Bull: Wolves shouldn’t sign transfer target Goncalo Guedes

Steve Bull doesn’t think Wolves need to add wingers this summer, amid reports linking them with Valencia’s Goncalo Guedes.

Wolves have been offered the Portuguese attacker, who said he idolises international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, but already have a strong contingent in the wide areas.

However, with Pedro Neto out with a long-term knee problem, and Adama Traore’s future currently up in the air, the Midlands outfit could be left short.

Meanwhile, another of their attackers, Willian Jose, is likely to return to Real Sociedad following his struggling loan spell, whilst Raul Jimenez is going to need time before he’s back to his best after his head injury.

Guedes, who’s been with Valencia for four seasons, one of which was a one-year loan, can play anywhere across the front three, but has only managed 21 goals in his time in Spain, with his best La Liga return only five.

This season, he contributed 14 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions, including two against Europa League winners Villarreal, and is valued at £22.50m by Transfermarkt, which is considerably less than what Valencia paid PSG back in 2018.

But Bull exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Wolves should be looking elsewhere:

“We’ve got the wingers – two each side, so I don’t think so. He would be a good asset to the side, but he might not get games.

“We need to strengthen in most areas apart from wingers because when Neto comes back, Podence comes back, we keep Traore, fingers crossed, we have enough options.”

What does England captain Leah Williamson's ACL injury mean for the Lionesses' Women's World Cup dream?

How will the European champions fare this summer after losing their skipper just three months before the tournament begins?

When England captain and Arsenal star Leah Williamson went down with a knee injury on Wednesday night, one could be forgiven for fearing the worst.

Women’s football has been suffering an ACL crisis for a long, long time now and, on Friday afternoon, Williamson’s name was added to its ever-growing list of casualties.

The 26-year-old will miss the rest of Arsenal’s season, which includes a Women’s Champions League semi-final tie against Wolfsburg, and then, crucially, this summer’s 2023 Women’s World Cup.

After leading the Lionesses to Euro 2022 glory last year, she’ll be forced to watch on from afar for this major tournament.

It’s cruel, cruel news for a player who had been enjoying an incredible moment in her career, with so much to look forward to. It’s devastating for her club, too, with the Gunners already bogged down by a long injury list.

And what about England? To lose your captain and one of your star players as you prepare for a World Cup that you genuinely have the ability to win is a massive blow.

    The Lionesses' leader

One impact Williamson’s absence will have on this team is obvious, evidenced by the armband that she sports every time she steps on the pitch for her country.

She’s the captain, she’s this team’s leader, and now they will be without her for the biggest tournament of them all.

When the Arsenal star was officially made England’s new skipper last year, it was something that her team-mates commented on as being a “natural” thing, such are the leadership qualities she possesses.

It’s something Wiegman clearly saw, too, as when Williamson had asked her if she wanted her to do anything more in the new role, the coach simply said: “No, I've given it to you. I'm happy with what you're doing.”

She showed throughout Euro 2022 that Wiegman made the correct decision, too. When Williamson sat with her to talk to the media ahead of the final at Wembley in late July, she oozes calmness and composure. She was laser-focused on the task ahead and, a day later, she went out and led her team to glory.

To go to a World Cup without a player that has traits like that, a player that so many of her team-mates look to in big moments, is huge.

The formidable duo of Bright and Williamson

One of the most difficult things for England about Williamson's absence is that they lose the fantastic partnership she and Millie Bright have forged in the heart of the defence.

The duo started every game at Euro 2022 and were a big reason why the Lionesses only conceded twice throughout the entire tournament, both exceptional in their own ways and able to complement the other.

Recently, when that pair has been broken up, England haven’t looked as assured. During the April international break, Bright was injured and so Williamson partnered with Alex Greenwood for the Women’s Finalissima and then Esme Morgan for the Australia friendly.

The Lionesses weren’t at their best at the back in that first game, conceding late on before beating Brazil on penalties, and the second match resulted in England’s first defeat of Wiegman’s tenure.

