Bellerin takes swipe at Deeney following Arsenal’s late win over Burnley

In October Watford forward Troy Deeney accused the Arsenal team of not having enough “cojones” on the pitch. The comments were made after the Hornets caused an upset by claiming a 2-1 win over the Gunners at Vicarage Road.Arsene Wenger’s side were leading by a Per Mertesacker goal until the 72nd minute when Deeney netted from the penalty spot.Tom Cleverley snatched a winner in the 92nd minute, much like Arsenal did in Sunday’s Premier League game against Burnley at Turf Moor.Aaron Ramsey won a penalty in injury time and Alexis Sanchez converted from the spot to give the North London outfit all three points. After the match, Hector Bellerin, who played the entire 90 minutes of the contest, took to Twitter to deliver his post-match thoughts.Alongside a picture of the team celebrating the winner, the right-back took a sly dig at Deeney.

Arsenal currently sit fourth in the league table, one point above arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur and four adrift of second-placed Manchester United.

Manchester City lead the way with an eight-point advantage over the rest of the field.

Expert Predictions: Arsenal vs Man United

Arsenal host Manchester United in the Premier League’s biggest game this weekend, one fulled by the historic rivalry between not only the two clubs but also the two managers, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. Throw in the fact both teams are jostling for superiority amongst the mini-league at the Premier League’s summit and will be desperate to gain ground on Manchester City, at least until Sunday when the pace-setters face West Ham, and Saturday’s 5.30pm kickoff looks set to be a key encounter that could have a significant impact on both the Gunners’ and the Red Devils’ respective campaigns. So how will this game pan out and more crucially, who will come out on top? This week’s experts, Snack-Media’s very own Arsenal fan Josh Challies and Niven Marston from ManUNews, share their thoughts…

Arsenal enter Saturday’s game off the back of a resounding 5-0 win over Huddersfield but it did come with a price – Alexandre Lacazette came off at half time with an injury that has ruled him out of the Manchester United game, something Wenger confirmed in midweek. That leaves the Arsenal boss facing a big decision up top, with Danny Welbeck, Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez the leading candidates to fill the void. Who would you start up front in Lacazette’s absence and why?

JC: “Given his performance off the bench in midweek against Huddersfield, Giroud should not be overlooked. His presence in the attack can bully Manchester United’s defence, whilst his movement is often extremely underrated. With Mesut Ozil and Sanchez supporting him, as well as the flying wing-backs of Sead Kolasinac and Hector Bellerin, Arsenal’s attacking ranks look devastating- and Giroud can also help with defending set pieces, so it’s a win-win situation. Alexis Sanchez blows hot and cold, whilst Welbeck still looks shaky. It really shouldn’t be too much of a decision for Wenger.”

Perhaps the biggest selection dilemma for Mourinho, meanwhile, is whether his side should look to ‘match up’ with Arsenal – an increasingly common phrase since the emergence of 3-4-3 at the top of the Premier League last season. We’ve already seen United match up with Chelsea and Tottenham this term and the 3-4-3 used against Watford in midweek suggests Mourinho plans to set his side up that way at the Emirates Stadium too. Should Mourinho stick with three at the back against Arsenal or revert to his more trusted 4-2-3-1 system?

NM: “I’m not usually one for favouring three at the back, but I think United should continue playing with the 3-4-3 formation they displayed against Watford. United looked extremely comfortable at the back against the Hornets, and despite conceding two goals they were actually fairly solid. I think it’s fair to say United’s first choice centre-backs are Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, but with the pair likely out injured it leaves Mourinho having to pick from Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof. Each of them are prone to a mistake or two, and I think Mourinho will try and avoid this happening by deploying a defensive 3-4-3 against Arsenal. Lindelof may not have had the start to life at United he hoped for, but the Swede looks like a different man when playing in a back three. With the added protection of two further centre-backs and the brilliance of Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, who look like the best wing-backs in the league at the moment, Mourinho may have found a perfect defensive formula.”

