Suggested Solutions: Southampton’s formation

Any Southampton fans thinking the appointment of Mark Hughes would provide an instantaneous bounce to steer them clear of the battle of survival were brought crashing down to earth on Saturday as Saints were thumped 3-0 by relegation rivals West Ham at the London Stadium.

The Welshman’s utilisation of 4-4-2 appeared the much-needed solution to Southampton’s lack of goal threat this term and although it had the desired effect in a 2-0 win over Wigan before the international break, it backfired spectacularly in east London as the visitors failed to register a single shot on target.

Southampton still have enough games left to make amends; they have a game in hand on the rest of the bottom five and seven fixtures remaining in total, so the two-point difference between themselves and 17th place is certainly surmountable.

But the pivotal question is where Southampton go from here tactically after Hughes’ brave adoption of 4-4-2 resulted in such a humbling performance. Football FanCast outline four potential solutions…

Solution A – 4-4-2

Southampton looked miles off the pace using 4-4-2 on Saturday but the performance was so bad that it’s almost simplistic to put it down to merely the formation.

This side is clearly low in confidence and a back-to-basics approach will surely be required to turn their form around. 4-4-2 certainly falls into that remit and while it does leave Southampton more open defensively, they’ve reached a point in the season where they need to score enough goals to win games.

Having two strikers on the pitch could be key, however creativity and penetration from out wide is just as important in 4-4-2 – Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond didn’t offer much of that on Saturday.

Solution B – Diamond

Claude Puel’s persistent utilisation of a diamond midfield last season drew criticism but Southampton’s results were almost incomparably better than they have been so far this term.

It certainly addresses how Saints’ wide players have struggled to impact the more the season’s gone on, by simply taking them out of the side altogether and moving the creative hub to the tip of the engine room – a role that may suit the ageing Dusan Tadic far better.

It also allows the full-backs, who are good going forward, the natural space to join the attack while keeping two centre-forwards on the pitch.

Solution C – 4-2-3-1

Fans grew increasingly frustrated with Mauricio Pellegrino’s almost unwavering insistence on 4-2-3-1 but Southampton did at least look far more solid in the setup compared to last Saturday when the openness of their midfield was continually exploited by West Ham.

It always seemed a little too conservative under the Argentine but Hughes can give it a more offensive feel if he pushes Redmond and Sofiane Boufal much higher up the pitch, creating space for Tadic in the central role. The big problem, however, is how isolated the striker can become in these systems.

Charlie Austin’s hold-up play isn’t the best anyway, so he’ll definitely need support from out wide and the midfield.

Solution D – 3-4-3

Southampton briefly flirted with a three-man defence earlier this season but after losing both of their games quickly reverted back to 4-2-3-1.

Perhaps it’s time to give the setup another try, especially with Maya Yoshida back on the mend and Saints undoubtedly requiring defensive improvements from their last performance. Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares have the attacking flair and industry to operate as wing-backs, while utilising Boufal and Tadic as inside forwards should at least ensure there’s some support for Austin up front.

It’s a seismic shift to experiment with at this point in the season though, and could backfire.

Wigan must seek fire-power in January or they’ll be down

It has been a miserable season for Wigan Athletic, currently occupying the relegation spaces in the Championship and they are in real danger of relegation to League One.

Malky Mackay’s men are 23rd after 26 matches, five points from safety. Whilst defensively they haven’t overly conceded – 10 teams have conceded more – it is the lack of goals that is severely hurting Wigan. The Latics have only scored 26 times in the Championship, with Callum McManaman the top scorer, netting just five times.

This has resulted in just four league victories all season – one in their last 12 – and Wigan really do look like a team lacking in confidence heading towards the third tier of English football. Malky Mackay was brought in under controversial circumstances in November but hasn’t managed to stop the rot at all, winning just one of his eight league matches in charge.

The club’s fortunes are vastly different from last season. In their first season since relegation from the Premier League, Wigan finished in very respectable fifth position. This was before narrowly losing to QPR 2-1 on aggregate, thanks to a Charlie Austin extra-time winner in the play-off semi-finals. But this summer saw a number of key players leave, which took the spine out of the side.

