LANCE!

Aston Villa: Emery doesn’t really fancy Matty Cash

Matty Cash has been a strong performer since joining Aston Villa back in 2020. But, Ryan Taylor of the Daily Express has told GIVEMESPORT as to why everything might not be as it seems with the fullback.

Is Matty Cash surplus to requirements?

On the surface, Matty Cash has been a consistent performer for Aston Villa. He arrived at Villa Park from Nottingham Forest and quickly made that right-back berth his own.

Unai Emery’s management has seemingly taken Villa to the next level though and this may leave Cash behind if reports are to be believed.

European football is now something which this team will have to contend with and with that comes an even more demanding schedule. Where Matty Cash is concerned, Ashley Young joining Everton means there are even more minutes available in his position which could be a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing in that he himself can step up even more whilst as a curse, it could see Villa dip into the transfer market once again.

Sporting director Monchi arrived from Spanish football, as of course did manager Emery so the pair tend to shop in a market which they are very familiar with.

This aligns with a report from Estadio Deportivo that suggests that Monchi could make matters worse for Sevilla and swoop in for Gonzalo Montiel.

What has Ryan Taylor got to say in his update?

“They’re looking at full-backs in general. Konsa has been playing at right-back a little bit. Cash doesn't seem to be 100% fancied by Emery. He's probably the first choice, but I don't think Emery is sold on him.

“At left-back, they’ve got Alex Moreno, who was excellent at points last year. And there is a chance Lucas Digne could leave for Saudi Arabia, so again, the full-back areas are where they're looking at.

“I don't know of any concrete ties from what I've seen. There are a few in Spain that they've been looking at. Monchi is now the sporting director, so I suspect those are targets backed by him.”

The Monchi effect

Monchi is a world-renowned sporting director and his arrival in Birmingham was a real coup.

Links to Montiel make perfect sense when you consider Monchi’s track record and he wouldn’t be the only arrival from La Liga in this window.

Europa League winning centre-back Pau Torres made the move to Villa Park from Villarreal and is set to strengthen that area in the defence alongside Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and Diego Carlos, the latter who is also formerly of the Spanish top-flight.

Monchi is known for his contributions to the sport off of the field more so than his time with Sevilla on the field in the late 1990s. As previously mentioned, he played a huge part for that same club as a member of the hierarchy and he discovered a number of big names, including Jesus Navas, Sergio Ramos and the late Jose Antonio Reyes.

He also left a mark in Serie A with A.S. Roma before making his way to England with a return to Seville in between.

Royal London, the title sponsors of English one-day cricket, have extended their deal with the ECB for a further two years. The partnership, which encompasses England men’s and women’s domestic and international one-day cricket, will now be extended until the end of the 2019 season. The marquee fixtures in that period will include a five-match one-day series against Australia and a three-match series against India next summer, as England’s men build towards the World Cup in 2019.The announcement is a boost for the ECB’s commercial department, who suffered a setback earlier this year when Investec, the title sponsors of English Test cricket, activated a break clause with four years remaining on their £40 million ten-year deal.”It’s exciting that Royal London want to extend their relationship with cricket still further – building on the successful partnership we’ve forged together over the past four years,” said Sanjay Patel, the ECB’s commercial director.”With the England’s men’s one-day team victorious in all three one-day series last summer, the England women’s team winning the ICC Women’s World Cup and the Royal London One-Day Cup serving up a memorable Lord’s final, the 50-Over format continues to enjoy a significant media profile and offer valuable brand exposure.Emma Hill, Group Head of Brand and Sponsorship, Royal London said: “Our initial partnership with the ECB began at an important time in the company’s history as we re-launched the Royal London brand.”Owing to a very successful four years of cricket sponsorship, we’re thrilled to be committing to the sport for another two years as we continue on our brand building journey. Like cricket, we’re a brand steeped in rich heritage and tradition and we’re excited about what we can achieve in partnership together over the next two years.”

