Everton target Victor Lindelof proved his worth when he had Bolasie in his pocket

According to reports in the Sunday Mirror, Everton are eyeing a £35m move for Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof following a tough debut campaign at the Old Trafford.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Sunday Mirror says that new Toffees boss Marco Silva has identified the 23-year-old defender as a priority signing, as long as the Red Devils are willing to offload the Sweden international.

The Sunday Mirror says there is no suggestion that Jose Mourinho wants to sell Lindelof so soon after bringing him to Old Trafford, with insiders suggesting that he will be given a second season to make a real impact.

The report adds that United could be in line to make a profit on the centre-back having purchased him for £31.5m, which is something that could tempt Mourinho given he currently has six players that can play in that position at his disposal.

How did Lindelof do in 2017/18?

The Swede may well have been expected to have formed a first-choice partnership with Eric Bailly at the heart of the back four when he was signed last summer, but it didn’t turn out that way.

The 23-year-old struggled in the early months of the campaign and he was responsible for the two goals conceded in the 2-1 defeat against Huddersfield Town, although he had Toffees winger Yannick Bolasie in his pocket when he featured at right-back in his side’s 2-0 win at Goodison Park in January.

Lindelof made 29 appearances in all competitions, but he failed to make the matchday squad for the final day of the season last month.

Would he be a good signing for Everton?

He certainly would be, yes.

While things perhaps haven’t worked out for him at Man United so far, his form for Benfica previously and some of the glimpses of the quality he has in his locker for the Red Devils means he would be a great addition for the Toffees.

The 23-year-old would bring some European experience to the back four, and he could form a strong partnership with Michael Keane at the heart of the Merseyside outfit’s backline.

Convincing United to sell and Lindelof that he should give up on his Old Trafford career after just 12 months could be their biggest challenge.

West Ham fans hate bargain Fabianksi alternative

West Ham fans have been loving some of the recent transfer stories, but they’re not so fond of their latest goalkeeper target.

According to Spanish outlet AS, West Ham are eyeing up a summer swoop for Roberto Jimenez, who could be available for just €2million (£1.75m).

The veteran goalkeeper, who played at every youth level for Spain but never cracked the senior side, spent last season on loan with Malaga, and his parent club Espanyol are looking to cash in.

The Hammers will likely be linked with plenty of Malaga players after they hired the Spanish club’s director of football, Mario Husillos, this week.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255909″ player=”12034″ title=”Three reasons we love to hate… Germany”]

The 6 ft 3 Roberto is a solid goalkeeper, and his experience and knowhow would certainly be an astute addition for under £2m, but fans are hoping for bigger and better things, as he’s not exactly a marked improvement on last season’s horror show in goal.

Lukas Fabianski seems to be the top target for the number one shirt in East London, and fans are bashing the links to the 32 year-old Roberto, who kept just six clean sheets last season in a struggling Malaga side.

Arsenal fans would love to sign Hirving Lozano after World Cup performance

Arsenal fans are eager for the club to make a move for Hirving Lozano after watching him in action for Mexico against South Korea on Saturday night.

After his wonderful goal against Germany in their opening group match, Lozano was again central to a Mexico win against the Koreans, providing the assist for Javier Hernandez to score the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory.

The 22-year-old is also coming off the back of a superb season in Eredivisie for PSV, scoring 17 goals and assisting 8 more in league action.

It’s a fantastic return and his potential to become a big player at the elite level seems strong, making him a very attractive prospect for Arsenal and Unai Emery this summer.

Fans would certainly like to see him signed, believing he can offer the attacking spark the Gunners have been looking for over the last 12 months.

They took to Twitter to share their thoughts on signing him after his Saturday performance…

Liverpool would be making a mistake swooping for Wilshere

Liverpool should not be considering a move for ex-Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.

What’s the word?

The 26-year-old would have alerted many clubs when he announced earlier this month that he will be leaving the North London club.