Jordi Gomez left for Sunderland, which was a big blow, as the midfielder racked up over 150 appearances for the club. Jean Beasuejour returned home to Chile after two years with the Latics, while James McArthur went to Crystal Palace for £7million, with Wigan evidently missing his control in the centre of the park. On-loan Manchester United striker Nick Powell was the club’s top goalscorer last season and losing him has left thim with a lack of fire power up front this term.

Demonstrating this fact is how strikers Marc-Antoine Fortune, Martyn Waghorn and young Andy Delort have scored just three goals between them so far this season. This is a damning statistic that has to be addressed in this transfer window by Malky Mackay.

The Latics still have the services of Callum McManaman and James McClean, but only smart recruitment is likely to save the club from a second relegation in three seasons.

Defensively Wigan aren’t as bad but they could do with tightening up. They miss Gary Caldwell’s leadership and experience, with the defender suffering an injury-ridden past couple of years. Despite this, there is still plenty of Premier League and international experience at the back.

Former England goalkeeper Scott Carson has now become a regular between the sticks since his move in 2013. He has plenty of Premier League experience that makes him crucial to Wigan’s fortunes, while the likes of James Perch and Captain Emmerson Boyce also add vital Premier League knowhow.

With the addition of former West Brom and Aston Villa defender Liam Ridgewell, there should be enough quality at the back to make it difficult for teams to break them down. Ridgewell has recently been playing in America and hasn’t played football much in the past couple of months but once he finds his feet, he could prove to be a smart signing for the Latics.

The FA Cup glory of 2013 already feels like a distant memory for Wigan fans, but it could become even more distant if the Latics succumb to yet another relegation.

Keane not keen on Premier League switch

Los Angeles Galaxy striker Robbie Keane has distanced himself from a January loan switch to the Premier League, insisting he wants to rest over the winter.

The Republic of Ireland international has been linked with temporary moves to QPR and Aston Villa next month, with the MLS finished until spring 2013.

A number of players, including Keane, have elected to move during the off-season in a bid to maintain match fitness, and keep their name in the fold for international squads.

However, the 32-year-old has distanced himself with a return to England, maintaining that he will use the break to recover from the Galaxy’s domestic success of 2012:

“I am going to rest up and get ready for next season with the Galaxy. “ he told the Evening Herald.

“I haven’t even thought about taking up with any other teams, I have a few little niggles that I have to sort out before I even contemplate making any decisions,

“There has been a lot of speculation and a few clubs are interested but it wouldn’t be right for me to go anywhere if I wasn’t 100 per cent fit and ready.

“I don’t have any major problems, just an Achilles injury, but if that isn’t right, I won’t be going anywhere.

The ex-Liverpool and Tottenham forward went on to suggest that he is hoping to be at full fitness for Ireland’s international games next year:

“2013 is going to be a big year for Ireland in March – two very important games.

Captain Henderson was at the heart of slick England performance

Jordan Henderson divides opinion but Gareth Southgate again named him as England captain for the 1-0 victory over Holland on Friday night.

There are some who think that Henderson is a limited player, nothing more than an energetic runner who lacks the guile and passing range to make an impression at the highest level.

Southgate’s England are committed to short passing, taking their time on the ball and playing their way out of trouble. That might not sound like Henderson’s natural game but he appeared to cope well with those demands in Amsterdam.

He was constantly involved, having the most touches of any England player and was able to dominate proceedings alongside club team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the middle of the park.

95 per cent passing accuracy from 91 passes is hugely impressive and they are numbers worthy of comparison with any central midfielder that played across Europe this weekend.

Of course, Henderson lacks the class and consistency that some of those may offer but it is a good sign for Southgate nonetheless.

One shot and three interceptions shows that the Liverpool skipper was involved at both ends of the pitch; the demands placed on him in terms of controlling things in the centre didn’t impact too much on his ability to cover round and get involved.

Only 16 long passes shows the commitment of Henderson – valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt – to playing the ball short and along the floor and while Henderson should face stiffer challenges this summer, the early signs are promising for Southgate.

Has Henderson done enough to be named captain on a full-time basis? Let us know your thoughts…

He’s exactly what Tottenham and Arsenal need… but who will win the race for his signature?

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding imminent bids from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for Southampton’s star man Morgan Schneiderlin in January.

