Derby now eyeing move for £750k gem, but there’s already another offer in

Following promotion from League One, Derby County have turned their attention towards flexing their Championship muscles for the first time and potentially signing a future star.

Derby transfer news

The Rams sealed automatic promotion after a rollercoaster season in which a place in England's second tier wasn't always a guarantee. Promoted nonetheless, Paul Warne's task is to now keep Derby in the Championship to avoid returning directly back to square one in the next campaign. Preparing to avoid the drop, those at Pride Park have reportedly already turned their focus towards the summer transfer window.

With that said, the Rams are eyeing up a move to swoop in and land a future gem for Warne. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Derby are eyeing a move to sign Thierry Small from Charlton Athletic, who will reportedly trigger the one-year option in his contract so they can demand a fee if he leaves.

Warne must soon ditch Derby promotion star who earns more than Cashin

Derby County might look to offload this high earner ahead of entering back into the Championship.

ByKelan Sarson May 8, 2024

The 19-year-old left-back, who previously played for Everton, has a decision to make though, as Charlton have also tabled an improved three-year deal for him to sign.

To make the jump from League One to the Championship will certainly be tempting for a player who is yet to even reach the peak of his powers. It remains to be seen just how much Derby would have to pay to land Small, however, with his price tag only increasing if he signs a new deal at Charlton, though Transfermarkt value him at around £750,000 right now.

It would be a deal worth pursuing for the right price though, given that Small's arrival would hand Louie Sibley plenty of competition at left-wing-back or allow the 22-year-old to move back into his preferred midfield role in the Championship next season.

"Great" Small would unleash Sibley

Whilst Small has had his struggles in the early stages of his career, particularly at Everton and Southampton, he has since found his feet at Charlton to earn the interest of Derby. And now he could step up even more by completing a move to Pride Park and edging ever closer to a Premier League return. It's a move that would also crucially unleash Sibley.

Left playing in the wing-back role this season, Sibley deserves the chance to break into the Rams' midfield and become a key part of Warne's side in his favoured position, and Small's arrival would allow for that transition.

It won't be a simple move, however, given Charlton's reported offer on the table and the fact that manager Nathan Jones seems to be a fan after telling the Daily Echo: "What we won’t do is get rid of good players. We’ll protect good players – if Thierry falls into that then Thierry will be looked after.

“I’ve been really pleased (with his impact so far). Obviously, I know Thierry from Southampton. He had a bit of a tough time – a big-money move as a teenager when he came to Southampton.

"Sometimes you have a little bit of a plateau before you can go again. We hope that is it for Thierry. He is a great kid – a fantastic athlete. He needs some polishing around the edges – but so do most teenagers."

Uruguay and Inter Miami star Luis Suarez announces retirement from international soccer

Luis Suarez announced his retirement from the Uruguay national team Monday, wrapping up an illustrious international career that has seen 142 caps and 69 goals – the most in history.

The striker, who also stars for Inter Miami in MLS, will play his final match in Uruguay's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay Friday at Estadio Centenario, the team's primary home stadium.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Suarez is among the best players Uruguay has produced, and has delivered in countless moments for the South American team.

Suarez made his national team debut on Feb. 8, 2007, a 3-1 win over rivals Colombia. He rose to prominence during the 2010 World Cup as he started the majority of Uruguay's matches.

Similar to his legendary club career, Suarez has been no stranger to controversy. The forward had an infamous handball to block a goal that would earn Ghana a penalty. Asamoah Gyan missed the spot kick and Uruguay would advance after a shootout.

Arguably his best year as a national team player might been 2011, a season in which he led the team to Copa America glory and was named Player of the Tournament after scoring four goals.

WHAT SUAREZ SAID

“I’ve been thinking about this and analyzing this. I believe this is the right time,” Suarez said on Monday, according to the Athletic. “I want to be relaxed when I play my last game with the national team. I’ll be just as excited to play as I was in 2007 when I played for my national team for the first time. That 19-year old kid is now a veteran player, an older player – however you want to call it – with an incredible history with the national team will give his life for the team on Friday.”

AFPDID YOU KNOW?

Suarez is in rarified air as he is one of 38 players to play in four or more World Cups. He played in the 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 World Cups, joining a notable list of footballers, including Miami teamate Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele and Miroslav Klose.

5/10 man may never play for Sunderland again after Millwall display

Whenever Sunderland look to be full of confidence again and ready to put together a positive sequence of results in the Championship, another bump in the road arrives for the Black Cats.

Millwall secured their status as a second-tier club away at the Stadium of Light by winning 1-0, benefitting from a charitable home side who let the Lions score their only shot on target to win by the skin of their teeth.