The midfielder has been at Arsenal for his entire career, but injury problems hampered his progress.

Last season, Wilshere returned to the Gunners for the 2017-18 season after spending the previous campaign on loan at Bournemouth.

What do you think of the World Cup so far? Let us know and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

However, he was unable to hold down a regular starting spot, and after having talks with new manager Unai Emery, the 26-year-old decided to seek pastures new.

A handful of clubs have been linked to Wilshere, but he is yet to sign a deal with anyone.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255848″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Liverpool’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

Why should Liverpool avoid him?

There is no doubt that the midfielder has the skills to thrive in a decent team, but his injuries have taken its toll.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side have plenty of energy and work at a million miles a minute.

The Reds manager likes his players to press with intensity, but due to Wilshere’s problems he may not be able to cope with the demand.

Liverpool have shown progress under Klopp, but in order to continue the trajectory, they require proven stars that can deliver on a consistent basis.

That is not something that Wilshere can guarantee.

Jonny Hayes’ fresh injury worry couldn’t have come at a worse time for the player

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic have been left sweating on the fitness of winger Jonny Hayes, having just recently returned to the first team squad after breaking his leg in his debut season at the Hoops.

What’s the story?

Hayes suffered a season ending injury back in December against Dundee after a clash with Josh Meekings and made his first appearance in a friendly match just days ago.

Now though he’s potentially facing another spell on the sidelines after coming off in the Hoops’ latest friendly against Bohemians Prague this weekend.

The Scottish Sun now say he is facing a fight to be fit for the side’s UEFA Champions League qualifier against Alashkert later this month.

Brendan Rodgers confirmed it was a thigh strain, telling the paper:

Jonny’s thigh is a bit tight and we’ll just have to see how he is. It’s a shame for him as he started the game quite well combining with Scott Sinclair down the left.

Hopefully, we have just been a wee bit cautious but he felt his thigh when he had the shot that just went wide.

Unfortunately, it can happen when a player comes back after a long time out.

Jonny is very dynamic but hopefully it was just a twinge and it will be nothing too serious.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”259344″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch JeanClaude Billong quickfire questions”]

Will Hayes ever play a key role at Celtic?

Many were surprised to begin with when Jonny Hayes signed for the Hoops from Aberdeen last summer, despite undoubtedly being one of the division’s best players outside of the Hoops squad, shining for the Dons for a number of seasons.

He struggled to make an impact in the first half of the season and was obviously then ruled out of action in 2018.

With Patrick Roberts leaving the club this summer and Scott Sinclair losing form, the upcoming qualifiers could have been huge for him in trying to cement a place in Brendan Rodgers’ first team plans.

This latest setback could be costly when it comes to ever making it as an established Hoops star.

Could promotion really be on the cards for Reading this season?

It’s an exciting time to be a Reading fan. Third in the Championship, a host of exciting new signings showing their quality, under new owners who have given manager Steve Clarke their full backing in the transfer market – things could be a lot worse for the Berkshire club. Indeed, sometimes it’s hard to remember that only a year or so ago, they were a lot worse.

Wealthy Russian owner Anton Zingarevich had flirted with taking over the club, buying a minority of shares before promising to complete transactions and dealings to become the majority shareholder. He never did, and the ensuing financial repercussions meant the club had no option but to sell our best assets in the summer of 2014, with the money from these sales going more or less entirely to unpaid bills and the taxman.

Adam Le Fondre was sold, and some of the elder statesmen of the squad were released, to get them off the wage bill. This, and a combination of other factors, including a feeling of utter staleness around the whole club, meant the Royals finished last season in a terribly disappointing 19th place, a finish that reflected massive underachievement from their squad.

However, it might just have been possible to see the green shoots of recovery in some of what happened last year. The takeover of the club by a Thai consortium in summer 2014, whilst it did not yield immediate dividends in the shape of a massive transfer budget or more obvious finances available, things slowly but surely progressed throughout the season.

