The France international finally completed a switch to Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2024 after several transfer windows dominated by speculation regarding his future. A path was cleared for Mbappe to head for Spain when reaching the end of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe is yet to truly sparkle in Madrid, with seven goals recorded through 11 appearances, and appears to be prioritising club over country after making himself unavailable for Didier Deschamps’ latest France squad. Despite apparently nursing a knock, the 25-year-old started for Real against Villarreal.

WHAT EVRA SAID

Former Les Bleus star Patrice Evra has told of Mbappe boasting too much power for his standing in the French game: "If you call him up and he gets injured, you damage your relationship with [Florentino] Perez. Real Madrid aren't PSG. You can't afford to take that kind of risk. But honestly, you're the ones who've built up this legend around Mbappe. With all due respect to him, he's not on Benzema's level. He doesn't even reach Benzema's ankle right now."

Van Bronckhorst eyes reunion with "proper Rangers player" this summer

Whilst bringing new players in will be vital if Rangers are to improve next season, it now appears that one of their most promising talents is set to depart Ibrox this summer.

Rangers plotting busy transfer window

After missing out on the Scottish Premiership to Celtic, it is clear that new signings will be important if Rangers are to get the better of their city rivals next season.

One name linked with a move to Ibrox is FAR Rabat and Morocco U23 international Hamza Igamane. Rangers have reportedly agreed to sign the striker in a deal worth £1.7m with the transfer expected to be finalised before the player travels to the Olympics in Paris.

Rangers are also one of many clubs pushing to sign Hearts talisman Lawrence Shankland. The Glasgow-born centre-forward racked up a staggering 31 goals and eight assists in all competitions last season, making him a target for top sides in both Scotland and England.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

This summer is also likely to see a slew of outgoings at Ibrox. The most notable of these potential departures could well be Connor Goldson and James Tavernier. It has been reported that former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is eager to bring the duo to Al-Ettifaq this summer which would be a major blow for the Glasgow outfit.

Whilst losing Goldson and Tavernier would be far from ideal for the Ibrox faithful, it now appears that another Rangers star is being watched for a reunion with a former boss.

Van Bronckhorst wants Yilmaz reunion

As reported by Sport Witness, the Turkish media are stating that Besiktas have held talks to sign Rangers' defender Ridvan Yilmaz. This news follows reports that FC Nantes are keen on signing Besiktas' current left back Arthur Masuaku, meaing that they will be in need of reinforcements in this area.

The Turkish club are eager to use the funds raised by the sale of Masuaku to sign Yilmaz. with current Besiktas boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst personally sanctioning the deal. The Dutchman was the one who initially brought the 23-year-old to Ibrox from Galatasaray back in July 2022.

Rangers stars Fashion Sakala and Ridvan Yilmaz.

Following the £3.5million deal, Yilmaz has battled a number of injury issues during his time in a Rangers shirt. Despite this, the 23-year-old managed to overcome some of his issues making 32 appearances for the Glasgow outfit over the course of last season.

Speaking on his improvements over the last twelve months, former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson sang the praises of Yilmaz telling the press back in March: “The little man has made a huge impression ever since the winter break and has nailed down the left back berth for himself.

“He’s been a slow burner. And that can happen with any young player adjusting to life in a new country. But he’s a proper Rangers player now and I’m sure the manager will want him back fit as quickly as possible."

Following his recent uptick in form, many Rangers fans may be reluctant to let Yilmaz leave. Despite this, a reunion with the manager who first brought him to Scotland may be too good for the 23-year-old to turn down.

European giants make contact as "fantastic" Chelsea star now open to exit

After failing to qualify for the Champions League, Chelsea are now reportedly at risk of losing a star player before Enzo Maresca even has the chance to make his mark.

Chelsea transfer news

Despite the Blues' strong end to the Premier League season, their failure to finish inside the top four was enough for Todd Boehly to show Mauricio Pochettino the door at Stamford Bridge in controversial fashion. Since then, Maresca has left newly-promoted Leicester City for the London giants to become the latest manager to take on the challenge of steering a now somewhat steadied ship back towards its former glory.

Chelsea facing Havertz repeat with £35m star who could sign for Man City

The club are looking to raise funds to allow Maresca to invest in his new squad.

ByEthan Lamb Jun 17, 2024

Without a place in Europe's elite competition, however, welcoming fresh faces to help steer that ship becomes that much harder, as Chelsea have already found out in pursuit of Michael Olise. The Crystal Palace winger reportedly has a £60m release clause that can only be triggered by Champions League clubs, which instantly leaves Chelsea on the back foot in negotiations.