Mike Dodds will know that these two games to end the season he has to manage in the interim hot-seat are likely to be his last, with the man he surprisingly picked up top to lead the line against the visitors from South London also resigned to the fact he could be exiting this summer.

Bradley Dack's performance vs Millwall in numbers

Bradley Dack's inclusion in Dodds' XI on Saturday was a surprising one, considering the former Blackburn Rovers attacker has been in and around the treatment room at the Wearside club more than actually playing on the pitch this season.

Missing large chunks of the campaign owing to a recurring thigh issue, this was Dack's 16th Championship appearance for the Black Cats and a frankly unmemorable one at that.

The injury-prone 30-year-old would only last 45 minutes before being hauled off by Dodds, with the ex-Riversiders man mustering up just 11 touches of the ball as an isolated attacker for the Black Cats.

Dack would also fail to fire a single effort at the Millwall goal from his dismal run-out at the Stadium of Light, mustering up two key passes but struggling to really pose a goalscoring threat himself up top.

The Sunderland number 46 would be sacrificed for a tactical switch as stated by Dodds at full-time, but his below-par display must have also underwhelmed the stand-in Black Cats boss enough to make that decision at the break.

Handed a middle-of-the-road 5/10 rating by Sunderland Echo journalist Phil Smith when the dust had settled post-match, Dack could see his spot taken up by a different Sunderland body when the Wearside outfit play Watford next.

With his contract up at the end of the season, and Sunderland insistent on starting up-and-coming gems, it looks unlikely Dack will be kept on with that showing against Millwall potentially his last-ever outing in a Black Cats strip.

Dack's future at Sunderland

Dack could well join Corry Evans in leaving the building this summer, with his fellow Sunderland teammate similarly unlucky when it comes to injuries.

Evans also finds himself out of contract, coming in at 33 years of age and representing the older heads still left in the group alongside a 30-year-old Dack.

Sunderland must now ruthlessly replace star who earns 2x Hume’s wage

Sunderland could soon get rid of this injury-prone figure who earns double Trai Hume’s salary.

It would be a sad demise for Dack if he was made a free agent this summer, brought into the building by ex-manager Tony Mowbray at the start of the season to try and recapture his glory days at Ewood Park.

That plan just hasn't worked out whatsoever, with Dack managing just a solitary goal this campaign which is a far cry away from when the 5 foot 9 attacker bagged 15 goals during the 2018-19 season for Blackburn at the same level.

Still, based on his showing against Millwall, his best days look far behind him.

'Completely incomprehensible' – Kevin Danso releases fiery statement after failing Roma medical with defender set to stay at Lens

Lens defender Kevin Danso has expressed his disappointment after his transfer to Roma broke down over a failed medical.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Lens and Roma had reached an agreement over a loan deal with an option to buy the centre-back outright at the end of the 2024-25 season. However, the deal will not go through, with Lens confirming in a statement that a problem appeared during his medical examination. The French side are not happy with the news, adding: "The club is wondering about the deep reasons for the non-validation of this movement for a meticulously monitored player who has played more than 30 matches on French and international pitches."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The issue has caused some distress to 25-year-old centre-back Danso, who argued that no medical disturbances have ever been found in medical tests conducted at Lens or with the Austria national team as he slammed the development as "highly perplexing".

  • WHAT DANSO SAID

The 25-year-old wrote on X: "I am disappointed and upset about the events of the past few days and the failed transfer to AS Roma.

"Above all, I am very surprised by the supposed reason for the collapsed transfer. Both the doctors of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) and the medical department of RC Lens have closely monitored me and regularly examined me over the past years. Most recently, I was thoroughly assessed at the start of pre-season training in Lens and no irregularities were ever found. Therefore, the interpretations of the medical check in Rome are highly perplexing and completely incomprehensible to my team and I.

"I will now discuss my situation with the responsible parties at Lens and at the ÖFB and focus on the tasks ahead."

    WHAT NEXT?

Roma are reportedly not interested in pursuing the transfer any further, meaning the former MK Dons academy prospect will stay with Lens and could be involved when they face Monaco in Ligue 1 this weekend, while Roma gear up for Sunday's clash against Juventus.

Hull City now make first move to sign 4-3-3 manager who was on PL radars

Despite being nominated for the Championship Manager of the Year award and missing out on a place in the play-offs by just three points, Hull City dismissed Liam Rosenior in ruthless fashion. And now, they've reportedly made their first move to find a replacement.

