorgan dream of an upset after Usman Khawaja hundred

A century on debut for the Australian meant Warwickshire have a stiff chase on the final day if they are to continue their winning run

Jon Culley at Edgbaston11-Jun-20181:52

Surrey set the pace in Division One

ScorecardUntil he turned up in Cardiff last week to be introduced as a Glamorgan player, Usman Khawaja’s knowledge of Wales did not extend much beyond the sitcom Gavin and Stacey. It has become one of his favourite TV shows, so much so that top of the list of places he wants to see while in the principality is not Cardiff Castle or the Snowdonia National Park but Barry Island. It is quite likely Wales will take to him, too, after he marked his Glamorgan debut with a century that has given them a chance of achieving their first Championship win at Edgbaston since 1988, when the sometime England fast bowler Greg Thomas took six wickets and Warwickshire, needing 194 to win on the final afternoon, were bowled out five runs short. In doing so Khawaja emulated his compatriot, Shaun Marsh, whose place in the side he has taken, who also made a hundred on his county debut in April. They will play together in the Vitality T20 Blast later in the summer. For now, Marsh is preparing for Australia’s ODI joust with England, which begins on Wednesday. It was Marsh’s call-up that led Glamorgan to ask Khawaja if he wouldn’t mind playing in two or three Championship matches ahead of the T20, an arrangement he is more than happy with, given there is an Ashes tour looming in 2019.Not that he is unfamiliar with English conditions. Indeed, he has made centuries here before, two for Derbyshire – Glamorgan’s opponents in Swansea next week – and one for Lancashire. But he does not have one in a Test match in England, which is another thing on his to-do list following his 171 against Joe Root’s hapless boys at Sydney in January. His 125 here, spanning almost three-and-a-half hours on a slow, used pitch now effectively four days old, ensured that the good work of openers Nick Selman and Jack Murphy against the new ball on the second evening was not wasted, even after Selman had clipped Keith Barker straight to short midwicket in only the fifth over of the morning. It might have been. Murphy added only eight to his overnight score and both Connor Brown and Owen Morgan went cheaply but Khawaja found an ally at last in Chris Cooke, his captain in this game in the absence of an injured Michael Hogan. They shared a partnership of 115 that ended with his own dismissal, lbw playing back to Jeetan Patel, whose offspin to that point he had countered pretty well. There has not been much turn so far and Josh Poysden, who did so well to take five wickets in the first innings, was wicketless this time. Yet it is a surface that needs to be treated with respect, nonetheless, one on which a batsman can become tentative. Not so Khawaja, who paced his innings evenly, scoring his first fifty off 58 balls with seven fours, his second off 63 with another seven.Once he had gone and Cooke followed, gloving a catch as he tried to withdraw the bat against the impressive 18-year-old quick Henry Brookes, the innings did fall away yet Warwickshire, needing precisely 100 more runs than were required 30 years ago, were left with a tall task to extend their winning run and those padded up in the dressing room will have been pleased to see Will Rhodes and Dom Sibley negotiate 13 overs to stumps unscathed.

Cost £0, now worth £16m: Everton struck gold with “outstanding” brute

Everton supporters have been through the ringer through the course of the previous two seasons and unless Sean Dyche leads them on a solid winning run, they could face yet another relegation battle.

The Toffees have finished 16th and 17th during the last two Premier League campaigns and there has been a variety of reasons behind the poor performances and lack of confidence at the club. Both Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard were far from ideal choices to lead the Merseyside outfit, while their records in the transfer market were underwhelming to say the least.

Players such as Neal Maupay, Salomon Rondon and Dele Alli didn’t exactly set the world on fire, and it is perhaps no surprise that Lampard and Benitez failed to make their mark in charge of the club.

In saying that, there have been a few hidden gems that have moved to Everton since the summer of 2021 which have proven to be solid signings and will play become key members of the squad in the coming years.

Nathan Patterson and Dwight McNeil are talented youngsters who could become integral members of the first team for the foreseeable future, yet it is a signing made by Lampard that could potentially turn into a lucrative piece of business by the Toffees…

How much did James Tarkowski cost Everton?

After escaping relegation by the skin of their teeth at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, Lampard entered the summer transfer window with grand designs on how to bolster his squad so that this wouldn’t occur again.

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

Amadou Onana looked like a promising arrival, joining from Lille, while James Garner signed from Manchester United and McNeil arrived from Burnley and these all looked like positive signings. James Tarkowski also made the move to Merseyside, and it was arguably their finest signing that summer, as he joined for nothing after he left Burnley following the expiration of his contract.

