Van Niekerk and Lee blow India away

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDane van Niekerk has nine wickets from 18.2 overs at Grace Road•ICC

Dane van Niekerk returned to the venue of her history-making spell against West Indies to produce a performance par excellence, with bat and ball, to demolish India in Leicester. On a dry and mostly placid track, the South Africa captain used flight, drift and, for large parts, lack of turn, to finish with 4 for 22 off her 10 overs. That spell was the full stop to India’s ambitions of pulling off the third highest chase in Women’s ODIs. In the end, they lost their first match of this World Cup, falling short of the target of 274 by 115 runs, and might well rue their decision to bowl at the toss.Mithali Raj, who had made that call, came into the match needing 34 runs to becoming the highest run-scorer in Women’s ODIs. She arrived at the crease with India on 47 for 2 but, after misjudging a straighter one, was bowled for her first ever golden duck. So it was that Van Niekerk won the battle of the captains. Her legspin sparked a collapse as India slipped to 65 for 7 and best of all, she had ensured South Africa stayed in the running for a semi-final spot.Lizelle Lee’s innings played a large part in things turning out the way they did. She smacked a brutal 92 off 65 balls with seven sixes – the third time she has struck as many – to lead South Africa to an imposing total. It was well beyond anything India had chased down in ODIs.There were ominous signs right from the start, when Marizanne Kapp, the No. 1-ranked ODI bowler, struck with her second ball. Smiriti Mandhana, having flayed her first ball for four through point, was caught at deep square leg.Poonam Raut and Deepti Sharma went about rebuilding the innings with a 43-run second-wicket stand but that period of stability – the only one for India – ended when Ayabonga Khaka produced a slower ball to deceive the advancing Raut and bowl her.Mithali was handed her first duck in five years by van Niekerk, who then trapped Harmanpreet Kaur lbw in the same over. A ripper from Khaka – pitching on a good length and nipping away off the seam – took care of Veda Krishnamurthy and her stumps. Shikha Pandey ran past a legbreak from van Niekerk and three overs later, Sushma Verma ran herself out as India went into freefall at 65 for 7.If not for Deepti’s composed 60 off 111 balls – which exemplified how good the pitch was to bat on – India might have struggled to even cross 100.Mithali later explained that she was persuaded to bowl at Grace Road by people informing her that it was a chasing ground, and she also wanted to follow the template from the Women’s World Cup qualifier final when India beat South Africa by hunting down a target of 245.But those plans did not account Lee’s belligerence. She was separated from her opening partner Laura Wolvaardt in the second over but that seemed to only spur her on. She took the wicket-taker Pandey for two fours and a six to double South Africa’s score – 16 at the time – in a single over. The biggest way in which Lee upset India’s bowling was by taking on Ekta Bisht. The left-arm spinner has been a vital source of wickets during the middle overs, but here, she was smashed for 25 runs in 11 balls by the South African opener, and finished with figures of 9-0-68-2.Lee’s knock was extremely well constructed. Her first fifty runs came off 44 balls, the next 42 came off only 21. Wide deliveries were slapped with force through extra cover. Taking pace off the ball didn’t work for she simply came down the track and exploited the short straight boundaries. Long-hops were duly dispatched over cow corner and by the end, Lee found herself with seven sixes in the innings, equaling her own South African record in ODIs.India seemed like they had gained respite when Harmanpreet had Lee lbw in her first over, and with it being the 21st of the innings, there was still time for a salvage operation. But van Niekerk wouldn’t allow for it. Having come in during the 28th over, she held steady until the 44th, when she survived a run-out as Goswami couldn’t collect the throw at the bowler’s end. That reprieve got her going as she went from 31 off 49 balls to 57 off 66, pushing her tally to seven fours and a six.

