Clement unleashes 3 new signings in predicted Rangers lineup vs Hearts

Glasgow Rangers play their first Premiership game in 77 days on Saturday afternoon as they make the trip to Edinburgh.

Hearts are the opponents in the season opener and Philippe Clement will be hoping that the Ibrox side can make a perfect start to the 2024/25 campaign by taking all three points back to Glasgow.

The Belgian coach has just signed a new contract, keeping him at the Light Blues until 2028, cementing the fact he is all in on this project of rebuilding the club.

The next few weeks could be absolutely crucial. Not only does the league season begin, but the club face Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League qualification round, knowing that the riches of Europe’s premier club competition await if they manage to get through two rounds.

With nine summer signings, Clement has a few new players to choose from when it comes to picking his starting XI against the Jambos on Saturday – with Dujon Sterling seemingly the only confirmed absentee.

Rangers PXI

With that in mind, here's a look at who will get the nod to try and secure three points at Tynecastle…

1 GK – Jack Butland

Jack Butland

The Englishman enjoyed a wonderful debut campaign at Ibrox, missing just one game throughout the entire 2023/24 season.

Overall, he kept 25 clean sheets in 58 appearances, filling the void left by the retiring Allan McGregor with ease.

The question is, can he build on this excellent debut year and get even better this season? He will certainly start against the Jambos.

2 RB – James Tavernier

James Tavernier for Rangers.

Much has been made about Tavernier’s future at Ibrox during the transfer window, as there has been significant interest in the right-back.

Speaking in a recent interview, however, Tavernier claimed that he is “fully committed” to the cause this season as he attempts to lead the Gers to another league title.

During the 2023/24 campaign, the Englishman finished as the club’s top scorer, netting a remarkable 24 goals across 58 matches in all competitions.

Can he replicate these sorts of numbers this season? A solid start against Hearts could give him plenty of confidence.

3 CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

Following an injury-hit debut season at Ibrox, Souttar finally emerged as a key first-team player last term, making a total of 41 appearances for the club.

Clement clearly has plenty of faith in Souttar, as he and Connor Goldson were his main centre-back pairing throughout 2023/24.

With Goldson gone, however, Souttar will have to get to grips with a new partner, one who is a recent signing from FC Twente…

4 CB – Robin Propper

Following Goldson’s departure, it was clear the manager had to bring in at least one centre-back before the start of the season.

He didn’t take long to make his move, as Propper was announced on Thursday, joining the Gers from the Eredivisie.

The 30-year-old made 40 appearances for Twente last season, scoring three times in the process, and comes to Ibrox with high hopes.

His involvement this weekend is not guaranteed due to issues over paperwork, although if he does feature, a clean sheet against the Tynecastle side would be a wonderful start, that’s for sure.

5 LB – Ridvan Yilmaz

Like Souttar, Yilmaz endured a difficult debut season at Rangers. Having completed a solid pre-season last summer, he went on to make 33 appearances for the club, showing more consistency before an injury derailed his progress towards the end of the season.

Borna Barisic left the Gers at the end of last season, which means Yilmaz is the number one option at left-back heading into the new season.

Can he build on last season and continue to improve? Or will the pressure prove to be too much?

6 DM – Connor Barron

Connor Barron Aberdeen

The youngster will make his first competitive appearance for the club following his arrival from Aberdeen on a free transfer.

He has plenty of potential and has acquitted himself well during pre-season and will surely be given a start against Hearts.

7 CM – Mohamed Diomande

Mohammed Diomande

The Ivorian joined the club in January on an initial loan deal, before signing permanently this summer from FC Nordsjaelland.

The youngster scored twice during the second half of last season and has played well alongside Barron in pre-season.

If he can live up to his potential, Diomande could make the club a substantial profit, no doubt about that.

8 CM – Tom Lawrence

Tom Lawrence

The Welshman scored twice against Union Berlin in the final friendly match of pre-season, showing Clement just how important he could be for the club this season.