Director of football Kevin Thelwell praised the player when he joined, saying: “We are delighted to welcome a player of James’ quality to Everton and believe he will be an excellent addition to our squad. The statistics show that James has consistently been one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders in recent years. Added to his playing attributes, his excellent leadership skills and experience will be a huge benefit, too.

“James is a player I’ve admired for many years and Frank was very keen to bring him to the Club. We look forward to him being a highly-valued member of our squad next season and in the years to come.”

This was a player who had made 219 appearances for Burnley and had spent the last six seasons in the top flight, gaining plenty of experience in the process.

The move has since gone on the become a very shrewd signing by the Toffees, especially considering his market value has risen due to his performances over the previous 12 months and this could potentially generate Everton a vast profit should they be tempted to sell him.

What is James Tarkowski’s market value now?

When the centre-back moved to Everton in July 2022, his market value was only €8.4m (£7.2m), yet over the next 12 months, this value would rise sharply.

Indeed, it didn’t even take a month for Tarkowski to be valued at €29.8m (£26m) according to Football Transfers and while this has dropped slightly in the months since, the defender is now currently worth €19m (£16m), and this represents an impressive increase from when he made the move to Everton in 2022.

Why is James Tarkowski worth this much?

Although the Toffees conceded 57 goals last season and finished in 17th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone, there were a couple of bright sparks throughout the season and Tarkowski was one of them.

The 30-year-old played a total of 40 games across all competitions during his maiden season on Merseyside, and he certainly proved to the supporters why the club were keen on signing him in the first place.

James Tarkowski

Tarkowski ranked third across the Everton squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.2) during the 2022/23 season while also ranking third for accurate passes per game (34.6) and interceptions per game (1.3), clearly indicating that he settled in well at the club and was a positive figure as they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

Not only impressive among his teammates, Tarkowski also showcased his abilities when compared to his positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues. Indeed, the defender ranked in the top 1% for blocks per 90 (2.46), the top 8% for aerials won per 90 (3.16) and rather remarkably the top 1% for touches in the opposition penalty area per 90 (2.33), indicating that he is among the finest on the continent over a wide range of metrics.

The former Burnley defender has continued this rich vein of form into the current season, topping the pile for Sofascore rating (7.33) and interceptions per game (1.7), while also ranking third for clearances per game (3.0) and fourth for accurate passes per game (35.6), emerging into a player Dyche can count on as he looks to lead them into the top half of the table.

Dyche knows all about his qualities, having managed him when they were both at Burnley and the 52-year-old has even lauded the defender as “outstanding” in the past.

Everton haven’t had much joy to cheer about with regard to success in the transfer market over the previous few years and this has arguably led to them underperforming and battling relegation on a consistent basis.

Tarkowski has proven to one of their few shining lights over the last year or so and his performances possibly allowed the Toffees to retain their Premier League status and without him performing heroics at the heart of the defence, they may have found themselves in the second tier this term.

There is still a long way to go in the current campaign, but Everton have no doubt hit the jackpot on Tarkowski, and they will hope he can give them the boost they need to push into the top half under Dyche.

O'Brien's fairytale debut makes ICC rankings history

Australia’s Charles Bannerman, in the very first Test match in 1877, is the only batsman to score more rankings points in his country’s debut Test

That performance earned O’Brien 440 rankings points.ESPNcricinfo LtdTo find a performance that earned a batsman more rankings points in a team’s debut Test, we must go all the way back to 1877 and the first ever Test match, in which the opener Charles Bannerman made 165 retired hurt out of Australia’s first-innings total of 245 against England at the MCG. One hundred and forty one years later, that innings still holds the record for the highest share of a team’s total made by one batsman. Spurs: Mourinho flop was a "useless" £15m disaster for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur, for all their efforts to banish their silverware stagnation, have come unstuck on more than one occasion.

In fact, Daniel Levy even recently took ownership for some of the questionable decisions clearly motivated by a desire to get their trophy-dodging monkey off their back, speaking at the recent Fan Forum: "I had gone through a period where we'd almost won. With Mauricio we went through some very good times. We didn't quite get there but we came very close and we had a change in strategy. The strategy was 'let's bring in a trophy manager.

"We did it twice and look you have to learn from your mistakes. They're great managers but maybe not for this club."

Such admittance to failures of the past is admirable, but made far easier when Ange Postecoglou has already returned the feel-good factor to north London. It was always bound to be well-received, given the positivity that the Australian's tenure is bringing.

AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.

Therefore, the 62-year-old businessman cannot be allowed to be completely expunged for his past failures, which have doomed the fanbase to years of ridicule.

One such example is his appointment and subsequent treatment of Jose Mourinho, hiring the legendary Portuguese tactician with the record of having won a trophy with every club he had overseen. Then, despite the rocky nature in which they reached the EFL Cup final in 2021, the decision to sack the now-AS Roma man before playing it was ludicrous.

Admittedly, his was a tenure that hardly screamed of forging a dynasty in N17…

Who did Jose Mourinho sign for Spurs?

The signings of the 60-year-old were enough to suggest that the former Chelsea boss had little plans of sticking around for the long haul, as he sought to acquire proven talent to perform instantly.

Stars like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon were all proven in their own right, and yet the latter two struggled to impress in their first few years. Even the loan acquisition of Gareth Bale, bringing him back to north London seven years after his world record departure, screamed of that 'win-now' mentality that Levy mentioned.

However, arguably the biggest disappointment of all these names was the signing of Matt Doherty, who marked a shrewd initial capture from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Republic of Ireland international had shone at Molineux for many years, but able to capitalise on a dwindling contract, he was brought in for just £15m. Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny lauded the move initially, clearly unaware of the misfortune that was to come. He noted: "It's certainly an interesting move for Matt, who has been a tremendous servant for Wolves. He is one of the best full-backs around, he will be very much in the frame to play.

"His number of assists, plus he's goalscoring full-back, if your full-back is scoring and creating goals it's a real asset. I think it's great value and a great deal for Tottenham."

However, provide offensively he did not, with first-team opportunities limited despite having recorded eight goal contributions from right-back in the league for the Old Gold the year prior.

Just two Premier League assists all season merely scratched the surface of his mediocrity during that debut term, with the 31-year-old's lack of defensive awareness hardly blending well with Mourinho's steadfast and solid system. Journalist Gareth Davies would outline his surprise at just how bad the flop managed to be under such a defensive boss: "Almost impressive at this point that no matter the opposition, no matter the situation, Matt Doherty is absolutely useless."

Therefore, it was a surprise to see the defender very nearly survive through the tenures of another two permanent coaches before meeting his north London end.

Why did Matt Doherty leave Spurs?

The manner of Doherty's exit was extraordinary, and only emphasised the torrid lack of forethought shown by the club.

Having been lambasted in snide fashion by Antonio Conte earlier in the season, describing a system without the full-back as "the right way to start the game", it seemed set for him to spend the rest of the 2022/23 season on loan with Atletico Madrid.

Former Tottenham defender Matt Doherty.

With all the paperwork signed as the former Bury loanee headed to Spain, Spurs realised that with Djed Spence also leaving temporarily for Rennes they had used up their eight outgoing loan slots.

As such, they had to agree to mutually terminate his contract, and he was unveiled as a new Red and Whites player soon after on a free transfer.

How has Matt Doherty played since leaving Spurs?

It is fair to say that, since departing England, Doherty has hardly recaptured the form that saw the Lilywhites first seek to sign him.

After all, he would make just two La Liga appearances for the Madrid outfit, neither of which were starts, before moving once again.

Having spent ten years of his career with Wolves, it only made sense for him to return to the Midlands during their fiscal hour of need. With Julen Lopetegui frustrated regarding the lack of transparency of their finances, the 37-cap ace marked a shrewd free transfer for them to bolster a threadbare squad that was somewhat gutted over a tough summer window.

However, it's fair to say that his performances in the league have been nothing short of abysmal, with a 6.40 average Sofascore rating suggesting that it has been far from the romantic return he likely envisioned.

Even journalist Dean Jones highlighted his surprise with the lack of minutes Doherty is managing for a relegation-threatened side. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "You felt at that point, there must be a specific plan for him within this team. If he was going to return, he knew where he was fitting in, but he hasn’t had that many minutes. I think that that is quite a surprise, to be honest."

Whilst Mourinho's tenure already feels long-forgotten given the bulk of his acquisitions are far from the first-team, this is one that marked a particularly frustrating deal due to the manner of his exit.

Allowed to leave for free due to a lack of faith from the manager, the hope will be that under Postecoglou they can remove such foolish moves from their repertoire and seek to build towards a brighter, more incisive future with the former Celtic boss spearheading such a charge.