The various academy sides all did well, making sure Reading once again are in the top tier of development sides across the country and thus making sure they receive the most available funding for their academy. The FA Cup run gave the whole town a feeling of pride and belief in the team, and the promise of a potentially key summer in the transfer window meant things were definitely looking up when the season ended in May.

Added to this was the promotion for the under 21 side into the top tier of the development league, meaning the fans could feel confident about the young blood coming through the ranks, something which always gives a club a boost.

The start of the season brought the Royals performances but not results. Birmingham away saw them hit the bar three times, miss a last minute penalty a generally dominate the game and still lose, and then home games against Leeds and MK Dons saw the same game management but again not that cutting edge that is necessary to roll sides over. It was only really the game against Brentford that saw the incisive, short, sharp passing and resolute defending that is rapidly becoming a hallmark at the Madejski.

The side that finished in the playoffs last year were easily disposed of, and Ipswich were then mauled at the Mad Stad, 5-1 a fair reflection of an attacking performance full of confidence, skill and swagger. New signing Orlando Sa, a newly rejuventated Nick Blackman, and Watford loanee Matej Vydra all combined to produce an attacking display the like of which a home crowd starved of goals and entertainment had not seen in many a month.

Gritty away wins at Bristol City and Burnley, as well as an excellent performance at home to Premier League Everton in the League Cup have done nothing to lower expectations, which are now sky-high.

The combination of increased muscle in the transfer window, new owners who seem happy to invest in the team, the stadium and club, a manager who seems to be able to get the best out of mercurial talents like Nick Blackman and Hal Robson-Kanu, and fans who suddenly feel good about the team again means it’s suddenly a good time to be a Reading fan.

Five wingers Liverpool should target in January

Relatively fresh appointment Jurgen Klopp has already sought to downplay notions of him looking to overhaul Liverpool’s squad in the January transfer window.

But if the Anfield gaffer does target a new recruit to bolster the Reds’ ranks for the second half of the season, the chances are that it’ll be a winger.

As Liverpool legend turned Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher claimed last month, Klopp’s current squad is imbalanced in a few departments – most particularly out wide.

With Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino all predominantly No.10s, the only genuine wide-man in the Liverpool squad is inexperienced youngster Jordan Ibe.

So with the transfer window now less than two months away from officially reopening in January, Football Fancast have listed FIVE wingers Liverpool should target in the new year.

Which of these FIVE wingers would you prefer to see turn up on Merseyside in January, Liverpool fans? Let us know by commenting below!

RIYAD MAHREZ

There are few wingers enjoying better form throughout European football right now, let alone the Premier League, than Leicester City’s prodigious Riyad Mahrez.

His potent counter-attacking partnership with England star Jamie Vardy has been one of the stories of the season so far, the Algeria international bagging seven strikes and five set-ups to help fire the Foxes to third in the Premier League table.

He’s second in both the goals and assist charts, whilst the 5 foot 10 attacker’s 3.5 successful dribbles per match is a division highest.

Mahrez’s blend of firepower, creativity and superlative close control suggests he could ply his trade at a much higher level and aged just 24, the potential is certainly there for further improvement.

Arsenal, Manchester United and even European champions Barcelona have been linked with the former Le Harve man this season, however, and such widespread interest will only increase Leicester City’s valuation.

LEROY SANE

Liverpool reportedly launched a €15million bid for Leroy Sane during the summer, so they’ll undoubtedly be taking an interest in the Schalke winger’s recent form ahead of the January window.

The 19 year-old has exploded to life with eight goals for club and country since the start of the season, including four strikes in the Bundesliga, a vital equaliser against Sparta Prague in the Europa League and three goals in three appearances for Germany’s U21 string.

Sensationally quick, boasting the fourth-best dribbling return in the German top flight (three per match) and a somewhat stocky 6 foot frame, the Essen-born attacker seems like a good fit for Premier League football – which is probably why Tottenham have also been circling in recent weeks.

