They claimed victory in six sessions as 34 wickets fell in fewer than 145 overs in the second-shortest Test in Australia

It only lasted two days. But it was action-packed, wicket-filled and run-rare. And in the end, Australia have the series lead. They claimed victory in six sessions as 34 wickets fell in fewer than 145 overs in the second-shortest Test in Australia. The frequency of dismissals means the unavoidable talking point will be the pitch, which was so green it was indiscernible from the outfield on day one, but it would be unfair to pin the result on the surface alone. Australia’s bowlers, especially in the latter part of the first and throughout the second innings, were accurate and incisive against a South African batting line-up. In 2022, South Africa have been dismissed for under 200 in Tests eight times, their most innings totals lower than 200 in a calendar year. In this Test match, their totals of 152 and 99 with top scores of 64 from Kyle Verreynne and 36* by Khaya Zondo were not enough.Australia also battled on the strip, which showed signs of inconsistent bounce abetted by the divots and lost four wickets in the chase, all to Kagiso Rabada. He is now the leading Test wicket-taker of the year and it will be small consolation for falling behind in a key contest. South Africa must win at least one Test to stay in contention for the World Test Championship final, while Australia lead the points table.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
The damage was done in the middle session, where South Africa were reduced to 66 for 7, level on scores after conceding an equivalent lead in the morning, but without much batting to come. Zondo, playing in only his third Test, gave a reasonable account of his ability especially against the short ball but only had support from Temba Bavuma, with whom he shared a 42-run fourth-wicket stand.By the time the pair came together, South Africa were 5 for 3 and has lost Dean Elgar, lbw to Pat Cummins, Rassie van der Dussen to a Mitchell Starc beauty that seamed in at pace and snuck through the bat-pad gap to give Starc his 300th Test wicket and Sarel Erwee, caught in the gully for the second time in the match.Bavuma and Zondo batted together for 99 balls and scored 42 runs between them, many of them nervy. They were beaten at least a dozen times but there were also some signs of form, such as when Bavuma leaned into a cover drive off Cummins and then Scott Boland and when Zondo swivel-pulled Cummins behind square. They were 19 runs short of erasing the deficit when a Nathan Lyon delivery stayed a touch low and struck Bavuma on the pad. He was given out and reviewed, with replays showing it was going on to clip leg stump.Mitchell Starc becomes the 7th Australian to take 300 Test wickets•Getty Images
In the next over, Boland found Kyle Verreynne’s outside edge with a delivery that moved away slightly and Steven Smith completed the catch at second slip. Two balls after that, Boland bowled Marco Jansen with an away-seamer. On the stroke of the scheduled tea break, Starc bagged another when Keshav Maharaj nicked off. South Africa were still two runs behind. They levelled scored by the tea break, but they did not appear to be building much of a lead when Cummins removed Rabada and Anrich Nortje in successive balls. Zondo farmed the strike for much of the time Lungi Ngidi was with him but Ngidi also got a couple away and South Africa set Australia 34 to win.Earlier, Australia took the lead in the first five deliveries as Rabada completed his overnight over. Cameron Green tucked into a half-volley and drove Rabada down the ground to put the hosts ahead. Green repeated the shot two more times in Rabada’s next two overs to force him out of the attack early, but that did not work to Australia’s advantage.Marco Jansen replaced Rabada and struck twice in his first over to clip Australia’s brisk start. Green received another half-volley, off Jansen’s second ball, and he attempted a booming drive. He only managed a thick edge that flew to Keshav Maharaj at third slip. Maharaj parried the ball up and Sarel Erwee, from first slip, ran behind him to take the catch. Two balls later, Travis Head was given out caught down the leg side. Head reviewed and though there was nothing on hotspot, snicko revealed a spike that confirmed he had hit both glove and shirt. His 96-ball innings finished on 92, and ultimately, proved a significant difference between the two sides.Australia’s lead was only 30 