Fabrizio Romano: Update on £21m Nottingham Forest bid for Santiago Giménez

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest in Nottingham Forest's pursuit of another signing this summer as they look to hand Nuno Espírito Santo a squad capable of pulling well clear of the Premier League relegation battle this season.

Nottingham Forest keen to make signings

With a month left in the transfer window, it was suggested that Nottingham Forest would be looking to make five new signings before the window slams shut, with the reliable John Percy explaining that the Premier League side were on the hunt for "two wingers, a forward, a left-back and another goalkeeper" before the August 30th deadline.

Since then, they have added those two wingers, with Jota Silva arriving from Portuguese outfit Vitória S.C, while more recently they completed a move to sign Paraguayan forward Ramon Sosa on a five-year deal.

Perfect for Sosa: Nottingham Forest could land their own Foden in £35m ace

The Reds have already had a proposal rejected for the talent this summer.

ByEthan Lamb Aug 17, 2024

“Ramón has been coveted by many clubs but was so clear in his desire to join Nottingham Forest", Forest's Chief Football Officer Ross Wilson explained. “We could all feel his energy, emotion, pride and excitement to be here from the first minute he arrived".

Now, attention is turning elsewhere, with the club understood to be keen on signing Aston Villa left-back Alex Moreno on a season-long loan deal to provide cover at full back. They have also been linked with a move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, so the final thing on the agenda is a new centre forward.

Romano issues update on striker hunt

Now, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Garibaldi have seen a bid turned down for Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez as they look to bolster their frontline.

As it stands, they have both Chris Wood (who scored in Saturday's draw) and Taiwo Awoniyi to call upon, but they are looking for further firepower and have identified the Mexican as a potential solution. Gimenez was thought to be on the radar of Tottenham last season as he enjoyed an excellent campaign, and he has started the new season in similar vein with two goals and an assist in two outings.

As per Romano, sharing news from Mexican media outlets, Forest are still in negotiations over a move for the talented forward, having seen an initial 25m euro (£21m) offer rejected. It is added that the offer is "not enough for Feyenoord to accept" and that they are holding out for a higher fee, but the Reds haven't given up and are pushing ahead to agree on a new number.

Santiago Gimenez for Feyenoord.

They will be in no rush for Feyenoord to sell the Mexican, with Gimenez still having three years left to run on his £29,000 a week deal with the Eredivisie champions. But with Wood now the wrong side of his peak and Awoniyi unreliable fitness wise, his addition would be a massive boost for Forest if they can get it over the line.

Rory Burns grinds once more as selection-grabbing innings eludes him

England opener still sweating on place as tough conditions hinder progress

Rory Burns made 55 to give Surrey a platform at Taunton•Getty Images

Surrey 191 for 4 Burns 55) vs SomersetOn the sort of surface which might convince an opening batsman – or a spinner – they should give it all up and become a plumber, Rory Burns made his fifth half-century in seven innings and fourth in succession. Nobody in the land has reached 50 more often this season. But these are uncertain times for Burns. He lost his England place in India and is far from certain to win it back in the New Zealand series. With Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley seemingly assured of their places in the top three, Burns’ involvement may depend on where England decide to play James Bracey, who they appear to see as a utility player capable of fulfilling a role in the top and middle-order. In that light, Dan Lawrence’s eye-catching century for Essex might not be great news for Burns. But, at his best, Burns’ batting has a phlegmatic quality that rises above such concerns. His maiden Test century, made against Australia in Birmingham, was in many ways a masterclass of mental strength overcoming every challenge. He was dropped often and beaten frequently but not for a moment did he lose his composure. It was similar here. With damp conditions denying any chance of play before 2pm on the second day, this pitch had been under cover for a long time before Somerset’s bowlers took first use of it. Inevitably, the ball nipped around and edges were beaten. But apart from one occasion, when Burns followed one he could have left, he refused to be drawn into pushing at the ball and was able to put any play-and-miss behind him. Eventually, as the ball softened and the bowlers tired, more poor balls were his reward. He failed to fully capitalise on his start but in terms of the basics of opening the batting, he looked in fine order.Related