Next Hull City manager

The decision to sack Rosenior has split opinions. On the one hand, he guided the Tigers to within one win of the play-off spots in his first full season, having helped them avoid relegation when he first arrived in the last campaign. But on the other, he ultimately failed to reward Hull's transfer backing – welcoming the likes of Fabio Carvalho on loan – by finishing outside of the top six.

Chairman and owner Acun Ilıcalı told the club's official website: “This has been the most difficult decision I have had to make as chairman of this wonderful football club. No matter how trying the circumstance, I have to remove personal sentiment from these moments and ensure the long-term vision of the club is at the centre of my thinking.

He then went on to reveal the reason behind the decision, saying: “However, it has become evident that our visions for the future are not aligned and I feel that now is the time to make a change. Our philosophy is clear, we will continue to drive this club forward, and whilst doing so I will continue to be open and transparent with our fans."

With that said, he has now turned his attention elsewhere. According to the Telegraph, Hull have made contact to sign Tim Walter with talks ongoing. The former Hamburg manager has been out of a job since leaving his former club in February and looked to be on the radar of Nottingham Forest at one stage, before ultimately missing out to Nuno Espirito Santo. Now he could get his chance in English football at Hull.

Walter brings plenty of experience

Where Rosenior brought youthful exuberance, Walter can bring important experience. The German, 48 years old, has been in management in some form since 2007 and has taken charge of Bayern Munich's youth side and the senior teams in Stuttgart and Hamburg.

Tim Walter for Hamburg.

What's more, Walter prefers a similar system to Rosenior, meaning that Hull may not lose the core of the style that impressed at times under their former boss. The German's 4-3-3 attacking formation isn't too dissimilar to Rosenior's 4-2-3-1 and his added experience could just make the difference between seventh and a place in the play-offs.

Only time will tell whether Hull made the right choice to part ways with their manager, especially after he was nominated for the Manager of the Season award. The last thing they need is to return entirely to square one, and fans may be looking towards Sunderland as a point of concern, after the Black Cats made a similarly surprising dismissal of Tony Mowbray before plummeting down the table.

Any progress made under Rosenior is one that Walter, or another option, simply have to build on to bridge the small gap to the likes of Norwich and West Brom next season.

Sam Curran tests negative for Covid-19 after sickness bout

Good news for England allrounder as he prepares to return to training after bug

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jul-2020Sam Curran has tested negative for Covid-19, after being forced to withdraw from England’s intra-squad three-day warm-up match at the Ageas Bowl through illness.Curran, who made a brisk 15 on the first day but did not get a chance to press his case for a Test place with the ball, has been self-isolating in his room at the team hotel after coming down with ‘sickness and diarrhoea’ on the second day of the match. He underwent a Covid test during the lunch interval on Thursday, and would have been required to spend a further seven days in isolation had it turned out to be positive, with implications for the rest of the squad ahead of the first Test against West Indies on July 8.However, he will now return to training over the next 24-48 hours but will continue to be closely monitored by the team doctor, Mark Wotherspoon.Curran will receive a further Covid-19 test on Sunday, along with the rest of the playing and management group. The news comes as a relief for the ECB, who had last week reported a total of 703 negative Covid tests at the Ageas Bowl and Emirates Old Trafford, the West Indies base, in the lead-up to the Test series. There will be concerns, however, if another sickness bug is making its way through the England squad, after the team’s build-up to the first Test in South Africa in December was ravaged by illness. There were some concerns about the health of Dan Lawrence, one of the likelier candidates to stand in for Joe Root during the first Test, who did not come out to bat in the top six in Team Buttler’s second innings at the Ageas Bowl, after a fluent fifty on the first day. However, the likelihood of any transmission has been reduced by the social-distancing measures being taken within the team environment, and a team spokesman confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Lawrence was fine.

Surrey release Michael Di Venuto from his contract early

Head coach allowed to seek fresh opportunities rather than return for truncated 2020 campaign

