Doughty Danny Lamb, Tom Bailey make Nottinghamshire battle for vital victory

Ninth-wicket pair summon 118-run resistance to give Lancashire belief on gripping afternoon

Paul Edwards08-Sep-2021
When he was looking forward to this day with a dollop of optimism which, as things turned out, was rather misplaced, a Lancashire cricketer pointed out that Nottinghamshire possessed only three front-line seamers. Fair point, perhaps, but one wonders what that player thought at just gone 5.15 when Saqib Mahmood fended a shortish ball from Brett Hutton into the hands of Ben Slater at short leg to clinch a wonderful victory and all but one of the visitors’ second-innings wickets had been taken by that trio.Steven Mullaney will have a different perspective on matters this evening. The Nottinghamshire skipper probably knows that when you have three fast-medium bowlers of the quality of Hutton, Luke Fletcher and Dane Paterson, a fourth quickie would be under-employed. The three he currently rotates have taken his side to the top of the Division One table by 10.5 points and in 16 days’ time they may help take his team to the title. Paterson’s four wickets have earned him most plaudits but the three will hunt as a pack until after the equinox. There are, though, two fascinating rounds of Championship cricket to be played before anything is known and this final day gave us some glorious portents as to the intensity those six Division One matches will probably contain. Only 11.5 overs remained when Mahmood was dismissed and that was testament to an extraordinary Lancastrian rearguard that threatened to secure a draw from an utterly unpromising situation. When Tom Bailey joined Danny Lamb just before 2.30 on this final afternoon Lancashire were 210 for 8 and had just lost three wickets in ten balls. Spectators were considering other plans for the evening. What happened next will be recorded with honour and regret in the Old Trafford Yearbook.Bailey and Lamb defied Mullaney’s attack for the next 30.1 overs with a quite remarkable display of defensive defiance. Both players reached their fifties and their stand of 108 set a new ninth-wicket record for their county in matches against Nottinghamshire beating the 112-year-old mark of 87 set by Bill Huddleston and Harry Dean at Old Trafford in 1909. Then, somewhere near the point when visiting supporters were venturing onto the quicksand of hope Bailey lost his middle stump to a ball from Paterson that tailed in and kept devilishly low. Seven overs later Hutton was racing madly towards Bridgford Road after taking the final wicket and a great game was done.As for Lancashire, they were overpowered in many sessions of this match and there is no shame in them admitting the fact. But they are not yet out of the hunt for the title. No county is, although it would require a general collapse of Foinavon proportions to see Somerset winning the pennant. Dane Vilas’ batsmen lasted until well after the arrival of the scones and they remain a tough bunch. It is quite possible to see them beating Somerset at Taunton and Hampshire at Aigburth while other, more obvious contenders scrap amongst themselves.Related

This, though, was Nottinghamshire’s day and Nottinghamshire’s match. Its centrepiece was probably the spell of ten deliveries with the new ball in which Fletcher bowled Rob Jones off the inside edge for 33 and trapped George Lavelle leg before for nought, dismissals which sandwiched Steven Croft’s departure, caught at slip by Ben Duckett off Paterson for 6. At the beginning of that brief disintegration Lancashire were 210 for 5 and their chances of survival were slim; at its conclusion people were checking train times. They will have missed the early departures. This became a far closer affair than most envisaged.Just before lunch Fletcher had taken a painful blow on the foot from a George Balderson drive and his collapse had been vaguely reminiscent of the demolition of a 1960s tower block. But just before two o’clock here he was, rumbling in like a truck down the Mansfield Road, and by the end of the match, the country’s most successful bowler had 59 wickets against his name. There would be few more popular title winners.Fletcher had also been rumbling in at half-past ten to open a first session that nailed down the coffin on any notions that Lancashire might mount a glorious pursuit of the 444 runs they needed to win. Instead, the loss of three wickets for 55 runs in 30 overs prepared us for a gloriously tense afternoon.Nottinghamshire’s hopes were emboldened in the fourth over of the morning when Paterson angled one across Wells whose tentative defensive push merely edged a catch to the diving Tom Moores. Then, having cover-driven Fletcher for a fine boundary, Josh Bohannon remained runless for 20 balls, the last of which saw him leg before to Paterson for 8 when trying to work the ball away square rather than play down its line towards mid-on. Paterson’s celebrations reflected the value opponents currently place on Bohannon’s wicket but Vilas’s scalp is important, too, and that was taken by Hutton with nothing more than a fast straight delivery which somehow caused the Lancashire skipper to overbalance as he sought to play to leg. The ball thudded into his pad and Nick Cook wasted little time confirming the obvious. There should have been further celebrations in the Fox Road Stand four balls into the following over when Balderson drove the ball firmly back to Liam Patterson-White but the bowler could not cling on to the two-handed chance. Encouraged by this reprieve, the 20-year-old dug in with Jones for the 40 minutes until lunch and his most violent stroke was that straight drive that caught Fletcher on the foot.Ten overs into the afternoon session Nottinghamshire took the vital wicket of Balderson for 77 when Patterson-White bowled a rare long hop and the batsman, as though momentarily excused watchfulness, whacked it to square leg where Paterson dived to his right to take a superb catch. Having batted for 314 minutes and faced 235 balls, most of them on the spot, Balderson had fallen to a fairly rank delivery. But he had acquitted himself with honour and his stock will have risen in the Old Trafford dressing room. It will have risen at Trent Bridge, too, for this was a noble game of cricket and an honourably contested one.