Battling back from an injury-hit first 12 months in Glasgow, Lawrence played more regularly last season as Clement utilised his talents fairly often.

He registered six goal contributions in 32 games for the Light Blues throughout 2023/24. Improving on this could see him help the club to a league title this term.

9 RW – Vaclav Cerny

The Czech winger joins on a season-long loan deal from Wolfsburg as Clement finally added some quality to his wide options.

Last term, Cerny scored five goals in the Bundesliga, which wasn’t bad considering he started just 12 games in the German top flight.

He should go straight into the starting XI against Hearts – fitness permitting – giving Clement a dangerous threat from the right as he looks to cut through their defence.

10 LW – Oscar Cortes

Oscar Cortes for Colombia.

The winger performed well during his first few games upon joining in January, but a season-ending injury in February derailed all his progress.

A positive pre-season will see him start the campaign on the left wing, and he could terrorise the Hearts' defence if he gets into his stride during the match.

Taylor upgrade: Rodgers lining up Celtic deal for "spectacular" £3m star

Celtic have less than a month to go before the summer transfer window slams shut and they must move quickly to complete the rest of the business that they want to do.

Brendan Rodgers has added three new players to his group so far and two of those – Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo – have come in to compete for the number one position, after Joe Hart's retirement at the end of last season.

The only outfield addition has been central midfielder Paulo Bernardo. He joined on a permanent transfer from Benfica earlier this month, after spending the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Parkhead from the Portuguese side.

Another former Hoops loanee now looks set to put pen to paper on a long-term contract with the club, as Adam Idah is closing in on a return to Glasgow.

Sky Sports claim that the Scottish Premiership champions have agreed a deal worth up to £9.5m with Norwich City for the centre-forward, which includes a guaranteed £8.5m fee, a further £1m in add-ons, and a 15% sell-on clause for the Canaries.

The club's current record transfer fee stands at the £9m paid to Paris Saint-Germain for Odsonne Edouard in 2018, which means that Idah could end up being a club-record signing if all of those add-ons are activated.

Celtic now eyeing left-back target

With a deal for Idah seemingly on the verge of completion, Celtic have now set their sights on a swoop for a left-back to bolster their defensive options.

According to DaveOCKOP, Rodgers is keen to complete a permanent deal to sign Owen Beck from Liverpool before the end of the summer window.

The report claims that the Hoops are one of three teams in the race to land the Welsh full-back in the last few weeks before the deadline passes at the end of this month.

Liverpool defender Owen Beck.

It states that English Championship sides Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United are also interested in signing the 22-year-old starlet, which means that Celtic face plenty of competition for his signature.

DaveOCKOP adds that a fee of around £3m would be enough to tempt the Premier League giants into cashing in on him, but the Bhoys are not near that figure as of yet.

It also reveals that Liverpool's preference would be for him to put pen to paper on a new contract at Anfield before going back out on loan, with Leeds and QPR both willing to snap him up on a temporary basis to improve their respective squads.

Who Owen Beck would be competing with at Celtic

If Rodgers does win the race to land the young talent from his former club then he would be competing with Greg Taylor for a starting berth at left-back.

The Scotland international is currently the only senior left-sided full-back in the Celtic squad as it stands, with Alexandro Bernabei out on loan, and this means that he does not have any competition for his position.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor.

Taylor has had a solid start to the current campaign, with one assist and two clean sheets in two starts in the Premiership, and was a reliable performer for the Scottish giants in the division last term.

The 26-year-old ace provided a creative threat down the left flank whilst also being relatively solid defensively for Celtic, as they won the league title.

As you can see in the table above, Taylor almost created two chances per game for Rodgers' side and won the majority of his duels on the deck, although he struggled slightly when dealing with aerial challenges.

The Scottish dynamo did struggle, however, in Europe as his performances across six starts in the Champions League left a lot to be desired.

He did not create a single 'big chance' for his teammates and made just 0.7 key passes per game. In fact, Taylor was dribbled past as many times per game (0.7) as he created chances, whilst he also gave away one penalty.

