    WHAT HAPPENED?

Blues fans have been critical of the performances of both England international Sterling and his Chelsea team-mate Sanchez during the first half against Leicester in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Sterling was given a golden opportunity to double Chelsea's lead from the penalty spot in the 26th but failed to convert. While Sanchez looked uneasy throughout when tested with crosses. After missing a one one one, Sterling would at least go on to play a major role in the second goal for the hosts, as he teed up Cole Palmer just before half-time.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Fans have not held back in terms of their reaction to the penalty miss and performance as a whole, as @MrGeorgeBenson wrote: "Sterling and Sanchez are not Chelsea level footballers, and that is me speaking about the ‘new Chelsea level'."

Another fan (@nickverlaney) said: "Is Sanchez trying to create a highlight reel by missing every cross in spectacular fashion?"

While @ryanadsett added: "Sanchez reloading some Leicester memories." Which featured an error he made during his time at Brighton and Hove Albion against the Foxes.

    WHAT THE PUNDITS ARE SAYING

Speaking on BBC during half-time, former Premier League striker Dion Dublin commented on Sterling's role in the second goal. He said: "Even though we've just seen Raheem assist Palmer, Raheem has to do that when he comes in off the right and get those tap ins."

While his pundit partner and former Chelsea man Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink spoke on Sanchez's first half, where he added: "He gets himself in trouble. He does it again. He needs to get better, he is taking too much time and risk. He is lucky. The only defence I can give him is that he was injured."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Which ever side wins the quarter-final at Stamford Bridge will progress into the FA Cup semi-final, which will be played at Wembley Stadium. This competition marks the final chance for Chelsea to secure silverware this season, after falling short in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool recently. Other teams remaining in the cup include Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Coventry City.

Tottenham player far away from return after "long-term" injury

Tottenham Hotspur will be without one player for the foreseeable future after his "long-term" injury, confirms manager Ange Postecoglou.

Injured Spurs players

The north Londoners currently have a handful of players sidelined and unable to contribute on the field.

Ivan Perisic, who sustained a complex ACL injury himself in training a few weeks ago, and summer signing Manor Solomon. The latter player looks set to miss the next two months, while young goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman is yet to return following his surgery.

However, in some really good news for Spurs, Uruguay international Rodrigo Bentancur did return to the field during their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last night. The midfielder had been out for months due to a long-term ACL problem of his own, but Postecoglou was able to reintroduce Bentancur on Friday after months of rehabilitation.

Indeed, the Tottenham injury list is far smaller than it was this time a month ago, but one player looks set to be out for a fair while yet.

Left-back Ryan Sessegnon, who will be desperate to prove his worth for Postecoglou, may have to contend with the in-form Destiny Udogie upon his return. However, as per the Spurs manager himself, it appears the Englishman won't have to worry about that for a long time.

Ryan Sessegnon far away after "long-term" injury

The former Fulham star, who was hailed as a "reliable" player by Conte, hasn't featured under Postecoglou yet with the Australian confirming Sessegnon has suffered a "long-term" injury.

"Nah, nah, long-term mate, still a way to go," said the Tottenham boss before Crystal Palace on Sessegnon's comeback (via football.london).

"Yeah it's tough for him, it's hard. When people ask me about being motivated, look at players like Ryan who have done nothing wrong but are working their backside off every day to try to get back. If you need motivation as footballers, there's plenty of it around. You may not be playing or playing as much as you want bit you're still in a good space where you can at least afford yourself the opportunity to play whereas guys like Ryan have got to work hard to get back to the group.

"He's got a lot of support here, the medical team and sports science staff work hard with him and he's still part of the team on a daily basis so we've just got to get him back to a space where he's physically able to participate again."

Man Utd: Pundit makes Ten Hag sack claim after "whispers" from Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag's job at Old Trafford is safe for now; however, rumours will continue to circulate regarding the Dutchman if results fail to improve at the club, according to one pundit.

Man Utd updates

This term, Manchester United have flattered to deceive and a culture of toxicity has bred its way into Old Trafford on and off the field, with off-field incidents involving Jadon Sancho and Antony alongside loanee Mason Greenwood creating mass hysteria away from the pitch.

Of course, the ongoing takeover saga at Man Utd has continued to destabilise the Premier League giants' progress in the transfer market. However, the Red Devils now look to finally be close to investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his petrochemicals firm Ineos following a long, drawn-out process, as per The Times.

Results-wise, United have lost five of their opening ten fixtures in the English top-flight and have lost the fear factor associated with away opposition pitching up at Old Trafford in years gone by. This was compounded on Sunday by Manchester City, who comfortably disposed of their rivals by a scoreline of 3-0 courtesy of a double from Erling Haaland and one from Phil Foden.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage laid into Manchester United's recruitment in the aftermath of the Red Devils' comprehensive defeat to Manchester City, saying: "You have got to look at the recruitment for Manchester United. Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Reguilon are three of your back four finishing the game for Manchester United against your rivals at Old Trafford."

