Australia vice-captain Rachael Haynes has announced her retirement from international and state cricket. She will finish her professional career entirely after this season’s WBBL with Sydney Thunder.Haynes, a left-hand top-order batter, made her Australia debut in an ODI against England at Lord’s in 2009 and a few days later scored 98 on her Test debut at Worcester. In total she scored 3818 international runs with 2585 of them coming in ODIs, which also brought her two centuries.Related

Haynes’ career can be divided into two parts: up to 2013 and then after her return in 2017. Having been dropped following the 2013 Ashes in England, Haynes was recalled for a tour of New Zealand nearly four years later and from that point averaged 45.07 in ODIs and 33.00 in T20Is with a strike-rate of 126.15. Her final international match was Australia’s gold-medal victory against India at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.Haynes captained Australia on 14 occasions when filling in for Meg Lanning, most notably during the 2017-18 Ashes when Lanning was ruled out with a shoulder injury.”One of the great things about having a long career is watching those around you develop,” Haynes said. “I’m extremely proud of the way this team has brought players in and nurtured their development. The ability to help players transition smoothly has been instrumental to our team’s success. To be a leader within this environment has been the greatest privilege of my career.”Haynes fell agonisingly short of the century mark three times during her Test career•Getty Images

Haynes filled a variety of batting positions, finishing as an opener in Tests and ODIs – ending her one-day career at the 2022 World Cup where she was the second-highest run-scorer behind Alyssa Healy – and became Australia’s middle-order safety net in T20Is, a role never better exemplified than against Sri Lanka, in Perth, during the 2020 T20 World Cup after Australia’s tournament had been left on a knife-edge following the opening defeat against India.A Test-match century agonisingly eluded her: apart from her 98 on debut, she also made 87 at Taunton in 2019 (ended by a dubious lbw decision) and 86 in Canberra against England earlier this year. She had addressed the retirement question over the past year and during the World Cup in New Zealand said: “At the end of every series I play I ask myself the question, ‘do I still have that passion and desire to continue on’ and ‘am I still playing at a level which is contributing to the team’s success?”On Thursday, she thanked all those who had played a part in her career.”Playing at this level isn’t possible without the support of many people,” she said. “From clubs, states, coaches, family and friends, I’m so grateful to those who helped me along the way. In particular, I want to thank my parents Ian and Jenni, and partner Leah for their unwavering support.”To all the team-mates across my career, you are the reason I’ve played as long as I have. You’ve inspired me to be better every day. I’ve learnt something from all of you, on and off the field. You’ve challenged me as a player, helped me grow as a person and most importantly, made cricket fun.”Haynes captained Australia on 14 occasions when filling in for Meg Lanning•ICC via Getty Images

Healy, who put on 160 with Haynes in the ODI World Cup final earlier this year, paid tribute to her team-mate.”I feel so fortunate to have been able to spend most of my career playing with Rach,” she said. “In the early years I played against her when she was at Victoria, and we have been rivals in the WBBL, but it’s pretty obvious that it’s better being on her team than trying to get her out.”To have the privilege of being at the other end watching some of her greatest innings, and it [is] those times, as well as the times off the field travelling around Australia and the world, that I will always cherish.”Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia chief executive, said: “On behalf of everyone at Cricket Australia I’d like to congratulate Rachael on an amazing career and also recognise the outstanding contribution she has made off the field.”Rachael’s calm and assured leadership has played a key role in Australia becoming one of the most successful sporting teams in history. She will go down as a great of the game.”Rachael has been an inspirational figure for kids coming into the game and to her many teammates and has played an integral part in the advancement of cricket as a sport for women and girls, both here in Australia and around the world. We look forward to watching Rachael in the WBBL this season and hope she maintains a close connection to the game in coming years.”In the WNCL, where Haynes played for Victoria and New South Wales, she scored 4528 runs at 43.12 with nine centuries. For NSW she sits fourth on the all-time run scoring list behind Alex Blackwell (4788), Lisa Sthalekar (3414) and Lisa Keightly (3081).

Big Hirst upgrade: McKenna could land "deadly" £80k-p/w star at Ipswich

Ipswich Town have been busy this transfer window to date as the Tractor Boys attempt everything in their power to save their skin in the Premier League.

Three new signings have joined the building in the form of Jaden Philogene-Bidace, Ben Godfrey and Julio Enciso, with some more fresh faces expected in through the door before Monday’s deadline.

Ipswich could look to boost their numbers in the striker position between now and then, with the Suffolk side lacking in depth up top away from main man Liam Delap.

Ipswich's other striker options

The relegation-threatened outfit only really have George Hirst in reserve in case Delap is having a rare off-day, owing to the fact Ali Al-Hamadi is now out on loan at Stoke City until the end of the campaign.