Before the Euros, until it was changed at the last minute, Williamson was actually playing in midfield and it was Bright and Greenwood that had come together to form a great centre-back duo.

If Bright is fit for the tournament, as she's still sidelined with a knee injury at present, Wiegman will hope those two can reproduce that quality and rekindle their fruitful partnership in the pre-World Cup friendlies.

  • Getty

    Reshuffle needed

One of Wiegman’s big selection headaches during her tenure has been the left-back spot. In February, it seemed she had found a solution: Greenwood.

The Manchester City defender used to play in that position week in, week out before moving into a central role in recent years. Yet, the coach played her on the left during the Arnold Clark Cup and she fared well, seemingly relieving the headache.

In Bright’s absence, Greenwood played at centre-back in April and now Williamson’s injury is likely to see her play there at the World Cup, too. Wiegman needs to shuffle things around again.

Rachel Daly played at left-back during the Euros but she’s naturally a forward, second in the scoring charts in the Women’s Super League this season. As a result of that form, she’s been given more minutes in the front line for her country lately and has done well there.

The injury to Williamson could see Wiegman move Daly back into defence, though, and bring in another forward to bolster the attacking pool. Alternatively, Jess Carter, who started both games in the position in April, could play there. Neither are naturals in the role, though, and therefore cannot really perform to their full potential there.

Could Greenwood stay on the left and another centre-back option be brought in alongside Bright? It is now probably the biggest question Wiegman has to ponder going into the World Cup.

A loss in more than one position

England don’t only lose a top quality centre-back in Williamson, though. The Arsenal star is a versatile player who has also excelled in a midfield role for club and country.

It’s in that area that the Lionesses are thinnest on the ground and simply by being in squads, their captain has been able to add a little bit of depth to the middle of the park should she be needed.

There is one player in the England team that is almost irreplaceable and that is Keira Walsh. The Barcelona midfielder is one of a kind and plays an incredibly important role for her country.

But the player best suited to replacing her, should she pick up a knock at the World Cup or miss a game through suspension, was probably Williamson.

Man Utd linked with Samuel Chukwueze

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to CaughtOffside, the Red Devils are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in acquiring the 22-year-old’s signature over the summer.

The report also reveals that Chukwueze has a release clause of £69 million and that Liverpool and Chelsea are among his potential suitors.

Woodward must avoid

Chukwueze has impressed since joining the Yellow Submarines back in 2017, making 119 appearances for the La Liga outfit during his time with the club.

The Nigeria international’s dazzling displays earned praise from fellow African footballing star Samuel Eto’o last year, who lauded the 22-year-old’s talent and potential before adding that an improvement to his end product is required.

“He is an incredible player who is growing in leaps and bounds,” claimed Eto’o.

“He is a quality player and he needs to score more goals, but he has the quality and ability to be more than just a goal-scoring forward. Once he gets all of that he will be top.”

However, in the 12 months since the former Barcelona and Inter striker outlined where Chukwueze needs to improve his game, there has been little evidence of progress.

In 2019/20, the £18 million rated attacker (as per Transfermarkt) bagged four goals and provided six assists in all competitions. In the recently concluded campaign, he boosted those numbers only marginally to five goals and eight assists.

While Chukwueze is certainly a talented player with plenty of room to grow, it’s questionable whether he’s at the level that United currently need in order to close the gap to newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City, his goal and assist tallies suggest that he isn’t.

The Old Trafford outfit finished 12 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men in 2020/21 and were dumped out of the Champions League in the group stages, indicating significant progress is still required until they’ll be able to challenge for football’s greatest honours.

With Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho reportedly available for £75m this summer – just £6m more than the Chukwueze’s release clause – Ed Woodward would be making a huge mistake in prioritising the Villarreal man’s signature ahead of Sancho’s.

It’s highly unlikely that United can afford both right-wingers, or that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can find room for both men in his first-team squad, and therefore, Sancho must be the focus rather than Chukwueze.

And, in other words…James Cooper drops huge Man Utd transfer claim that’ll surely have fans buzzing

15 fun facts about Allan Saint-Maximin

Everything you need to know about Newcastle United maverick Allan Saint-Maximin!