If there’s another significant change we could see from United, it’s up front. Romelu Lukaku may be the most expensive striker signing in Premier League history but he’s scored just one goal in his last eleven games. Mourinho’s almost made a point of not publicly criticising the Belgium international, insisting he continues to put in a good job for the team, but the presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench makes that barren spell hard to ignore. Would you start Ibrahimovic at Lukaku’s expense against Arsenal?

NM: “Lukaku’s poor form in front of goal has seen him come under an awful lot of criticism lately. Strikers simply have to score goals if they are to keep fans and pundits happy. We all know how quick the Belgian got off the mark at United, and he looked like an early contender for the Golden Boot award, but things haven’t gone quite so swimmingly since. Lukaku finds himself with one Manchester United goal to his name since the end of September, and the suggestion that Ibrahimovic should take his place up front is turning into a real debate. I personally think that Lukaku has been excellent for United all-season long. The goals haven’t been coming as much as we’d like to see, but his performances regardless have been spot on. Jose Mourinho isn’t one to shy away from criticising his players for their short comings, but he has given Lukaku nothing but praise since signing him. The Belgian clearly works hard on and off the pitch for the Red Devils and I’m confident he will find the net against Arsenal or City in the upcoming fixtures. I don’t believe Ibrahimovic should take his place up front at all, but I would like to see the pair start alongside each other at some point.”

In any other season, United would probably be enjoying far more critical acclaim. Only second to Manchester City who have been simply phenomenal, Mourinho has put a strong, quick and powerful side together that can win different kinds of games in different ways. From an Arsenal perspective, what concerns you most about this United side?

JC: “A lot gets said about Mourinho’s tactical set-up away from home and it’s likely to frustrate Arsenal this weekend. Their organisation should be the biggest concern for Arsenal, who have often struggled against a well-drilled team. The midfield battle will be crucial and Manchester United will certainly feel they have the edge in this area. What Arsenal cannot do is get complacent, even if they are dominating possession, and they need to be wary of counter-attacks.”

At the same time though, Mourinho’s side clearly isn’t perfect. They’ve dropped points against two huge rivals in Liverpool and Chelsea, as well as against lesser teams like Huddersfield and Stoke. Likewise, Arsenal have won all seven of their home games so far this season, so the north Londoners should feel confident going into Saturday’s game. What United weaknesses can Arsenal take advantage of?

JC: “I think Mourinho’s tactics could benefit Arsenal, often going negative in the big games, as long as the Gunners hit the ground running. Scoring an early goal would get the crowd at the Emirates Stadium going properly, just like it was during the north London derby a few weeks ago. Manchester United’s attack hasn’t been firing on all cylinders over the last few months and their recent record visiting us isn’t great, whilst our defensive trio of Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal has been strong. I think that’s where we’ll edge the game, though we need to take our chances.”

What do you see as the deciding factor in this game?

NM: “I think Paul Pogba will be a key factor in this game. He missed United’s ties with Liverpool and Chelsea, and the general view is that if he was playing things would’ve been much different. He will be expected to play against Arsenal, and in doing so it will be interesting to see what sort of impact he has on the game. If he is up to the standard we know he’s capable of, I don’t see Arsenal’s midfield being able to cope.”

And finally lads, let’s hear your score predictions…

NM: “0-1 United.”

JC: “Ever the optimist, I’m going for a 2-0 Arsenal win. I certainly don’t think Arsene Wenger’s side will lose this weekend, especially as they’ve won their last 12 Premier League matches at the Emirates Stadium in a row.”

In Focus: Newcastle will be confident of Shaw loan deal if Tottenham keep quiet

According to reports in The Mirror, Newcastle United have been priced out of signing Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw in a permanent deal with Jose Mourinho demanding £20m for the England international.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Mirror says that the Magpies are keen to bring the 22-year-old to St James’ Park during the January transfer window, but the price tag means that they will only be able to sign the left-back on loan.