Kohli-Kumble episode should have been handled better – Ganguly

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has admitted that the differences between former coach Anil Kumble and captain Virat Kohli had not been handled properly

‘Kumble and Shastri approaches different, but goal the same’ – R Sridhar, India’s fielding coach

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has said that the differences between former coach Anil Kumble and captain Virat Kohli had not been handled properly. Ganguly is a member of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) that is tasked by the BCCI with identifying India’s new coach, and had zeroed in on Kumble last year. The CAC, it is understood, was also entrusted with the responsibility of breaking the impasse between Kohli and Kumble, but after discussions with Kohli, it reported to the board that the relationship was beyond repair.”The matter between Kumble and Kohli should have been handled a lot better, by whoever in charge. It was not handled properly,” Ganguly told reporters in Kolkata on Tuesday. On Sunday, during the state associations’ meeting with the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators, Ganguly disagreed that the CAC was undermined by the Kumble-Kohli episode. He had then pithily spelt out what kind of coach the committee was looking for: “[The one] who can win cricket matches.”With the deadline for applications for the job of coach extended till July 9 following Kumble’s exit, Ganguly, along with his former team-mates Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, will now have to look into the applications of the five candidates that have already submitted their resumes – Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput, Richard Pybus and Dodda Ganesh – as well as those of anyone else who applies for the post. The latest contender is former India team director Ravi Shastri, whom Kumble replaced last year. Shastri told ESPNcricinfo that “he will apply for sure”.Incidentally, Ganguly and Shastri were involved in a spat during the interview process to appoint the coach last year. While Shastri was affronted by Ganguly’s absence during the interview, the latter took a dig at Shastri not turning up in person to make his presentation. Now, asked about Shastri’s application, Ganguly said: “Everybody has got the right to apply. We will find out. I can also apply, provided I am not an administrator.”Kumble’s resignation came four days before the limited-overs tour to the Caribbean began, with him deeming his partnership with Kohli to be “untenable”. The exit had come following media reports that Kohli had told the BCCI that some players weren’t comfortable with Kumble’s “intimidating” approach to managing players. Consequently, despite Kumble’s successful one-year tenure, the board invited fresh applications for the head coach’s position instead of extending his contract, which ran till the end of the Champions Trophy.Kumble, who was given a direct entry, reapplied for the job, and was learnt to have accepted the BCCI’s offer to extend his contract for the West Indies series. He subsequently said, however, that he couldn’t continue given the reservations that Kohli had with his methods.

Fulham Agree £15m Deal For "Fantastic" Colossus

Fulham have agreed a £15m deal for Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu, while they are also close to signing Ajax's Calvin Bassey, according to a report from talkSPORT.

What's the latest Fulham transfer news?

Fulham have been pursuing a new centre-back during the summer transfer window, with Benfica's Morato emerging as a major target, having recently made a €25m (£22m) offer for the Brazilian, however they are now set to bring their pursuit to an end.

As reported by the Portuguese media, Benfica "remain adamant" they will not sell the 22-year-old, rejecting the most recent offer made, meaning the Cottagers are set to move on to other targets, with Bassey one of the names on their list.

Marco Silva may have to bring in more than one new defender this summer, amid the uncertainty over Tosin Adarabioyo's future, with the Englishman's contract set to expire at the end of next season, meaning it is Fulham's last chance to cash-in.

Talks over a contract extension for Adarabioyo have broken down, and Tottenham Hotspur have recently asked for more information about the 25-year-old, so he could be on his way to north London this summer.

As such, Silva has set his sights on signing Salisu and Bassey, with talkSPORT reporting they have agreed a £15m deal with Southampton for the former, meaning personal terms are the only thing that need to be finalised.

Sky Sports have reported that AS Monaco also expressed an interest in signing the centre-back, but the French side have had two bids rejected, and it now appears as though the Cottagers have won the race for his signature.

Bassey is also thought to be heading to Craven Cottage, in a deal worth around £18m, and the Ajax defender is set to have his medical and finalise personal terms in the coming days.

How good is Mohammed Salisu?

Lauded as "fantastic" by members of the media, the 24-year-old was one of the few shining lights in the Southampton side that was relegated from the Premier League in the 2022-23 campaign, and he could be a solid acquisition for Fulham.

With an average WhoScored match rating of 6.78 in the top flight, the Saints defender was ranked as the second-best performing player in the squad, averaging more tackles per game than any other member of the team.

Not only is the Ghanaian a very good tackler, he also ranks very highly for clearances and blocks per 90 over the course of the past year, placing in the 96th and 99th percentile in those two areas, when compared to his positional peers.

Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

At 24-years-old, the Southampton star should be entering his prime years, and he has out-performed Adarabioyo on almost every key defensive metric in the past year, indicating he could be a real upgrade on the Englishman.

A fee of just £15m could be an absolute bargain for Salisu, given the level of his performances for Southampton in recent times, and it is promising news that a deal is edging closer towards completion.

Rashid's best sends Yorkshire top

Rangers Can Complete Their Defence With £2m Transfer Swoop

Glasgow Rangers completed their seventh signing of the summer transfer window last week as they welcome Leon Balogun back to Ibrox on a one-year deal.

The Light Blues snapped up the Nigerian international on a free transfer to bolster their defensive options after Leon King suffered a significant injury blow during pre-season training.

Sam Lammers, Dujon Sterling, Jack Butland, Cyriel Dessers, Kieran Dowell, and Abdallah Sima have all also joined the club's ranks since the end of last season, with Michael Beale attempting to improve his squad after a trophyless campaign.

The Gers failed to collect a single piece of silverware in the 42-year-old head coach's first term in charge and he will surely be hoping that these signings are able to play a part in major success over the next nine months.

They may not be done in the market yet, though, as the deadline does not pass until the 1st of September and Rangers could make another addition to their defence by signing Auston Trusty.

The Light Blues have been linked with a swoop for the £2m-rated central defender this summer and the USA international could complete Beale's options in that area of the pitch.

Is Auston Trusty left-footed?

Trusty is a left-footed centre-back who is also capable of being deployed at left-back, which means that he would be a useful player for the manager to call upon throughout next season as the talented gem can play in multiple positions.

The signing of Balogun has left Rangers with three available right-footed central defenders, including him, Connor Goldson, and Scotland international John Souttar. Meanwhile, Ben Davies, who arrived on a permanent deal from Premier League side Liverpool last year, is the only senior left-footed stopper at the club.

This suggests that Beale does not have a natural replacement for the former Preston North End titan as his other options in that position would need to play on their lesser-favoured foot on that side of the pitch, which could impact build-up play if they are not able to comfortably pass out from the back on their left.

Former Birmingham loanee Auston Trusty.

Trusty is also coming off the back of an impressive season with Birmingham on loan in the English Championship. The 24-year-old tank averaged a Sofascore match rating of 6.97 across 44 starts, which is a higher score than Davies, Souttar, and King managed during the Scottish Premiership campaign last term.

He made an eye-catching 3.8 tackles and interceptions combined per match for his side, which highlights the enforcer's knack for constantly cutting out opposition attacks, whilst Goldson's 2.3 per game for Rangers led the way for Beale's centre-backs.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for the 6 foot 3 colossus, who is younger than all the aforementioned players in his position outside of King, to be an excellent addition to the squad due to his ability to deliver consistently superb defensive displays.

Trusty, who was hailed as "incredible" by teammate George Friend, could complete Beale's defence by arriving as competition for Davies in the left-centre-back spot whilst also having the potential to be an upgrade on what the manager already has at his disposal.

Rangers Could Land Their Next Bassey In Deal For 22 y/o Brute

Under Steven Gerrard, Glasgow Rangers signed a few players who went on to secure the Ibrox side a major profit.

Both Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey arrived in 2019 and 2020 respectively from Charlton Athletic and Leicester City and established themselves at the Light Blues, impressing enough in Scotland to seal moves away.

Aribo moved to the Premier League last summer, joining Southampton for a fee of £10m while Bassey joined European heavyweights Ajax for a club record £23m transfer fee, which represented a stunning profit from just the £250k they spent on him two years prior – having being dubbed a “top talent” by journalist Keith Downie in the process.

Bassey, in particular, developed at a rapid rate during his spell in Glasgow, emerging from being just another talented youngster to a first-team star who claimed a Premiership title medal, before being an instrumental cog in the Gers’ run to the Europa League final during the 2021/22 campaign, also adding a Scottish Cup winners medal to his collection.

Could Michael Beale now secure his own talent from south of the border that may embark on a similar trajectory to Bassey? As the Light Blues are now being linked with a move for Burnley centre-back Bobby Thomas this summer according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon.