This suggests that the defender failed to make the step up to Europe's premier competition, which may be why Rodgers wants another left-back to compete with him.

Why Celtic should sign Owen Beck

Celtic should now work hard to secure a £3m permanent deal for Beck from Liverpool before the end of the window because he could come in as an upgrade on Taylor.

The Welsh whiz, who was hailed as "spectacular" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, spent the majority of the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Dundee in the Premiership.

Owen Beck coming on for Liverpool.

This means that the Reds youngster is already a proven performer in Scotland and would not need time to adapt to the country and division, as he has already showcased his quality at that level.

Beck caught the eye in Liverpool's academy, with a return of two goals and 11 assists in 54 U21 matches at left-back, and carried that form over to senior level with Dundee last term.

As you can see in the table above, the £3m-rated star created more chances per game on average and stood out defensively with a higher duel success rate and far more tackles and interceptions combined per match in comparison to Taylor.

This suggests that Beck outperformed the Celtic left-back in and out of possession throughout the Premiership season, with more creativity, more quality in transition with his dribbling skills, and more solidity defensively.

This was backed up by Beck's inclusion in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year ahead of Taylor, which shows that their peers deemed the Dundee sensation to be the best player in his position in the league.

Rodgers must ruthlessly replace Celtic man who left Kyogo "frustrated"

The Hoops have been linked with new signings in his position during the summer window.

1 ByDan Emery Aug 11, 2024

Therefore, Celtic could improve their team by swooping to sign Beck, who also has plenty of years left to develop and improve at the age of 22, and that could also help their chances in the Champions League if he can offer more than the Scottish defender did.

Rare sighting for forgotten format as England-Netherlands make history in Amstelveen

Fifty-over cricket has lost its lustre but a strong crowd expected for maiden bilateral series

Andrew Miller16-Jun-2022

Big pictureFifty-over cricket… remind me what that is again? Ah yes, that’s right, it’s all about Jonny Bairstow getting into Beast Mode and belting six after six after six into the short square boundary, to hunt down a run-a-ball target without breaking sweat. Or is that what Test cricket has become in the last few days? I can’t keep up anymore.Perhaps a quick glance at Statsguru will help refresh the memory of what 50-over cricket really is. It is, after all, England’s most favourite format of the game ever – look, they even have the trophy to prove it. But, no, computer error … it says here they haven’t played a single ODI for 11 months and counting, and when they did, it was with some random third-string outfit featuring five debutants and an admittedly familiar stand-in captain. And so, with apologies to what promises to be a historic occasion in Amstelveen on Friday, the resumption this week of England’s World Cup Super League campaign comes accompanied by an all-pervading sense of decay to white-ball cricket’s “traditional” form of the game (50-plus years of ODIs does qualify it for that title, right?). The Super League itself is already on borrowed time (not that the Netherlands’ challenge in this cycle has yet caught fire), and the format’s dwindling relevance is perhaps best epitomised by the prospect of Lancashire’s left-armer Luke Wood readying himself for a 50-over international debut without having bowled in a 50-over match for three years. And yet, here we are. Back on the rather battered bandwagon, sandwiched between two Test matches, with a new coach Matthew Mott overseeing the earliest stirrings of England’s World Cup defence, alongside an old captain, Eoin Morgan, who isn’t so much raging against the dying of the light as declaring “not really…” and changing the subject whenever the awkward issue of his shelf-life comes up for debate. There’s a changing of the guard afoot at some stage in the next 12 months. But whether it comes before or after England’s title defence in India remains a matter that only the skipper himself seems capable of confirming. And yet, all this circumstantial angst no doubt does the contest in store a disservice. For 18 months, England were guilty of endless forward planning in their Test team until Brendon McCullum’s arrival signalled a new intent to seize the day with the alacrity of the reborn, and perhaps the same is true for this week’s events. After all, England and the Netherlands have never before met in an ODI outside of a World Cup – and by the end of this trip, they will have doubled their official encounters over the years from three to six (although those with long memories will doubtless remember some of the unofficial encounters too, including this memorable set-back in an already dismal English summer in 1989).As Ryan ten Doeschate, Netherlands’ greatest player, told ESPNcricinfo, he too was guilty of too much forward-planning in his own fine career, and failed to fully savour the journey because of too much time fretting over the destination. You can be sure, if any of this week’s three matches ends going the way of either this or this encounter, a home crowd at Amstelveen will be all too happy to replicate the joyous scenes that England’s own victors felt at Trent Bridge earlier this week.In all honesty, the likelihood of that happening is slim. Not only does the 50-over format rather stretch the possibilities when it comes to outgunned teams sustaining a lasting challenge, the events of the week just gone have doubtless sent a jolt of electricity through the wider England set-up.Scott Edwards, Netherlands’ wicketkeeper, in action at Amstelveen•Peter Della Penna