Joe Root's clock stops on 99 – just as predicted

He would have been relieved to hear that Somerset had rested Craig Overton. Overton bowled 40 overs in the second innings of Somerset’s win over Hampshire last week and has already clocked over 200 this season already; heaven knows he has earned his break. But, with three five-wicket hauls in his last three Championship matches, his absence leaves quite a hole in this attack. Jason Kerr, the Somerset head coach, later confirmed the decision had been taken in collaboration with the England management. If Overton does win an England chance in the coming weeks, Somerset want him in the best possible shape to seize it.Perhaps more of a surprise was the absence of Jack Leach. He, too, was rested, though having bowled only 129.5 overs this season, this was more with a view to the challenges ahead; Leach has spent a long time in bubbles and there is more of the same to come. Perhaps the lush green surface persuaded Somerset that he would be surplus to requirements anyway. There wasn’t an over of spin in the day.Somerset were also without Steve Davies, who was absent to undergo a minor medical procedure. That left Tom Banton as designated keeper for the first time in first-class cricket. As it was, having beaten the bat regularly but without fortune in the first hour, Somerset’s control slipped. Burns, having weathered the storm, was able to accumulate neatly off his legs and drove a couple sweetly through the off-side when the bowlers over-pitched. Kerr later conceded that he found the performance “a bit frustrating”.”We haven’t quite capitalised on a surface which had been under cover for two days,” he said. “We didn’t ask the batsmen questions often enough.”Indeed, Somerset might consider themselves a bit fortunate with a couple of the wickets. Hashim Amla, who was starting to look ominously sound, pulled a long-hop to the long-leg fence – it provided Lewis Gregory with his 300th first-class wicket – and, after a couple of typically elegant cover drives, Ollie Pope top-edged an attempted pull shot from a ball that was too full for the stroke.Burns was, perhaps, a little unlucky. In attempting to defend a good-length delivery, he saw the ball bounce off the face of the bat and roll back onto the stumps. His consistency is impressive, certainly, but he will know that it is centuries, not half-centuries, that force selectors to take notice.”In those conditions, we have a decent score,” Surrey head coach, Vikram Solanki, said. “We needed a bit of luck early on, with playing and missing, but that is always going to be the case on that sort of pitch. I thought both Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman played well to overcome the new ball.”With the forecast grim, there is every chance that none of this will count for much. But if progress in the weeks ahead is decided by a point here or there, perhaps Somerset will reflect on this match and rue a squandered bowling point which they probably should have been able to claim.

Alongside Soler: West Ham working to sign “10/10" Ward-Prowse upgrade

West Ham United are at the start of an exciting new era, and Julen Lopetegui has certainly been backed by the board as he seeks to get the Irons flying.

Over £120m has been spent, and with James Ward-Prowse heading for the exit door, joining Nottingham Forest in a loan move, West Ham are looking to strengthen the middle of the park.

West Ham transfer news

According to The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg, West Ham are hoping to complete the signing of Chelsea talent Carney Chukwuemeka before the deadline.

This eleventh-hour deal is separate from the ongoing talks to sign Carlos Soler from Paris Saint-Germain and would not negatively impact that move. Chukwuemeka would join on loan, with the door open for a permanent solution down the line.

The Telegraph's Mike McGrath has followed up that report by suggesting that the Hammers are actively working to get the deal done for Chukwuemeka, albeit with rivals clubs also interested in the youngster.

What Carney Chukwuemeka would bring to West Ham

Chukwuemeka signed for Chelsea from Aston Villa for a fee in the region of £20m in 2022, but injuries and a consequent fall down the pecking order have limited him to just 27 appearances – starting only two top-flight fixtures last year.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

Regardless, the £100k-per-week midfielder has so much potential and could find the London Stadium provides him with the platform to go from strength to strength and really announce him to the Premier League.

He's even been hailed as an "absolute 10/10 talent" by scout Jacek Kulig, invariably performing with silky dribbling and an eagerness to get on the ball and make things happen.

He's a dynamic player but Chukwuemeka would likely find himself operating in the centre of the park, thrusting forward and opening circles of space in the opponent's half, in turn allowing Mohammed Kudus to zap forward down the flank, or perhaps creating an opening for Jarrod Bowen to latch onto and strike true, ball to net.

He's demonstrated something of an aptitude for an assist, and this could see the 20-year-old grow into his skin as a superb Ward-Prowse upgrade, with the Forest-bound free-kick specialist falling to the fringe since Lopetegui's arrival, lacking mobility and success when not in a dead-ball situation.

Wolves midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

Ward-Prowse ranks among the top 8% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 15% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref. Nice going, right?

Sure, but such high-ranking metrics derive from his set-piece deliveries. In regard to his production in open play, he ranks among the bottom 43% for progressive passes, the bottom 15% for progressive carries and the bottom 9% for tackles per 90.

Chukwuemeka is a vibrant talent, bursting onto the scene, and he would be a significant upgrade on West Ham's one-trick pony. He must be signed.