He certainly fits the profile of signing Liverpool’s transfer committee usually approve of, as a talented youngster on the cusp of elite European football, but Schalke showed their resolve in the summer and remain reluctant to sell after tying Mane down to a four-year contract in July.

EZEQUIEL LAVEZZI

Linking Ezequiel Lavezzi with a move to Anfield has almost become a running joke amongst the tabloids. But if the Argentina international is ever going to make the much-speculated switch to Merseyside, logic suggests it will be within the next to transfer windows .

Indeed, the veteran winger’s PSG contract is winding down, meaning he’ll either leave Parc de Princes for a pittance in January or on a free transfer at the end of the season. And although you can already imagine a few disapproving frowns from certain members of Liverpool’s transfer committee, the 30 year-old still has a lot to offer Liverpool.

He boasts enormous experience as a former World Cup finalist and Champions League regular, whilst his renowned tenacity and pace are particularly befitting of Jurgen Klopp’s ‘gegenpressing’ philosophy.

Add a knack for the occasional sublime – his superb volley against Chelsea last season being amongst the more memorable examples – and Liverpool’s attack could find a new source of goals from the left-hand side.

Admittedly, however, few players choose the Premier League as their final stand in European football. Something tells me a return to Serie A or South America is the likeliest scenario for the former Napoli star.

GONCALO GUEDES

A suggestion laden with monumental risk but equal reward; Benfica’s Goncalo Guedes has been compared to three-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo but his contract includes a seismic £40million release clause.

No doubt, however, the 18 year-old is an incredibly exciting prospect. Earning comparisons with the Real Madrid star after just 23 senior appearances is an achievement within itself, but Guedes also became the youngest Portuguese goalscorer in Champions League history earlier this season with a winning strike against Atletico Madrid.

The winger was voted the Breakthrough Player of the Year in the Portuguese second tier last term after amassing eight goals and 14 assists for Benfica’s B string, and he’s already upped his game to first team standard.

That suggests great promise even if the Ronaldo comparisons seem rather hyperbolic. But Benfica are unlikely to settle for much less than Guedes’ aforementioned £40million release clause.

MARCO REUS

A pipedream or a plausible scenario, Liverpool fans will argue anything is possible with Jurgen Klopp at the Anfield helm.

Marco Reus was one of Klopp’s biggest success stories as Dortmund boss, quickly developing the winger towards the realms of world-class after acquiring him from Borussia Monchengladbach in summer 2012.

No question, the German international has been amongst the most potent attackers in Europe during the intermittent period, bagging 44 goals and 28 assists in his last 91 appearances for the Black-Yellows.

Blessed with incredible speed, technique and intelligence, Reus has proved himself equally adept in the roles of scorer and provider during his four campaigns at Westfalenstadion, generating output as a winger, a No.10 and as an out-and-out striker.

His familiarity with Klopp and the ‘gegenpressing’ philosophy is yet another benefit of Liverpool launching a swoop for the 26 year-old in January. But the 27-cap international could easily command a fee in excess of £40million and if the Reds show an interest, Europe’s top clubs are almost certain to follow suit.

Klopp hails ‘special’ Liverpool attacker

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed Roberto Firmino, stating that the Brazilian forward has the attributes to be a real success at Anfield.

The versatile attacker moved to Merseyside from Hoffenheim in a considerable deal over the summer, but initially struggled to make an impact for his new employers.

However, Firmino put in an impressive showing in the Reds’ recent 4-1 victory over Manchester City, with his partnership with compatriot Philippe Coutinho a standout factor in the victory.

Klopp has stated that he has always admired Firmino from their mutual time in Germany and feels the forward can have a telling influence on the Merseyside outfit’s fortunes.

“Roberto came from a club in Germany in Hoffenheim and it is a small one – very good players – and he was playing under not the biggest pressure,” The Telegraph report the German as saying.

“Then he made a transfer to a big club like Liverpool with all the things together – with the pressure, the public, the media.