Allan Saint-Maximin is a French professional footballer who currently plays as a winger for Newcastle United in the Premier League. He was born on March 12, 1997, in Châtenay-Malabry, France.

Saint-Maximin began his football career at the age of six with local club Les Ulis. He then joined the youth ranks at Saint-Etienne in 2013, where he developed his skills and caught the attention of scouts from across Europe. After making just one first-team appearance for the French outfit, he was snapped up by Monaco in 2015.

However, they loaned him out immediately to gain regular first-team football, first to Hannover 96 for whom he featured in 18 games, scoring once, in a relegation campaign. Then on to then-Ligue 1 outfit SC Bastia, where he made 36 appearances and scored three times but they were relegated anyway.

He returned to Monaco, who had just won the league title, so regular minutes were difficult to come by, and he only played two games before being sold to OGC Nice.

Here he played under Lucien Favre for a season, and then Patrick Vieira, finishing seventh and eighth.

His speed and direct play attracted Newcastle, and they bought him for a reported fee of £16.5m in August 2019.

The 26-year-old has made a strong impression at St. James' Park, quickly becoming a fan favourite thanks to his fearless dribbling and natural flair. He went on to make 26 appearances in his debut season, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

Since then, he continued to be a key player for the club, helping the Magpies stave off relegation in the last two seasons before playing a vital role in their climb up the table in recent times as Eddie Howe's men recently reached their first cup final in 22 years and remain in contention for a place in the Champions League this season.

What are the 15 things you absolutely need to know about the Newcastle trickster?

  • Street football running in his veins!

Neither of Saint-Maximin's parents were involved in the game. He was raised in a reasonably affluent family, and didn't have financial troubles in his formative years. His mother was the director of education at a renowned school in the Paris outskirts. Meanwhile, his father worked as an office administrator at Paris Diderot University.

Athletics arrived first among all sporting alternatives for the youngster, thanks to his innate passion for running and explosive activities. Later, he transferred his athletic abilities to football and started playing alongside his elder brother, Kurtys, who at the time aspired to be a footballer.

He used to play with boys his brother's age, and developed a reputation in street football.

The largely uncoached freestyler was luckily offered trials with Verrieres-le-Buisson, from where his professional journey began.

Friends with Hatem Ben Arfa 🤝

It’s easy to see the similarities between Saint-Maximin and Hatem Ben Arfa. They’re both French, terrific dribblers, a nightmare for defenders and fan favourites at St James’ Park.

When Ben Arfa was at his best, he was unstoppable. His time in the North-East ended on a sour note, but Newcastle streets will never forget him, or his spectacular solo goals.

Indeed, the French duo happen to be friends. What's more, before joining Newcastle, Saint-Maximin rang his compatriot for advice.

“I remember Hatem Ben Arfa played here,” he told the Telegraph. “He told me to sign. He is a good friend, we grew up in the same area. He had some of his best days at Newcastle and wished he had stayed longer."

Saint-Maximin has acknowledged Ben Arfa is a player he looks up to for the latter's dribbling ability.

“For dribbling, I love Hatem so much,” said Saint-Maximin. “I love a lot of players, but, for me, it’s Ben Arfa. He scored a lot of good goals.

"He had an injury one time, and maybe this was a bit difficult for him, but everybody knows he’s a great player.”

  • Could've signed for Arsenal 🖋️

What if we told you that Saint-Maximin could easily have been plying his trade for Arsenal had things turned out differently for him in the past?

The Gunners have been one of the most consistent suitors of the Frenchman, who grew up idolising Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. However, for his development, regular gametime was of paramount importance, as he turned down interest from the north London club not once, but twice.

First was when he left Monaco to join Nice. There were also reports in the media that Saint-Maximin had been a transfer target for Arsenal during the summer of 2019. However, the French winger ultimately opted to sign for Newcastle, who were ready to give him a prominent role in their project moving forwards.

He's absolutely loving life in the North-East, and is well-adored by a passionate set of supporters, with the club back on the rise since the Saudi-led takeover.