Hirst isn’t exactly firing on all cylinders either away from Al-Hamadi’s January exit, with the 25-year-old’s bad luck with injuries also a big worry for McKenna.

He did fire home seven goals last season as a reliable source of strikes in tense moments, but the 25-year-old only has one goal next to his name this time around up a league, with 12 clashes already missed through injury.

Therefore, he can’t be the only other option up top away from Delap who does have a stunning eight strikes on his Premier League resume, but has shown in recent games that he can’t be deadly machine all of the time particularly when facing off against some of the division’s elite clubs.

Off the back of this, McKenna could be eyeing up some fresh blood in the striker department with Ipswich now sniffing around for his former top-flight ace.

Ipswich could land dream Hirst upgrade

As reported earlier this week by Turkish outlet Milliyet, Ipswich seemingly made an attempt to land Galatasaray centre-forward Michy Batshuayi.

The ex-Chelsea man is also being looked at by West Ham United according to the report, with a further detail revealing that bids around the £4.1m mark have been fielded by the top-flight clubs to try and land the Belgian.

Michy Batshuayi

Whilst Batshuayi would obviously find it difficult to displace Delap as the leading marksman, he would no doubt give the ex-Manchester City star greater competition than Hirst is currently offering up when taking a quick glance at his Super Lig numbers.

The Galatasaray number 44 has bagged a reasonable seven goals in all competitions this season, which is just one off Delap’s Premier League tally, with the 31-year-old an impressive watch in the past when situated on English shores.

Looking at the table above, the nomadic attacker has often proven himself to be “deadly” – as he was once labelled by football journalist Josh Bunting – wherever he’s jumped ship to, with a promising 15 goals coming his way in the English top-flight previously.

McKenna could, therefore, utilise Batshuayi as an impact option off the bench when Delap is tiring or misfiring with the Ipswich boss perhaps more confident that the former Blues man can cut it at such a high level when compared next to Hirst.

The £80k-per-week forward will also feel there’s unfinished business for him in the Premier League having once been touted for greatness at Stamford Bridge, with the Belgian becoming an instant hero at Portman Road if he can chip in with a key goal or two to help his new team stave off relegation.

Arsenal now ready to smash £48m release clause for "world-class" forward

Arsenal are now ready to smash the release clause in a “world-class” forward’s contract to get a deal done this summer, according to a report.

Latest on Arsenal's pursuit of a striker

The Gunners ultimately opted not to increase their efforts to sign a new striker on deadline day, despite the fact Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins was desperate to move to the Emirates Stadium, having been a boyhood fan of the club.

Paul Merson was among those keen for the interest in Watkins to be stepped up in the closing stages of the January transfer window, saying: “I would get Watkins. I hear Arsenal fans say he’s 29. Who cares? It’s for now, next year and the year after. After that, it doesn’t matter.

“Put in £100m! If they do that, I’d be shocked if Villa turned that down!”

However, it seems as though Mikel Arteta has decided to re-assess his options in the summer, with the likes of Jonathan David and Benjamin Sesko being discussed as potential targets.

Arteta was chasing a striker throughout the winter transfer window, but Football Transfers have now dropped an update on a target in another position, claiming Athletic Club’s Nico Williams is the top target in attacking midfield.

The Gunners tried to sign Williams in January, but they were unable to get a deal done. However, they are showing a willingness to rekindle their interest in the summer. The north Londoners are even willing to pay above the €58m (£48m) release clause to get the deal over the line, displaying a real eagerness to sign the attacking midfielder.

The Spaniard is keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium, particularly because a number of his international teammates are currently plying their trade for Arsenal, namely David Raya and Mikel Merino, while Martin Zubimendi is poised to join in the summer.

The Spain international caught the eye with his impressive performances for his national side en-route to their Euro 2024 triumph, and he has put in some equally impressive displays at club level for Athletic Club.

The winger, who is capable of playing on either flank, amassed eight goals and 19 assists for the Spanish side in 37 matches last term, and he has gone on to prove himself in Europe this season, picking up two goals and two assists in the Europa League.

As such, it is exciting news that Arsenal are positioning themselves for a summer deal, and they will be hoping the allure of playing in the Champions League will be enough to tempt Williams into leaving his boyhood club.

