Leeds: Bielsa sold a player for £7m, now he’s worth 88% less

Former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa should be fondly remembered by the supporters at Elland Road due to the excellent work he did during his time at the club.

The former Marseille head coach, who is the current national team manager of Uruguay, enjoyed a terrific spell in Yorkshire as he joined them in the Championship and left with the side competing as a Premier League outfit.

Ex-sporting director Victor Orta and the 68-year-old boss worked together to secure promotion to the top flight within his first two seasons at the helm, which was followed by a ninth-placed finish in the top division.

Whilst some may look back at the signings Bielsa made, with the most expensive highlighted below, and how successful they were, the experienced tactician also struck gold with his decisions on who to cash in on.

One sale the Argentine boss hit the jackpot with was centre-forward Kemar Roofe's move to Belgian side Anderlecht in the summer of 2019.

Former Whites owner Andrea Radrizzani revealed that the club needed to bring in money through sales that year in order to avoid a points deduction from the league due to their financial situation.

This means that Bielsa's hand was somewhat forced with Roofe but there were other assets at Elland Road and his decision to cash in on the Jamaica international turned out to be an excellent one.

How many goals did Kemar Roofe score for Leeds?

The energetic attacker spent three full seasons with the Yorkshire-based outfit and plundered 33 goals in 122 appearances across all competitions in total.

He arrived at Leeds off the back of an outstanding 2015/16 campaign with Oxford United in League Two as the talented ace produced an eye-catching 25 goals and 12 assists in 49 matches, which included 17 goals and ten assists in 40 league outings.

However, the English-born star struggled for form at the top end of the pitch during his debut season with Leeds. Roofe scored four goals and provided seven assists in 49 games throughout the 2016/17 term.

Former Leeds striker Kemar Roofe.

The former West Brom academy prospect was then able to find his feet the following campaign with a record of 14 goals and five assists in 39 clashes, which included 11 goals in 36 Championship outings.

His final season with Leeds came in the 2018/19 campaign, which was Bielsa's first year at Elland Road and ended in a play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County. He contributed with 15 goals and two assists in 34 matches in total, which included 15 league goals in 33 appearances.

Roofe was Leeds' top-scorer in the Championship with his 15 league strikes, which was six more than the nine that Patrick Bamford managed after his move from Middlesbrough during the 2018 summer transfer window.

How much did Leeds sell Roofe for?

Bielsa and Leeds reportedly cashed in on the reliable number nine for a significant fee of £7m as Vincent Kompany's Anderlecht secured his services.

He only had one year left to run on his contract at Elland Road and was offered an attractive wage hike by the Pro League side, while the Whites were well compensated for a Championship club selling a player who would have been a free agent the following summer.

Former Leeds striker Kemar Roofe.

His departure left a hole to fill at the top end of the pitch for Bielsa but it also presented Bamford with the opportunity to stake a claim for his place in the side, which is exactly what he did.

The former Chelsea prodigy went on to score 16 goals in 45 Championship appearances, which was seven more than any of his teammates, as Leeds won the title and earned promotion to the Premier League.

Where is Roofe now?

Roofe is currently playing for Scottish giants Rangers at the age of 30, having joined the Light Blues from Anderlecht in the summer of 2020.

The striker scored seven goals in 16 appearances in all competitions for the Belgian outfit before his switch to Scotland after just one season with Kompany.

He has been a fairly prolific scorer for the Gers throughout his three-and-a-bit years in Glasgow to date, with 37 goals in 86 matches to date.

However, his fitness record has been a huge issue over the course of his stay in Scotland. Roofe has suffered seven separate injury problems and missed a staggering 84 competitive games since the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

This means that the former Leeds forward has almost been absent for as many matches as he has played for Rangers over the last three years, which shows that the 30-year-old attacker has been a liability with his lack of consistent availability.

How much is Roofe worth now?

At the time of writing, FootballTransfers have placed Roofe's Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at £850k (€1m), showing that his market value has plummeted since his departure from Elland Road.

The experienced finisher's xTV of £850k is 88% less than the £7m that Leeds raked in for his services in the summer of 2019.

Roofe, who was described as a "Duracell bunny" by former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, has been a fine goalscorer for the Scottish giants but his injury issues have caused too many problems for him to be worth anywhere near as much as the Whites received for him four years ago.

His team are not able to rely on him to play regular football as he has not played more than 21 league games in a single season since the 2018/19 campaign with Leeds.