If Beale wants him as part of his squad ahead of next term, then he must act fast, as Championship sides Queen Park Rangers and Cardiff City are also keen on the 22-year-old.

Could Bobby Thomas join Rangers?

Having signed just two defenders during the transfer window, Dujon Sterling and Leon Balogun, Beale may wish to add some more depth to his area, especially with the rigours of a hectic season ahead.

Although Thomas has made just 73 senior appearances over the previous three seasons, he was hailed as a player who “has the makings of a good defender” by journalist Sam Frost in January following his departure from a loan spell at Bristol Rovers, and it suggests he has plenty of talent to succeed at the top level.

He suitably impressed in the English third tier last season, averaging 1.3 tackles per game, while also winning four aerial duels per game, indicating that he could provide a commanding presence at set pieces.

Bassey registered just 1.8 aerial duels won during his final season at Rangers while edging slightly ahead with regard to tackles won per game (1.5), but these figures show that Thomas could be an interesting choice for Beale ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Soccer Football – Europa League – Round of 16 First Leg – Rangers v Crvena Zvezda – Ibrox, Glasgow, Scotland, Britain – March 10, 2022 Rangers’ Calvin Bassey celebrates after the match REUTERS/Carl Recine

The Nigerian international had played a grand total of zero senior matches before joining the Ibrox side in 2020, being thrust into the deep end and learning along the way, and it certainly stood him in good stead. Thomas already has a wealth of professional experience, albeit in League One and Two, yet he could take solace from Bassey and turn into a talent which may eventually make the Gers a profit.

The 6 foot 1 brute would perhaps be a wildcard signing by Beale this summer, especially with the need for some more experience if a league title is to be won, yet combining young talent with experienced heads could well be the platform for the club to claim some much-needed silverware.

Klopp Could Sign Ideal Lavia Alternative In Liverpool Swoop For 5ft 8 "Leader"

Liverpool are at risk of losing out on Romeo Lavia the longer the transfer saga drags on, but they may already have an alternative lined up in Fluminense midfielder Andre.

Who do Liverpool want to buy this summer?

It has already been a busy window for Jurgen Klopp's side, having spent close to £100m on bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to strengthen their midfield.

Those arrivals helped offset the departures of Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but Klopp will almost certainly need another player in that position as Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are widely expected to depart for teams in Saudi Arabia.

Lavia is top of the Reds' wishlist, but The Athletic's David Ornstein reported on Tuesday that their initial offer of £37m was rejected by Southampton, who may be looking for a sum closer to the £50m mark.

That means Liverpool could be left disappointed in their pursuit of a player they are clearly eager to sign, but supporters should fear not.

According to Football Transfers, the Merseyside outfit are one of a number of Premier League clubs to have made an initial approach for talented ace Andre, and Fluminense are open to selling the €25m-valued (£21m) midfielder at the end of the Brazilian Serie A season.

Who is Brazilian midfielder Andre?

Andre – or Andre Trindade da Costa Neto, to give him his full name – is a 22-year-old midfielder who has spent his three-year senior career to date with Fluminense.

The Ibirataia native has made 110 league appearances for the Tricolor, scoring three teams. Indeed, Andre is far more accustomed to picking up yellow cards than creating goals, having been cautioned a pretty incredible 31 times already, as per Soccerway.

That provides a strong indication of what Andre's game is all about; a player who is in the side to help break things up, rather than get forward and finish off chances himself.

There are plenty of comparisons to be made between Andre and fellow Liverpool target Lavia, who picked up nine yellow cards in 29 Premier League appearances last season.

Southampton's Romeo Lavia

For added context, Fabinho received 11 bookings last season – no other Liverpool player received more than five – so that destructive midfielder is very much what Klopp is seeking.

As already touched on, neither Andre nor Lavia are in the side to score goals, as reflected in their near identical returns of 0.47 and 0.49 shots every 90 minutes respectively, as per FBref.

Andre has a better pass-completion percentage than Lavia (93.2 v 86.2) and boasts a better take-on success rate (59.4% v 56%), though the quality of the two divisions must be factored in.