Murtagh’s men hopeful after ending bleak day 79 runs behind Worcestershire with eight wickets in hand

Paul Edwards27-Sep-2022

In simple truth this was a scrappy, stop-start, on-off mess of a day at New Road. There were at least three interruptions – forgive me, after a while they merge together – and on one occasion umpires Nick Cook and Rob Bailey decided to take the players off, only to keep them on twenty seconds later when the sun reappeared from behind a cloud. Any spectator not versed in the game or understanding what was at stake might have thought they had wandered into an asylum; the last period of play lasted just two overs. Everyone minded, everyone was irritated but everyone understood. The cricket played over the next two days, some of it at Hove and Trent Bridge, but most if it at New Road, will determine whether Middlesex are playing in the First Division next year, so Tim Murtagh’s players can be encouraged that they ended this bleak, rainy, sunlit day just 79 runs behind Worcestershire with eight first-innings wickets in hand. The cricketer chiefly responsible for this modestly prosperous position may well never have batted in such conditions in all his spit. Pieter Malan had manged only 104 runs for Middlesex in his five Championship innings before this match but his unbeaten 68 was a masterpiece of concentration and technique on what is still a tricksy pitch and his unbroken stand of 73 with Max Holden for the third wicket has encouraged Middlesex supporters that they may even pick up a useful first-innings lead. Holden, who at 24 is nine years Malan’s junior, is 35 not out and will also have been warmly welcomed into the away dressing room on a gloomy rain-strewn evening.Thankfully the weather had been kinder during the luncheon interval and that was important because there were also fond and sorrowful end-of-season rituals to be performed on this antepenultimate day of the season. Both Moeen Ali and Ed Barnard are joining Warwickshire and Tom Fell is not being offered a new contract. All three received presentations during the lunch interval, Moeen and Fell in their absence, and one felt particularly for 28-year-old Fell, of whom so much was once expected. One also thought with pardonable bitterness of those former England cricketers who make damn-fool declarations that domestic cricket is soft or that there is too much of it. I wonder if Tom Fell agrees.Related

There were few easy runs on offer today and no sign of spinners. Worcestershire resumed on 167 for 8 but Dillon Pennington and Josh Tongue found run-scoring almost straightforward in the first half-hour of play. Maybe it was the effect of the roller but the pair had put on 45 before Pennington was leg before to Ryan Higgins for 13 in the 80th over. And, of course, the probable imminence of final wicket did not prevent Murtagh taking the new ball almost as soon as it became available. It was, though, required for only 15 deliveries before Ben Gibbon edged Toby Roland-Jones to John Simpson, so if you see an advert flogging a nearly new cricket ball in Wednesday’s edition of the , you will have a decent idea of its origins. The 58 runs scored by Worcestershire’s tail were valuable in themselves but also because they kept Mark Stoneman and Sam Robson in the field for nearly an hour before they began Middlesex’s reply. Openers relish such delays much as nervous patients enjoy sitting in a dentist’s waiting-room. One group sees Satan working on the pitch; the other imagines anguished yells from behind the surgery door. And Robson’s misgivings were certainly justified. Pennington’s third ball of the Middlesex innings may have been very quick but it could have been left alone. Instead of that, however, Robson intercepted it with a crooked bat and inside-edged it into his stumps. And matters would have got worse for Middlesex had Mark Stoneman not been dropped off Gibbon when Jack Haynes shelled a straightforward chest-high chance at second slip when the former England opener was on 10. Encouraged by this let-off Stoneman collected the single he needed to reach a thousand first-class runs for the season and went on to make 36 before he nicked a very rapid, lifter from Tongue, who is having another good match. That brought Holden out to join Malan, who hit successive back foot fours off Barnard and then reached his fifty with a pulled six off the same bowler. The day disintegrated into heavy showers and brief sunshine. Big shots were put away unless the invitations were irresistible. Holden has batted for 83 minutes and one wonders how much he has learned. Malan has been out there for a shade over three hours and it is only now, as darkness marches across New Road, that one realises how fine an innings it has been.

Salgado, Brazil e alguns vice-presidentes passaram toda a manhã reunidos no CT.

Shaheen Afridi could miss England, New Zealand Tests after knee injury

PCB says his “return to international cricket will be subject to successful completion of rehabilitation programme”

Umar Farooq14-Nov-20222:34

Mumtaz: Afridi’s injury tilted the contest dramatically

Pakistan are facing the prospect of another significant length of time without Shaheen Shah Afridi after he hurt* his right knee again in the men’s T20 World Cup final on Sunday in Melbourne. He has been advised two weeks of rehabilitation after a scan on Monday morning confirmed there were no signs of an injury and the knee discomfort was likely “due to a forced knee flexion whilst landing”. However, it appears unlikely that Afridi will be available for the home Tests against England and New Zealand through December-January; the PCB said his “return to international cricket will be subject to the champion fast bowler’s successful completion of the rehabilitation programme and following go-aheads by the medical staff.”Related