The Frenchman has been in impressive form so far this season and could be exactly what the north London duo need should they make a move for him in the winter window. Schneiderlin does the simple things extremely well for Southampton, he has recorded the team’s second-highest pass total so far this season with 858 (Jose Fonte leads the way with 961) which is an impressive stat considering his recent injury struggles. He is also Southampton’s second highest Premier League goalscorer with three goals, trailing Pelle’s tally of eight. The Frenchman has also made 37 tackles so far this season, with Victor Wanyama the only Southampton midfielder producing more (43).

If Schneiderlin does opt to move away from St Marys, he will almost certainly be deployed in a defensive midfield role, a position Tottenham and Arsenal desperately need to strengthen. Firstly, Arsenal’s defensive midfield options have been quite weak this campaign. Mathieu Flamini has managed 28 tackles this season and has completed 715 passes so far. The other defensive option of Mikel Arteta is not good reading for Arsenal fans either, as he has only made nine tackles and produced 400 passes in the Premier League this term. Schneiderlin is stronger in the air compared to Flamini as well, with the Southampton midfielder winning 22 headers compared to Flamini’s 19. In fact, Morgan Schneiderlin completely dominates the stats when put head to head against the likes of Flamini and Arteta. The defensive midfield area has been highlighted as a problem position for Arsenal for a long time now and Schneiderlin will offer much improvement in that particular area.

A similar story lies with Tottenham. Both Etienne Capoue (23 tackles) and Ryan Mason (33 tackles) cannot match Schneiderlin’s figures. Capoue also registers the second-highest passing statistics at Tottenham with 676 successful passes, which is still way off the Frenchman’s total. The combined total of headers won by both Mason and Capoue only amounts to 17 so again, Schneiderlin is the better option in the defensive midfield role. Tottenham fans will argue that Ryan Mason isn’t exactly a defensive midfielder and that he has been in impressive form this season. This is completely true but it also reveals Tottenham’s desperate need to strengthen in this particular area of the pitch. Although Capoue is a competent performer, he is not a better option than Southampton’s midfield man.

Although stats are not always the best way to determine the ability of a player, a complete dominance from Morgan Schneiderlin suggests that the midfielder will improve the midfield of both Tottenham and Arsenal. This will worry Southampton as the player himself wanted to leave the club in the summer. However, their recent run of form may persuade the Frenchman to stay until the end of the season at least.

Also, Ronald Koeman will be determined to keep hold of his best players after a turbulent summer transfer window; the Dutchman will want to avoid the panic of replacing star names once again in January. Southampton will be doing all they can to keep hold of the 25-year-old, whether they can do it or not remains to be seen but Schneiderlin is a very attractive proposition for the two North London clubs.

Do some players have the wool pulled over their eyes?

Everyone has seen their club sign a good player but then watch confused as they are not given the chance of regular first team football.

This season, the most high-profile player to have been the victim of this is QPR’s Robert Green. After deciding to leave West Ham for a ‘new challenge’ after they were promoted back to the Premier League in May, Green signed for QPR on the understanding that he would be the club’s first choice keeper.

But a month later Brazilian keeper Julio Cesar arrived at Loftus Road with Green instead warming the bench, left sulking in the shadow of Champions League winning star. This got me thinking wether players are sometimes tricked in to signing for a club without actually knowing what’s in store for them.

Last week Green spoke out about his disappointment at the way he was treated at QPR by former manager Mark Hughes. He words were quite shocking, especially when you consider how much he was liked at West Ham and how he probably wishes he stayed there instead.

Green said: “I asked Mark Hughes. He told me Julio was going to play, that I’d done nothing wrong and that he wanted two top keepers competing for the position. I replied ‘Well, if he’s going straight into the first team he’s not really competing, is he? Where does that leave me?'”

The keeper then goes on to explain how Hughes told him that he was free to leave whenever he wanted, which he describes as “not quite what I wanted to hear.”

[post_link url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/it-is-time-the-premier-league-learn-a-lesson-from-forest-green-rovers,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/are-tv-rights-more-of-a-problem-to-football-than-a-luxury-these-days,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/are-wingers-essential-to-thrive-in-the-premier-league” target=”_blank” type=”list”]

The problem here is that Hughes pretty much tricked Green in to signing for a club that had no real intention of making him a permanent first choice fixture in the team. That all seems to have changed since Harry Redknapp took over, but that’s not the point.