The Mirror says that as well as the Tyneside outfit, there are also a number of other Premier League teams keen on a similar deal for the former Southampton man, who has found himself firmly out of favour at Old Trafford this season.

The report adds that despite his lack of game time, Shaw has established himself as one of the Red Devils’ fittest players having been criticised by Mourinho in the past.

How has he fared this term?

Not too well, to be honest.

Shaw’s first-team appearances have been limited to two substitute outings in the Carabao Cup, while he was an unused substitute for the Premier League win against the Magpies last month and the Champions League ties against Benfica and FC Basel.

The 22-year-old appears to be behind the likes of Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind in the pecking order for the left-back and left wing-back roles, and he doesn’t appear to have a future with United.

Would he be a good signing for Newcastle?

He certainly would be.

The Magpies are in desperate need of a left-back with Paul Dummett injured and right-back Javier Manquillo currently filling in there, and with game time and fitness there is no doubt that Shaw would prove to be a brilliant addition.

The 22-year-old showed his qualities at Southampton and also on plenty of occasions throughout his Red Devils career, but now he needs to play regularly to find that consistency again.

Will they get him?

It’s difficult to say.

While Newcastle will certainly be an attractive option, it could depend who else comes in for him in January.

Shaw may favour a move back down south rather than to Tyneside, while interest from a club like Tottenham may be too good to turn down given his strong relationship with Mauricio Pochettino.

In Focus: Everton target Christian Benteke won’t come on the cheap in January

According to reports in the Sunday Mirror, Everton manager Sam Allardyce is set to target a move for £32m Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke during the January transfer window as he finally looks to sign Romelu Lukaku’s replacement.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Sunday Mirror says that Allardyce is keen to beef up his side’s attacking options after they failed to being in a centre-forward to be Lukaku’s successor at Goodison Park during the summer, and the 63-year-old boss is keen to be reunited with Benteke having worked with him last season.

The Eagles signed the 27-year-old from Liverpool in 2016 in a deal that could eventually cost them £32m, and considering they are battling against the drop they certainly won’t want to lose one of the few strikers they do have on the cheap.

The Sunday Mirror adds that Allardyce has been told that he must sell before he buys.

How has Benteke done this season?

Even though he scored an impressive 15 goals in 36 Premier League appearances during his debut campaign for Palace, the Belgium international has found this term far more difficult – especially when the team were struggling and bottom of the table.

The 27-year-old had failed to find the net or assist in his opening 10 top flight outings this term, and he decided he would take a late penalty that would have seen them beat Bournemouth 3-2 at Selhurst Park last weekend if he converted it.

However, the centre-forward’s weak spot-kick was saved and the Eagles only took a point, and manager Roy Hodgson confirmed that Benteke shouldn’t have taken it after the game.

The striker went from zero to hero in the space of seven days though as he scored one and assisted another in the 3-0 victory against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Would he be a good signing for Everton?

He certainly would be.

A tall and strong striker like Benteke fits perfectly into the way that Big Sam likes to play, and his goal record has been pretty decent at Aston Villa and now Palace, despite a relatively disappointing spell with Liverpool.

The 27-year-old’s goal drought earlier this season may be a concern for some Toffees supporters, but like many other strikers the Belgian is a confidence player and there is no doubt that he is a real threat for opposition defenders even if he isn’t finding the net.

Revealed: Over two thirds of Everton fans want Mawson

Everton fans have been debating a swoop for Alfie Mawson, and the majority of fans would love to swoop for the towering Swansea defender.

Swansea City co-owner Jason Levein has admitted that Mawson’s future is “unclear” following interest from the Premier League, and the blue half of Merseyside clearly fancies their chances.

Reports have suggested Yerry Mina is the Toffees top target to buff up their defence, but the 24 year-old Mawson could be a more reliable option thanks to his experience in the Premier League.

The young Englishman was unlucky not to find himself in the World Cup squad, and he was the one silver lining in Swansea’s relegation season, dominating Cenk Tosun in a 1-1 draw between his side and Everton at the Liberty Stadium in April.

