White-ball contracts for West Indies players

A player contracted in the A category can now earn over USD 300,000, independent of domestic T20 deals, more than double of the previous highest-earning contracts

Colin Benjamin14-Dec-2017West Indies players will be offered more flexible and enhanced contracts, including exclusive retainers for Test and limited-overs cricket, according to a new Cricket West Indies policy. The highest-paid category will be for players who feature in Tests and ODIs, with a maximum retainer of over US $300,000 including match fees. The four-man selection panel, led by Courtney Browne, has shortlisted players for every category, which is expected to be made public soon. The new contract policy is one of CWI CEO Johnny Grave’s visions for the board, along with the previously-announced amnesty. The policy has three levels, and will initially last for nine months. The new contracts will be offered on July 1, 2018, at the same time as the domestic retainer contracts. The contracts have been split into three categories. Category A will comprise players who play predominantly Tests and ODIs. Category B will be for only Test players, while Category C will cover players featuring in only ODIs and T20s.ESPNcricinfo understands six players have been offered first batch of white-ball contracts (Category C): Carlos Brathwaite, Jason Mohammed, Evin Lewis, Rovman Powell, Ashley Nurse and Kesrick Williams.According to Grave, CWI will keep player remuneration private and confidential. He also highlighted that a player contracted in Category A can earn over US $300,000, independent of domestic T20 deals, while players in other contract categories will also stand to earn six-figure retainers.ESPNcricinfo believes the dollar value of the new retainers are more than double the previous highest-earning contracts that have been offered to players in the past three years following the abandoned 2014 tour to India.Under the previous contract arrangement, players were contracted for one year only. A category A contract was worth US $140,000, Category B US $120,000 and Category C US $100,000, with highly reduced match retainers that were redirected to pay domestic players in the revamped Professional Cricket League.Although CWI has not confirmed this, it is understood that individual match fees for ODIs and T20s (reduced after the 2014 abandonment to US $2500 and US $1500), will now be US $5000 and US $2500 per match respectively.Grave said that another significant decision CWI was taking was extending the existing Memorandum of Understanding with the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) by another year. “The first thing we did was extend the CWI-WIPA MoU by one year until the end of the 2019 World Cup cycle”, Grave told ESPNcricinfo. “While the overall aim was to create flexible contracts, when I realised the MoU was ending in 2018, but yet our television and sponsorship deals were ending in 2019, it made sense to extend it and link our major revenues with WIPA.”Grave further explained why only six players received Category C contracts, highlighting they were solely chosen by the selection panel. “I create paper work and numbers, selectors chose those to award contracts. Jimmy (Jimmy Adams, CWI director of cricket) and I weren’t involved in that.Getty Images”However the logic behind those is – Carlos, although he is not in ODI team, is our T20 captain, Jason [Mohammed] is the ODI vice-captain and Nurse has performed well this year in limited-overs cricket. Evin, Rovman and Kesrick are upcoming players. We want to offer incentives to want to play and be loyal to West Indies and not T20s leagues, which, for good reason, are already after their talents.”None of West Indies’ high-profile players have been offered contracts yet. Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Samuel Badree and Darren Sammy will all be offered pro-rata contracts based on their performances in the upcoming series in the short term.”Sammy and Bravos don’t play for West Indies at the moment, so we can’t offer contracts to people who are not in the team,” Grave said. “Pollard, Narine and Badree are only in the T20 team, (and) white-ball contracts are for those who play ODIs and T20s. It’s a view of the selectors that both Pollard and Narine have to show form in the Regional Super50 one-day competition to regain selection in the ODI team. If they play that tournament and perform I don’t see why they wouldn’t get recalled.”Obviously post amnesty, Gayle and Marlon played in England, if we had won the series and they had made lots of runs, they probably would have got contracts. So I think the selectors want to see them in New Zealand, Super50 and World Cup Qualifiers, but I suspect at some stage in 2018 they will get contracts given the new system,” Grave said.Grave is currently in Auckland to meet the West Indies players to explain the details of the various contracts and address their concerns. Both Grave and Adams agreed with the selectors that the main priority is for West Indies to qualify for the 2019 World Cup, and players will need to commit to that task ahead of T20 tournaments like the Big Bash League and the Pakistan Super League. The Big Bash League starts from December 19 and runs till February 4. The PSL will begin from February 22.The Regional Super50 falls between the BBL and the PSL – from January 31 to February 24, ending a week before the World Cup Qualifiers, scheduled to begin on March 2.Grave said CWI will be as flexible as possible in allowing players to play T20 Leagues, but the priority must be to play for West Indies. “Considering the importance of Qualifiers right now, that will take priority over a player’s individual needs, so I’d imagine if players seriously want to be part of World Cup plans they will play Super50.”According to Grave, the amnesty will soon lapse, and the players will be told about the minimum number of domestic matches they are expected to play in order to qualify to play for West Indies. “The amnesty will be replaced by a technical committee which will work out eligibility criteria,” Grave said. “The meeting probably will happen either before Christmas or early in the new year. And I would be surprised if they suggested anything else other than players have to play Super50.”