Therefore, Bielsa hit the jackpot with his move to sell the ex-Oxford United star in 2019 as his injury issues have caught up with him and his market value has deteriorated drastically, which suggests that the English outfit cashed in on him at the perfect time.

Roofe's exit also allowed Bamford to thrive in the final third, as aforementioned, and fire the Yorkshire side to the Premier League, which suggests that they did not miss the Jamaican marksman's talents on the pitch.

Newcastle could make 2024 move for "unbelievable" Premier League star

Newcastle United could make a surprise swoop for a British attacker in 2024, and a reliable journalist has revealed that he's already playing in the Premier League.

Who have Newcastle signed recently?

Over the summer, PIF and Eddie Howe were busy bolstering their ranks with five fresh faces in the form of Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, Yankuba Minteh and Lewis Hall who is the only one to join on loan, and there were also plenty of departures.

With regards to outgoings, Allan Saint-Maximin, Chris Wood and Karl Darlow were the three permanent exits, whilst the club also sanctioned temporary switches for the likes of Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden, as per Transfermarkt.

The St. James’ Park outfit will already be assessing their options ahead of the next window and one player that they could set their sights on is West Ham United’s Jarrod Bowen, who after establishing himself as David Moyes’ top-performing offensive player so far this season, via WhoScored, has caught the eye of the hierarchy.

According to Football Transfers, Liverpool have earmarked the right-winger as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah should he eventually leave for Saudi Arabia, and if the following update is to be believed, Jurgen Klopp could face competition for the 26-year-old.

Are Newcastle signing Jarrod Bowen?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs claimed that Newcastle could make a move for Bowen next year, but made it clear that he won't come cheap, alongside the fact that they aren't alone in their pursuit. He said:

"Let's see whether the Liverpool links develop. I think the only thing Liverpool will look at as far as Bowen, in a year's time, is just the fact that he will be 27 years of age, and by next summer, he will actually be pushing pretty close to 28, because he's born in December. So, he'll turn 27 in only a few months, and by the time we get to next summer, if you sign him in August, you've got a 28-year-old.

"So, given the money that West Ham would want for Bowen, and given the profile of the player age wise, that might be a negative working against him in some ways. So I think it's too early to be making definitive connections between Liverpool and Bowen.

"But one thing's for sure, he's one to watch next summer in 2024, because there will be plenty of clubs with Champions League football that take a very close look at the player. I think Newcastle is perhaps another club to keep an eye on as well in 12 months time."

West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen.

How many goals has Jarrod Bowen scored for West Ham?

Since putting pen to paper at West Ham, Bowen has racked up 75 contributions (43 goals and 32 assists) in 163 appearances which has seen him dubbed "unbelievable" by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, so should he put pen to paper in the future, it would be a huge coup for Newcastle.

The England international, who earns £60k-per-week, has also recorded 13 shots so far this season which is more than any of his fellow teammates, via FBRef, highlighting his desire to hit the back of the net, even if the ball doesn’t always manage to do so.

The Irons’ left-footed ace, who has the versatility to operate in seven various positions over the pitch, additionally has a great record when visiting the northeast having made three assists against the Magpies, so if he can achieve this when part of the away side, imagine what he’d be capable of wearing a black and white striped shirt.

Cost £0, now worth £16m: Everton struck gold with “outstanding” brute

Everton supporters have been through the ringer through the course of the previous two seasons and unless Sean Dyche leads them on a solid winning run, they could face yet another relegation battle.

The Toffees have finished 16th and 17th during the last two Premier League campaigns and there has been a variety of reasons behind the poor performances and lack of confidence at the club. Both Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard were far from ideal choices to lead the Merseyside outfit, while their records in the transfer market were underwhelming to say the least.

Players such as Neal Maupay, Salomon Rondon and Dele Alli didn’t exactly set the world on fire, and it is perhaps no surprise that Lampard and Benitez failed to make their mark in charge of the club.

In saying that, there have been a few hidden gems that have moved to Everton since the summer of 2021 which have proven to be solid signings and will play become key members of the squad in the coming years.

Nathan Patterson and Dwight McNeil are talented youngsters who could become integral members of the first team for the foreseeable future, yet it is a signing made by Lampard that could potentially turn into a lucrative piece of business by the Toffees…

How much did James Tarkowski cost Everton?

After escaping relegation by the skin of their teeth at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, Lampard entered the summer transfer window with grand designs on how to bolster his squad so that this wouldn’t occur again.