Described as "incredible" by Brazilian journalist Victor Canedo, 5 foot 8 Andre also outshines Lavia in key defensive metrics such as tackles won per 90 (1.72 v 1.42) and interceptions per 90 (1.56 v 1.34).

The advantage of signing Lavia is that he has Premier League experience, but if it is a cheaper alternative the Reds want in an identical mould, then Andre may just be Klopp's ideal signing.

Rangers Could Forget Sakala By Signing "Special" Replacement

Glasgow Rangers look in great shape ahead of the 2023/24 season. The Ibrox side defeated Hamburg in their latest pre-season friendly following a defeat to Newcastle United in Allan McGregor’s testimonial, however it is the arrivals at the club which have boosted morale.

Seven signings have been made by Michael Beale, with a few more to come before the transfer window slams shut, but the onus will now be moving on the players who don’t have a future at the Gers.

Who has left Rangers?

Antonio Colak is the only confirmed senior departure from the Light Blues this summer – aside from the raft of free-agent exits – however he won’t be the last. Scott Wright appears to also be on his way out of Rangers, while Glen Kamara might soon be closing in on a move to Leeds United for £4m.

Beale will be looking to raise some funds in order to bankroll future incomings and one player who could also leave the club, perhaps rather surprisingly, is Fashion Sakala.

The 4th Official claimed that an unnamed team from Saudi Arabia were looking to secure his signature for £4m this summer and Beale should jump at this offer considering the profit it would net the club.

Who does Michael Olunga play for?

During his spell at Rangers, Sakala has been a polarising figure. His "energy and enthusiasm" are arguably second to none – as previously hailed by pundit Alan Hutton – yet his lack of ruthlessness has dragged him down since arriving back in 2021.

Across two seasons, he has scored 24 goals – 12 per campaign – yet this could have been more as he missed 11 big chances during the 2022/23 league season and five the season before, indicating that Beale requires someone who has more composure in front of goal.

Michael Olunga could be the ideal player. The Kenyan currently plays for Al Duhail SC in Qatar and the Gers have been linked with a move for him in order to bolster their attacking options ahead of next term.

Danilo does appear to be Beale’s main target, yet the saga continues to drag on and Olunga may be an ideal alternative if a move for the Brazilian fails to materialise.

Lauded as “special” by his former boss Sabri Lamouchi in 2021, the striker has been in stunning form in front of goal over the previous few seasons.

83 goals have arrived across just 83 games for his current side, and he has scored a total of 161 club career goals, while adding another 21 in 48 matches for Kenya.

Rangers winger Fashion Sakala.

The 6 foot 2 machine has shone at the highest level for his country, scoring twice against Tanzania during the 2019 African Cup of Nations, and it’s evident that he could bring a ruthless streak to the Ibrox side which Sakala doesn’t quite have.

Across eight matches in the AFC Champions League, Asia’s equivalent to the Champions League, Olunga netted six times and took 3.9 shots per game, demonstrating his ability on the biggest stage.

In contrast, Sakala played just four matches in the Champions League and failed to score once, taking only 1.8 shots per game, certainly appearing to look out of depth against Europe’s elite last term.

There is no guarantee that the 29-year-old would be a success or even score goals at Rangers, yet his clinical nature suggests he could be worth taking a gamble on, and he could add some much-needed strength in depth to Beale’s squad.

Bates plunders first KSL century in stunning all-round display

Soon after hitting her 15th four, Bates completed her century off 63 deliveries with a push into the offside off Kristen Beams before celebrating with her fourth six.Lightning’s reply began disastrously as Villani, their key top-order batter, was run out at the non-striker’s end off just the fourth ball as left-arm seamer Tash Farrant deflected a drive by Amy Jones into the stumps.Villani, who missed Lightning’s opening match with a shoulder injury, was gone for 1 and when Perry was run out for 6 the home side’s position already looked irretrievable at 25 for 3, with only skipper Georgia Elwiss, Derbyshire’s Sarah Glenn and Thea Brookes offering anything of substance in reply.Beaten in both their opening matches, Lightning – semi-finalists last year – face a tough task to qualify for finals day this year. To rub salt in their wounds, allrounder Paige Scholfield has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after breaking a thumb in the defeat by Western Storm last Saturday.