Tottenham: Postecoglou Could Sign His Own Odegaard In £50m "Diamond"

Tottenham Hotspur have bolstered their attacking ranks significantly this summer, but could be set to make one final acquisition to cement Ange Postecoglou’s already impressive start to life in north London…

Who else will Tottenham Hotspur sign?

With James Maddison having endeared himself to his new fanbase with ease, and Manor Solomon a fine backup option having occupied the bench, it could be easy to assume that their attacking business for this window was coming to an end.

However, the rumour mill has continued to turn, with reports circulating suggesting various offensive stars who could still make the move to N17, especially given the departure of Harry Kane, and the goalscoring vacancy he has left.

So, perhaps in an effort to create some additional chances to offset this absence, they could make their interest in Jeremy Doku tangible and fork up the £50m that Rennes are commanding.

How good is Jeremy Doku?

As a tricky wide man who has often deputised through the middle, it is clear that this Belgian magician has the skillset to both terrorise full-backs and bamboozle defensive midfielders wherever he is deployed.

In fact, such is his immense ability to forge chances for others, FBref even include Martin Odegaard on his list of ‘similar players’ despite their favoured positions being quite different.

This is likely due to the high volume of opportunities their excellence forges for teammates in the final third, with Doku using his speed and tricks whilst the Norway international prefers his technical prowess.

The latter allowed the Arsenal maestro to score 15 and assist eight in the Premier League last season, with his 7.35 average rating the highest of any Gunners player.

Such a figure was largely buoyed by his 2.1 key passes per game, which admittedly blows Doku’s figures out of the water.

He only managed one key pass per game last term in Ligue 1, yet his eight goal contributions allowed him to boast a 7.15 average rating in the French top flight, via Sofascore.

Then, as if to emphasise his starring qualities, when compared to other midfielders across Europe he sits in the top 1% for non-penalty goals, shot-creating actions, progressive carries and successful take-ons all per 90, via FBref.

His compatriot Kevin De Bruyne sought to laud his international teammate, noting:

“He is nimble, fast and he can dribble. Of course, he sometimes makes a mistake, but who doesn't? He is a diamond in the rough.”

Although Odegaard does not quite boast that same dynamism and ability to dance through numerous defenders, his sheer quality in possession is something which Doku will aspire to add to his game, although the foundation already seems very much in place.

Postecoglou would love to have another creator akin to Maddison within his side, in an effort to remove some of the focus away from the England international.

The former Leicester City maestro has enjoyed a fine start to the new campaign, recording two assists in their first two Premier League games; his presence seems to be underpinning the Australian’s revolution with a patented tireless work rate and elegance in possession.

Combining this with the explosive Doku, who mirrors the key man of their north London rivals, could help them bridge the gap that has opened up between them in recent years.

"Outstanding" Star Praised After 8/10 Arsenal Display

Declan Rice was "outstanding" for Arsenal as his team picked up a narrow victory in their most recent Premier League outing – though he appeared to forget who he was playing for after the game.

How good was Declan Rice vs Crystal Palace?

In the final game of the second round of league fixtures, the Gunners took on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and managed to come away with all three points.

It was some quick thinking by Gabriel Martinelli from a free-kick that opened up the game as Eddie Nketiah was fed in behind the Eagles' backline, only to be tripped by Sam Johnstone.

Referee David Coote pointed to the spot and Martin Odegaard made no mistake from 12 yards. This goal was enough to seal a 1-0 victory although the final stages of the game were complicated by a controversial red card to Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Mikel Arteta and co dug in deep, though, and came away with the win. In no small part, however, the victory was owed to the impressive efforts of new £105m midfielder Rice.

Indeed, as per Squawka, he finished the game with some colossal defensive stats, winning three duels, making one interception, one tackle and also winning possession back four times – while not giving away a single foul.

On top of that, he also contributed plenty on the ball, with 68 touches, a 90 per cent pass accuracy, seven passes into the final third, and once chance created.