'A great competitor and a real good bloke'

The cricket world pays tribute to former South Africa captain and Nottinghamshire allrounder Clive Rice, who died in Cape Town at the age of 66

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jul-2015″Clive Rice was a giant of the game, not just in South Africa, but across the cricketing world. Though his international appearances for the Proteas were limited to just three ODIs, Clive was a hugely inspirational figure for those of us who had the privilege to represent our country.”
“Clive will always be remembered for captaining the Proteas on our historic first tour to India in 1991 and, as one of the great all-rounders and captains of the game.”
“Whether it be Test cricket, whether it be one-day cricket, I can sit here and comfortably say that he would have competed with the best.”
Radio Sport”Such a caring person. That’s the kind of stuff I’ll always remember, how caring he was. Yes, the cricket is one thing but I moved to England as a young little kid of 19, 20 years of age with no family, no friends. But he would invite me to his house all the time for dinner and we’d just sit in the lounge and talk about anything and everything”
EWN Sport”Clive was a fighter like you can’t believe and he proved that on the cricket field and he’s proved it over the past few months. He’s just got a heart the size of Africa. He’s a remarkable man.”

“The idea of working with someone like Ricey, who was such a legend, was one of the big reasons why I wanted to come and play at Trent Bridge. He was an incredibly strong man who didn’t tolerate fools easily and he demanded the best out of you every day.”

Johnson's butterfingers

Plays of the day from the match between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab in Chennai

George Binoy25-Apr-2015The failed footwork
Brendon McCullum charged at Anureet Singh’s first delivery and aimed for six over long-off. He hit it high, but not far. Mitchell Johnson was pedaling back from mid-off, trying to get under the catch. He got into an awkward side-on position as the ball dropped into his hands, before popping out again. The rebound was too far away for Johnson to get to it with his hands, and so he flicked his foot out to try and pop the ball up for another go. He made contact with his boot, but the ball lobbed and fell out of his reach. Johnson later dropped a more straightforward chance off Suresh Raina at deep square leg.The improvisation
McCullum had premeditated to play the scoop down leg side against Sandeep Sharma and so he moved across his stumps and squared up his stance. Sharma, however, bowled full outside off stump, not giving McCullum the line he wanted. He improvised. McCullum’s body remained positioned for the scoop down leg but he now opened the face of his bat towards point and shoveled the ball past the wicketkeeper to the third-man boundary. The lapses
Some of Kings XI’s senior players were an embarrassment in the field. Virender Sehwag charged in from short third man to attack a ball that was coming at him off Raina’s outside edge. He ran at it without anticipating the ball would spin away from him and then looked silly as it eluded him comfortably. He turned slowly and gave chase but it was in vain. Later in the piece, Shaun Marsh was slow in bending down to his right at point and let a cut shot from Ravindra Jadeja speed to the boundary. The catch
Suresh Raina’s catch to dismiss David Miller was everything Kings XI’s fielding wasn’t. Stationed at leg slip, Raina saw Miller shaping to leg glance Ravindra Jadeja and moved a couple of steps to his left just in case. Sure enough, Miller glanced and the ball flew flow and fast towards Raina. Had he not moved, the ball would have passed by his right hand, but now all he had to do was stoop low and grab the ball inches from the turf.