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

Amadou Onana looked like a promising arrival, joining from Lille, while James Garner signed from Manchester United and McNeil arrived from Burnley and these all looked like positive signings. James Tarkowski also made the move to Merseyside, and it was arguably their finest signing that summer, as he joined for nothing after he left Burnley following the expiration of his contract.

Director of football Kevin Thelwell praised the player when he joined, saying: “We are delighted to welcome a player of James’ quality to Everton and believe he will be an excellent addition to our squad. The statistics show that James has consistently been one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders in recent years. Added to his playing attributes, his excellent leadership skills and experience will be a huge benefit, too.

“James is a player I’ve admired for many years and Frank was very keen to bring him to the Club. We look forward to him being a highly-valued member of our squad next season and in the years to come.”

This was a player who had made 219 appearances for Burnley and had spent the last six seasons in the top flight, gaining plenty of experience in the process.

The move has since gone on the become a very shrewd signing by the Toffees, especially considering his market value has risen due to his performances over the previous 12 months and this could potentially generate Everton a vast profit should they be tempted to sell him.

What is James Tarkowski’s market value now?

When the centre-back moved to Everton in July 2022, his market value was only €8.4m (£7.2m), yet over the next 12 months, this value would rise sharply.

Indeed, it didn’t even take a month for Tarkowski to be valued at €29.8m (£26m) according to Football Transfers and while this has dropped slightly in the months since, the defender is now currently worth €19m (£16m), and this represents an impressive increase from when he made the move to Everton in 2022.

Why is James Tarkowski worth this much?

Although the Toffees conceded 57 goals last season and finished in 17th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone, there were a couple of bright sparks throughout the season and Tarkowski was one of them.

The 30-year-old played a total of 40 games across all competitions during his maiden season on Merseyside, and he certainly proved to the supporters why the club were keen on signing him in the first place.

James Tarkowski

Tarkowski ranked third across the Everton squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.2) during the 2022/23 season while also ranking third for accurate passes per game (34.6) and interceptions per game (1.3), clearly indicating that he settled in well at the club and was a positive figure as they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

Not only impressive among his teammates, Tarkowski also showcased his abilities when compared to his positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues. Indeed, the defender ranked in the top 1% for blocks per 90 (2.46), the top 8% for aerials won per 90 (3.16) and rather remarkably the top 1% for touches in the opposition penalty area per 90 (2.33), indicating that he is among the finest on the continent over a wide range of metrics.

The former Burnley defender has continued this rich vein of form into the current season, topping the pile for Sofascore rating (7.33) and interceptions per game (1.7), while also ranking third for clearances per game (3.0) and fourth for accurate passes per game (35.6), emerging into a player Dyche can count on as he looks to lead them into the top half of the table.

Dyche knows all about his qualities, having managed him when they were both at Burnley and the 52-year-old has even lauded the defender as “outstanding” in the past.

Everton haven’t had much joy to cheer about with regard to success in the transfer market over the previous few years and this has arguably led to them underperforming and battling relegation on a consistent basis.

Tarkowski has proven to one of their few shining lights over the last year or so and his performances possibly allowed the Toffees to retain their Premier League status and without him performing heroics at the heart of the defence, they may have found themselves in the second tier this term.

There is still a long way to go in the current campaign, but Everton have no doubt hit the jackpot on Tarkowski, and they will hope he can give them the boost they need to push into the top half under Dyche.

Glamorgan dream of an upset after Usman Khawaja hundred

A century on debut for the Australian meant Warwickshire have a stiff chase on the final day if they are to continue their winning run