“It’s unclear at this point,” said Levien when asked about the defender’s future.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”269905″ player=”12034″ title=”Football’s Coming Home The Myth Behind ‘Three Lions'”]

“There are a few different ways that could work out. Alfie is a terrific player, he had a great couple of years with us and we value his abilities.

“Certainly we understand the market and there are going to be clubs interested in Alfie Mawson.”

The Toffees have already lost Ramiro Funes Mori, and Phil Jagielka’s age means they simply must add at least one new centre back this summer.

Mawson is calm, composed and an excellent leader for his age, so he could be the long-term replacement for Jagielka and an excellent partner for Michael Keane.

West Ham United fans digest rumours club are willing to offload Arnautovic

Marko Arnautovic took time to settle in at West Ham United when he signed from Stoke City last summer.

However, when David Moyes took over from Slaven Bilic as manager in November, the Austrian began playing as the focal point of attack, and the goals came.

In total, Arnautovic scored 11 times in 31 Premier League matches and he also created six assists.

The 29-year-old swiftly became one of the team’s most important players, and even kept Javier Hernandez out of his favoured position.

This summer, the Hammers have been busy in the transfer window, recruiting seven new faces, the most recent of which being Felipe Anderson.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255853″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch West Ham’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

The Brazilian provides West Ham’s new boss Manuel Pellegrini a different dimension in attack, and due to his arrival, questions have been raised over Arnautovic’s future.

According to a report in Italian publication Leggo on Tuesday, the East London outfit are open to selling the Austrian, who is believed to be interested in a move to Roma.

The news has shocked some West Ham fans on Reddit, while others have taken the speculation with a pinch of salt.

Mario Lemina deal would round off dream summer for West Ham

The toxic cloud which loomed over the London Stadium last season has been well and truly lifted this summer by the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini and an outlandish spending spree, but things could yet get better for the Hammers supporters.

West Ham have been transformed from a club tarnished by internal problems and a fractured relationship between the supporters and the owners, to a harmonious one with plenty of optimism for the season ahead.

Pellegrini has wasted no time in stamping his own personal mark on the club by bringing in 7 new players for a combined cost of £85.5 million, but so far he has brought just one new central midfielder to the club, namely Jack Wilshere.

Wilshere’s arrival was certainly well needed considering west Ham’s glaring lack of options in central midfield last season and, with that to consider, Pellegrini should considering signing at least one more central player to bolster his options this summer.

And according to Sky Sports (via talkSPORT) that’s exactly what he is planning on doing now that Pedro Obiang is in talks with Sampdoria over a proposed £8.9 million deal.

The same report claims that Pellegrini will now target Mario Lemina as a replacement for Obiang, and if that indeed proves to be the case there’s no doubt that the Chilean would be set to complete another fantastic deal.

Southampton’s tricky defensive midfield talent arrived at the club from Juventus last summer after failing to work his way into the first-team of the Serie A giants, but he did manage to make a total of 29 appearances for the club across 2 title-winning campaigns.

The fact he was able to feature in Juventus’ first-team at all speaks volumes about the level of his potential, and he was able to showcase his ability in sporadic bursts throughout his debut season in the Premier League.

Like the rest of Southampton’s squad, Lemina lacked consistency last season, but there was enough quality on show to suggest he can thrive in English football.

With incredible technical quality, a willingness to carry the ball forward and a strong defensive shield to offer the back-four, there’s no doubt that Lemina would represent a huge upgrade on the options available to Pellegrini in that position, so he must do everything in his power to conclude a deal for the Saints’ crown jewel before the window slams shut.

Revealed: 47% of Man United fans want Jones sold to fund £65m Maguire swoop

Manchester United do not look to be especially close to any transfer dealings to bolster their squad ahead of a renewed assault on the Premier League title.

The most intense rumour surrounds a £65m bid for Harry Maguire, but reports suggest that Jose Mourinho must offload one of his current senior centre-backs before he can intensify his interest in the unlikely cult hero of England’s World Cup campaign.

