Quinn, Agar rip through batting before Muyeye half-century extends advantage

Leaders Surrey were battling hard to avoid their first defeat of the season in the LV= Insurance County Championship, taking six wickets in the final session after Kent had built a significant lead on day two at Canterbury. The champions were all out for 145 in their first innings with Matt Quinn taking three for 22 and Wes Agar three for 32, while India’s Arshdeep Singh took his first championship wickets. Sean Abbott was their top scorer with 34.Tawanda Muyeye then cracked a gleeful 79 and Daniel Bell-Drummond made 59 as Kent moved on to 197 for six in their second innings, a lead of 353, but a productive evening session gave the visitors hope going into day three, Dan Worrall claiming three for 53.The 171st Canterbury Week continued at the Spitfire Ground and a crowd of 2431 attended on day two, bolstered by around 1100 schoolchildren and teachers, although the start was delayed by 45 minutes due to a brief but violent thunderstorm. When play began Surrey, who were 18 for two overnight, batted with minimal conviction.Tom Latham was on three when Quinn had him caught by Muyeye at short leg and Quinn struck again when Jordan Cox took an acrobatic catch to remove Dom Sibley for 9.Arshdeep was rewarded for a spell of sustained menace with his first wicket in county cricket when he had Ben Foakes lbw for three and Quinn and Muyeye then produced an almost exact imitation of the Latham wicket to get rid of Jamie Smith for 6.Surrey lurched to 60 for six at lunch and hadn’t added to the score when Agar bowled Will Jacks with the tenth ball of the afternoon session, with a delivery that sent his middle stump pirouetting.Jordan Clark and Abbott put on the biggest stand of the innings with 48 for the eighth wicket, until both were dismissed by Joey Evison. Clark lingered for 25 before Evison hit his leg side bail and Abbott went for 34 in Evison’s next over, after a one-handed catch by Cox.The Dans, Worrall and Moriarty, added 20 for the last wicket until the former tried to slog Singh, who ripped out his leg stump, leaving Surrey seven short of the follow-on target, although with 57 overs left and the St. Lawrence experiencing sweltering conditions it was no surprise when Kent chose not to enforce it.They were 37 without loss at tea, and although Clark made the breakthrough with his first ball, getting Compton caught for 17 by Atkinson at point, Muyeye started to put on an exhibition. He reached 50 by cutting Abbott for four, but not for the first time in his career he fell when a century looked there for the taking when he hit Atkinson to Latham. It was a major disappointment for the majority of the crowd and a cluster of wickets followed.Denly went for six to Worrall that was grabbed by a diving Foakes, Worrall produced an unplayable outswinger to get rid of Jack Leaning for one and Cox was on two when he gloved Abbott behind.Bell-Drummond then fell in nearly identical fashion, leaving Evison and Hamid Qadri to bat out the rest of an almost interminable session, which finally ended at 7.37pm.

Shakeel and Agha Salman hit attacking fifties to snatch the momentum back for Pakistan

Sri Lanka, who were in the driver’s seat with Pakistan 101 for 5 in reply to their 312, will need quick wickets on the third morning to bounce back

Stumps A see-sawing day ended with Pakistan wresting back the momentum from Sri Lanka thanks to a counter-attacking partnership between Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman. Half-centuries for the two in an unbeaten stand of 120 means Pakistan are now just 91 runs behind Sri Lanka’s first-innings total of 312, and might well have made a deeper dent into that deficit if monsoon rains hadn’t brought the day to a premature close. But it was more the speed of the run-scoring than the accumulation which impressed. Across 38 overs, Pakistan scored at just a tick under five, spearheaded initially by Shan Masood. But Agha and Shakeel, traditionally much more conservative in their approach in international cricket, took the baton and ran with it in a frenetic final hour that saw all of Sri Lanka’s bowlers put to the sword as Pakistan stormed back into the contest.Related