Friedkin now think they’ve sealed a deal for top off-field Everton target

The Friedkin Group now believe they have sealed a deal to bring in a top off-field target to Everton, according to a recent report.

Everton make it seven unbeaten in the league

It is now back-to-back draws for the Toffees, as they played out a 1-1 with Brentford this week, despite in-form forward Beto having a few one-on-one chances to get Everton ahead in the game. But they had to settle for a point at the end, which makes them seven unbeaten in the league and now 15 points clear of the bottom three.

Worse than Beto: Moyes must drop 6/10 Everton star who had 0 shots

The Everton forward endured a frustrating evening against Brentford on Wednesday.

After the game against Brentford, David Moyes was happy with the result, given he doesn’t have a good record against the London side. “I am happy with that because I have never had a good record here. Thomas Frank is a good manager. I thought we were at least worthy of a point today. Beto had three one-on-ones with the goalkeeper, and we did not score any of them.

“I was really disappointed with the players at half-time because we conceded from a set-piece that way. We try to prepare for it but did not deal with it very well.

Friedkin confiden Kinnear will join Everton

So while Everton continue to pick up points and climb the table on the pitch, The Friedkin Group are working on off-field appointments, and according to Graeme Bailey, Everton are now confident that a deal is done to bring Angus Kinnear to the club from Leeds.

Everton managerDavidMoyescelebrates after the match

The report states that while Kinnear remains well respected at Elland Road by the 49ers and chairman Paraag Marathe, there is real confidence from TFG that he will be at Goodison Park for the start of next season, as he is believed to be interested in a fresh start elsewhere.

The Friedkin Group are looking for a new CEO to help the club turn around their fortunes both on and off the pitch as they kickstart their new era at Bramley Moore Dock.

Kinnear has emerged as a target after helping Leeds become a Premier League team again and now one of the best sides in the Championship. Kinnear has overseen many roles at Leeds during his eight years at Elland Road, from working on transfers to overseeing their stadium expansion project. So, his departure will be a big miss for Leeds, especially when it is expected that they will be in the Premier League next season.

Kinnear is expected to come in at Everton and work closely with Moyes, who will hope his new CEO can provide the backing and support he will need as Everton move into their new stadium and look to climb the table and move closer to those European places.

Rohit, Krunal blitz keeps Mumbai Indians alive

The pair’s unbeaten 56-run stand off 21 balls secured a third win in nine matches, keeping Mumbai Indians alive in the season