“I did not know him as a person before I came here but I knew him and liked him as a player and he is still not 100 per cent to where he can go – not even close yet.

“He is a big physical talent, really strong, it is not easy to get the ball from him. He is fast in a special way and very, very good in shooting, something we have not seen here until now. So still there is a lot to come and it is a good situation for the club.”

Just what position Firmino is best suited in remains to be seen at Anfield, with the South American able to play as a centre forward or an attacking midfielder.

The Brazilian will look to get amongst the goals later today as the Reds are back in Premier League action against Swansea.

Arsenal’s achilles heel may not de-rail them this time

Arsenal have dragged themselves to the top of the table on goal difference over a Christmas period where they beat Manchester City and Bournemouth, yet stuffed between those two wins was a very unconvincing performance in a heavy defeat to Southampton.

It’s results like that that make people doubt Arsenal’s ability to win the title – yet there they are, atop the final league table of the year.

Inconsistency hasn’t really been Arsenal’s problem for the last decade or so without getting their hands on the famous trophy with the golden crown. After all, Arsenal have consistently fallen apart around the time of the Champions League last-16 stage.

Though it is their ability to go the whole season without finding themselves in a slump so severe that it costs them a title challenge and, setting aside the previous two seasons, any kind of meaningful silverware at all, that has been Arsenal’s undoing.

This season, it might not be a full-on slump that sees Arsenal throw away what is perhaps their best chance of winning the Premier League crown in years. Arsenal managed only two points in November, and that defeat against Southampton brings back the doubts we had then – even if they are now top dogs.

But it should be remembered that November and early December was certainly about winning the games to get themselves into the Champions League knockout stages rather than concentrating on the league as such. They managed to get the results they needed, though we thought their luck had dried up given their draw against Barcelona in the next round.

Yet they find themselves top of the league after Leicester’s two games without a win, as well as some poor results from Manchester City and Manchester United. Surely that means the luck hasn’t run out.

But in fact, it’s the inconsistency of every team around the top of the league that has given Arsenal their great chance of winning the title. They are simply the most consistent of the bunch this season, even if they still show their ability to be thumped away to Southampton – remember, that was their first win since November 7th.

It wasn’t just the defeat, though, it was the manner of the defeat. Arsenal looked second best all game, and even if there were some refereeing errors that led to Southampton’s goals, in truth Arsenal can’t really complain about being beaten given how poor they were.

In seasons gone by a performance like that would almost have ruled Arsenal out of the title reckoning, even at this stage. The pundits would be turning their noses up, with everyone saying that title-winning teams don’t get thumped like that. But this season is different. Manchester City have been thumped by large scorelines. Manchester United have failed to score in seven Premier League games so far this season. Chelsea are simply awful. Liverpool blow hot and cold, too. Every team you would usually class as a title contender is slipping up now and again.

The most consistent of the bunch is Leicester – but Arsenal find themselves above even the sensational Foxes now.

This season could be Arsenal’s year not because they are brilliant, not because they are one of the best sides the Premier League has ever seen, but simply because no other team deserves those adjectives either.

But there’s still half a season to go. Half a season for a team to show some consistency and put together a run of wins. If someone can do that, they’ll probably win the league.

If one team goes on a run, Arsenal – on this form – are too consistent to win the league. As usual. But this time they only have to be consistent over half a season – and they can usually manage that.

West Ham’s dream end of January XI

The Hammers are dreaming of European football next season after their decent start to the 2015/16 season.

Dimitri Payet is undoubtedly one of the signings of last summer and it looks as though the club can build around his creative brilliance as they look to push on in the second half of the campaign.

Slaven Bilic will probably be hoping to add to his options during this window and the ex-Besiktas boss will hopefully be able to invest as successfully as he did in the summer.

With the move to the Olympic Stadium approaching, the Hammers can offer a bright future to any potential signings and their owners are more than willing to invest as the club looks to go to the next level.