Hafeez: PCB handling of Afridi injury 'criminal'

From injury rust to purple patch – Afridi is back

Afridi was, in any case, expected to sit out the England Test series, which starts from December 1 in Rawalpindi. That was part of a planned gradual return to the longer format from the original knee injury – which had kept him for three-and-a-half months – that he had also picked up while fielding during a Test against Sri Lanka in Galle in July.He returned in time for the World Cup, and started Pakistan’s campaign at the marquee tournament slowly, feeling his way back into rhythm. By the time of the final, he appeared to be back to his best, reflected in returns of 4 for 22 against Bangladesh, 3 for 14 against South Africa, 3 and 24 in the semi-final against New Zealand, and 1 for 13 in the final against England until the injury. With 11 wickets, he was Pakistan’s joint-highest wicket-taker in the competition. As with the original injury, this one occurred while he was fielding during the 13th over of England’s chase. On this occasion in the final at the MCG, he ran in from long-off to hold on to a sharp chance from Harry Brook. As he slid low to hold on, he appeared to hurt his knee and was immediately in some pain. He was helped off the field by the team physio and doctor. He returned an over later, ran in gingerly to send down one delivery, but couldn’t carry on.The right knee appeared to buckle as Shaheen Afridi completed the catch to dismiss Harry Brook•PA Photos/Getty Images

His right knee is currently believed to be in a brace. Afridi will fly back home via Dubai with the rest of the Pakistan squad today. Haris Rauf is understood to be in line for a shot at red-ball cricket for the first time as Afridi’s replacement. The PCB’s handling of Afridi’s rehab from the original injury had come under scrutiny and criticism at the time. After he got injured he travelled with the team to the Netherlands for a three-match ODI series in August, in the hope that he would recover while on tour. That didn’t pan out as expected and the PCB eventually announced that he would be out for four to six weeks.Afridi continued to travel with the team to the UAE for the Asia Cup, as another attempt was made to get his rehab going. But medical scans and reports confirmed a posterior cruciate ligament injury and it was eventually decided that he would travel to the UK for further rehab and work with doctors on the PCB medical panel, Zafar Iqbal and Imtiaz Ahmed. He missed the Asia Cup as well as the seven-T20I home series against England in September, before joining up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the start of the world event.14:23 GMT – *This story has been updated to reflect details from the PCB’s statement

Liverpool offer for "exceptional" £50,000-a-week centre-back revealed

Liverpool are believed to have made a £50m offer for an “exceptional” defender ahead of the next transfer window, as the Reds look to strengthen in a key area.

Latest Liverpool news

The Merseysiders picked up a vital 2-1 win at home to Wolves on Sunday afternoon, taking them seven points clear at the top of the Premier League again. It was never the most convincing of performances by the leaders, but at this point, only victories matter up against Arsenal in the title race.

Regardless of what happens this season, Liverpool will need new signings this summer, in order to add a freshness to Arne Slot’s squad. Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven has been linked with a move to Anfield, with the Dutchman representing a potentially excellent option as Virgil van Dijk’s long-term heir at the heart of the defence.

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has also been backed to seal a stunning move to Anfield this summer, seeing him as a big upgrade on their current options. The Swede is among the best in Europe in his position currently, and for that reason, the Magpies are going to do all they can to keep hold of him.

There has been a big rumour regarding outgoing business at Liverpool, however, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly targeting a move for Ibrahima Konate at the end of the season. They see the Frenchman as an ideal centre-back partner for Marquinhos moving forward.

Liverpool make £50m offer for "exceptional" ace

According to a report from Spain, Liverpool have submitted a £50m bid for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, seeing him as an alternative option to the more injury prone Van de Ven.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs are all in the same boat, however, with the England international a wanted man, following some eye-catching performances at Euro 2024 last summer.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action

It is easy to see why Guehi is considered a standout choice to come in, especially considering his rather modest wages – in Premier League terms anyway – of £50,000 a week, which for comparison at Liverpool puts him level with Wataru Endo and below Kostas Tsimikas.

The 24-year-old has continued to be a consistent performer for Palace this season, starting 24 matches in the Premier League and averaging 4.6 clearances per game, as well as 2.6 aerial duel wins.

As mentioned, Guehi shone at the Euros, and his performances weren’t lost on then manager Gareth Southgate, who said of him: “He’s been exceptional. We obviously lose him now for the next game, but he’s a young defender that we’ve had enormous belief in and he’s justified that with his performances in this tournament.”

Liverpool supporters would likely be split on who would be the better option out of him and Van de Ven, but the fact that both are left-sided centre-backs with many years ahead of them means they are both great choices to be an eventual successor to Van Dijk.