    WHAT NEXT FOR GUARDIOLA?

For now, Guardiola's focus will be on City and their aspirations for the 2024-25 season. Next up is a trip to Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Birmingham now eyeing "superb" manager who says he learned from Rooney

After parting ways with Gary Rowett after an unsuccessful interim period in charge, Birmingham City have reportedly added a fresh face to their managerial shortlist in case Tony Mowbray does not take the reigns next season.

Birmingham manager news

Birmingham's season ultimately ended in Championship relegation in what represents a disaster considering where they found themselves earlier in the campaign. Under John Eustace, they were on course to compete for a place in the play-offs, but opted to hire Wayne Rooney nonetheless in a decision they quickly regretted.

Then turning to Mowbray after Rooney's disaster, the former Sunderland boss was forced to make way for Rowett, so the Blues find themselves back at square one.

Left in search of a new manager, Birmingham have already been linked with the likes of former boss Steve Bruce, who has more than enough experience to guide them back to the Championship at the first time of asking. But now it seems as though the club are aiming for a younger candidate.

Report: Birmingham hierarchy have changed their mind about Rowett’s future

A twist has emerged from what club chiefs were initially hoping for.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Birmingham have shortlisted Liam Rosenior for their managerial role following his shock departure from Hull City. Rosenior was nominated for the Championship's Manager of Season award but, ultimately, his failure to secure a place in the play-offs led to Hull's decision to sack him much to the surprise of many.

The 39-year-old would have to get off to a quick start at St Andrew's to avoid any Rooney comparisons, however, especially after claiming to have learned from the Manchester United legend during their time in the Derby County dugout together.

Rosenior told Derby's official website: “Wayne is intelligent with people. He cares about them as well and he has been able to show that side to him in such a difficult time.

"He doesn’t change when he’s doing a press conference, when he is doing a team talk or when he is addressing the staff in terms of a tough moment when the club went into administration. I have learnt so much from Wayne in terms of how he has dealt with the pressure of the situation we are in.”

Birmingham must act swiftly to land "superb" Rosenior

The surprise over Hull's decision to part ways with Rosenior paints the picture of the job he was doing for the Tigers, which very nearly led them into the Championship's top six. Sacked nonetheless, Birmingham can now take full advantage to land the type of young manager they believed they were getting when Rooney arrived.

It was during his time at Hull that Rosenior earned plenty of praise, including from former player and Arsenal legend Ray Parlour, who heaped praise on the former full back: "Liam Rosenior is doing a superb job at Hull.

"I actually think he is underrated as a coach – he is certainly getting the best out of the players. You could see last season the players believed in him, but this season they have shown more consistency and quality, and they are now right in the mix to get a play-off spot at the end of this season."

Shock as £240k-p/w Man Utd star not on Ratcliffe’s untouchable players list

A shock update has emerged regarding one of Manchester United's star players, with no guarantee that he will definitely stay put this summer.

Man Utd transfer & exit news

The Red Devils want to sign players all over the pitch in the summer transfer window, with former midfield target Frenkie de Jong again reportedly being eyed up. With the past-his-best Casemiro widely expected to leave once the campaign reaches its conclusion, the Dutchman is seen as a great option to come in as a younger upgrade.

Centre-back also has to be seen as an area of focus, and United appear to be looking at candidates to be Lisandro Martinez's long-term partner at the heart of the defence. Premier League pair Jarrad Branthwaite and Marc Guehi both jump out as strong targets for Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the summer, with the duo potentially battling each other for a place in England's Euro 2024 squad.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma is seen as another possible option for United, although whether he comes in for Marcus Rashford remains to be seen, with only a huge bid for their current star likely to be accepted, should he want a new challenge.

It is a summer that could see a host of Red Devils players leave, as Ratcliffe flexes his muscles, with Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood among those who reportedly have no future at the club.

Shock Man Utd transfer update

According to a report from The Telegraph [via a report from Spain], Bruno Fernandes isn't on Ratcliffe list of untouchable players at Manchester United this summer.

The only three individuals named as players who unequivocally won't be sold at the end of the season are Rasmund Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, all of whom are seen as youngsters with big futures at Old Trafford.