Bilic’s side already boasts plenty of quality, but this window could see the squad add depth and class that will allow them to become regular challengers for a place in the top 6.

Here is the ideal XI for Bilic..

Adrian

The West Ham keeper is one of the most under rated players in the league at the moment.

Since winning his place as first choice, the stopper has provided some wonderful performances and won his side points on several occasions.

Mathieu Debuchy

Football – Arsenal v Besiktas – UEFA Champions League Qualifying Play-Off Second Leg – Emirates Stadium, London, England – 14/15 – 27/8/14Mathieu Debuchy – ArsenalMandatory Credit: Action Images / John SibleyEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

It is possible for West Ham to find right-backs from other clubs, but Debuchy would be a good addition for the Hammers.

Although it hasn’t gone to plan for the Frenchman at Arsenal, he is still a quality option for a mid-table side and would provide an attacking impetus that Jenkinson rarely has done.

James Tomkins

Football – West Ham United v Sampdoria – Pre Season Friendly – Upton Park – 14/15 – 9/8/14James Tomkins – West Ham UnitedMandatory Credit: Action Images / Tony O’BrienEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

Tomkins, despite the signing of Ogbonna, just about keeps his position in the starting XI.

He is a real fan favourite and has formed a solid partnership with Winston Reid over the past season or two.

Winston Reid

It is probably a surprise to some that Reid has remained at West Ham, considering his excellent performances over the past few seasons.

The shortage of centre-backs makes players like Reid a really valuable commodity and the Hammers have done well to retain their man.

Aaron Cresswell

Football – Everton v West Ham United – FA Cup Third Round – Goodison Park – 6/1/15West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell Mandatory Credit: Action Images / Carl RecineLivepicEDITORIAL USE ONLY. Cresswell hasn’t quite caught the plaudits like he did last season, but the youngster will still be harbouring ambitions of getting on the plane to Euro 2016 this summer.

Bigger clubs might come calling for West Ham’s left-back, but he would be sensible to stay put.

Cheikhou Kouyate

Kouyate has been used in a number of roles throughout this season and his physique makes him a highly versatile player for Bilic.

His long limbed running style is comparable to a young Abou Diaby, or Vieria, and he is a player that is vital for adding momentum to the midfield.

Fredy Guarin

Football – Tottenham Hotspur v Inter Milan – UEFA Europa League Third Round First Leg – White Hart Lane, London, England – 7/3/13Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin (L) and Tottenham’s William Gallas in actionMandatory Credit: Action Images / John SibleyLivepic

Inter have had quite a good time of it this season, but Guarin would surely be interested in a move to the Premier League and the two Davids would be able to offer a tempting amount of money if they really wanted their man.

Mark Noble has been a reliable servant for the Hammers, but extra midfield options are evidently needed if the club are to push to the next level.

Manuel Lanzini

One of Bilic’s best signings since arriving at the club, Lanzini has a bright future ahead of him at West Ham and the way he links up with Payet is crucial.

Victor Moses may have hoped for more minutes when joining on loan, but Lanzini has made the position his own.

Dimitri Payet

For my money, Payet has been the signing of the season in the Premier League.

The ex-Marseille man has recently returned from injury and West Ham immediately have a spark back to their game. Payet’s fitness will be the defining factor in the Hammers’ second half of the campaign.

Alexandre Pato

As Pato has rejuvenated himself in Brazil, it looks as though a lot of clubs will be chasing for his signature.

The ex-Milan forward has largely been a winger in his second spell in Brazil and he would fit nicely as a wide man in this West Ham side.

Pato, if needed, would also be able to fill in as central striker if Sakho was unavailable.

Diafra Sakho

West Ham fans can hope that Andy Carroll is finally on his way out the door, because Diafra Sakho has continued to show that he is a class above the Geordie centre-forward.

Sakho has his own troubles with injury, so an extra striker might be worth signing as backup.