Journalist Henry Winter was certainly impressed as he called Rice "outstanding" and this was further backed up by his 8/10 player rating in The Sun.

In that article, Joshua Jones added: "A superb performance in the middle of the park, running the show for large parts from a slightly deeper position but making lots of well-timed runs forward.

"It will take a long time and plenty of silverware to repay his £105million price tag – but more showings like this one in South London will certainly go a long way to doing exactly that."

Rice's highlights have emerged online and they are an absolute masterclass in how to dominate the middle of the park – you can watch them below.

Why does Rice wear 41?

After completing his major move to the Gunners, Rice opted to continue wearing the No. 41 jersey which was given to him as a youngster at West Ham. He explained the origins of this when speaking to Gary Neville in 2022 on an episode of The Overlap (via Goal).

He said: "It was just a number I was given in the academy by the kitman. It's stayed with me since and, to be honest, I had this conversation with my dad – regardless of what happens in my career I might stay with the 41.

"I think 'Rice 41' has a nice ring to it, I've grown up playing in it and I'm a bit superstitious about things like that… I don't know if I changed to a new number if it would hamper my performances, I don't know!"

West Ham are still very close to Rice, clearly, and after his stellar display against Palace on Monday night, he appeared to get mixed up about who he was playing for these days.

When talking on Sky Sports' MNF (via Twitter), he had a big slip of the tongue, saying: "Even here at West Ham, the lads are always on to me to shoot more."

While on the same show, he was able to at least joke about no longer being the Premier League's most expensive player after Chelsea recently completed a £115m deal to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

He was asked: "Can't believe Caicedo has broken your record already though Declan, you can't be happy with that?"

Laughing, Rice joked back: "I had it up on the wall for two weeks, it's come down already!"

Fulham Make Duvan Zapata Approach

Fulham have made an approach over a move for Atalanta forward Duvan Zapata after a transfer elsewhere fell through.

Are Fulham signing a striker?

Marco Silva’s side have endured a mixed start to the new Premier League season after a 1-0 opening weekend win over Everton was followed by a 3-0 home defeat to Brentford.

The Cottagers have been without star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic after his £50m move to Saudi Arabia side Al-Hilal, with the forward netting a header on his debut.

Fulham, as a result, appear to be on the hunt to replace Mitrovic before the September 1 deadline despite bringing in Raul Jimenez from Wolves and have been linked with a move for Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun.

However, the USA international appears to be edging closer to a move to AS Monaco. Another player who had been linked was Juventus’ Moise Kean, however, Silva has squashed that rumour while also laying out his concerns late in the window.

“No, Moise Kean is not a solution for us. I don’t like to talk about players that are not our players. Moise Kean is a player from Juventus. But I can confirm he is not the player we are looking for.”

“I will not answer about Mitrovic because it would be a lack of respect to the players we have in our squad right now. He understood my ideas and executed that.

“With more time it would be less difficult. Right now, at this moment in the mark, it is really difficult. This is the problem when you leave things for the last week of the market. We are not in the best position.”

The club’s search for a striker now appears to have led to interest in Zapata.

According to The Daily Mail, Fulham have been in contact over a transfer for Zapata by approaching Atalanta. The report states that the striker was set to make the move to AS Roma on loan but expressed doubts and the deal fell through at the 11th hour.

It is believed that Zapata is leaning towards staying at Atalanta, however, Fulham appear to be keen and have made their first move.

Who is Duvan Zapata?

Zapata is an out-and-out centre-forward who has plied the majority of his club career in Italy. The 32-year-old has turned out for Napoli, Udinese, Sampdoria and Atalanta over the last 10 years, making 283 appearances in Serie A, scoring 108 goals.

A Colombia international, Zapata is known for his physicality, with former teammate Papu Gomez describing the forward as a “beast” who is “like a train”.

“Zapata's shorts look like underwear, he is so big.

“Sometimes I don't even want to get close to him in a match because he's a beast and it hurts. When he is feeling good he's like a train – you throw the ball forward and 'ciao!'”

A proven and experienced goalscorer in Italy, a move for Zapata could be one to keep an eye on in the final days of the window, but with time ticking, you’d expect Fulham will be in contact with a number of targets over potential moves to Craven Cottage.

West Ham Should Sign "Wonderful" £45m Phenom Alongside Palmer

West Ham United are searching deep into their scout reports to find a new attacking midfielder.

The news comes in light of the Irons potentially losing another of their prized assets after Declan Rice's exit earlier this summer.