Moeen Ali has already signalled his willingness to come out of Test retirement after seeing what fun his brethren had up at Trent Bridge, while Jos Buttler – who went from white as a Test sheet to pretty in Rajasthan pink in less time than the Barmy Army usually takes to get sunburnt – is another man who might just find the recall to arms irresistible. There’s no time like the present to plant that front foot and start remaking an impression. The Super League set-up does at least mean that the Netherlands come into this contest with matches under their belts: already this year, they’ve played away series against Afghanistan and New Zealand, while earlier this month, they ran West Indies close in two of their three fixtures at the same venue – most particularly in the third game, where at 239 for 3 chasing 309, the chase was truly on. A 20-run loss ensued, but with half-centuries for Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd, and forceful contributions all through the top order, there’s reason to believe they can still put up a fight this week, if not end a run of nine defeats in a row.Form guideNetherlands: LLLLL
England: WWWWWIn the spotlightThe performances of two 19-year-olds in Vikramjit Singh, the swashbuckling left-handed opener, and Aryan Dutt, whose offspin accounted for Nicholas Pooran in each of his three innings in Amstelveen, highlighted the talent coming through the Dutch system. But Bas de Leede, the allrounder who is the latest member of his family to represent the Netherlands, is the team’s perennial coming man: he has been around for so long that it is easy to forget he is only 22. He has only shown glimpses at full international level but a T20 innings of 79 not out off 30 balls against a Northants XI last month suggests he should enjoy the flat pitches anticipated in this series.Morgan is an obvious talking point, as he seeks in the same breath to prove both his fitness and his form. But Jason Roy comes into this series with a different set of question marks hanging over his game. In February, he pulled out of his IPL contract with Gujarat Titans citing personal reasons, and in March, he was fined £2500 by the Cricket Discipline Commission for an undisclosed misdemeanour that may or may not have been connected to the “indefinite break” that he took from the game in the early weeks of the season. He’s been back in action of late for Surrey in the Vitality Blast, and at Lord’s last week he hit his full stride for the first time this season with a rampant innings of 81 from 45 balls. He’ll doubtless be eager to continue letting his bat do the talking.Team newsTom Cooper is quite the blast from the past in the Netherlands set-up. He is set to play his first ODI since 2013, and his first international of any variety since the 2016 T20 World Cup, having featured for Brisbane Heat (without any great success) during the recent Big Bash. Shane Snater is available too, with Essex having released him from Vitality Blast duty, but Fred Klaassen will likely have to wait until the third ODI, given Kent’s brace of fixtures against Hampshire and Middlesex this week.Netherlands (possible): 1 Vikramjit Singh, 2 Max O’Dowd, 3 Tom Cooper, 4 Bas de Leede, 5 Scott Edwards (wk), 6 Teja Nidamanuru, 7 Pieter Seelaar (capt), 8 Logan van Beek, 9 Shane Snater, 10 Aryan Dutt, 11 Vivian Kingma.Sam Curran is likely to play primarily as a batter as he continues his return from a stress fracture of the back. His bowling returns have been impressive in the Blast for Surrey this season, but Morgan hinted that his levels would be built up through the series. Phil Salt is expected to get the chance to partner Roy at the top of the order, with Dawid Malan expected to bat at No. 3 as a possible under-study to Joe Root. Brydon Carse, who made his debut in England’s emergency squad against Pakistan last year, may get first dibs alongside Reece Topley in the bowling attack, as the only right-arm quick in a left-arm-dominant squad.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Phil Salt, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Jos Buttler (wk), 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Moeen Ali, 9 Brydon Carse, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Reece TopleyPitch and conditionsAmstelveen promises short straight boundaries and slightly longer hits square, which may particularly lend itself to Roy’s brand of straight-lined bludgeoning. Morgan described the pitch and outfield as “rock-hard”, which suggests runs, and plenty of them. The weather is set to be scorching.Stats and trivia Snater and Roy are cousins. Their only previous meeting in a professional fixture came in the 2018 Royal London Cup, between Essex and Surrey at Chelmsford. Roy (86 from 64 vs 5-0-36-0) enjoyed the better of that one. Morgan, Adil Rashid and Pieter Seelaar are the three survivors from Netherlands’ famous victory at Lord’s in 2009, Rob Key (who batted No. 6 for England in that match) is also present as England’s managing director. A strong contingent of England fans are expected to make the trip to the VRA, with good ticket sales reported despite a cheapest price of 60 euros. This series had originally been scheduled for May 2021, but was postponed due to the KNCB’s concerns about hosting a series with no crowds due to Covid.Quotes”It might be a scar for England but for us, it’s just joyful memories. We’re playing a different format here and England at that time were in a different mindset in white-ball cricket to where they are now. A third win would be fantastic.”
“We sat back in our hotel watching it on a phone, ball-by-ball, watching guys that we’ve played with over the years produce shots and apply a method that we’ve used in the most difficult of circumstances. Test match cricket is incredibly tough so to peel back those challenges and play in the manner that they did is a huge credit to the dressing rooms for creating an environment where people feel comfortable enough to do that.”