West Brom: Baggies In The Race To Sign Jake Cooper

West Brom are believed to be interested in signing Millwall defender Jake Cooper this summer, but a new report has revealed why it isn't going to be easy to acquire his signature.

What is Jake Cooper's salary at Millwall?

The 28-year-old has proven to be a stalwart for Millwall since arriving from Reading back in 2017, performing with real consistency at the heart of their defence.

In total, Cooper has made 303 appearances for his current club, and 304 in the Championship overall, and he has scored 22 goals and chipped in with 17 assists for the south London outfit, outlining the attacking threat that he can pose at set pieces with his 6 foot 6 frame.

The £10,000-a-week Englishman only has one more year remaining on his current Millwall deal, however, leaving them in a tricky situation. On one hand, they could sell him now and receive a fee for him, but lose a key player in the process, or on the flip side, accept that he will be able to leave for free at the end of next season.

Jake Cooper

Will West Brom sign Jake Cooper?

According to Football Insider, West Brom are in the mix to sign Cooper before the end of the month, but they face stiff competition for his signature from a couple of big clubs:

"Leeds United and West Brom have joined Rangers in the chase for Millwall defender Jake Cooper, sources have told Football Insider. The centre-back, 28, is entering the final year of his contract at the London club and his suitors are hoping to land him for a cut-price fee.

"Rangers have held a long-term interest in the former Reading man – and as Football Insider revealed on 11 August, have made contact over a potential deal.

"Now, Championship duo Leeds and West Brom have registered their interest in deals for Cooper as they look to win the race for his signature this month."

Cooper could be exactly what West Brom are after in the summer transfer window, although it clearly isn't going to be easy to bring him in over the likes of Leeds United and Rangers.

He is a proven Championship player who could immediately make the Baggies more of force at the back, having already conceded four times in their league matches to date in 2023/24, as well as another couple in the 2-1 defeat away to Stoke City in the EFL Cup.

Cooper has been hailed as "immense" and "absolutely outstanding" by Millwall manager Gary Rowett in the recent past, outlining the type of influence he could have at West Brom, and at 28, he is someone right at the peak of his powers, rather than a player who would come in with his best days behind him – he has won 3.5 aerial duels per game in the first two league games of this season.

Whether he sees Leeds a stronger choice because of their recent time in the top flight remains to be seen – Rangers are also a huge club who could compete for the Scottish Premiership title and in Europe – but the Baggies should do all they can to snap up a proven performer at this level.

Southampton: Russell Martin Targeting Move For "Excellent" Target

As Southampton look to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, manager Russell Martin has reportedly identified the target that he wants to focus on to close out his first transfer window as Saints boss.

So far this summer, the recently relegated side have welcomed four reinforcements, whilst bidding farewell to the likes of Romeo Lavia and James Ward-Prowse.

That number could stretch to five in the coming weeks, however, as Southampton turn to Leeds United.

What's the latest on Cody Drameh to Southampton?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Martin has set personally his sights on long-term target Cody Drameh. The right-back's Leeds contract expires next summer, making him a free agent, and the Southampton manager is even willing to wait until January to land him in a cut price deal.

Of course, from a Leeds perspective, selling to a potential promotion rival would be far from ideal, but if Drameh doesn't put pen to paper on a new deal then they could be left with no choice.

It remains to be seen just how much the Yorkshire club would demand for the fullback, though, with Transfermarkt's valuation sitting at €3.5m (£3m). The Saints could, of course, use the funds potentially gained through the sale of Che Adams, amid Everton's reported £12m bid for the striker.

Should Southampton sign Cody Drameh?

cody-drameh-leeds-united-luton-loan-academy-luke-ayling

After losing Livramento to Newcastle United, Southampton could undoubtedly do with a reinforcement at right-back, particularly a younger option to replicate Livramento's impact. And that's where Drameh could come in.