Surrey have announced that head coach Michael Di Venuto will not be returning to the club, even if county competition is able to resume later this summer. Di Venuto, who is currently in Australia and was contracted to Surrey until March 2021, will instead be allowed to look for a new position.Di Venuto led Surrey to the Championship title in 2018, but they fell short of a sustained defence the following year, while also struggling in the two white-ball competitions. He is currently at home in Tasmania – one of a number of county coaches left stranded on the other side of the world by the Covid-19 pandemic – and Surrey have taken the decision to part ways early, rather than expect Di Venuto to return to the UK for a truncated county schedule that will not begin before August at the earliest.”I would like to thank Diva for everything he gave to the role as head coach, his excellent work, the impact he had on the club and the relationship we have enjoyed as head coach and director of cricket,” Alec Stewart said.”Diva should feel very proud of the progress achieved since he arrived at the Kia Oval – a County Championship trophy, the number of players that have developed and earned England selection and he leaves the dressing room in a stronger position than when he arrived.”Di Venuto was appointed Surrey head coach in 2016, following the departure of Graham Ford. He had previously worked with Cricket Australia, following a lengthy playing career that had seen him win the Championship with Durham and also turn out for Derbyshire. As well as topping Division One two years ago – Surrey’s first Championship since 2002 – Di Venuto oversaw two appearances in the final of the Royal London Cup, alongside the promotion of a number of the club’s players to England colours, including Sam and Tom Curran, Ollie Pope, Rory Burns and Ben Foakes.”I have loved my time as head coach of Surrey,” Di Venuto said. “Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic I haven’t had the opportunity to finish the job that I started. I take with me some wonderful memories and friendships of my time at the Kia Oval.”With the help of the best director of cricket in the land, Alec Stewart, we put together an outstanding management team to give the players everything that they needed to help them become the best players they can be. There were plenty of ups and downs along the way but to see so many of our players develop into England cricketers and the team win the County Championship in 2018 are the obvious highlights during my time.”The squad is in a fantastic place right now, I wish the players, management and my successor all the best this season and in the years to come.”Surrey’s chairman, Richard Thompson, added: “We owe Diva a debt of gratitude for the huge impact he has made in the four years he has been our coach. Winning the County Championship for the first time in 16 years and helping develop more England cricketers for a generation is quite a legacy. This was clearly a very difficult decision, taken during quite exceptional times.”

Arteta should unleash 8/10 Arsenal star who can cause "chaos"

If there is one area in which Arsenal have been impressive this season, it is their form in front of goal. They are currently the top goalscorers in the Premier League, with 82 goals, two more than Manchester City.

What makes that number even more impressive is the fact that they have only created 98 big chances, and only missed 52. There have been seven other teams that have missed more big chances than that this season.

The goals have been evenly spread out, too. In all competitions, Arsenal have four players in double figures for goals; Bukayo Saka with 18, Leandro Trossard with 15, Kai Havertz with 12 and Martin Odegaard with 11.

Indeed, the signing of Havertz has been a revelation. Initially, fans were unsure if the £65m that Arsenal spent on the German was justified. With that being said, the former Chelsea man has had a great campaign and recently has settled in up front. He has 11 goal involvements in his last ten Premier League games.

Havertz’s emergence to becoming Arsenal’s first-choice centre-forward is certainly a positive. However, it raises the question of how Mikel Arteta's other option to lead the line could fit in against Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday, given his impressive exploits against them last time out.

Gabriel Jesus’ stats vs Tottenham

Last time out in the North London Derby, Arsenal drew 2-2 with Spurs in an enthralling game. Two goals from Son Heung-min cancelled out a Cristian Romero own goal and a penalty by Saka.

One of the best performances that day came from Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus. The former Manchester City man put in a superb showing, running tirelessly all day for his side, and was unlucky not to get himself on the scoresheet.

Football.London’s Chief Arsenal writer Kaya Kaynak gave Jesus an 8/10 rating for his performance that day, explaining how he was 'Arsenal's biggest threat' in the second half, and praising him for his “superb pressing”.

Indeed, the stats reflect the praise given to Jesus for his exploits against Spurs last time out. As per SofaScore, the 27-year-old won a superb eight-ground duels, bettered only by Saka and Destiny Udogie, and all three of his tackles.

On the ball, Jesus completed three out of the four dribbles he attempted, and registered two shots, including one on target, although the 27-year-old did miss one big chance.

How Jesus could fit in against Spurs

Interestingly, Arsenal’s number nine started on the left wing in the previous North London Derby, rather than as a centre-forward. He acted more as an inside forward, operating in the half-space and driving into the penalty area.

There is a chance that Mikel Arteta could start him in a similar role again this weekend. Considering Gabriel Martinelli's poor form this season, there is a chance Jesus starts out wide against Spurs again.

gabriel-jesus-arsenal-alexandre-lacazette-transfer-arteta-edu-lyon

Martinelli has scored just six goals and has four assists so far in 31 Premier League games this season. In contrast, his fellow Brazilian Jesus has four goals and four assists, although that is in far fewer games, just 24.

Arteta certainly thinks highly of his number nine, as he noted in an interview last September, as published by the Mail Online. When discussing the chaos that Jesus brings to the pitch, Arteta said “in certain areas of the pitch, I love it”, before explaining how beneficial it is that Jesus “creates space for others”.

There is no doubt that the kind of chaos Arteta is discussing here could be useful in a big game such as the North London Derby. Spurs are an energetic side, who like to play out from the back under Ange Postecoglou.