Wolves make offer to sign £2,000-a-week teenager, they’ve had a response

Wolverhampton Wanderers have tabled a bid for an impressive teenager as they look to bolster their ranks this summer, it has been reported.

New Premier League season brings questions for Wolves

Gary O'Neil's side kick off the 2024/25 Premier League season with a trip to last season's runners up Arsenal, a game which kicks off a challenging start to the campaign. The Old Gold face Newcastle United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Manchester City in their opening eight games, alongside tricky away trips to Nottingham Forest and Brighton in a brutal opening to the season.

Transfer business in the Black Country has been slow too. They have sold club captain Max Kilman to West Ham in a deal worth £40m, but are yet to bring in a replacement for the Englishman, who played every minute of their 2023/24 campaign.

They have made just two permanent signings (plus the confirmation of Tommy Doyle's loan move becoming permanent), adding 18 year old Pedro Lima and 20-year-old Rodrigo Gomes to their ranks alongside a loan move for Norweigian forward Jorgen Strand-Larsen.

It means that they head into the final few weeks of the transfer window needing to do business to add depth to their ranks, and they look set to continue down the youthful route as they explore a move for a centre-back.

Wolves target £2k per week teenager

That comes as reports in France claim that Wolves have identified FC Nantes defender Bastien Meupiyou as a potential new addition at Molineux this summer.

As it stands, O'Neil can only call upon Toti Gomes, Craig Dawson, Santiago Beuno and the returning Yerson Mosquera in the heart of his backline, and the Old Gold feel light in that area.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, they have moved to fix that by tabling an offer for Meupiyou, who has impressed at youth level for Nantes and the French national team.

The left-footed centre-back is down to the final 12 months of his £2,000 a week deal in France, and Nantes boss Antoine Kombouaré has made it clear he must be sold this summer if he doesn't pen fresh terms with the Ligue 1 side.