The Report by Shashank Kishore04-May-20183:05

Dasgupta: Kings XI threw it with the bat

Mumbai Indians are on a cliff edge, but not yet weak enough to be pushed off just yet. Rohit Sharma and Krunal Pandya’s unbeaten 56-run stand off 21 deliveries helped them chase down 175 with an over to spare, after Kings XI Punjab had the upper hand for the most part of the game.Needing 50 off four overs, Ashwin threw the ball to Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who had picked up two wickets and caused Mumbai’s batsmen much trouble. Rohit responded by hitting him for two sixes. The floodgates truly opened when Marcus Stoinis missed his lengths in the next over as Krunal got stuck in to take 20. This brought the target within touching distance, with four leg byes off a missed heave sealing Mumbai’s third win in nine matches. The Gayle-Rahul party continues
Mumbai had a plan for Chris Gayle: to hit hard lengths, target his rib cage, and not give him anything full or wide in his hitting arc. Gayle had scored one off eight balls as a result. His fluency was missing and KL Rahul, who began with a sparkling inside-out six over extra cover off Mitchell McClenaghan, was denied strike. But by hitting Hardik Pandya for three fours in the fourth over, Gayle caught up to get Kings XI going again. His hoist of McClenaghan for a 92-metre six that cleared the roofs at deep square-leg marked his arrival.Kings XI had averaged 59 in the Powerplay coming into this game. They were slower today – 49 for 0 – but the openers eventually brought up their fifth fifty-plus partnership of the season. They were soon separated, though, when Rahul picked out JP Duminy at deep midwicket off Mayank Markande’s half-tracker in the seventh over.Yuvraj continues to struggle
Yuvraj’s Smart Strike Rate of 40.32 was the poorest among 51 batsmen who have faced at least 50 balls this season. He started slowly again after being promoted to No. 3, making just five off his first nine balls. Yuvraj then smacked Krunal for six over deep midwicket, but that was the only highlight of another rusty effort as he was run out after a second mix-up with Karun Nair. Yuvraj’s efforts: a run-a-ball 14, taking his season’s tally to 34 in six innings. The move to drop Manoj Tiwary after just one game looking even more baffling.Mumbai’s poor finish
Jasprit Bumrah was superb in the Powerplay, and superb in the death; his figures of 4-0-19-1 were his best so far this season. But Mumbai still did not get the finish they wanted. After restricting Kings XI to 135 for 5, they conceded 39 off the last three overs. Two nights ago in Bengaluru, their final over, bowled by McClenaghan, went for 24. Here, Marcus Stoinis scored 21 off the last over, from Hardik. Stoinis finished with 29 off 15 and Kings XI had momentum, even though they may have been 20 runs short.Kings XI use spin upfront
While Mumbai bowled only five overs of spin, Kings XI bowled those many in the first eight overs. R Ashwin, who kept Evin Lewis and Ishan Kishan quiet, bowled three. Then Mujeeb struck with his fourth delivery in the sixth over, when Lewis nicked a skidder to Rahul. Ashwin eventually bowled out by the 11th over, with Mumbai needing 99 off 54. Suryakumar Yadav scored a quick half-century even as a watchful Kishan, trying to overcome a slump of three ducks in five innings, played himself in. When it got to a point where they had to go, Suryakumar fell to an ugly hoick.Rohit’s batting position
Yuvraj batting at No. 3 and Axar Patel at No. 5 weren’t the only surprises of the night. Mumbai played Hardik at No. 4 ahead of Rohit, who had smashed 118 off 43 against Sri Lanka in his previous T20I in Indore. On Friday, Rohit came in at No. 5 after Kishan fell, with Mumbai needing 75 off 42.Hardik’s 13-ball 23 ensured Mumbai kept up with the asking rate, but his dismissal brought Krunal to the crease. And then Kings XI lost their lengths. Stoinis, playing in place of Aaron Finch, bowled three slower length balls and a full toss to concede three fours and a six in the 17th over, as Krunal used the depth of the crease on a true surface and found the leg-side boundary. He finished on 31 off 12 balls, Rohit on 24 off 15, and Mumbai had six points, same as the three teams below them in the league.

New target: Man United weighing up move for "exciting" ace Ten Hag loves

Manchester United are now weighing up a move for an "exciting" midfielder, and Erik ten Hag is personally driving the deal, according to a report.

Who are Man United signing in January?

If Man United want to bring in extra reinforcements during the January transfer window, there may have to be a couple of sales, with Football Insider reporting they could sanction the departure of midfielder Scott McTominay, amid interest from Bayern Munich.

The report makes it clear United will need to be "financially savvy" if there are to be any new arrivals this winter, following a summer of big spending, and McTominay does not feature prominently in Ten Hag's plans, despite starting against Brighton.

Selling the Scotland international could generate "big funds", which the Red Devils may choose to reinvest on a new central midfielder, having been linked with LDU Quito's Oscar Zambrano, who is attracting the interest of a number of Europe's top clubs.

Ten Hag may also have to think about replacing Jadon Sancho, with the winger now open to an exit in the January transfer window, meaning Bayern Munich's Serge Gnabry could be targeted, alongside Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams.

According to reports from Spain, Man United are also closely following the performances of Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, following his breakthrough campaign in the Belgian Pro League last season (via Man Utd News).

Ten Hag is said to be a big fan of the midfielder, which indicates the manager is driving the deal, but there will be competition for his signature, as Barcelona are also named as potential suitors.

Xavi will have the chance to assess the 18-year-old during Barca's Champions League clash against Royal Antwerp at Camp Nou this evening, after keeping tabs on his progress so far this season.

How good is Arthur Vermeeren?

Although he is only 18-years-old, the maestro has already established himself in the Royal Antwerp team, having started every game in all competitions this season, weighing in with a total of two assists in nine appearances.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded the Royal Antwerp starlet as "incredibly mature", while also branding him "one of the most exciting prospects in Belgium", so it is exciting news that Man United are in the race for his signature.

The central midfielder has also been hailed as a "breakout star" by Goal Features Editor Tom Maston, in light of the impact he made for Antwerp in the 2022-23 campaign, scoring a vital goal in the title race back in May.

With McTominay potentially set to be on the move in the January transfer window, it is vital that Ten Hag brings in a replacement, and the Belgian is showing signs he could be ready to slot right into the first team, despite his age.

That would make Vermeeren an ideal signing for Man United, rather than bringing in a player like Zambrano, who is yet to prove himself outside the Ecuadorian Serie A, and would need more time to adjust to the Premier League.