The intense pressing Jesus brings to the Gunners’ side could be a really important weapon against such a team. It remains to be seen whether Arteta will indeed start Jesus, but there is certainly merit to the idea and could provide Arsenal with the difference to get them over the line in a huge game.

Arteta can soon unleash wildcard who could help hand Arsenal the PL title

The Arsenal star could have a huge impact on the side.

Cricket Australia chief won't back down on drastic staff cuts

Kevin Roberts, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has faced questions from staff about the decisions to stand down all but a handful of employees on 80% wage cuts until July for a saving of only A$3 million in an organisation that has so far faced minimal disruption from the coronavirus pandemic. In an effort to defend CA’s recent decisions and the ways in which they have been communicated amidst waves of dismay from staff, the state associations, the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) and the game’s broadcast and corporate partners, Roberts spoke to staff and media in quick succession on Tuesday afternoon. He faced similar questions from each group, and in addition to defending the staff stand downs, Roberts is believed to have also conceded to staff that redundancies were a possibility after June 30.At the same time, it is understood there have been significant discussions around Australian cricket about whether to convene state association chief executives, chairs and the ACA under the umbrella of the Australian Cricket Council for alternative approaches to current and future issues. Such a move would serve effectively as a vote of no confidence in the way that Roberts has managed the past few weeks.ALSO READ: Hazlewood calls for Cricket Australia transparency but players prepared to ‘ride the lows’Insisting that the wage cuts were necessary as part of an estimated A$20 million in savings that the governing body had already made, Roberts showed no inclination to revisit a decision that is understood to have been first drafted in March as part of a range of measures to sustain the business. Roberts confirmed, too, that CA is paying its stood down staff the equivalent of JobKeeper (A$1500 per fortnight) because it is not eligible for the government payment as a result of not having actually lost any significant revenue since the pandemic hit towards the very end of the season.”It wasn’t an overreaction because we’re dealing with a situation that’s hitting us unfortunately at the low point of our cash cycle over four years,” Roberts said. “We reach a point in early September where if there’s more shocks as we’ve had over the last month or more, where our reserves are very thin and in fact effectively we’d chart a path to zero if we didn’t take drastic action.”Then you layer on top of that the possibility that the international season doesn’t go ahead, and that’s an issue of hundreds of millions of dollars. Albeit the timing is a little bit different in our season relative to the football codes, we’ve seen across the two major football codes they’ve done four things: one is to secure debt facilities, one is reduce their own costs as leagues, the next is to reduce their funding of clubs and the next is to negotiate a sensible resetting of player payments for the season.”So it’s no surprise to see that blue print rolling out across all sports and that we’re pursuing that as well. If we weren’t doing that, we would be managing this situation by looking in the rear vision mirror and that’s not what we’re charged to do. We’re charged to manage the situation that we’re presented with, and that which we see in the future, so we’re looking forward and taking those actions as we’re required to.”The financial situation at Cricket Australia has escalated in recent days•Getty Images

Roberts also insisted he still had the support of the CA board, the states and his own staff to continue to prepare for a wide range of possible scenarios for the game. The state associations debated and won a backdown from CA on the depth of cuts to their annual grants, from 45% to 25%, a back and forth that strongly suggests major reservations among CA’s owners about the way its management has handled events of recent weeks.”We are all across Australian cricket acknowledging that reductions might need to go to that level but that’s preemptive planning,” Roberts said of states. “What we need is a plan to take 25% of cricket Australia’s operating expenses out next financial year with a further plan to go deeper if need be and something similar with the states and territories. It follows the work around player payments where naturally you have a smaller reduction in player payments if the season goes ahead without crowds and a larger reduction in player payments if the season in part or in full were not to go ahead.”Speaking about his staff, Roberts maintained that the stand downs – while executives and a skeleton staff are retained on 80% of their usual salaries – needed to take place as part of the range of measures the board has taken in preparation for the possibility of losing revenue ahead of next summer.”I feel desperately for our people who have been stood down through this period and emphasised that to them. The pain our people are enduring who are being stood down from next week onwards is part of the motivation for us to navigate this situation as best we can,” Roberts said. “We didn’t start with the stand downs, what we started with was acknowledgement that most activities in cricket needed to pause as a result of the emerging situation, and when you pause those activities you have a lot of people who were previously working on those activities who aren’t required to work on them anymore.”I feel desperately for each and every one of them and I hate the fact we had to move to that after all of the fantastic progress we’ve made as an organisation and our culture, and the outstanding people that we’re so grateful to work with, I hate doing that. Unfortunately, it was an unavoidable piece of the puzzle.”