runs at that stage, and it was up to Alex Carey and the lower order to push that past 50. Starc lofted Jansen over mid-off and pulled Nortje through mid-wicket and put on 31 with Carey for the eighth wicket. Carey ran well in his short innings, with no boundaries in his 30-ball 22, but 12 singles, two threes and a four, which he and Starc ran. They took Australia’s lead to over 60 before Ngidi was introduced after the first drinks’ break and broke through. Starc hit Ngidi’s first ball in the air through mid-on for four and then drove the last ball aerially as well. Ngidi got down low in his follow-through and completed a good return catch.A pumped-up Rabada then bounced Cummins out, with three short balls in a row. The first popped up to point and Cummins was given out but reviewed successfully. Replays showed the ball had hit the arm guard. Cummins nearly edged the second and then pulled the third to mid-wicket, where Nortje was waiting. In this next over, Rabada had Lyon caught at mid-on to finish with four wickets in the innings.
For the second time in as many seasons, Aston Villa suffered a heavy defeat away to Crystal Palace. This time, they were defeated 4-1 at the hands of Oliver Glasner’s side, in a very disappointing collapse.
After going into the break 1-0 down via a goal from Ismaila Sarr, Villa equalised fairly quickly after the interval thanks to a lovely goal from Morgan Rogers. However, the Eagles retook the lead just before the hour mark, then added a third and fourth, including another goal from Sarr, to seal a fantastic win for the Eagles.
It was a dismal performance from Unai Emery’s side, who struggled to handle the destructive Jean-Phillipe Mateta.
Aston Villa’s struggles against Mateta
There has not been a striker more in form in the Premier League in 2025 than Mateta. According to TNT Sport, no player in the English top flight has more goals than the Frenchman in this calendar year so far, with eight strikes.
Jean-Philippe Mateta
Unfortunately for the Villans, they were on the receiving end of Mateta’s dominant form on Tuesday night. Despite playing with three centre-backs for the first time this season, the West Midlands club couldn’t handle Mateta.
Indeed, Birmingham Live journalist John Townley gave all three of Villa’s centre-backs, Lamar Bogarde, Axel Disasi and Ezri Konsa, a 4/10 rating at full-time. He explained that the Villans backline ‘was pulled apart’ after the halftime interval, which was certainly true given the four goals they conceded.
If anything, the Palace striker’s goal highlighted the struggles that Villa experienced at the back. Mateta was able to drift into acres of space, getting onto a loose ball and firing a shot home from inside the Villa box, relatively unchallenged.
It was a baptism of fire for Emery’s side, coming up against the Premier League’s most in-form player. Frustratingly, the West Midlands side perhaps sold their own version of the Palace striker.
Aston Villa already sold their own Mateta
Ollie Watkins is a fantastic player and has been crucial for Villa this season. The England international has 13 goals and ten assists in 37 games under Emery this term.
Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins celebrates scoring their first goal withLeonBailey
However, he can’t do it all alone, and perhaps Villa made the wrong call in selling his understudy in January.
Jhon Duran’s move from Villa Park to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr made the Villans a fortune. He made the move to Cristiano Ronaldo’s side for upwards of £71m in the January transfer window.
However, there is no doubt that his departure has left a bit of a hole in the squad. The Colombian was scintillating for Villa, scoring 20 goals in 78 games.
However, he played just 2272 minutes in that famous Claret and Blue shirt, the equivalent of 25 full 90-minute games. He was deadly in front of goal, a “true monster” according to football talent scout Jacek Kulig.
Selling Duran might seem like a strange decision on reflection, given just how good of a goalscorer he is.
However, Jamie Carragher explained in January that he thought Villa should “go against the grain” and sell their striking sensation. Of course, they did just that.
Interestingly, over the last two domestic league seasons, Duran and Mateta are actually quite similar statistically on FBref.
For example, the Frenchman averages 0.39 goal-creating actions per game, compared to 0.4 by Duran, and both average 0.25 goals per shot.

