> Mock Draft 5.0 – Veja a escolha do Dallas Cowboys

Rangers stance on Borna Barisic exit shared as Leeds eye January move

Rangers could lose a "special" player during the January transfer window, with a new transfer report claiming a big English club are eyeing a move for him.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers could delve into the transfer market this month, as Philippe Clement looks to further perfect his squad between now and the end of the season.

A host of different left-backs have been linked with moves to Ibrox, ahead of the possible exit of Ridvan Yilmaz, with Liverpool youngster Owen Beck and Benfica ace David Jurasek among those in the mix to come in.

That isn't the only position that is being focused on, however, with West Ham right-back Ben Johnson someone who Rangers are fighting other clubs for, as he looks increasingly likely to leave the London Stadium before the month comes to an end.

Leeds want Rangers ace Borna Barisic

According to a new update from Football Scotland's reliable reporter Mark Hendry, Leeds United are among the clubs interested in signing Rangers left-back Borna Barisic, however, a new contract at Ibrox is also not ruled out. Yilmaz's exit is also possible, ahead of a potential switch to Galatasaray.

Glasgow Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

"Borna Barisic has suitors this month in Leeds United and around Europe in France, Spain and Germany but Gers want him to sign a new contract and have put the question forward for the left-back to consider. Meanwhile another left-back, Ridvan Yilmaz, is still having his future discussed with Hellas Verona wanting the player. Galatasaray reportedly had a bid rejected as Gers look to move him on."

Barisic has been a brilliant player for Rangers over a significant period of time, racking up a total of 224 appearances for the Scottish Premiership giants, so losing him midway through the season could be a blow, given his experience of title races in the past.

The 31-year-old is also someone who was lauded by Steven Gerrard during his time as Gers manager, with the Liverpool legend hailing a brilliant goal he scored back in 2019:

"It’s a moment of magic. I always felt that it would take a moment of brilliance from one of the front men or wide men, or a really well-executed free-kick. Thankfully Borna stepped up and he deserves all the credit that he gets. I’ve seen him do that many times on the training pitch but it’s alright doing that when nobody’s there. You’ve got to do it in big moments so fair play to him."

This season, Barisic has started nine league games, invariably sharing playing time with Yilmaz, also winning an average of 1.8 aerial duels per game, and it would be better to keep hold of him for the time being, especially if his fellow left-back moves on.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 14, 2024

At 31, his best days could be behind him, or may well be in the relatively near future, but he should be seen as a player who can contribute positively between now and May, potentially leaving at the end of the season instead.

Since his move from Blackburn for £18 million, the 20-year-old has made a significant impact at Selhurst Park despite featuring in just 15 Premier League games. He is often hailed as Palace's midfield dynamo as he has not been afraid to express himself even against top-tier teams like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Especially in Palace's 4-0 triumph against United, Wharton showed the world his potential with an impressive contribution at the centre of the park against the likes of seasoned campaigners like Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen. His consistent performances have earned him admiration from fans and raised discussions about a possible inclusion in England's Euro 2024 squad.

  • WHAT WHARTON SAID

Despite the speculation, Wharton has his feet firmly grounded. In an interview with he said: "It is great to see, obviously. You can't complain, it's not on my mind at all unless I'm asked about it. That is the best way for me to go about it. If I got it then, brilliant. If not then that's football, recover in the summer and then go again. I've only played 15 games in the Premier League, I'm not expecting anything.

"I can't say if I'd be ready. I wouldn't say I can't do it. I believe in myself that I can play football for whoever, whenever and wherever. I am focused on myself and playing to the best of my ability."

West Ham can ease Paqueta blow by signing "exceptional" £30m talent

So far, West Ham United's 2023/24 season is shaping up to be even better than last year.

David Moyes has led them to sixth in the Premier League, through to the knockout stages of the Europa League, and while they have to replay their FA Cup third-round tie against Bristol City, they are still in the competition and have every chance of going far.

That said, fans can't have everything now, can they?

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta

The recent loss of Lucas Paqueta in the game against Bristol over the weekend is a massive concern, although the latest player touted for a move to the London Stadium would undoubtedly help to ease the blow: Leeds United's Wilfried Gnonto.