  • Gives back to Newcastle community

From his appearance and fashion focus, one may assume he's a flashy and egoist personality, but you'd be wrong. Saint-Maximin is a smart and humble guy who knows what he's doing, which is putting others before himself.

He arrived at Tyneside with reports stating he's a spectacular talent, but with a bad attitude. However, the Magpies faithful have discovered it to be otherwise.

His parents and teachers instilled in him all of the principles of generosity he needed to stay grounded despite his riches. From being a regular contributor of the NUFC Foodbank to making significant donations during COVID-19 to taking 100s of young Newcastle fans to a toy shop and buying them a toy of their wish, he gives a lot back to the Newcastle community.

Needless to say, he shares a special relationship with Toon faithful, and is hero-worshipped by many of them.

Explained: Five ‘favours’ Barcelona are accused of receiving in Negreira scandal

Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira was reportedly asked to carry out five separate tasks in return for Barcelona's regular payments.

With the so-called Negreira case ongoing, further allegations have been brought before Barcelona. Although a report concluded that there was no link between the club's over €7.3 million payments and on-field refereeing decisions, the club are not out of the woods yet.

Indeed, as reported, the sum that Barcelona paid is well beyond that of the fee likely required to obtain referee scouting reports — which Barcelona insist was the basis of their deal.

The state-appointed prosecutor's official document highlighted some of the favours Barcelona could have received as part of their confidential verbal agreement with refereeing official Enriquez Negreira. However, there are five things that Negreira conceded he did in return for Barcelona's money.

  • Rigging of competition committee judges

The club requested that certain judges were picked for Spain's "competition committee." The board dictates punishment for player sanctions, and can have an influence in adjusting fixture times.

Negreira pointed out that the Blaugrana could, for example, request that fewer "Madridistas" are on the board, thus giving the club more favourable decisions at the administrative level.

  • Setting up a negotiator with the Spanish football federation

The club reportedly asked Negreira to set up a club representative to the Spanish football federation to assist the relationship between the two parties.

Such an individual would also keep the club in the loop about any potential disagreements at the administrative level.

  • Advanced warning RFEF or CTA visit

Negreira was asked to notify the club whenever a representative from the football federation or refereeing committee was to be set up.

This would Barcelona a theoretical advantage in maintaining a good relationship with the league and its referees.

The perfect 10: Totti's greatest goals

GOAL celebrates the King of Rome's 46th birthday by showcasing the most significant strikes of his storied career.

Few players spend their entire careers at one club. Fewer still manage to spend 24 years at the highest level. Francesco Totti did both. Simply because he was no ordinary player.

He was a genuine phenomenon, 'The Golden Boy' who became 'The Eighth King of Rome'.

Totti made his Roma debut at just 16 years of age. By the time he retired in 2017, he had scored 307 goals in all competitions for his hometown club. He also netted nine times for Italy, whom he helped win the 2006 World Cup.

Below, GOAL runs through his most significant strikes, from the crucial efforts that decided games to the sublime demonstrations of skill that took our breath away…

Enjoy!

    10A high-pressure penalty

There had been considerable concern over whether Totti would even make it to the 2006 World Cup, having suffered a broken ankle just three months before the tournament kicked off.

However, despite the forward's lack of game time, Marcello Lippi was never in any doubt about reserving a place in his squad for the No.10. The coach's faith in Totti was fully vindicated.

Indeed, while there may have been plates and screws in his ankle that had been yet to be removed, he still contributed four assists during Italy's triumphant campaign.

Totti also scored one crucial goal, showing nerves of still to convert a penalty five minutes into injury time of Italy's last-16 clash with Australia to send his country through to the quarter-finals.

    9Stunning the Santiago Bernabeu

Real Madrid spent years trying to convince Totti to move to the Spanish capital, and it was easy to understand why.

He had, after all, masterminded Roma's first ever victory at the Santiago Bernabeu, in the first group stage of the 2002-03 Champions League.

After Candela had pounced on a loose ball inside his own half, Totti surged forward before waiting until the right moment to release his full-back, who had continued on running down the left flank.