In the Champions League, the Red Devils have won just one of their opening three group stage matches, in a dramatic yet unconvincing 1-0 victory over Copenhagen at Old Trafford last midweek; nevertheless, questions continue to reign regarding Ten Hag's ability to turn around the fortunes of his underperforming side.

Alan Hutton drops Erik ten Hag sack verdict

Speaking to Football Insider, BBC pundit Alan Hutton has indicated that he doesn't believe that Ten Hag's immediate future is under threat, despite recent reports saying Ratcliffe and Man Utd could look at former Chelsea manager Graham Potter. Nevertheless, the former Scotland international insists that "whispers" over his future and potential replacements will persist if results don't improve at Old Trafford.

"You just have to look at what he did last season. It might not be amazing for all Man United fans and what they used to be doing in the past but it is where they are at this moment in time, they are building something from the ground up and that takes time.

Erik ten Hag

"I think they have spent a lot of money and some of the signings have not worked out as yet but the whispers I am hearing always go around big clubs, especially when it is a takeover. Sometimes it is just rumours. If results take a drastic turn and they end up falling out the European spots then they might look to change it. He is not that long in the door so I think he will be given time but as we know at big clubs it can be difficult if you are not winning games. I think at this moment in time he is in an alright position."

Manchester United have no time to wallow or feel sorry for themselves, as Newcastle United await on Wednesday in the EFL Cup last 16 on Wednesday evening at Old Trafford.

Rangers: Clement could unearth ideal Lundstram heir in "highly rated" gem

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement has a tough job on his hands after taking over from Michael Beale, and he will need to hit the ground running in order to impress the Ibrox faithful.

The current crop of players have not been good enough so far this season, failing to qualify for the Champions League group stages while slipping seven points behind Celtic in the Premiership table.

The Belgian coach will have his own ideas and processes on how to bring the Gers back to the summit of Scottish football and this will include getting a tune out of the current crop of players, while thinking about the future.

There are five players out of contract in 2024, and they will be keen on showing the new boss their talents in order to secure an extension. John Lundstram is one of those five and could this be his final season at Ibrox?

How has John Lundstram performed this season?

The former Sheffield United midfielder is into his third season with the Light Blues, yet he only has a Scottish Cup winners medal to show for it.

Across the squad this term, Lundstram ranks fifth for accurate passes per game (61) while also ranking eighth for key passes per game (one), seventh for tackles per game (1.3) and fourth for interceptions (1.3), suggesting he has not exactly been a standout so far this season as other players have outperformed him.

Rangers'JohnLundstramduring training.

Clement may look to give every player a clean slate and this could benefit everyone, especially the summer signings. With less than a year to go on his current deal, however, might Lundstram be looking over his shoulder as there is plenty of young talent emerging through the academy.

Cole McKinnon is one of the players knocking on the door with regard to securing regular minutes in the first team, and he could turn into an ideal heir for the Englishman.

How good is Cole McKinnon?

The youngster has already featured for the senior side, playing against Hearts on the final day of the 2021/22 season, even scoring a debut goal and the future looked bright for the teenage starlet.

Ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, the midfielder was sent out on loan to Partick Thistle in order to gain regular minutes at a club playing in one of the most challenging leagues in the country, and it may have helped to improve his game.

Before he joined, journalist Jordan Campbell praised the teenager, saying: “Understand Rangers midfielder Cole McKinnon, who signed a new three-year deal yesterday, is expected to join Partick Thistle on loan.

“The 19-year-old is highly rated at Ibrox and scored in the final league game of last season. Goes box-to-box and has a knack of getting a goal.”

Although predominately featuring in the centre of midfield, McKinnon was able to burst forward often from the middle of the pitch and create chances for others, while also scoring the odd goal himself.

He finished last season having scored three goals and registered three assists across 31 matches and while Partick failed to get promoted, the Scot impressed. Meanwhile, Lundstram has zero goals or assists in the Premiership this term.

Indeed, the 20-year-old whiz has made the matchday squad on five occasions this season, including both Europa League ties, and surely he will get his opportunity to shine under the new manager in the coming months.

Lundstram turns 30 in February and while this is still relatively young for the modern player, he certainly is not in his peak years anymore.

This could provide McKinnon, who has showcased his ability to chip in with goals and assists from a central midfield position, an opportunity to take over as the former Sheffield United star's heir at Ibrox.

Newcastle transfer news: Fabrizio Romano drops update on Kalvin Phillips

Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a move for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, and Fabrizio Romano has now delivered the chances of him moving to St. James’ Park in January.

How many appearances has Kalvin Phillips made for Man City?

Since putting pen to paper at the Etihad Stadium from Leeds United last summer, Phillips has only made 26 appearances, and he’s really struggled for game time this season having made zero starts and just three substitute appearances in the Premier League (WhoScored – Phillips statistics).