West Ham United transfer news – Wilfried Gnonto

According to Sports Lens, West Ham are looking to strengthen their attacking options in 2024, and one of the players they are 'keeping tabs on' is Leeds' Italian wideman, Gnonto.

The report reveals that the Hammers were interested in the young winger in the summer, but when it was clear that the Peacocks weren't open to selling him, they moved on.

Wilfried Gnonto for Leeds United.

Sports Lens also named Fulham as one of the other Premier League sides interested in Gnonto, meaning that a bidding war could develop if the Irons don't strike quickly enough.

Unfortunately for the Eastenders, it probably won't be a cheap deal to complete, as reports over the summer indicated that the Championship side value their player at around £30m. However, with the injury to Paqueta, that might prove to be a price worth paying.

Wilfried Gnonto could ease the blow of Lucas Paqueta's injury

Now, if fans are expecting Gnonto to come into the side and immediately replicate the sort of performances that Paqueta has been putting in this season, then they might be sorely disappointed.

The Brazilian has been characteristically brilliant this year, with FBref placing him in the upper echelons of attacking midfielders in Europe's top five leagues.

However, the Leeds youngster should undoubtedly be able to come in and be an improvement upon Said Benrahma, who could be deployed on that left-hand side while Paqueta is sidelined for six to eight weeks, as per Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

This becomes clear when comparing the pair's underlying numbers, as even though neither one has been able to nail down a consistent starting spot in their respective teams, Gnonto's numbers are still more impressive.

The "absolute nightmare for defenders", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, registers more goals and assists, produces more shot and goal-creating actions and succeeds in more of his take-ons per 90.

The only notable metric in which the Algerian comes out on top is his non-penalty expected goals and assists figure. However, his lack of actual goals just highlights his wasteful nature in front of goal.

Ultimately, the loss of Paqueta, even though it might just be for a couple of months, is a massive blow, and though Gnonto won't be able to come in and replicate his performances on the wing, he would likely do a better job than the options currently available to Moyes.

Liverpool could supercharge Robbo with move for £52m "dominator"

The 2022/23 season was easily the most downcast of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool tenure, with the years of illustrious success being halted by a fifth-placed Premier League finish, a result of a dramatic decline and an irreparable malfunction in the engine room.

This season, the Reds have been fantastic in the Premier League and such worries have been left in the past, but issues remain over the thinness of the squad in several areas, compounded by injuries to several key players.

Liverpool could avenge Bellingham howler with move for £113m-rated "alien"

Jurgen Klopp’s side could pull off a truly stunning signing in 2024.

Dec 30, 2023

First-placed and enjoying successful campaigns in the Europa League and Carabao Cup, Klopp will know that his side must utilise the January transfer window to bolster the squad and ensure that a rueful gaze is not cast back to the winter months with it all on the line at the business end.

In particular, the defence could do with some support, especially after Joel Matip ruptured his ACL earlier in December, with Sporting CP's Goncalo Inacio seemingly at the top of the shopping list.

Liverpool transfer news – Goncalo Inacio

As the January market approaches so too does news revealing the latest movements surrounding Inacio's signature, with the Portugal international attracting attention from some of Europe's foremost outfits, namely Arsenal and Real Madrid.

According to reports in Spain, as per the Mirror, Liverpool could advance long-standing interest in the Sporting star as Klopp seeks defensive cover, and with Inacio's left-footedness fitting the bill perfectly, this is understandable.

Sporting CP defenderGoncalo Inacio.

With a €60m (£52m) release clause woven into his contract with the Liga Portugal side, Inacio would not come cheap but could be the perfect option to strengthen Liverpool's ambitious squad and provide the dimension needed to lay hands on silverware before the end of the term.

Goncalo Inacio's style of play

After so much interest in his services throughout 2023, it was somewhat surprising that Inacio, aged 22, penned a new long-term contract with his homeland team back in August, raising his release clause and effectively ending Liverpool's chances of completing a move so late into the summer transfer window, with funds still required in midfield.

Having chalked up 145 appearances – scoring 14 goals – for the Lisbon side since graduating from the club's academy in 2020, Inacio has established himself as a defensive star of far more dynamic style than the lion's share of his positional peers.