Candela reached by by-line after dummying one defender and then produced the perfect cut-back for the supporting Totti, who swept the ball home and ran off celebrating with his shirt pulled over his head.

    8Totti humbles Hart

On September 30, 2014, Totti became the oldest goalscorer in Champions League history – and he did it in fitting fashion.

Midway through the first half of a group-stage clash with Manchester City, and Roma trailing to an early penalty from Sergio Aguero, Radja Nainggolan put his captain in on goal.

Joe Hart came rushing out to narrow the angle but Totti being Totti, he simply dinked the ball over the English goalkeeper to level the game.

The Italian, who was 38 at the time, then broke his own record just a few weeks later when he struck in a 1-1 draw at CSKA Moscow.

    7'I have purged you again'

Totti just didn't score memorable goals, he also produced iconic celebrations. Certainly, Roma fans will forever remember the way in which he marked his late goal in a 3-1 win over Lazio in April 1999.

Totti was still only 22 but he had already become the scourge of Roma's city rivals, so when he sealed a derby win for his side with a thumping finish, he revealed a tee-shirt which famously read, "I have purged you again."

Liverpool winners, losers and ratings as Nunez sees red and Diaz rescues Klopp's side

The Uruguayan's moment of madness cost his side dearly as their slow start to the season continued against Crystal Palace at Anfield

Darwin Nunez was sent off on his first Premier League start as Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace at Anfield.

The Uruguayan was shown a straight red card after shoving his head into Joachim Andersen, the Palace defender, following a clash 12 minutes into the second half.

Liverpool trailed 1-0 at the time, Wilfried Zaha having given the visitors the lead with a clinical finish from Eberechi Eze’s superb pass after 32 minutes.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side rallied with 10 men and levelled when Luis Diaz cut inside to lash an unstoppable 25-yard strike home in front of the Kop.

Liverpool pushed for a winner, but it was Palace who came closest when Zaha hit the post sliding in to meet Odsonne Edouard’s cross.

The result means Klopp’s men have now failed to win their first two games of the campaign for the first time since 2012-13, and they head to Old Trafford next to face Manchester United.

  • Getty Images

    The Winners

    Luis Diaz

Talk about stepping up in the hour of need. Liverpool were in danger of collapsing completely, 1-0 down and reduced to 10 men after Nunez’s moment of madness. How would they respond?

The answer was provided by Diaz, who collected the ball on the left and danced his way between three Palace defenders, then cut inside another before smashing a quite brilliant 25-yard strike past Vicente Guaita.

It was a moment of pure brilliance from the Colombian, and it ignited the crowd, who had been stunned by Nunez’s dismissal and their side’s low-key start to the second half. Diaz is a winner, and his attitude makes him an ideal player for this Liverpool side.

They needed all of his spirit and belief here.

    Eberechi Eze

The best player on the field was wearing white. Eze put in an outstanding display as Palace left with a point and nearly headed home with three.

His slide-rule pass created the Eagles' goal for Zaha, and his ability to evade challenges allowed him to glide through midfield and threaten Liverpool's backline throughout.

Having seen last season ruined by injury, this is a big campaign for the 24-year-old, and he looks ready to seize his opportunity.

    Liverpool’s medical department

Well, at least they’ll be getting paid plenty of overtime at the moment. We can add Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino to a lengthening absentee list, and Joe Gomez wasn’t deemed fit enough to start the game either.

A boost is badly needed, whether from Matip or Firmino, Diogo Jota or Ibrahima Konate or Thiago Alcantara.

At least they have a full week before their next game, against Manchester United.

  • Getty Images

    The Losers

    Darwin Nunez

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. What was the Uruguayan thinking?

With Liverpool 1-0 down, Anfield edgy and cool heads needed, Nunez did exactly what his side didn’t need him to do. He reacted to a bit of provocation from Joachim Andersen and left the Palace defender in a heap.

Paul Tierney had no hesitation in showing the red card, and Nunez had to be escorted from the field by James Milner.