As things stand, Kyle Walker-Peters is Martin's first-choice option, but beyond that, the Saints lack depth on the right-hand side of their backline. Drameh, still only 21-years-old, enjoyed an excellent season last time out on loan at Luton Town, where he played a key role in helping the Hatters to gain promotion to the top flight.

Southampton will be hoping for the England U21 international to have a similar impact if they push ahead to secure his signature before the transfer window slammed shut.

Drameh also spent some time on loan at Cardiff City, where he earned plenty of praise, with former boss Steve Morrison saying, via Wales online: "He has been excellent. He was excellent in his first game, he was excellent at Barnsley, it was a right scrap but there were a few things when he was running back and making last-ditch tackles.

"He had a little bit of a down game, the Bristol City game, but outside of that he has been excellent. Having that break in the Liverpool game when he couldn't play, letting his body catch up on where it needs to be, now he is like a Duracell Bunny, isn't he? He just keeps going and going."

With that said, it's no surprise that Martin is a long-term admirer of Drameh, and if Southampton can finally welcome the fullback, they'll have themselves a solid addition to aid in the quest for promotion, damaging a rival in the process.

Leeds Boosted As 27-Year-Old Target Wants Elland Road Move

Leeds United have targeted a new international midfielder this summer and he appears to be keen on an Elland Road move, according to a promising update from journalist Ben Jacobs.

Will Leeds challenge for promotion?

The Whites found themselves relegated from the Premier League last season, having endured a tough campaign that saw them get through three different managers in Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce.

It meant that they have returned to the Championship for the first time since the 2019/20 season, and they are arguably seen as one of the favourites to secure promotion back to the top flight.

For that to happen, further signings could be needed before the summer transfer window comes to a close, with the addition of Joel Piroe from Swansea City a very exciting piece of business, among others.

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

Will Leeds sign Glen Kamara?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jacobs claimed that Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara, who has allegedly agreed terms with Leeds, prefers the idea of moving to the Whites this summer instead of staying put at Ibrox for another season.

He has been strongly linked with a switch to Elland Road and reports have claimed that a £5.5m deal was close, with Jacobs believing a transfer could be a "very decent deal".

"With Glen Kamara, that one also has some substance to it as well, in the region of £5m, which could be a bargain. I think the player would prefer the move to Leeds over staying at Rangers.

"And from a price point of view, it’s a very decent deal for Leeds who don’t want to spend a ton of money and can get a player that can help them get back up into the Premier League.

"There has been a little bit of interest from Middlesbrough as well, so there are a few Championship clubs in the mix, but at the time of recording this, nothing is necessarily done with Kamara yet."

Bringing in Kamara late on in the transfer window could be great business by Leeds, with the 27-year-old someone who has been such a key man for Rangers down the years.

He has made 193 appearances for the Scottish Premiership giants, anchoring the midfield expertly, and there is also the small matter of winning 52 caps for Finland. He won the league title with the Gers back in 2020/21, and tasted Scottish Cup glory the following campaign, and he would bring a wealth of quality and experience in the middle of the park at Elland Park.

At 27, Kamara is primed to come in and hit the ground running, not being daunted by playing for such a big club, given Rangers' reputation throughout history, and he could take Leeds' midfield up a level in the same way Piroe will in attack, having enjoyed an 89.4% pass completion rate in the Scottish Premiership last season.

The Finn has also been hailed as both "fantastic" and "excellent" by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in the past, during their time together at Ibrox as player and manager respectively, which further highlights the pedigree he possesses as a footballer.

West Ham: Irons Eyeing Marquee Striker Signing For Moyes

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has shared an update on West Ham United's transfer plans as they eye a marquee striker signing for manager David Moyes.

Who will West Ham sign?

The Irons officially confirmed their first major signing of the summer in Mexico international Edson Alvarez earlier this week, who now wears the number 19 shirt following his multi-million pound move from Ajax.