Who will replace Lucas Paqueta at West Ham?

In an article by The Guardian, West Ham are said to be tracking Mohammed Kudus and Cole Palmer, with Lucas Paqueta keen to join Manchester City.

Also according to the report, the Irons are ‘monitoring’ Nottingham Forest phenom Brennan Johnson, who is also a target for Tottenham Hotspur.

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

It is understood it may take a fee of £45m to convince Forest to sell the winger.

Who should Johnson replace Paqueta?

Born in Nottingham, and part of the Forest Academy since 2009, the 5 foot 10 livewire has evolved into one of the club’s brightest and most productive assets.

Johnson’s first professional goal for Forest arrived in a 1-1 draw against fierce local rivals Derby in August 2021, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Brennan-Johnson-West-Ham-target

The forward ended that season as Forest’s top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions, including strikes in both semi-final legs of their successful play-off campaign. As a result, Johnson was named the EFL Championship Young Player of the Season and was rewarded with a new four-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2026.

Johnson continued this impressive form and was an instrumental component of a Forest side that retained their top-flight status.

Last term, across both windows, Steve Cooper’s side signed 30 players, and despite this monumental influx of new faces, Johnson remained an imperative figure. He was the club’s second-top scorer with eight goals as his pace, directness, and effervescence has been troublesome for Premier League sides.

His importance was strongly recognised by Cooper, who said: “Just imagine where we'd be without him. I love working with Brennan.

“He's so committed to be the best he can be and doing well for this club that he absolutely loves and also he's got a talent we need to nurture because it's really helpful to us. He's super talented.”

His national team manager Robert Page described the Welshman as “wonderful” and feels he plays with “freedom.”

From a West Ham perspective, he could be a crucial addition as the club prepares for a third consecutive season of European football and look to source some more attacking depth.

Last term, Johnson appeared as a centre-forward and left-winger, as this positional versatility is a trait that will highly interest David Moyes. Another player who mirrors this attribute is the aforementioned Palmer, who the Irons are looking at to cover for Paqueta’s impending departure.

Cole-Palmer

For the Manchester City senior side, the youngster has made 40 appearances, and appeared in an array of positions, predominantly as a left-winger or just behind the striker. Having scored against Arsenal in the Community Shield, he looks poised for a breakout year, and he could well do that alongside someone as exciting as Johnson.

Although Palmer has started just 12 games in all competitions, the 21-year-old ranks in the top 10% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for shot-creating actions per 90, as well as the best 1% for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90. This, then, has the potential to be a devastating combo for West Ham this season.

Indeed, a season of regular football at a top-flight club would be the perfect way to unlock Palmer’s full potential as he could form a scintillating, interchangeable frontline with Johnson.

Paine delays travelling to Melbourne

Australia’s wicketkeeper Tim Paine has not travelled to Melbourne as planned on Friday and instead remained in Tasmania for personal reasons. His father-in-law is reportedly unwell, although Paine is currently still expected to play in the fourth Ashes Test.”Tim Paine has not travelled with the squad to Melbourne due to personal reasons,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said. “An update on his travel plans will be provided in due course.”There are no plans as yet to call up anyone on standby, though the reserve batsman Pete Handscomb is also a capable wicketkeeper and did the job for Australia during the recent ODI series in India. Alternative options include previous incumbents Matthew Wade and Peter Nevill, or South Australia’s Alex Carey.Australia have deployed only 12 players in the three Tests so far, with Mitchell Marsh replacing Handscomb in Perth, although they may also have to make a decision about Mitchell Starc, who suffered a bruised heel as the Ashes were secured at the WACA earlier this week.

Wolves Handed Massive Boost Over 26-Year-Old’s Future

Wolves may be having a tought time of things at the moment, but they have received a brilliant piece of news regarding one Wanderers player.

How old is Max Kilman?

After enjoying an improved 2022/23 season last time around after Julen Lopetegui's arrival, and making an immediate impression as manager, there was some positivity in the air earlier this summer, with a good campaign potentially on the horizon.

Instead, the wheels have come off fairly dramatically, with Lopegetui leaving his post and Wolves arguably looking like the new Premier League campaign could be a struggle. Their opening game of the season comes away to Manchester United on Monday night, but they don't look in a good place ahead of the game, even though Gary O'Neil has come in as boss, following an impressive spell in charge of Bournemouth.

Having lost Ruben Neves during the summer transfer window, it is imperative that Wanderers keep hold of other important figures, with Max Kilman undoubtedly one of them.

