Babar Azam, Haris Sohail and Shaheen Afridi's genius keep Pakistan alive

New Zealand were kept to 238 by a brilliant new-ball burst and they were then taken out of the game by a glorious partnership from two next-gen players

The Report by Shashank Kishore26-Jun-2019

As it happenedIt is incredible how Pakistan find ways of roaring back from hopeless situations. They were written off only a week earlier, languishing at ninth position with a solitary win in five games. They were yet to crack a chase – both above 330 – in two attempts this World Cup. Then when it seemed as if they would finally restrict an opponent to below 300 – New Zealand were 83 for 5 in the 27th over – Colin de Grandhomme (64) and James Neesham (97 not out) put together the side’s best sixth-wicket stand in World Cup history to haul them back. Then chasing 238, against two fast bowlers upfront – one who wickedly swings the ball and another who is often at their throat at 150 clicks – they lost Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq. The experienced Mohammad Hafeez played and missed, beaten on the inside and outside. Then, he was hit on the helmet by Lockie Ferguson. Who really gave them a chance?Yet, amid the chaos, they found some calm in Babar Azam, who sealed victory with an unbeaten tenth ODI century, a pristine 101 that had a capacity crowd, a majority of it Pakistan fans, crooning with ‘oohs and aahs’. In Haris Sohail, he found an invaluable ally, the pair conjuring an 126-run fourth-wicket stand to see Pakistan home with five balls to spare. Haris’ contribution a noteworthy 68 that built on the 89 against South Africa at Lord’s. Pakistan are now within two wins of a possible semi-final berth that will have their fans talking of the eerie similarities between 1992 and 2019 for at least another week.ALSO READ: Sharda Ugra on Babar Azam, who beats himself up just to get betterFor large parts of their chase, it was as if they were battling to save a game on a fifth-day surface. Hafeez had a leg gully for the short ball, deep square for the hook or pull, three slips for his open-faced pokes. This was serious pressure, and yet from time-to-time, as if to ask what the fuss was all about, he played delightful pull shots and oozed lazy Rohit Sharma-like elegance in gliding the ball behind point.Babar showed patience early on, and exhibited enough class to keep putting the bad ball away. When he was attacked with short balls, he was happy to let go of both his ego and ignore them. The pair set out to rebuild the chase, least perturbed with the asking rate, focusing on milking runs and ensuring they wouldn’t lose too many wickets going into the last 20 overs, where teams believe they can chase down 150 if it comes to that. Here they only needed 110.Even as this strategy played out, New Zealand kept looking to pick up wickets. Invariably, this strategy brings with it the risk of leaking runs. As Mitchell Santner came on, there was grip and square turn. Suddenly, the two batsmen, tailor-made for such surfaces, struggled and New Zealand may have just begun to wonder if they had erred by not picking Ish Sodhi, the legspinner. This was evident when Kane Williamson brought himself on, but he struck gold immediately as Hafeez had a brain fade moment and holed out to deep midwicket.Shaheen Afridi celebrates after the dismissal of Ross Taylor•Getty Images

It broke a 66-run stand that allowed Pakistan to get back on track after the two early strikes threatened to blow the lid off their chase. Fortunately for them, Babar wasn’t going to give it away. At the other end, Haris attacked spin and pace alike, muscling Santner first and later the returning Boult for sixes even as Williamson tried his last roll of the dice. This partnership proved to be the ice to Shaheen Afridi’s fire earlier in the day, when he ripped the heart out of New Zealand’s batting in a searing spell after being introduced first change in the fifth over.Shaheen’s first spell read a magical 4-2-8-2, in which he accounted for the huge scalps of Colin Munro and Ross Taylor. The Taylor wicket in particular was as much because of Sarfaraz as it was Shaheen’s angle and late movement.Sarfaraz deserved credit for two reasons. One for being ultra-aggressive and looking to continuously make inroads, unlike in the past where has been happy to sit back and let the game drift. Two for leading the way with the catching at a time when they are trying to stave off the dubious distinction of being the poorest catching team at the tournament. The Taylor catch was right out of the top drawer, diving full-length to his right and taking it one-handed just as it was about to hit the turf.Only a week ago, he was unfairly shamed, not just by a stray fan but also by a former cricketer who knows a thing-or-two to of playing in World Cups. Sarfaraz admitted this took a toll on him and his young family. Yet under pressure, this wasn’t a bad way of shutting up the haters. In another intangible contribution no scorecard would ever reveal, he kept Shaheen on for a fifth over and he reaped the rewards with a third wicket when he had Tom Latham nicking behind.Jimmy Neesham smashes a six as he leads the counter-attack•Getty Images