It cost his side here, and it will cost them in the coming weeks. There will be no Nunez at Old Trafford next week, nor against Bournemouth or Newcastle after that. With resources already stretched, Klopp could well have done without a moment of sheer stupidity from his new big-money centre-forward.

    Hopes for a title race

Two games in, four points dropped. It feels almost absurd to say, but that looks a long way back, given the standards set at the top of the Premier League in recent years. More worrying, however, is the fact that Liverpool don’t look anything like the team we’ve become so used to seeing, and the fact their injury list is longer than any other side in the league. Without the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate, they are a far weaker proposition – and Manchester City will be delighted by what they’ve seen so far.

    Joe Gomez

How’s your luck? Having waited so long for an opportunity to play centre-back in the Premier League, Gomez’s chance looked to have arrived when both Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip were struck down with ill-timed injuries.

But a training-ground knock meant Gomez was deemed fit enough only for the bench, and Nat Phillips got the nod instead.

Costly for the England international, and for Liverpool too perhaps. A fit Gomez would certainly have been more useful against Palace’s counter-attacking threat, as he showed after replacing Phillips in the second half here.

    Liverpool Ratings: Defence

    Alisson Becker (6/10):

Well beaten by Zaha for the goal, but denied the same player soon after. Solid after the break.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (6/10):

Crisp and incisive with his passing, and carried the fight to Palace with his side down to 10 men, albeit without success.

    Andy Robertson (5/10):

Unable to make his usual impact and was replaced early by Tsimikas.

    Nat Phillips (5/10):

Making his first Premier League start since May 2021, he was confident and front-footed but undone by a perfectly-timed Eze pass and Zaha run for Palace’s opener. His passing was a bit too predictable.

    Virgil van Dijk (6/10):

Caught a little square for the Palace goal, and mis-kicked a good chance right before half time. Some lovely passes but always kept busy by Zaha.

Blades should be considering Jokanovic

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Sheffield United striker Brian Deane believes his old side should be considering Slavisa Jokanovic for the job in the Bramall Lane dugout.

In their search to replace Chris Wilder, Sheffield United have narrowed down their shortlist to five names, but Jokanovic, 52, is not thought to be included despite being linked to the role.

Current caretaker manager Paul Heckingbottom, however, is one name that is currently being considered.

Deane, though, thinks overlooking the former Fulham and Watford boss could be a mistake.

When asked by FFC if Sheffield United have missed a trick by not considering someone who has won Premier League promotion before, the retired Premier League footballer said:

“Yeah, possibly. I think that they needed to react before they have done because it’s like the club is just drifting now.

“I just hope they’ve got a plan in place, to be honest, but there just seems to be a lack of direction right now.”

Given that Jokanovic has taken both Fulham and Watford from the Championship to the Premier League in the past, he certainly looked like a safe bet for Sheffield United.

It seems, however, that the Blades want to go down another route in their quest to make a quick return to English football’s top division.

Pundit says West Ham should sign Abraham

Former Premier League striker Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that Tammy Abraham would be a great signing for West Ham.

Abraham has slipped down the pecking order at Chelsea following the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, starting just two Premier League games since January, and was hauled off at half-time in both of those against Burnley and Southampton.

Despite his lack of opportunities, the striker is still Chelsea’s top scorer having netted 12 times in all competitions, but his Stamford Bridge career appears to be drawing to a close.

Meanwhile, West Ham desperately need to bolster their striking options following the January departure of Sebastien Haller and ongoing injuries to Michail Antonio, leaving them with just one first-team frontman.

West Ham are reportedly keen on Abraham, who’s considering his Chelsea future after being left out of their squad for last Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City.

And Windass believes that should Abraham make the move across London, it would be a good deal for both parties.

He told Football FanCast:

“I think that’s a great fit. West Ham have always had a Carlton Cole, tall, aggressive number nine. You wouldn’t write that off because Antonio has always struggled with his hamstring problems.

“Tammy Abraham has had his nose pushed out at Chelsea, you can see that happening.

“And West Ham fans would be delighted if they got someone like Tammy Abraham to replace Antonio.”