Jon Culley at Edgbaston11-Jun-20181:52

Surrey set the pace in Division One

ScorecardUntil he turned up in Cardiff last week to be introduced as a Glamorgan player, Usman Khawaja’s knowledge of Wales did not extend much beyond the sitcom Gavin and Stacey. It has become one of his favourite TV shows, so much so that top of the list of places he wants to see while in the principality is not Cardiff Castle or the Snowdonia National Park but Barry Island. It is quite likely Wales will take to him, too, after he marked his Glamorgan debut with a century that has given them a chance of achieving their first Championship win at Edgbaston since 1988, when the sometime England fast bowler Greg Thomas took six wickets and Warwickshire, needing 194 to win on the final afternoon, were bowled out five runs short. In doing so Khawaja emulated his compatriot, Shaun Marsh, whose place in the side he has taken, who also made a hundred on his county debut in April. They will play together in the Vitality T20 Blast later in the summer. For now, Marsh is preparing for Australia’s ODI joust with England, which begins on Wednesday. It was Marsh’s call-up that led Glamorgan to ask Khawaja if he wouldn’t mind playing in two or three Championship matches ahead of the T20, an arrangement he is more than happy with, given there is an Ashes tour looming in 2019.Not that he is unfamiliar with English conditions. Indeed, he has made centuries here before, two for Derbyshire – Glamorgan’s opponents in Swansea next week – and one for Lancashire. But he does not have one in a Test match in England, which is another thing on his to-do list following his 171 against Joe Root’s hapless boys at Sydney in January. His 125 here, spanning almost three-and-a-half hours on a slow, used pitch now effectively four days old, ensured that the good work of openers Nick Selman and Jack Murphy against the new ball on the second evening was not wasted, even after Selman had clipped Keith Barker straight to short midwicket in only the fifth over of the morning. It might have been. Murphy added only eight to his overnight score and both Connor Brown and Owen Morgan went cheaply but Khawaja found an ally at last in Chris Cooke, his captain in this game in the absence of an injured Michael Hogan. They shared a partnership of 115 that ended with his own dismissal, lbw playing back to Jeetan Patel, whose offspin to that point he had countered pretty well. There has not been much turn so far and Josh Poysden, who did so well to take five wickets in the first innings, was wicketless this time. Yet it is a surface that needs to be treated with respect, nonetheless, one on which a batsman can become tentative. Not so Khawaja, who paced his innings evenly, scoring his first fifty off 58 balls with seven fours, his second off 63 with another seven.Once he had gone and Cooke followed, gloving a catch as he tried to withdraw the bat against the impressive 18-year-old quick Henry Brookes, the innings did fall away yet Warwickshire, needing precisely 100 more runs than were required 30 years ago, were left with a tall task to extend their winning run and those padded up in the dressing room will have been pleased to see Will Rhodes and Dom Sibley negotiate 13 overs to stumps unscathed.

SLC elections postponed, again

A court of appeal found that SLC had failed to hold a mandatory 14-day nomination period following the announcement of the election date

AFP

Sri Lanka Cricket’s elections have been postponed by at least a month after a court of appeal found that the board had flouted election protocol. The move brings into sharp focus the extent of government interference in SLC affairs, with elections having once already been postponed on similar grounds. This latest postponement is the result of a petition filed by SLC presidential candidate Nishantha Ranatunga against the legitimacy of incumbent president Thilanga Sumathipala, on the basis of the latter’s familial ties to the gaming industry. While the court refused to grant the petitioner’s request to hold the elections without Sumathipala, it did not dismiss the petition out of hand. In the deliberation, it found that SLC had failed to hold a mandatory 14-day nomination period following the announcement of the election date – something which SLC had seemingly been granted permission for by the country’s sports ministry less than two weeks prior – and as such ordered elections be stayed, with the matter set to be taken up by the court again on June 14.Elections had initially been announced for May 19 and a nomination deadline set for April 27, but were postponed after Sri Lanka’s sports ministry declared that SLC had violated the country’s sports law in the appointing of an election committee. Sports law dictates that the committee should be appointed on the floor of an Extraordinary General Meeting in front of SLC general membership, whereas SLC had made the appointment at an Executive Committee (ExCo) meeting.SLC however contested that then Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera had granted special permission in this regard, but after Jayasekera resigned from his post on April 11 his replacement, Faiszer Mustapha, called on SLC to follow protocol. As such SLC appointed a new election committee at an EGM on May 19, but with the board constitutionally bound to wait 40 days from the announcement of an election to hold elections, SLC petitioned the sports ministry to waive the waiting period as the nomination period had already taken place. The sports ministry, following consultation with the country’s Attorney General, concurred and allowed elections to be held on May 31.However, in the latest twist, Sri Lanka’s court of appeal has effectively nullified the sports ministry’s and the AG’s decision. While a new election date is being decided, the state of SLC leadership is up in the air. The present board’s term ends on May 31; for them to continue the sports minister will either have to grant an extension to the board’s term limit or appoint an interim committee.

Possible record transfer: Man Utd make first move to sign new "warrior"

Manchester United may have splashed the cash in the summer, however, it looks as if the club are eyeing up a possible record transfer for a new player in 2024.