Wolves had one bid turned down but have returned with a fresh 4m euro (£3.3m) bid for the teenager's services recently. However, L'Equipe relay that Nantes turned this down too, and are set to demand 10m euros (£8.5m) for the youngster to leave the club this summer despite his contract situation.

Despite being highly rated, Meupiyou has made just a single Ligue 1 appearance, seeing red nine minutes into his debut against Marseille before a torn meniscus saw him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Given the circumstances, it seems unlikely that Wolves will stump up anything close to the asking price this summer, especially when he is set to be available for nothing in 12 months' time.

Australia want to keep evolving and avoid being 'caught out' in World Cup bid

Coach Matthew Mott says they won’t rotate players for the sake of it on the tour of New Zealand

Andrew McGlashan10-Mar-2021Australia are determined not to be “caught out” at next year’s 50-over Women’s World Cup with memories of falling short in 2017 still often referred to by members of the current squad who took part.Four years ago, Australia were bundled out by Harmanpreet Kaur spectacular 171 at Derby. That became a watershed moment for the side who realised they had started to stagnate and it has been a key motivator behind their record since which has included two T20 World Cup titles and a record-equaling run of 22 ODI wins. They will use the upcoming tour of New Zealand, which includes three T20Is and three ODIs, as a chance to gather intel ahead of the tournament and also to keep challenging themselves to lift their own performance levels.”What we are trying achieve in T20 is also what we are trying achieve in one-day cricket which is try to take the game on, push the boundaries a little bit and see how far we can take it,” head coach Matthew Mott told ESPNcricinfo.Related

Australia start to look beyond greatest generation with trans-Tasman tour

Darlington: 'Every day I'm pinching myself that this is happening'

Sutherland ruled out of New Zealand tour, Strano called up

“We learnt our lessons from the last World Cup, not evolving and probably thinking we could keep rolling along doing the same thing. We don’t want to be caught out this time, this is a perfect opportunity against good opposition – I know they’ve struggled against England but the Kiwis always give us a good run, in their home conditions we won’t be taking them lightly.”We are going over with a reasonably open mind, there’s a good mix of players, experience and some youth, so for us it’s about having a real dress rehearsal seeing what it will be like at that World Cup. We’ll play on a few of the same venues and getting some intel against New Zealand on those grounds will be great for us.”Australia are taking a 17-player squad across the Tasman – offspinner Molly Strano a late replacement for injured allrounder Annabel Sutherland – which includes the uncapped pace bowlers Darcie Brown and Hannah Darlington, but there won’t be caps handed out for sake of giving everyone a game.Australia beat New Zealand 3-0 at the start of the season•AFP via Getty Images

“Think our batting will stay the same, we’ve had a good run in our ODI cricket and style of cricket we’ve been playing we’ve been happy with,” Mott said. “In our one-day bowling attack there’s a lot of options. What we want to maintain is a bit of unpredictably so teams don’t know what to expect, so certainly different bowling combinations will happen. They’ll be subtle changes in there but our games are pretty similar and our best players are our best in both formats.”Players don’t generally want to give up their spot, either, so you have to manage that…but if there’s a close call to be made and there’s a player who has an opportunity and a senior player could do with a game off to refresh then those are the sorts of conversations we’ll have with the selectors.”Even just being the squad for a couple of people who haven’t been there is an enormous opportunity to understand our culture, how the team operates so there’s plenty of benefits even if they don’t get a game.”Mott has also been encouraged by the volume of runs being scored in the WNCL, highlighted by Elyse Villani’s prolific form which has brought 538 runs 134.50 including three hundreds. Of the squad heading to New Zealand, Rachael Haynes, Beth Mooney and Nicola Carey have scored centuries, Meg Lanning has a best of 96, Alyssa Healy 92 and Mott believes Ellyse Perry’s batting is heading back to its peak.”What’s been really exciting recently has been the number of players getting big hundreds,” he said. “That’s a trend that we like to see as a selection group – someone gets a hundred and the next day one of their team-mates is trying to get one as well. I’ve been inspired by players putting their hands up with those big hundreds.”The strength of Australia’s top order makes it a tough route back for Villani, who last played in March 2019, with the team generally only including three specialist batters in Haynes, Mooney and Lanning alongside wicketkeeper Healy and a plethora of allrounders.Elyse Villani has had an outstanding WNCL season•Getty Images