Moving Duran on in the winter transfer window was a bold call from Villa. At the start of February, Emery and co were actually linked with a move for Mateta in the summer, as per journalist Graeme Bailey.
Perhaps they could have saved themselves a fortune by keeping one of the hottest prospects in football instead.

Coach wants England to “call on good experiences” in bid to reclaim the urn from Australia

Brendon McCullum admits next summer’s Ashes series is “a big carrot” for his new and improved England men’s Test side, as thoughts turn to next year’s challenges after a remarkable end to the 2022 campaign. On Tuesday in Karachi, England closed out a convincing 3-0 win over Pakistan to give McCullum a third series victory as head coach. Since taking over at the start of the summer, he and captain Ben Stokes have overseen nine victories in 10 matches. The scale of the red-ball resurgence over the last seven months is such that the scars of a horrendous run of one win in 17 before McCullum and Stokes took over seem to have disappeared. That stretch included a demoralising 4-0 defeat in Australia last winter which led to plenty of introspection in the domestic game – not least the publication of Sir Andrew Strauss’ High Performance Review. Now, however, there is a belief among the England team they are more than a match for all comers in all conditions. Thus, the prospect of beating Australia for the first time since 2015 is a tantalising one.McCullum has been reticent to look far ahead and has not been afraid to express his frustration at England’s Ashes obsession: “You guys do this all the time, eh?” he said when asked about facing Australia on the Karachi outfield. Nevertheless, with just two Tests against New Zealand in February and then a single home Test against Ireland before the five-match series starts at Edgbaston on June 16, he admits the challenge Australia will pose has entered the management’s thoughts.Related

McCullum believes efforts to reclaim the urn next season will rely on the experiences banked in Pakistan, which England will need to call on against a fierce adversary. “From our point of view, we will have loose plans about that stuff,” he said, when asked about the Ashes. “It is a big carrot down the line.”At the same time, I want the guys to enjoy what we have been able to achieve here. Just like the summer the message is not look too far ahead. Let’s live in the here and now of what we have achieved. Let that sink it. It will take some time to sink in.”I think it is the same with the success this team has had. We have to allow that to sink in because there will be tough challenges in time. And if you have not banked those good experiences, what have you got to call on?”Since England began making headlines with their aggressive approach while talking up how they are looking to change Test cricket, there have been a few back-and-forths with their rivals Down Under. The ‘Bazball’ moniker for the style of play they have adopted has been a source of amusement in the Australian dressing room, with the team putting up a ‘Ronball’ sign in their dressing room during their recent Test match against West Indies [their head coach Andrew MacDonald is nicknamed ‘Ron’, after Ronald McDonald].On Tuesday, Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori credited his friend and former teammate McCullum for the turnaround he has instigated: “That’s Brendon’s nature,” he said. “There is positivity in everything he does.” He also anticipates an intriguing contest between a heavy-hitting batting line-up and a strong Australian bowling attack, who could provide Stokes’ charges with their toughest challenge yet.Vettori expects England to “give it a go” when he faces his friend McCullum in the Ashes•BCCI
“They are going to give it a go, it looks like,” Vettori said. “I think that is what everyone is excited about: that aggressive nature versus an exceptional bowling attack.”Many sceptics are waiting for England’s Test bubble to burst, and predictions of coming unstuck in Pakistan were categorically trumped. However, an Australia bowling line-up with all bases covered could do just that, especially given the manner in which a strong South African pace attack inflicted England’s only defeat under McCullum and Stokes at Lord’s in July. But Mark Wood, the fast bowler who was crucial to securing victory in the second Test in Multan, believes England will relish the opportunity to continue to prove their doubters wrong.”It’s more the fact people keep doubting us,” Wood said, when asked about the anticipation for England trying out their new brand of cricket against Australia. “You can’t go to Pakistan and do that. You’ll never be able to do that against India. Or against New Zealand.”So it’s about [trying to] keep breaking records, keep trying to prove people wrong, play this way and show that, hopefully, other teams will take notice and think they have to be on their ‘A’ game to take on this England team.”
Manchester United are now keen on signing an “unbelievable” forward who’s scored 17 goals already this season, but they may face competition for his signature from Premier League rivals Newcastle United, according to a report.
Man Utd eyeing a forward
Truth be told, Man United will probably need to strengthen in multiple positions if they are to challenge near the top of the table next season, but they are seemingly particularly keen on refreshing their attacking options, having identified multiple targets.
Amid Jim Ratcliffe’s ongoing cost-cutting measures, United are making progress towards signing Lille striker Jonathan David, who will be available on a free transfer this summer, while they have also been linked with an audacious move for FC Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal.
Ruben Amorim is searching for attackers who can guarantee goals, given that Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have failed to find the back of the net on a regular basis this season, and he has now identified a target who is enjoying a solid season in Italy.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Red Devils are keen on a move for Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman this summer, with the Italian club willing to sanction his departure for around £54m, amid an ongoing spat with manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