That shows that United’s free-spending approach has finally caught up with them, and Louis van Gaal recruit Marcos Rojo is reportedly the man most likely to depart in order to fund Mourinho’s bid for the Leicester colossus.

However, we decided to ask United fans whether there are other defenders who should be the ones to make way and it’s clear they feel there are.

47 per cent of those we asked think that clumsy 6ft England international Phil Jones should be sold, while 42 per cent would like to see Chris Smalling depart.

Just 11 per cent think Rojo should be the man sacrificed, as shown by the damning full results below…

Arsenal won’t regret not moving for Max Meyer

Arsenal are set to miss out on transfer target Max Meyer who is in talks with Crystal Palace, according to Sky Sports.

What’s the story?

The 22-year-old is a product of the Schakle youth academy after joining the club in 2009 and he has gone on to make 145 appearances in the Bundesliga.

However, the midfielder and Schalke’s Sporting Director Christian Heidel had a very public falling-out recently with the player accusing him of bullying, and Meyer left the club at the end of the season as a free agent.

Arsenal had been linked with signing the German international but now it appears he has decided to join Crystal Palace who are confident of completing a deal, according to the report.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”273047″ player=”12034″ title=”Power Ranking the 1819 Premier League kits”]

Arsenal won’t miss him

Meyer is undoubtedly a talent but he’s not a player that Arsenal need at the moment.

He’s another technically gifted, diminutive player that epitomised the Arsene Wenger era, but which new manager Unai Emery is trying to move away from.

The new boss has added more tenacity in midfield with Lucas Torreira and Mateo Guendouzi, and even though Meyer was available on a free contract, Emery is better off putting his faith in the existing squad and new additions he has brought in.

Filip Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu would be excellent additions at forward-thinking Leicester City

According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Leicester City are closing in on the defensive additions of Filip Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu. 21-year-old Benkovic currently plays his football in his homeland with Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, while former Arsenal target Soyuncu has spent the last two years in Germany with Bundesliga outfit Freiburg.

And it appears that Claude Puel is on the verge of bringing both of them to the King Power Stadium, a double deal which, if completed before tomorrow’s 5pm deadline, would leave the future looking very bright indeed at the 2016 Premier League champions.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Foxes weren’t brilliant defensively last season in shipping 60 goals in their 38 Premier League matches. And that figure would probably have been a lot higher were it not for Harry Maguire’s efforts as well.

And with he heavily linked with a move to Manchester United after impressing at the World Cup with England, alongside the fact that Wes Morgan is 34 and Robert Huth left the club earlier in the summer, the onus was on Puel to think forward and bring a more youthful look to the Leicester backline in a bid to set them up for an extremely bright future.

Jonny Evans’ arrival, regardless of how shrewd a move it could prove to be, wasn’t necessarily a nod in that direction, but the supremely talented duo of Benkovic and Soyuncu certainly is.

21-year-old Benkovic has been earning rave reviews in Croatia in recent times in helping Dinamo Zagreb win the domestic league title twice in the last three years, with the centre back possessing the capabilities both on and indeed off the ball to suggest that he could be a big hit in the Premier League.

And 22-year-old Soyuncu is another who has made great strides in the last few years at German outfit Freiburg, appearing 50 times for the Bundesliga club since his move there back in 2016, with his exploits earning him 14 successive appearances in the Turkish national team – there’s a reason Arsenal were keen on him earlier in the window.

Thus, it’s seems pretty clear that both Benkovic and Soyuncu have extremely bright futures ahead of them in the game, and that is sure to come as music to the ears of Foxes supporters who have seen their title-winning stalwarts Morgan and Huth somewhat struggle in the twilight of their careers.

And even were Leicester to lose Maguire before the 5pm deadline on Thursday, securing a double deal for the hugely talented Benkovic and Soyuncu would still leave the future looking extremely bright at the Midlands outfit.