An immense passer of the ball, creative and intelligent in his distribution and awareness of openings through the passages, the 6 foot 1 star has been hailed for his "complete" skill set by talent scout Jacek Kulig and is undoubtedly one of the hottest prospects in the rearguard for Europe's most ambitious outfits.

As per FBref, Inacio ranks among the top 7% of central defenders across divisions similar to the Liga Portugal over the past year for assists, the top 5% for shot-creating actions, the top 1% for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90.

Goncalo Inacio: Key Strengths

With such metrics highlighting his remarkable range of creative tools, always looking to spark life into offensive transitions and influence play from deep, Liverpool's intrigue is only made clearer.

While he will never be a player of raw defensive might to parallel someone such as Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, Inacio offers a singular style that could work tremendously in a sort of counterbalance at Anfield.

BBC Sport analyst Raj Chohan certainly thinks as much, having said: "Gonçalo Inácio is the perfect counter-weight to Konaté. Inacio-VVD-Konaté: Build-up conductor. Leader/aerial dominator/switches of play. Immense recovery speed & coverage of space."

Completing 88% of his passes in the Portuguese top-flight this term, it's easy to assume that the £29k-per-week star is just crisp in his passing, but given that he averages 5.4 ball recoveries per game and succeeds with 10% of his dribbles, there's no disputing that he is adept at surging forward, stretching the central lines, to open up a myriad of corridors from which offensive teammates could flourish.

With Inacio's left-sided preference allowing Van Dijk to shift onto his favoured side, a whole new level of fluidity could be achieved down the left channel, with Andrew Robertson perhaps benefitting greatly from the prospective transfer.

Imagine Goncalo Inacio & Andrew Robertson

Robertson has been one of the best players in the Premier League during Liverpool's rise under Klopp's leadership, having been astutely signed from Hully City for just £10m in 2017.

Having now amassed 275 appearances for the Reds, supplying 63 assists, the 29-year-old Scotland captain has been incredible and has charged the flank for many years, picking up silverware in abundance along the way.

This season, he has only played eight times, absent since October after injuring his shoulder on international duty, and while he still faces several more weeks on the sidelines, his return will be a galvanising bonus to the Anfield side's pursuit of prominence once again.

As the table above portrays, Robertson's creativity is something that has been sorely missed; while Kostas Tsimikas has done an adequate job in filling in, he is now injured too and doesn't offer the same kind of balance and all-encompassing style that the first choice option does.

Indeed, the £100k-per-week ace has also completed 87% of his passes and averaged 7.1 ball recoveries per game in the Premier League this season, highlighting the energy and robustness that would meld with Inacio's game.

He also ranks among the top 5% of positional peers for passes attempted and the top 9% for progressive passes per 90, showcasing his inventive array of abilities further.

wilfred-ndidi-andrew-robertson-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

With Inacio putting such emphasis on the fluency and supplementation of his teammates, Robertson could find the perfect partner to place balls into open space down the left side, in turn allowing for regular support into the box for the likes of Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and co.

While Inacio's price tag is somewhat lofty, there is every chance that he will bloom into one of the very best around, and securing his signature would be a deal to bring the best out of his skills and those around him.

Southampton move for Manuel Benson now in danger of collapse – report

Championship promotion-chasers Southampton have already done two bits of business in January, recruiting teenager Joe O'Brien Whitmarsh from Cork City in Ireland and then striking a loan deal for Bournemouth midfielder Joe Rothwell this week.

A third seemed imminent when the Saints agreed a temporary deal for Burnley winger Manuel Benson, one that would see them pay a £1m loan fee and cover the entirety of the player's salary for the remainder of the season. However, there's now been a concerning update on that particular deal in a potential blow for manager Russell Martin.

Benson's Southampton move in danger of collapse

According to Football Insider, Benson's move to Southampton has stalled. It's not yet clear why there's a spanner in the works, but the deal is now very much in jeopardy despite the two clubs shaking hands earlier in the week.

Manuel Benson for Burnley.

Indeed, the other clubs who had been interested in Benson are "back in the race", sensing the opportunity to hijack the transfer when he appeared on the verge of the move to St Mary's.