This ripper of a spell from Shaheen came on the back of Mohammad Amir’s early strike of Martin Guptill, as he chopped on trying to drive with minimal feet movement. In walked Williamson and he looked in control, knowing where the off stump was, and relying on the delicate dabs behind the wicket. If it was pitched up, he was happy to leave, frustrating the bowlers and then suddenly when they erred, he picked them off. Runs didn’t exactly flow, but he rebuilt the innings slowly to make 41 off 68, when he was done in by Shadab Khan’s mastery – drift, turn and bounce – to have him nicking behind in trying to jab at the ball. It was precisely at this moment you wondered if New Zealand erred by not picking Sodhi. With half the side back, Sarfaraz slightly allowed the game to drift by introducing Imad Wasim’s left-arm darts, when he really could’ve punted with Amir, who had only bowled four overs in his first spell. And by the time Amir returned, Neesham was well-set. De Grandhomme is a serial six-hitter for New Zealand – but here, he needed to hang in and take the game deep. And that is exactly what he did, until the 40th over, before taking off.Neesham continued take calculated risks, never giving the impression that he was blindly swinging. After overcoming burst of genuine pace, they second-guessed the bowlers, waited for the slower balls, used the depth of the crease and whacked it downtown or square of the wicket. De Grandhomme’s knock of 64 ended in the 48th over when an adventurous second to third man resulted in his run-out. Neesham batted right through, muscling the last ball for six to finish 97. This didn’t bring with it the promise of victory, but the position New Zealand found themselves in was heaps better than the 166 they threatened to crash out at one stage (their score in that famous 1992 World Cup group clash). Yet, it came in second-best to Babar’s masterclass that continued to give this tournament another wild twirl as it approaches the semi-final stage.

Ellyse Perry's 84 not out leads the way as Australia put one hand on the Ashes

It is already nigh on impossible to see how England can claim the 20 wickets required to win the match and stay in the series

The Report by Andrew Miller18-Jul-2019Australia Women 265 for 3 (Perry 84*, Haynes 54*) v England WomenIs it too soon to say that Australia have retained the Ashes? Technically, yes, but such was the ease with which a succession of their batsmen mastered the opening day of the one-off Test in Taunton, it is already nigh on impossible to see how England can claim the 20 wickets required to win the match and stay in the series … unless, of course, the pitch starts ragging like a Ciderabad bad’un, in which case the 265 runs that Australia already have on the board will surely prove decisive.Trailing 6-0 on points after losing all three of the recent ODIs, Heather Knight’s team needed nothing less than the four points available for this Test to keep their hopes alive going into next week’s T20s. And they appeared to have thrown in their lot with Taunton’s reputation as a spinner’s paradise, omitting their Test-specialist seamer Kate Cross for the left-arm debutant Kirstie Gordon, with Sophie Ecclestone and Laura Marsh completing a three-prong spin attack. But then Knight lost the toss, and the chance to bowl last on a used surface, and by the close of a one-sided first day, everything that could go wrong for England had gone wrong. Four of Australia’s top five posted half-centuries, including Ellyse Perry, who picked up the same indomitable form she had shown in her last Test innings – 213 not out at North Sydney Oval in the 2017-18 Ashes – to reach the close on 84 not out, making a new record aggregate of 297 consecutive runs for a women’s Test batsman.Furthermore, England’s focus and threat was fundamentally undermined by two key injuries in the course of the day – first when Ecclestone, their attack-leading left-arm spinner, was forced to leave the field midway through her third over, having bruised her shoulder badly while diving in vain for a catch in the outfield.Though she returned to the attack after lunch, and bowled creditably in picking up the big wicket of Meg Lanning for 57, the moment had already been lost for England, who were pushed emphatically on to the defensive by an impressive morning onslaught from Alyssa Healy, whose 58 from 81 balls included 12 fours, four of which came in the space of nine balls from a lacklustre Anya Shrubsole. Her opening spell offered hooping swing but far too much width, and she was not called upon again until the 60th over, by which time the ‘roos had truly bolted.England’s other big concern centred on the fitness of their one in-form batsman, Tammy Beaumont. Though she had barely flinched at short leg after being cracked a savage blow on the left thumb by a full-blooded Healy pull, she had left the field by the close of play and was due to go for an X-ray. Her absence at the top of the order would be incalculable: in the ODIs, Beaumont’s 114 from 115 balls in the second match at Leicester provided the team’s one moment of batting dominance. Aside from her, only Nat Sciver has so much as passed fifty in three innings. For a side that so desperately needed to set the agenda, it was a passive performance from England throughout the first day. With two fifties in the ODIs, Healy was in the mood to dominate from the outset, and her effortless gap-finding left England with few answers, in spite of the odd hint of dramatic turn, including Ecclestone’s first delivery, which exploded past Healy’s off stump in the 12th over. But having over-stretched at midwicket in a futile attempt to intercept another flicked four from Healy, Ecclestone was left in tears after jarring her shoulder as she hit the turf, and having served up a leg-stump half-tracker that was pulled ruthlessly for four, she left the field mid-over, handing the senior spin duties to Gordon – one of two England Test debutants alongside Amy Jones.Gordon settled quickly in the circumstances – though not before Healy had cashed in on a brace of nervy full-tosses to race to a 61-ball fifty, her first in Tests. And, having found her pace and length for the conditions, Gordon struck a vital blow in the final ten minutes before lunch, sliding one past Healy’s back pad and into her stumps to pick up a notable maiden Test wicket in her sixth over.Gordon’s day could and should have got even better in her very next over. Sensing an opportunity to turn the screw at 95 for 2 with two batsmen playing for the interval, Knight posted herself in Lanning’s eyeline at short cover, but then dropped a dolly of a checked drive, with Australia’s most accomplished cricketer on 26.It was a grim moment for the skipper, and though Lanning did occasionally get bogged down by the spinners, she didn’t offer another sniff in pressing onto her half-century. On 57, however, Ecclestone – patched up in the dressing-room and restored to the attack – served up the ball of the day, a cunning slider that slipped under an attempted cut and into Lanning’s off stump. But Perry by this stage was deep into her innings and utterly serene. Her commitment to the front foot in defence, but ability to rock back deep into her crease to attack, offered England no quarter as they probed in vain for a weakness. Their best hope, in fact, came at the other end, where the left-handed Rachael Haynes initially found the footholes hard to combat, at least until she took the initiative with her own footwork, dancing down the track to Gordon and lofting her with the spin over wide long-on for four.By the close, England had surrendered all pretence of the initiative, as Perry closed in on her second Test century in a fourth-wicket stand of 105. It’s going to take something extraordinary to turn this game around, and England – on today’s subdued evidence – don’t look capable of producing it.