But how can it be prevented? If a manager wants a player, regardless of what plans they have for him, they will do and say anything to ensure they get his signature. QPR might well have been the only club that offered Green first team football, so to then freeze him out just months later is not fair on a keeper who can still cut it at the highest level.

And at what point does it become a breach of contract, or is that where players are missing a trick? I’m no expert at what’s exactly outlined in a contract between club and player, but surely a detailed job description would be in there some where?

In Robert Green’s case, the contract may have said: “Position: First team goalkeeper. Job role: To concede as little goals as possible on a weekly basis.” If I’m right then QPR have breached his contract. He hasn’t been able  to concede as little goals as possible on a weekly basis because he wasn’t playing, which isn’t his fault.

Green obviously isn’t the only player to have been tricked in to signing a contract, though. Robinho famously signed for Manchester City (ironically by Mark Hughes) thinking he was actually signing for rivals United, although the move may have been more down to his overall confusion about where he was going to end up after he initially thought Chelsea was going to be his final destination.

And what about Scott Sinclair’s move to Manchester City? Aside from the obvious attraction of money, was he promised more football than what he’s actually getting or did he know he would have no chance at making a positive impact on a team packed with some of the world’s best players?

With all that in mind, maybe it is time for players to insist that their squad status is outlined specifically in their contracts from now on, that way they we won’t see the likes of Robert Green being treated the way he did any longer.

West Ham fans agree with Lampard comments

Frank Lampard, speaking on Saturday night’s Match of the Day, claimed that West Ham United had ‘gone backwards’ since moving to the London Stadium.

Saturday proved to be a sad day for the Hammers with the unsavoury scenes that occurred during the 3-0 home defeat to Burnley.

It would be fair to say that Lampard is not exactly the most popular figure at West Ham following the manner of his exit in 2001, but the club’s fans, who appear to be losing faith in head coach David Moyes, wholeheartedly agreed with the 39-year-old’s comments surrounding the situation.

[ad_pod ]

Lampard played close to 200 games for West Ham before leaving to join Chelsea in 2001, and it is clear that he was saddened by the events at his former club.

West Ham have dropped to 16th position in the Premier League table, but they do have time to recover from Saturday’s shameful scenes due to the fact that they will not return to the field until March 31 at home to Southampton.

Five reasons Liverpool should make this January strike addition

Even though CSKA Moscow have opened talks regarding a new deal with Seydou Doumbia, a January move for the impressive Ivory Coast international is not yet off the table.

The highly-rated striker has been in terrific form in Russia for some time, and looks, at 26, to be at the correct stage of his career to make the ‘big move, which has alerted Liverpool. The Reds’ forward issues have been well documented in recent times, so getting Doumbia in now would make some sense, right?

We at FFC Towers think so, and here’s why…

[ffc-gallery]

CLICK ON SEYDOU DOUMBIA TO REVEAL THE FIVE REASONS

[/ffc-gallery]

[ad_pod id=’ricco’ align=’center’]

Proven goal record

Okay, Doumbia may have only played in Switzerland and Russia since his move to European football, but with a goal record of around two in three at Young Boys and CSKA he has certainly showed that he has what it takes when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net

.

His performances in both ‘legs’ against Manchester City in the Champions League this season really showed that he can do it on the biggest stage, so it cannot be a coincidence that interest in his signature has increased on the back of his destruction of Manuel Pellegrini’s Sky Blues.

Pace & Power

Raw speed and physicality are two key traits for top class strikers. Too slow and you’ll struggle to work the space needed, too weak and you’ll find it difficult to escape bullying centre-backs. Doumbia may not be the finest technical player around, but his pace and power make him a real handful for defenders – as was, again, on display against Man City.

Such a playing style could work well with Daniel Sturridge, whose movement opens up space for his striker partner.

Better than Liverpool’s crop of strugglers

//www.youtube.com/embed/poul9EoEYiM

It may be a bit early, but Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli look like write offs. The Merseyside-born ace is more of a competition winner than a Reds player, while ‘Super Mario’ has certainly not lived up to his nickname. It would be no surprise to see one, or both, out of the door at Anfield by this time next year, so drafting in a newbie makes sense.