Lookman was branded “one of the worst penalty takers” by Gasperini after missing a penalty in a loss against Club Brugge in the Champions League, which led to the Italian side’s exit, and he has since hit back at the manager on social media.
As such, several clubs are now monitoring the forward’s situation at Atalanta, with Newcastle also named as potential suitors, alongside Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Inter Milan, with the race for his signature said to be wide open.

"Unbelievable" Lookman impressing in Italy
It was a little harsh for Gasperini to publicly criticise the Atalanta star, given that he has been in fantastic form this season, netting 17 goals in all competitions, and he also played a major role in the Italian side’s Europa League triumph last season.
The Nigerian netted a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen, with his side going on to lift the trophy, and he was branded as “unbelievable” by teammate Sead Kolasinac in the wake of his performance.
The London-born forward seemingly hasn’t been affected by his manager’s criticism, however, scoring a brace in Atalanta’s 2-0 victory over Empoli last time out.
Lookman has developed considerably since being handed his Premier League debut during his time with Everton, and his performances in the Serie A and Europe indicate he could be a fantastic signing for United this summer.

Celtic waved goodbye to a fan favourite during the January transfer window when they decided to cash in on Japanese centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi.
The Hoops, who also brought a fan favourite back to Parkhead in Portuguese winger Jota, cashed in on the Japan international amid interest from Ligue 1 side Rennes.
Celtic reportedly raked in a fee of £10m for the experienced number nine, a few months on from Manchester City’s reported interest in his services last summer, leaving Brendan Rodgers with Adam Idah as his only natural, senior, striker.
The Scottish Premiership champions hit the jackpot with their sale of Kyogo when you consider how much they paid for him back in the summer of 2021.
Celtic hit gold with Kyogo Furuhashi
Ange Postecoglou swooped to sign the striker from Vissel Kobe for a reported fee of £4.6m ahead of the 2021/22 campaign and he scored 20 goals in all competitions during his debut season.
As you can see in the clips above, Kyogo went on to score 34 goals in all competitions in the 2022/23 campaign under the Australian head coach.
By the time he completed his move to Rennes earlier this year, the 30-year-old forward had scored 85 goals in 165 matches for the club – a terrific return from a superb player who also made the Hoops millions in profit by moving to France for £5.4m more than what they paid Vissel Kobe for him.
He is far from the only striker Celtic have struck gold with over the years, however, and Moussa Dembele is one star who was sold for even more than the Japan international.
Celtic's Moussa Dembele masterclass
The Scottish giants took advantage of the striker’s contract with Fulham running out and signed him for a compensation fee of £500k in the summer of 2016.

It is fair to say that the French marksman hit the ground running at Parkhead. He ended the 2016/17 campaign with a return of 32 goals and nine assists in 49 appearances, 12 more goals than Kyogo managed in his first year in Glasgow.
The Hoops star followed that up with 16 goals and nine assists in 39 appearances in the following season, including one goal in four Champions League outings.
Despite his drop in form, Ligue 1 side Lyon swooped in to sign the French centre-forward from the Premiership giants for a reported fee of £19.7m – £9.7m more than Rennes have paid for Kyogo.

As you can see in the table above, Dembele became the most expensive striker in Celtic history when he completed that move, and that has yet to change in the seven years since that deal.
The Hoops hit the jackpot with the former Fulham man because his value soared by a staggering 3,840% from £500k to £19.7m, despite him only being at Parkhead for two years.

This shows that Celtic played a masterclass with the Frenchman because they plucked him out of England for a modest compensation fee and made a mind-blowing profit on him, whilst also getting excellent performances out of him on the pitch, after two seasons.