“It’s probably one of the best things you can see as a coach,” Mott said of Villani’s form. “I’ve been in regular contact with Elyse over the last couple of months to say keeping going, keep doing what you are doing, and she’s definitely playing with a lot of freedom at the moment. She looks self-assured, relaxed and if she can keep doing that then there’s obviously a future for her in Australian colours again.”She was in the team for a long time and by her own admission probably didn’t smash it out the park so all these runs and the way she’s doing about it is really exciting and shows how much depth we’ve got when we can leave a player of her class and caliber out.””It’s a bloody hard team to break into at the moment and all those other players in front of her have been scoring big runs as well. For Elyse she is competing in that team as a specialist batter. She’s doing all the right things it’s just unfortunate when you have good players in front of you.”The squad will depart for New Zealand on Saturday and then undergo two weeks managed isolation in Christchurch during which they will be able to train.

The opening day of the new LV= Insurance County Championship season saw Bristol over 20 degrees cooler than Chennai, where Rory Burns last walked out in a competitive match, and Surrey felt a chill all day as they made 220 for 9 against Gloucestershire.Josh Shaw, with 4 for 48, and Ryan Higgins, 3 for 35, ensured the home side did not squander winning the toss on a green-tinged pitch. They were denied the chance to finish Surrey off inside the day by late rain. They may even feel a touch disappointed, having conceded 32 boundaries. Higgins, beginning the season averaging just 21 with the ball, was the chief exception, leaking only 35 runs from his 19 overs.”We’re really happy with that,” Shaw said. “We wanted to bowl on that wicket and we’re pleased with how we’ve gone. We probably weren’t at our best but when you’ve got Surrey 220 for 9 not quite firing it’s only a good thing.”Ryan Higgins mentioned changing the angle of the seam for a delivery and I tried it and managed to get a wicket so that was a nice one.”The challenge for Burns was the diametric opposite of that which he faced in India, as the players walked out in conditions that might have felt more like January. But he nonetheless failed, with an angle through the slips for four before he edged to second slip driving at one from David Payne that swung away. Ollie Pope also drove loosely, to backward-point, for 22 in Surrey’s struggle. With England’s batsmen having not contributed, 38-year-old former South Africa stalwart Hashim Amla, now an overseas player with Kolpak registrations ended, guided his side to 91 for 3 at lunch with a series of punchy cover drives and punishment of George Scott’s wide deliveries. He reached an 85-ball fifty, but soon after the break was driving flat-footedly at Shaw and palpably lbw for 56.Ben Foakes, lbw for 26, beaten by one from Higgins that nipped back, and Jordan Clarke, sharply held by wicketkeeper James Bracey standing up to Higgins for 8, quickly fell to leave Surrey in a hole at 144 for 6.From which point regret might linger for Gloucestershire as Jamie Overton made a streaky 40 – edging Payne just wide of second slip and Scott also narrowly past at catcher at takeable height. He went on to flick Shaw to fine leg to raise a batting point but eventually fell dragging Payne into his off stump trying to force off the back foot.Jamie Smith, one of Surrey’s brightest young things, also lost his off stump, for 20, to one that nipped back from Shaw and the same delivery accounted for Gus Atkinson in just his third first-class match.”It wasn’t easy. Being ultra-critical we could have got a few more but I think we’re still right in the game,” Overton said. “You got yourself in and felt a little settled but one just did something out of the blue.”But you can still score on this pitch and we let ourselves down with not taking a couple of partnerships on a little longer.”