Finding themselves five wickets down with a deficit greater than 200 and Nauman Ali to come in next, most Pakistan sides would have gone into their shell. But instead of waiting for Prabath Jayasuriya or Ramesh Mendis to invariably find a ball that breached their defences, the pair began to exploit gaps, rotate the strike, use their feet and find the boundary. Shakeel’s drive over Jayasuriya’s head early on was a statement of intent and a couple of slogs over cow corner from Agha forced Sri Lanka’s best bowler out of the attack. Both players brought up fifties, and as the runs continued to flow, Sri Lanka appeared to run out of ideas, turning to Kasun Rajitha’s pace. The middle session had moved the game along more than the entirety of the first day, with Sri Lanka’s spinners demonstrating clear superiority over their counterparts in these conditions. Jayasuriya’s three wickets put Sri Lanka on top even as Pakistan took the attack to the bowlers. Masood’s 30-ball 39 epitomised that approach as Pakistan moved along at 4.71 runs per over, though it did come with the loss of half the side.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Abdullah Shafique survived an exceptionally close lbw shout in the first over before Imam-ul-Haq fell playing a rash cover drive in the second, spooning it into backward point’s lap. Masood’s arrival heralded the start of the only passage in that phase where Pakistan were dominant. Picking up from an impressive display in the two-day warm-up game in Hambantota, Masood continued in the same fashion. He was adept at carving the ball through the covers, exploiting gaps and getting the run rate ticking. His approach against the quicks necessitated Sri Lanka turning to Jayasuriya as early as in the ninth over, and Masood showed him enough respect to play out a maiden. Ramesh was not afforded the same regard, Masood saving the shot of the innings so far for him, dancing down the track to clobber him over mid-on for a colossal six to get to 39. The very next delivery, though, had him pinned back on leg stump. The umpire didn’t raise the finger but Sri Lanka reviewed, and Hawkeye flashed up three reds, sending a disbelieving Shan on his way.By now, Jayasuriya had already begun to work his magic, sending Shafique on his way with a hint of extra turn. It would get better for Sri Lanka, when Babar Azam top-edged an arm ball straight up to the keeper, exposing Sarfaraz Ahmed and an inexperienced lower-middle order with Pakistan still 239 runs behind.Mastery against spin is considered one of Sarfaraz’s strengths, but a sweep too many off Jayasuriya found him struck adjacent enough to be given out lbw in the last half-hour before tea. It left the two new men in Pakistan’s middle order, Agha and Shakeel, to hold Sri Lanka’s relentless spinners off.Prabath Jayasuriya gave the afternoon session to Sri Lanka•Associated Press

In the morning, Pakistan bowled Sri Lanka out for 312, but not before Sri Lanka had added a useful 70 runs with the last four wickets.Over the course of a slightly scrappy morning session, Dhananjaya de Silva stood out. Having been unbeaten overnight on 94, he was in no rush to snatch at the three-figure mark, taking about half an hour to get to the mark with a whip towards fine leg. Alongside Ramesh, who was offering doggedness but not many runs, de Silva prioritised survival over quick run-scoring. It was an arrangement Pakistan were content with as the spinners operated on autopilot while they awaited the new ball, and a slash from Ramesh off Abrar Ahmed soon brought the gritty partnership to an end.Babar called up Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah for an extended spell with the new ball. Afridi’s pace was up and he found more movement, but it was Naseem who ended up in the wickets, dispatching Jayasuriya with a short delivery the tailender got a feather to. And when de Silva decided it was time to up the ante, he fell as soon as he played an attacking shot, a mistimed drive over backward point caught brilliantly by a scampering Masood. By now, though, he had scored 122, rescuing an innings that badly needed salvaging after the first session yesterday.Sri Lanka’s Nos. 10 and 11 held Pakistan off much longer than anticipated, though, and scored runs while doing it. Rajitha and Vishwa Fernando added 29 runs for that last wicket, ensuring Sri Lanka crossed 300, and perhaps edging the session in their favour. That dominance looked to have been underscored firmly through the afternoon, but Pakistan’s late onslaught means the Test remains finely balanced under Galle’s mercurial skies.