Man Utd’s “unbelievable” £100k signing now worth £34m more than Martinez

Manchester United have become known for signing players for a hefty sum, only to see their value decrease significantly soon after joining.

Casemiro is a prime example of that, as the Brazilian was purchased for £70m last summer, and today he's estimated to be valued at £30m.

casemiro-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-manchester-united-rangers-farke-glen-kamara

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will hope to fix that issue as a matter of urgency, with Erik ten Hag's side needing to take a different approach in the transfer market from now on.

That said, there is one current United player who has had an astronomical rise in value over the last two seasons and can be considered an astute capture.

The signing of Lisandro Martinez

Lisandro Martinez has developed into one of United's key players since he followed his boss from Ajax to Man United last summer for £47m. That said, this season the Argentine has only started seven Premier League matches due to injury, and on only his second league start since September, he is facing another spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury against West Ham United at the weekend.

Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez.

This is a huge blow for the team, as his mentality, ball-playing ability, and proactive defending cannot be matched by any other centre-back at the club. The 26-year-old elevates the side to a completely new level, and his injury could be season-defining – having previously been dubbed an "absolute monster" by teammate Luke Shaw.

Nonetheless, the left-footed defender is currently estimated to be valued at €40m (£34m), with his lack of games being a reason why his value has dropped, but the United faithful still arguably regard 'Licha' as their best defender.

Alejandro Garnacho's market value at Man Utd

After featuring in the matchday squad a handful of times and making his debut against Real Sociedad in September 2022, Alejandro Garnacho was handed his first start against the Spanish side two months later, and it only took 17 minutes for him to get his first goal.

Fast forward to today, and the 19-year-old has developed into one of the most reliable performers in the United team, showing maturity way beyond his years. According to journalist Rob Dawson, Garnacho is "unbelievable," and it is difficult to disagree considering he's scored five goals and registered two assists in 15 Premier League starts.

The electric winger joined in the summer of 2020, in a deal rumoured to be worth just £100k. However, he is now United's joint second-most valuable player in the entire squad, being estimated to be valued at €80m (£68m), which is double (or £34m more) than the value of Martinez.