Partly due to the drawn-out saga surrounding former star midfielder Declan Rice, who eventually completed a £105 million switch to north London, West Ham were made to wait for their first piece of summer business.

James Ward-Prowse has also joined from Southampton, as the Hammers finally get up and moving.

Journalist Dean Jones, though, speaking to GiveMeSport recently, said that the Hammers could bring in as many as five new additions in total before deadline day.

"It feels like a good opportunity West Ham could take advantage of," said Jones on their links to Chelsea midfielder Trevoh Chalobah.

"I think he could actually survive at Chelsea, just about, but I also think he has bigger aspirations than that, and I’ve heard he has been open to listening to new opportunities.

"We’re looking at a massive month ahead for the Hammers, they will sign five players and have to find a way to make this all add up so they have a much stronger squad."

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

Replacing striker Gianluca Scamacca, who recently departed for Serie A side Atalanta after just one season, is another task to solve for Moyes, transfer chief Tim Steidten and sporting director Mark Noble.

According to reporter O'Rourke, writing for Football Insider, West Ham will "next prioritise the signing of a marquee striker" – with a "well-placed source" telling him they're scouring Europe and South America for options.

However, West Ham are also considering Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun, who has found his way on to their radar this summer following an exceptional loan spell at Reims last season.

How good is Folarin Balogun?

Stade Reims striker Folarin Balogun.

The young striker enjoyed a standout breakthrough campaign at Reims over 2022/2023, scoring a brilliant 21 goals and raising his price tag exponentially.

There have been suggestions that Arsenal could charge as much as £50 million for the services of Balogun, a price which may well be considered steep when taking into account his lack of English top flight experience.

However, the 22-year-old has been praised by Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, who called his forward a "really committed" and special player.

"I’m so happy for him,” Arteta said on Balogun's form last season.

“He’s a boy that has a really clear idea of what he wants to do with his career. He’s really ambitious, really committed and really brave.

“We discussed a lot before he made that move whether it was the right place to go and the other choices he had. He was so convinced. I’m really happy for him because he deserves what he’s getting.

“When you look at the numbers and what he is doing, it’s just incredible. It’s very rare to see that. But he’s got something special, that’s why we decided to give him a long-term contract and have faith in him and give him the long period that he needs now, because the loan he is having now is really different to the one he had before at Middlesbrough."

Patterson, Cowan claim draw for NSW

Victoria were denied their first win of the season as Ed Cowan, Kurtis Patterson and Sean Abbott helped NSW battle to a draw

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Nov-2017Ed Cowan drives•Getty Images

A charge from Ed Cowan at No. 9 and a middle-order resistance from Kurtis Patterson and Sean Abbott thwarted Victoria’s bid for their first win of the season, as New South Wales batted over 100 overs to cling to a draw in Sydney.Resuming from 2 for 46 on the last day after being set a 468-run target, NSW lost Maddinson to seamer Scott Boland. Abbott (47 off 171 balls) then went on to stitch a 74-run partnership with Patterson, who battled on at the other end. Patterson had found most of his runs through fours- 60 of his 61 runs came from boundaries. Chris Tremain broke the partnership with the wicket of Abbott, and Victoria made more inroads, quickly reducing NSW from 3 for 161 to 181 for 7, including the wicket of Patterson. With Victoria only three wickets away, Cowan and Steve O’Keefe grinded it out and played for time, with a 34-run partnership that lasted a little over 13.2 overs. Once O’Keefe was dismissed, Trent Copeland stuck it out with Cowan (40 off 99 balls) to avert a loss for NSW.”The plan was to park at one end, and with the tail it was to draw and take some singles to break up their [opposition’s] rhythm so that they can’t tactically do the same thing to us, and that seemed to work,” Cowan said about batting down the order on the day. “It was a flat wicket, but it wasn’t absolutely diabolical, so we prepared to stead better, and got through.”

O jogo