Now 26 years of age, the Englishman has been a hugely impressive performer over a consistent period of time, starting 37 out of 38 league games last term, and making 107 appearances for Wolves in total. His current deal expires in the summer of 2026, and while that is still some time away, it looks like an extension is on the cards.

Max Kilman of Wolves.

Is Max Kilman staying at Wolves?

Writing on X, The Telegraph's John Percy dropped a huge update regarding Kilman's future, claiming he is putting pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Molineux, despite interest from reigning Serie A champions Napoli:

"Some good news for Wolves after a difficult few weeks: captain Max Kilman is signing a new 5-year contract and will be staying at Molineux. Official confirmation expected soon. Serie A champions Napoli made a £30m bid for the centre-back last month."

This is a massive boost for Wolves at a time when they need one, with retaining Kilman's services for more years to come arguably as important as any new signing that comes in.

The centre-back is approaching the peak years of his career and has been one of the first names on Wanderers' team sheet, so knowing that he has committed his future into his 30s is something that will be celebrated within the fanbase.

Kilman has been hailed as "absolutely unbelievable" by journalist Liam Keen in the recent past, and if he enjoys a strong 2023/24 campaign, he could even stake a claim to be part of England's squad at Euro 2024 next summer.

For Wolves to stay up this season, they may need their star central defender to step up and enjoy possibly his best year yet at Molineux, as he continues to grow as a player as each season passes, becoming more of a leader at the heart of the defence at the same time.

The importance of tying Kilman down to a new deal cannot be downplayed and the hope is that he is still in the starting lineup week in, week out when his contract eventually runs out in the future.

Man Utd: Ten Hag Could Secure Instant Mount Upgrade With "Elite" £34m Target

Manchester United have started their 2023/24 Premier League campaign off rather meekly. They were lucky to escape with all three points against Wolverhampton Wanderers last week before going down 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend.

Three points from six and just one goal scored wasn’t the start Erik ten Hag was anticipating, and he will be even more concerned by some of the performances, particularly from new signing Mason Mount.

The £60m summer arrival from Chelsea was expected to improve the United midfield.

Against Spurs, however, he was almost non-existent, having completed only 15 accurate passes and taken as few as 27 touches – even Andre Onana recorded more passes and touches, signifying how poorly he played as a creative-minded midfielder that makes things happen in the engine room.

Could this perhaps give the Dutchman a licence to dive back into the transfer market and lure another midfielder to Old Trafford?

The club have recently been on a scouting mission to France…

Will Manchester United make more signings?

United have shown interest in a few players during the final weeks of the transfer window, most notably defenders.

Frenchman Jean Clair-Todibo has been linked with a move and the Red Devils even sent scouts to monitor his performance for OGC Nice a couple of weeks ago.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

This wasn’t the only player that United were keeping tabs on, however.

According to Get French Football News, OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram was also being closely monitored in light of a potential move to England.

He wouldn’t break the bank either, with the Ligue 1 outfit valuing one of their prized assets at around €40m (£34m) and could Ten Hag act swiftly and bring him to Manchester in the coming days?

What could Khephren Thuram offer Manchester United?

With Rasmus Hojlund injured and Mount failing to showcase his true abilities so far, Ten Hag’s summer recruitment may soon come under criticism, with just Onana enjoying a solid start.

Thuram has enjoyed an impressive spell with Nice since joining in 2019, making 140 appearances and last season was his most productive yet, registering ten goal contributions – two goals and eight assists – across 50 appearances. This is made even better by the fact he typically operated as a defensive midfielder.

Khephren Thuram

Mount was deployed in a deeper role against Spurs alongside Casemiro, yet it clearly didn’t work out and Thuram could certainly be an instant upgrade on the former Chelsea gem in this position.

Indeed, last season, the Frenchman registered more league goal contributions (six v five), a higher pass success rate (85.1% v 75.2%), tackles won (25 v 19) and interceptions (38 v eight), suggesting that he offers more across both attacking and defensive metrics.

Thuram even ranked in the top 4% when compared to positional peers for progressive carries per 90 (3.4) and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.65).

Mount on the other hand failed to rank in the top 40% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.78) while ranking in the top 17% for progressive carries per 90 (2.24), indicating the difference between the two players.

Journalist Zach Lowy even dubbed him as an “elite ball carrier” amid Liverpool’s interest in the youngster earlier in the summer transfer window.

For a fee of just £34m, Ten Hag could sign a player who won't just be part of his future plans, but a talent that could force his way into the starting XI straight away and be an instant Mount upgrade in the process.