Abbott, Jacks finish the job as Surrey maintain pace at the top

Surrey 433 (Smith 138, Burns 79, Clark 78, Helm 6-110) and 78 for 2 (Jacks 45*) beat Middlesex 238 (Simpson 60, Holden 55, Abbott 3-37, Overton 3-45, Lawes 3-57) and 272 (Stoneman 72, Bamber 46*, Abbott 4-60) by eight wicketsWill Jacks struck a swift unbeaten 45 as Surrey motored to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over neighbours Middlesex inside an hour on the final morning. The LV= Insurance County Championship front-runners needed only 11.1 overs to chase down a modest target of 78, completing their second derby success of the season and a first red-ball win at Lord’s for 26 years. Middlesex, who remain second from bottom in Division One, have now lost four of their last five Championship fixtures.”We were pretty clinical, I think, over three and a bit days,” Rory Burns, Surrey’s captain, said. “There are a few bits we could have tidied up on but, if you’d offered us that before the start of the game, we’d have taken it. Particularly after getting inserted on the first morning, to put up 433 as a batting group and then back that up by making them follow on – and the way we went about it – I think it’s a big feather in our caps.”I thought Jamie [Smith] played beautifully [in the first innings] and Jordan [Clark] was in pretty good nick as well. The way he came in and played was excellent, to get ourselves up to that sort of total was brilliant.”It’s a tough shift, any time you make someone follow on – I think we had about 150 [overs] in the dirt there, back to back. To take 20 wickets and keep being quite relentless over that period is a massive effort. Getting a wicket second ball [today] is always handy. The weather probably had a part to play in our chase as well, we were looking to get it done as quickly as we could.”With rain forecast for later in the day, Surrey were keen to secure the result as quickly as possible after bowling their hosts out for 272, with seamer Sean Abbott returning figures of 4 for 60.Abbott took only two deliveries to finish off Middlesex’s second innings when play resumed, banging it in short to last man Tim Murtagh, who could only fend it off into the slip area and Dom Sibley took the catch. That left Ethan Bamber stranded on a career-best 46 not out and Surrey with 78 to score – just five more than the target they chased to complete a nine-wicket victory against Middlesex at the Oval in May.First-innings centurion Smith was promoted to begin the chase with Burns, but he lasted just two balls on this occasion before clipping Tom Helm tamely into the hands of midwicket. Helm picked up a second wicket, his eighth of the match, when Burns attempted a paddle from outside off stump that was neatly taken by Murtagh at long leg, but Jacks maintained momentum by clouting Bamber over the cover boundary.Tom Latham also struck a maximum off Helm before hitting the winning runs off Mark Stoneman to finish unbeaten on 21.

John Turner ruled out of New Zealand T20Is, Brydon Carse earns call-up

Side strain denies fast bowler chance of England debut as selectors overlook proven back-up

John Turner, the uncapped Hampshire fast bowler, has been ruled out of England’s T20I squad for this month’s series against New Zealand after sustaining a side injury during his Men’s Hundred stint with Trent Rockets. He will be replaced by the Durham quick, Brydon Carse.Turner, 22, had been the surprise call-up for England’s 20-over squad when it was unveiled last week, having made his professional debut in the format as recently as June. His ability as a 90mph-plus bowler was highlighted in his most recent outing, when he bowled Jonny Bairstow on his Hundred debut against Welsh Fire in Cardiff. However, he has not featured in the competition since.Related

Carse, a fellow South Africa-born quick, steps into the vacancy created by Turner’s injury. Despite claiming a solitary wicket in six outings for Northern Superchargers in this year’s Hundred, he remains highly rated by the selectors, having played nine ODIs in the past two years, most recently against South Africa on his county home ground at Chester-le-Street – the same venue where he could now make his T20I debut against New Zealand on August 30.He has been preferred in the T20I squad to several proven competitors, not least Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills, both of whom have been in fine form with the ball for Southern Brave. However, with England’s white-ball squad focussed on the forthcoming 50-over World Cup, which gets underway in India in October, the 20-over series is being used by the selectors to explore the team’s bench-strength, with Josh Tongue and Luke Wood also named in the squad, alongside Gus Atkinson, who is England’s surprise pick for the 50-over set-up in the absence of the injured Jofra Archer.John Turner removed Jonny Bairstow on his Hundred debut•Alex Davidson/Getty Images

Explaining the desire to test the strength of England’s pace reserves, Luke Wright, the national selector, acknowledged that the risk of injury was a constant concern, therefore broadening the experience of the available resources was a priority, with the next T20 World Cup looming in June next year.”It’s something we’re really excited about, to see the amount of pace that is going around in county cricket with these guys that have come through,” Wright said last week. “We have to look ahead to that T20 World Cup next year as well, and try and get as much depth as possible. And we know with these fast bowlers, there’s going to be injuries with them.”So to have that depth but give them that exposure as well is obviously going to be hugely important. I think it’s really exciting to see these guys coming through. It’s been hugely impressive watching them in the Hundred and I look forward to seeing them go against New Zealand.”