Benson had already lit up Championship at Burnley

It would be a real setback if Southampton lose out on Benson, particularly at such an advanced stage. A 2022 recruit from Antwerp in Belgium, he's barely featured for the Clarets this season, making the squad for just seven Premier League matches and only coming on four times. He may have signed a new four-year contract as recently as August, but he'll surely be considering his future at Turf Moor in light of Vincent Kompany's repeated snubs. In that sense, it would be a surprise if the current issue stemmed from the player not being keen on a move away.

Kompany has favoured Johann Berg Gudmundsson and new signing Wilson Odobert this season, even though Benson tore up the Championship last year. He scored 12 goals in 33 matches, which sounds good even before you place it in the context of his limited minutes. On a per-90 basis, he was the best playmaker in the league (0.25 expected assists), while he also ranked second for goals (0.66) as well as goal contributions (0.66).

Benson repeatedly showed he was capable of scoring in situations where the goalkeeper would ordinarily be the favourite, over-performing relative to his xG by a league-best 7.0. No wonder that Andy Jones, a Burnley reporter at The Athletic, said he was on a "different level" to his peers in the second tier. Jones even went as far as to call the goalscoring winger Burnley's version of ex-Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben, so you can see how much excitement he was generating ahead of the side's return to the Premier League.

Benson, a "beautiful footballer" in the words of sports journalist Josh Bunting, could have been exactly the signing that makes the difference between climbing into the automatic promotion places and remaining in the play-off spots. Southampton fans will hope that the issue can be ironed out, but you'd have to say the latest developments don't sound especially promising.

Ten Hag can terrorise Forest again by unleashing Man Utd’s £150k-p/w "magician"

The best way to describe Manchester United’s season so far is inconsistent, as highlighted by their seventh position in the Premier League table after 19 matches.

Last time out, Erik ten Hag’s team proudly celebrated a classic United comeback as they overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Aston Villa 3-2.

A Man Utd star’s performance went under the radar against Aston Villa.

Today, the Red Devils travel to the City Ground, where they will take on Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest.

When the two clubs met in the reverse fixture, a certain £150k per week United star terrorised the Forest side.

Christian Eriksen’s performances vs Forest

Coincidentally, the last time prior to this week that United completed a 3-2 comeback after going two behind in the first half was when Forest travelled to Old Trafford in August. The man who was the catalyst for that victory was Christian Eriksen, who scored the first of United’s three goals.

The goal highlighted the Dane’s ability to drift into dangerous positions without being picked up. Eriksen showed goal-scoring instincts to follow in a Bruno Fernandes shot, which was parried by the keeper. He then remained inside the six-yard box, got across the centre-back, and confidently flicked home Marcus Rashford’s cross at the near post.

The ex-Spurs player controlled the tie from that point on, dropping deeper and progressing the play to teammates having 'given more balance' in the centre of the park – as per GOAL's Richard Martin – which will be needed this weekend once again as Forest are extremely physical and aggressive.

Eriksen was also immense during the Red Devils' last trip to the City Ground, where they won 2-0. He once again showed his creativity and eye for a goal in that game, despite failing to register a goal contribution. His ability to dictate the play was also vital, as it brought composure to the United side in possession.

The table below shows some statistics from that fixture and hints at what could be seen this weekend.

Christian Eriksen vs Aston Villa this week

When Eriksen was named in the starting XI against the Villans, it was the first time in over a month that he had started a match due to a knee injury, which saw him miss eight matches. However, the spell out didn’t seem to affect the 31-year-old, as he performed brilliantly throughout his 89 minutes on the field.

Man United midfielder Christian Eriksen

His role in the side was to provide support to Kobbie Mainoo, both In and out of possession, however, he was at the centre of United’s comeback. The former Ajax star often dropped slightly deeper to pick up the ball, which helped Ten Hag’s team massively in the buildup phase. The "magician,” as dubbed by ex-teammate Dele Alli, made the team tick and acted as the glue between each third.

Eriksen’s technical quality and class allowed United to evade the Villa press, linking up with Fernandes and Mainoo to devastating effect. The midfielder was energetic and used his intelligence and ability to read the game to regain possession for his side.

The table below portrays his performance via a handful of statistics.