Latest Man Utd transfer update

The Red Devils brought in eight new players over the summer, including the likes of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, however, it hasn’t had the desired impact Erik ten Hag may have been hoping for, sitting in 10th position with the club losing four of their opening eight Premier League games. Meanwhile, in the Champions League, United have also lost back-to-back fixtures against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

However, with the January window fast approaching, those at Old Trafford will be able to bolster their squad once again with new signings, and by the looks of things, a new talented midfielder appears to be on their wishlist.

Sport Witness relayed a Joao Neves transfer update in the last 48 hours, where Man Utd were named. Benfica don’t want to talk about selling their player as of now and are protected by a €120m (£103.6m) release clause in Neves’ contract, a clause which looks like it will need to be triggered in any possible transfer.

The report claims that the competition is huge for the midfielder’s services and that the Red Devils, and by extension current owners the Glazers, have ‘made a move’ to show their interest in a possible deal.

Benfica's Joao Neves

Who is Joao Neves?

The player is just 19 years of age and has enjoyed a phenomenal rise in 2023, with Neves’ market value increasing from €500,000 to a career-high €20m. (Joao Neves transfer value)

Neves is primarily a holding midfielder but can play in a central or attacking midfield role and has broken through into Benfica’s senior side over the past year. In total, the Portugal U21 international has now made 31 first-team appearances for Benfica, contributing to three goals in the process. (Transfermarkt Joao Neves stats)

He has also been labelled as a “warrior” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and with plenty of clubs circling alongside his huge release clause, Neves appears to be a potential star in the making.

However, should United want to secure Neves’ services, possibly over the next 12 months, they may need to fork out a club. record transfer fee, surpassing the £90m deal for Paul Pogba back in 2016. (Man Utd record signings – Transfermarkt)

It looks like a transfer for Neves could be one to keep an eye on, but as is Man Utd’s current FFP situation, something which may affect any big money deals in the near future.

West Ham: Moyes could unleash dream JWP partner in £125k-p/w ‘machine’

West Ham United turn their attention away from the Premier League tonight as they host Serbian side FK TSC Backa Topola at the London Stadium in the Europa League.

What's the latest West Ham team news?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, manager David Moyes confirmed that there are no fresh injury issues for the Hammers to contend with ahead of this match.

However, defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez is suspended and unavailable for selection after he was sent off against Union Berlin for Ajax in the competition last season.

West Ham are coming into the game off the back of a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend and the Scottish head coach may look to rotate his squad to offer players an opportunity to impress. One of those may well be Danny Ings.

Will Danny Ings start against Backa Topola?

One player who should be unleashed from the start of this clash is English centre-forward Ings, in order to provide him with a chance to play ahead of Michail Antonio.

The former Southampton star has made four appearances as a substitute in the league so far this season and this Europa League game is the perfect time to bring him in for his first start.

He could strike up an excellent relationship with James Ward-Prowse at the top end of the pitch as their pair already have plenty of experience alongside each other from their time on the south coast.

West Ham striker Danny Ings.

Ings and his compatriot played 88 matches together with the Saints and assisted each other for five goals combined between them in that time.

The 31-year-old marksman has only scored three goals in 26 matches for West Ham in all competitions since his move to the club in January but his form for Southampton in the past suggests that the potential is there for him to be a lethal scorer.

He was once lauded as a "goal machine" by journalist Joe Prince-Wright and the £125k-per-week ace lived up to that tag during his time at St. Mary's as the number nine racked up 46 goals in 100 matches.

Ings plundered an outstanding 34 Premier League goals across the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns for the Saints and Ward-Prowse could help him to rediscover his touch in front of goal.

How many chances has Ward-Prowse created this season?

The England international has enjoyed a terrific start to his Hammers career and has created five chances in four Premier League games so far this season.

Ward-Prowse has provided his teammates with two 'big chances' and assisted three goals – two more than any other player – in that time to go along with his two strikes against Manchester City and Brighton.

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

The central midfielder arrived at the London Stadium after he created nine 'big chances' and made 76 key passes across 38 top-flight matches for Southampton last term, which shows that he is capable of splitting open the opposition's defence on a regular basis.

Therefore, Ward-Prowse could be pivotal to ensuring that Ings is able to get back to his best and that is why the pair should both start tonight in this Europa League clash.

The English maestro could provide the former Aston Villa marksman with the service that he needs to get back on the scoresheet and Moyes should unleash them both.