Pep Guardiola’s defensive midfielder still has another five years remaining on his long-term deal (Man City contracts), but due to him clearly being extremely low down in the manager’s pecking order, it’s understandable that he could want to move to a club where he’ll receive more regular minutes.

According to iNews, England’s international has emerged as a target for PIF and Eddie Howe in the northeast, alongside top-flight rivals Everton, as they weigh up their options ahead of January, and the outlet claim that the Sky Blues are willing to put the 27-year-old up for sale due to him being on the fringe of the action.

Kalvin Phillips transfer update

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano shared a transfer update on Kalvin Phillips and admitted that despite there being rumours regarding a move to Newcastle and Everton, they are, as it stands, not in any concrete talks:

Kalvin Phillips – Despite links with Newcastle and Everton, I’m not aware of concrete talks on this one. Phillips wanted to stay at City this summer despite some approaches, so he’s still focused on doing his best for City and then a decision will be made later, like November or December.

"Newcastle won’t decide anything on transfer targets before they know what happens in their Champions League group.”

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

How much does Kalvin Phillips earn?

In M11, Phillips currently pockets £150k-per-week (Man City salaries), which he isn’t really earning considering that he’s not been able to force his way into the starting squad, but should he make the switch to Newcastle, he could definitely flourish under Howe, especially considering that he would surely relish the opportunity to begin a new adventure.

Tackling

The 2022 World Cup participant is currently recording a 90% pass success rate which highlights his calmness and composure on the ball, but he also loves to get stuck in having won all of his tackles made in the top-flight so far this season (FBRef – Phillips statistics).

Phillips, who has the versatility to operate in three roles in the midfield as well as at centre-back, can even contribute to efforts in the final third having clocked up 28 involvements, 14 goals and the same number of assists, since the start of his career (Transfermarkt – Phillips statistics), so this could be a risk worth taking for the Magpies hierarchy.

Wilder must unleash "beautiful" Sheffield United star who Leeds wanted

It’s fair to say tonight’s Championship contest between Leeds United and Sheffield United is a hotly anticipated one, as the second tier’s top two do battle at Bramall Lane.

The Blades could well topple the Whites off their perch at the top of the division with a special win, with South Yorkshire also winning itself bragging rights in the process.

Chris Wilder

Of course, Chris Wilder’s men might find Leeds too difficult of a team to break down, on the contrary, with Daniel Farke and Co potentially five points clear at the summit come full-time.

It will be a fascinating match to take in, with the 57-year-old left with many a selection dilemma too ahead of Leeds’ visit as various injured personnel could be back fit and ready to go.

Sheffield United's selection dilemmas

One face that could be back in contention for this second-tier humdinger is Tom Cannon with the nine-goal striker in the Championship this season nowhere to be seen last time out versus Luton Town owing to injury.

Now, however, he could be fast-tracked back into the first team fold to try and catch a staunch Leeds defence cold, with the ex-Stoke City loanee yet to get off the mark in his new surroundings after a potent stint at the Potters.

Tom Cannon in action for Sheffield United

It would be quite the dramatic stage for Cannon to start to recapture his Stoke best, with Wilder also potentially boosted by experienced head Kieffer Moore being back fit as another body he can call upon up top.

Amazingly, the Welshman has never scored against Leeds from nine career contests, but unwanted records like that are made to be broken, with the ex-Cardiff City man on five strikes for the season when fit.

But, away from the two named strikers, there is another figure who could make a timely return from the treatment room that would really hurt Leeds, having previously been on their radar as a transfer target.

The Sheffield United star who could really hurt Leeds

Leeds have definitely kept a keen eye on proceedings at Bramall Lane in recent years when it comes to their incoming transfer business, with Jayden Bogle poached from South Yorkshire last summer to defect over to Elland Road.

In the same window, Farke and Co were allegedly interested in snapping up second-tier star Gustavo Hamer, but no such deal came to be, leaving the high-flying Blades with a top talent for the level.

The table-toppers eventually landed Manor Solomon’s signature, who has taken to life in the Championship swimmingly with seven strikes and seven assists in league action, but Hamer feels as if he would’ve been a sterling buy long-term for the Whites especially if promotion is reached.

Indeed, the 27-year-old managed to tally up an impressive four goals and six assists across 36 Premier League appearances last season for Wilder’s men – even as a rock-bottom finish was confirmed in the top-flight – on top of the fact he is only two goal contributions off Solomon in the here and now.

Amazingly, his seven goals and five assists would place him among Leeds’ top five performers if he had entered the building, with Farke’s men even more of a terrifying prospect potentially if Hamer was thrown into the side down the left or as an attack-oriented body centrally.

Hamer could have the last laugh later on, however, if he is fit enough to start, as the “beautiful” Blades ace – as he’s been heralded in the past by football journalist Josh Bunting – goes about delivering a reality check to the league leaders