Fernandes, Hojlund, Garnacho

€80m

Antony, Dalot. Onana

Scott McTominay

Garnacho is one of United's most valuable players on the field as well as off it, with his performances backing up former teammate Fred's claim that "he will be one of the best players in the world, for sure."

At such a young age, he has taken on so much responsibility in the United attack, and he has the personality to support his ability. There's no doubt that figure will continue to rise and that he will become one of United's greatest if he develops as promised.

Man Utd truly hit the jackpot with the Argentinian superstar.

After inspiring Real Madrid to La Liga and Champions League success, Vinicius is gearing up to reclaim the Copa America from arch-rivals Argentina. In the absence of an injured Neymar, the onus will be on the 23-year-old to lead Brazil to continental glory and given his stellar form the Selecao are already dreaming of success.

Vinicius has emerged as one of the leading candidates to win the Ballon d'Or along with his team-mate Jude Bellingham on the back of an incredible campaign in the Spanish capital. However, getting his hands on the Copa American trophy in the United States will make him the clear favourite to be named as the best player on the planet – albeit if Bellingham fails to light up the European Championship with England.

WHAT MARTINELLI SAID

However, Arsenal forward, Martinelli believes that Vinicus is already deserving of the Ballon d'Or after scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists in 39 appearances for Real Madrid.

Martinelli said at a press conference: "Of course, it is a great pride to be playing with him. Experiencing day-to-day life, seeing the special and deserving boy he is. I'm very happy to be Brazilian and see Vini shining. In my opinion, he deserves to win the Ballon d'Or. It's a pleasure to share the field with him."

Martin must bench Southampton star who lost 100% duels alongside Bazunu

Nobody would have expected to see this result come full-time when it filtered through last night, Southampton's 25-match unbeaten run in all competitions grinding to a disappointing halt away at Bristol City as Russell Martin's Saints were ultimately humbled by the Robins.

Losing 3-1 at Ashton Gate saw the Saints lose ground on the top two in the Championship as a direct consequence, with Leeds strolling to a 4-0 win away at Swansea City to capitalise on a rare Southampton off-day and leapfrog Martin's men.

The South Coast side will have to dust themselves down and go again this coming Friday, as Carlos Corberan's West Bromwich Albion wait ready to pounce on any Southampton frailties after this loss.

A number of often reliable players let Martin down badly away in Bristol, notably Gavin Bazunu who conceded three goals despite only facing four shots on target all night.

Gavin Bazunu's game vs Bristol City in numbers

Bristol showed to Southampton what it means to have a clinical edge at Ashton Gate last night, putting a once unbeatable-looking Saints side to the sword.

Still, Martin will feel disgruntled by his number one goalkeeper in-between the sticks in Bazunu – the former Manchester City goalkeeper now leaking six goals in his last two matches.

The shaky 21-year-old shot-stopper was bailed out by Southampton bagging five goals at St. Mary's to overcome Huddersfield Town last time at home, but his weaknesses in goal were there for all to see versus a ruthless Robins side.

The Republic of Ireland international would make just one solitary save in the nervy Southampton goal, watching on as a bystander at points as the hosts ran riot in an excellent second-half display from Liam Manning's men.

Coupled with his poor day at the office versus the Terriers too, it could well be time for Martin to give Bazunu a breather when the Saints travel to the Hawthorns on Friday night in what could be a tricky contest.

Likewise, the bemused Southampton boss could decide to drop Will Smallbone from his first-team plans in the West Midlands also after an uninspiring midfield display from the 23-year-old in the 3-1 defeat.

Will Smallbone's game vs Bristol City in numbers

The only surviving member of the central midfield trio from the barnstorming Huddersfield victory – with Flynn Downes injured and Stuart Armstrong making up the numbers on the bench – Smallbone might not be so confident about his chances starting the next match after his showing at Ashton Gate.

The lacklustre Saints number 16 would fail to win any duel against Manning's rampant side, whilst only testing the opposition keeper Max O'Leary with one on-target effort all game when helping out in attack.

As can be seen in the table above, it was a sub-par performance in truth from the usually dependable 23-year-old – Smallbone lackadaisically giving up possession 11 times in the centre of the park, whilst also failing to register a single tackle when the home side attacked with energy and pace on many a breakaway move.

Martin will pray that Downes isn't out for a significant period and can bring him back into the lineup against West Brom at the expense of Smallbone, who will drop to the bench after a forgettable performance in the 3-1 loss.

Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone.

The Saints boss will just excuse this loss as down to lethargy and potential complacency, with Southampton having to get back to winning ways against the Baggies to ensure the wheels don't begin to come off after such a lengthy unbeaten run.