Doumbia has a better work rate than Balotelli and is more mobile than Lambert, making him a much, much better option to support Sturridge.

Won’t cost a fortune

CSKA have opened contract talks with their man recently, but should their aim to tie him down end in disappointment, bids of around £15m may be enough to lure the 26-year-old away from Moscow. In the modern transfer market such a fee is minimal, making him a genuine alternative to more pricey options such as Gonzalo Higuain – who is likely to move for upwards of £30m if he is sold by Napoli.

Keep him away from rivals

Liverpool are not the only English side in the hunt for the Ivorian, with Chelsea, Spurs an Arsenal also monitoring his situation. Should the Reds opt against a deal, it’s possible that the CSKA man could show up another club in the Premier League, which will come as a body blow to Brendan Rodgers – who has lost out on numerous targets to divisional rivals in recent years.

It may not be a wise transfer policy on the whole, but snapping up Doumbia to prevent him turning out for a direct competitor could be sensible this time.

Reading 3-4 Manchester United – Match Review

Manchester United beat Reading in a seven goal thriller at the Madjeski Stadium to move three points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men made the trip to Berkshire expecting a routine victory against the relegation threatened Royal’s as they aimed to stretch their lead over local rivals City.

But, in a first half that saw seven goals scored and one disallowed in a manic 34 minute period, United were put through their paces by Brian McDermott’s spirited side, who deserve recognition for their efforts on another memorable night at the Madjeski.

It took just eight minutes for the first goal to arrive as Hal Robson-Kanu put the hosts in front, taking advantage of Jonny Evans’s poor clearing header to control and lash the ball past Anders Lindegaard from close range.

But within seven minutes they were behind as Anderson exchanged passes with Ashley Young before firing past Adam Federici at the near post just before the quarter hour. Jay Tabb then hauled Evans down in the penalty area allowing Wayne Rooney to calmly convert the first of his two goals from the spot and give the visitors a 2-1 lead after just 16 minutes.

Still, United have looked frail defensively this season and were behind once again as they conceded two identical goals from set pieces. Firstly, a corner from Nicky Shorey was headed in by Adam Le Fondre in the 19th minute and the left back repeated the trick four minutes later, delivering for Sean Morrison nod home.

The visitors weren’t done though and were level again when Rooney was positioned well to side-foot Patrice Evra’s cross into the net to make it 3-3. And the scoring was complete in the 34th minute as Robin Van Persie finished with precision after latching onto a flick from his strike partner.

It could have been five had the had the officials seen Van Persie’s effort cross the line before being hacked away by Shaun Cummings before firing the best chance of the second half over the bar after a mistake from Federici.

Jonny Hayes’ fresh injury worry couldn’t have come at a worse time for the player

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic have been left sweating on the fitness of winger Jonny Hayes, having just recently returned to the first team squad after breaking his leg in his debut season at the Hoops.

What’s the story?

Hayes suffered a season ending injury back in December against Dundee after a clash with Josh Meekings and made his first appearance in a friendly match just days ago.

Now though he’s potentially facing another spell on the sidelines after coming off in the Hoops’ latest friendly against Bohemians Prague this weekend.

The Scottish Sun now say he is facing a fight to be fit for the side’s UEFA Champions League qualifier against Alashkert later this month.

Brendan Rodgers confirmed it was a thigh strain, telling the paper:

Jonny’s thigh is a bit tight and we’ll just have to see how he is. It’s a shame for him as he started the game quite well combining with Scott Sinclair down the left.

Hopefully, we have just been a wee bit cautious but he felt his thigh when he had the shot that just went wide.

Unfortunately, it can happen when a player comes back after a long time out.

Jonny is very dynamic but hopefully it was just a twinge and it will be nothing too serious.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”259344″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch JeanClaude Billong quickfire questions”]

Will Hayes ever play a key role at Celtic?

Many were surprised to begin with when Jonny Hayes signed for the Hoops from Aberdeen last summer, despite undoubtedly being one of the division’s best players outside of the Hoops squad, shining for the Dons for a number of seasons.

He struggled to make an impact in the first half of the season and was obviously then ruled out of action in 2018.

With Patrick Roberts leaving the club this summer and Scott Sinclair losing form, the upcoming qualifiers could have been huge for him in trying to cement a place in Brendan Rodgers’ first team plans.