It certainly comes as a shock that Bruno isn't on the untouchable list, considering he has clearly been United's best and most consistent player since arriving at the club back in 2020. Admittedly, the £240,000-a-week Portuguese does turn 30 years of age later this year, so Ratcliffe may not see him as a significant part of the long-term picture, but he still has so much to offer, especially as he is so rarely injured, starting 33 Premier League matches this season.

Fernandes deserves to join Hojlund, Garnacho and Mainoo on the list, considering he has racked up a tally of 143 goal contributions (79 goals and 64 assists) in 230 appearances for United, while Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes has sung his praises: "I think his vision is brilliant. He’s not afraid to lose the ball, we all say at United, you have to be prepared to take risks, he’s prepared to do that, and we all know the ability he’s got."

Lionesses star Keira Walsh keen on WSL return as Arsenal and Chelsea circle – but any deal with Barcelona before transfer deadline day will be difficult

  • Walsh into final year of Barcelona contract
  • Lionesses star wants WSL return
  • Arsenal and Chelsea could offer that
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Walsh is into the final year of the contract that she signed at Barcelona in the summer of 2022, when the club made her the most expensive player in women's football history at the time. As a result, there has been speculation around her future throughout this summer and that is only continuing as Friday's transfer deadline for the Women's Super League approaches.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The England star has been superb for Barcelona since joining the club, helping them to win another Champions League title earlier this year. She is a crucial player in midfield and so to sell her at any point would leave the Catalans light in the middle of the park, but especially now, with so little time to find a replacement for her before the transfer window closes.

  • WHAT THE REPORT SAID

As such, Barca do not want to let Walsh go, despite knowing that the player will not renew her expiring contract in the next 12 months. That's according to , with journalist Emma Sanders providing an update on the Lionesses star on Thursday.

"Keira Walsh has a year remaining on her contract at Barcelona and has already informed the club she does not intend to extend because she is keen to return home for personal reasons," the report says. "That means Barca will either lose her on a free in 12 months' time or they could cash in on her this summer with several clubs interested.

"Arsenal have a longstanding interest, while Chelsea are in the market for a midfielder and would have the funds. The problem is that Barcelona do not want to sell. They are not prepared to name a price – though there's a general consensus that it would have to be a world-record fee should they consider any offer. We're at a bit of a stand-off, basically."

Indeed, it is believed sporting director Edu has set his sights on a new striker, centre-midfielder and winger. Arsenal are currently lacking that prolific 20-plus goals-per-season number nine, with just Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah standing out as their only senor options there, with makeshift option Kai Havertz luckily managing to impress in the role on numerous occasions.

In midfield, uncertainty surrounds the futures of both Thomas Partey and Jorginho, potentially motivating the Gunners hierarchy to consider bringing in another quality option to partner club-record signing Declan Rice in the middle of the park.

"It's no great secret that Arsenal want to sign a striker this summer. When the window opens it will be the priority, along with a midfielder and potentially another wide attacker," said reliable journalist Charles Watts recently.

"It will be interesting to see whether they move for Victor Osimhen. He, like Toney, is a player they like and I know that his representatives have visited Arsenal's training ground for talks with Edu. Those talks took place in the summer when Arsenal eventually signed Gabriel Jesus. Jesus was always the priority that year, but Osimhen was definitely a player they viewed as a serious alternative.

"That interest will remain, but the Nigerian could prove to be too costly an option in a summer given Arsenal want to spread their budget around as they look to take the squad to the next level."

For the midfield, Arsenal have been long-term admirers of Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, but he may be hard to prise away from Unai Emery's side if they qualify for the Champions League. However, it is believed another top-flight star in Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is attracting their interest as well.

Arsenal ready to move for Guimaraes this summer

The £160,000-per-week ace is a star for Eddie Howe's side, and it is believed Arsenal are big admirers of him.

The Boot Room now report that Arsenal are ready to make a move for Guimaraes this summer if they get the impression he's open to it, with his contract thought to include a £100 million release clause. The Brazilian, interestingly, has attracted huge praise from City boss Guardiola this season.

"An exceptional holding midfielder; aggressive, with the ball has the pause, on set-pieces he's aggressive," said Guardiola on Guimaraes just last month.

"A real, real complete holding midfielder since playing in Lyon."