Marcus Harris continued his impressive form with a third LV=Insurance County Championship century as Leicestershire closed on a dominant 357 for 5 on day one of their match against Group Two leaders Gloucestershire. The left-handed opener, who hopes a strong season in England will be enough to retain his place in the Australian Test team when the Ashes series begins in December, followed his 183 in last week’s win over Middlesex with 148.Colin Ackermann, who posted his first hundred of the season against Middlesex and shared a match-winning 243-run partnership with Harris, made 57, the pair adding 160 for the third wicket, before Lewis Hill, who made 56, helped add a further 75 before Harris was out.Related

All three Harris centuries have come at Leicestershire’s Uptonsteel County Ground and in the space of his last four innings there. His 10 innings all told for the county have yielded 557 runs at 61.88, following his 695 at 63.18 for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. The 28-year-old hit 21 fours, timing the ball beautifully through the off side in particular, although the one that took him to his 18th first-class hundred was a flick off the legs off Josh Shaw.He fell on 148 midway through the evening session when New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips, Gloucestershire’s overseas replacement for Kraigg Brathwaite, claimed a second debut wicket with his off spin, Harris playing back to be leg before to one that straightened up.The third-wicket stand had been broken two balls after tea when Miles Hammond, the other off-spinner in the Gloucestershire line-up, had Ackermann reaching a long way for a flighted delivery which then spun back sharply to bowl the Leicestershire captain.Shortly before tea, Hammond thought he had dismissed Harris on 109 via a catch at short leg before umpire Nick Cook explained that the ball had hit the ground first.Hill went past fifty for the fifth time this season but was bowled shortly before the close by Dan Worrall, who almost had a second when Hammond got his fingertips to a difficult chance at second slip offered by Harry Swindells on 17.Earlier, after Ackermann had won the toss, Hassan Azad was caught at fourth slip in left-armer David Payne’s second over with the new ball, his seventh dismissal in single figures in nine innings.Sam Evans helped Harris with the early groundwork against the new ball before flicking Phillips straight to short leg as Leicestershire lunched on 89 for 2.

Man Utd line up double signing in the same position including 17 y/o talent

Manchester United are already planning ahead for the 2025 transfer window, and have identified a key position to strengthen with two new faces next summer, according to reports.

Ten Hag under fire

It has been an all-too familiar three games under Erik ten Hag to kick off Manchester United's Premier League campaign. Scraping a 1-0 win against Fulham, they were then beaten late on by Brighton at the AMEX stadium before being thrashed by Liverpool.

Three points after three games with no discernible style of play taking shape at Old Trafford has understandably set alarm bells ringing in the north-west once more, just two months after the club's hierarchy handed Ten Hag a contract extension in the wake of his FA Cup success, which rescued a season in which they finished eighth with a negative goal difference.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United's clash with Southampton, Ten Hag continued to fight bullishly: "We're in the transition period, we have to integrate a lot of young players in the team.

"We have to bring the injuries back in the team. Before anyone thinks about excuses, we have to win every game, I know that, the team knows this. We will focus on every game and have the mindset we have to win," the United boss told the media.

Man Utd ace was worth just £250k when Ten Hag joined, now he's worth £46m

The incredible talent has the world at his feet.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Sep 13, 2024

"Of course, when we see the scores nobody is happy. But the players have a very good sense of the process. We are in a good position. But we have to improve and we have to step up."

The Red Devils boss will be boosted by the availability of deadline day addition Manuel Ugarte, who arrived from Paris Saint Germain to bolster Manchester United's midfield ranks. But if reports are to be believed, United are already making preparations for next season behind the scenes.

Man Utd eye up two midfielders

That comes as GiveMeSport claim that the Red Devils are eyeing up two midfield additions next summer as they look to remedy what remains a problem area. Casemiro's age and form, combined with the lack of gametime for Christian Eriksen, means that Ten Hag has been forced into using Kobbie Mainoo virtually every game since he broke into the first team.

The arrival of Ugarte will help add more options in midfield at Old Trafford, but with both Eriksen and Casemiro likely to have left by next season, fresh blood will be needed. Now, the report details that "they want to strengthen their options [in midfield] with up to two signings in 2025", one who is "is ready to challenge" and another "emerging star".

In the latter category, they are keeping a close eye on Sverre Halseth Nypan, who currently plays for Norweigian side Rosenborg BK. The 17-year-old has previously admitted that joining Manchester United would be a "dream" and now his form is ensuring that a move could well become a reality.

Not 18-years-old until the end of the year, Nypan has featured 19 times in 2024 for Rosenborg in the Norweigian top flight, scoring five goals and grabbing 6 assists in that time.

With Manchester United's new-found desire to gamble on youth with the likes of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, he could be a very savvy addition if he is able to sustain his form across the next 12 months, though United are unlikely to be the only interested party.