Meanwhile, without that Champions League place, keeping hold of star players also becomes increasingly difficult, especially if other clubs come calling in the way that one European giant reportedly has for one of Maresca's key men.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich have enquired about signing Levi Colwill, who would be open to joining the Bundesliga giants this summer. Chelsea are reportedly unwilling to let him go and their asking price is currently too high for Bayern, but the central defender remains on their shortlist nonetheless in a worrying situation for those at Stamford Bridge.

As the summer goes on, it will be interesting to see just how much Colwill wants the move and just how much Bayern push for his signature to create a further dilemma for Chelsea.

"Fantastic" Colwill has a decision to make

A homegrown talent, Colwill has quite the decision to make this summer amid interest from one of Europe's best. With Chelsea at a crossroads themselves, having gone through three managers in two seasons, the defender may be wise to jump ship if he cannot see a proper pathway under Maresca.

After Pochettino's praise last season, it's little surprise that even as Chelsea have struggled, the interest in Colwill remains. The former Chelsea boss told the official club website: "At the moment I need to see him and get to know him better. He is a fantastic talent of course.

"‘We were talking about the things that also the way that we can help improve his game in all areas. He is so relaxed, calm and I enjoy talking to him. He has great character and personality. I am so happy to have him in the squad and to have this opportunity to work together."

It's now Maresca who will be hoping to benefit from that talent, but with Bayern interested, the Blues could yet be in for a frustrating start to the summer.

Crystal Palace now working to convince "great" star to leave Sunderland

After a disappointing season, Sunderland could be in for more bad news with a Premier League sporting director now attempting to convince one Black Cats star to leave this summer.

Sunderland transfer news

It's been a frustrating few months for those at the Stadium of Light, who are facing the consequences for their Michael Beale experiment, having parted ways with Tony Mowbray when they were competing among the Championship play-off spots. Finishing in the bottom half as a result of that decision, the Black Cats remain without a permanent manager heading into the summer transfer window.

Sunderland in talks to sign "incredible" partner for Clarke

Sunderland could finally strike gold and sign a prolific striker with this summer buy.

ByKelan Sarson May 30, 2024

The likes of Paul Heckingbottom, Will Still, Liam Rosenior and Bo Svensson have all been mentioned, but Sunderland are yet to make their pick. Rosenior is, of course, a particularly interesting option given that he was nominated for the Championship's Manager of the Season before being sacked by Hull City for failing to guide them into the top six. Their loss could now be Sunderland's gain, however.

As a fresh face emerges in the dugout though, a familiar face could be heading in the other direction and out the door this summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman is working to convince Jobe Bellingham to leave Sunderland and join Crystal Palace, with Brentford also reportedly interested in the young midfielder.

With Jude Bellingham starring for Real Madrid, it is Jobe who now has the chance to steal the headlines and take his first steps into the Premier League this summer.

Sunderland must work to keep "great" Bellingham

It may be easier said than done, but Sunderland must do everything in their power to keep hold of Bellingham this summer. One way they should be focusing on doing just that is by finally appointing a permanent manager, handing players such as Bellingham a clear project and path to follow rather than the current unpredictability within the Stadium of Light.

Not many will be surprised by the Premier League interest in the 18-year-old, including former boss Mowbray, who was instantly full of praise for Bellingham at the start of his Sunderland career, telling The Northern Echo: "He acts like a seasoned pro, and demands standards, even in small sided games he wants to win.

"You can see he has a very focused driven thought pattern on where he is going and how he is going to get there. And that is to try to be excellent in everything you do. It’s a great mentality. It helps our team to have someone so young."

Losing a player with such mentality who still has plenty more levels to reach would be a major blow for the Black Cats, but they could face an uphill battle if Palace push on for Bellingham's signature this summer.

'That's awful mate'- VAR audio of Bruno Fernandes red card released as ex-referee Howard Webb explains where officials made 'slight error'

Fernandes was shown a straight red card after flinging a boot out towards Tottenham's James Maddison in last month's clash at Old Trafford, catching the England midfielder on the shin. The challenge was deemed serious foul play by referee Chris Kavanagh and the VAR Peter Bankes, who didn't step in to change the on-pitch decision.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Manchester United were successful in their appeal of Fernandes' red card and the three-match ban that he was set to face. The controversial incident, which came while the Red Devils trailed Spurs 1-0 in their eventual 3-0 defeat, was the main talking point on the most recent Match Officials Mic'd Up, in which PGMOL chief Howard Webb joined Michael Owen to dissect the Portuguese's sending off and the decision-making of Kavanagh and Bankes. Webb, a former Premier League referee, believes the VAR should have sent Kavanagh to the monitor to reverse his decision.

  • WHAT THE VAR SAID

An assistant referee reacted first, saying: "That's awful mate, that's a red card for me. Red card, 100 per cent."

Bankes then says: "It's a high foot. It's not studs. It's shin height. Does he rake down? It's a deliberate ace. He's made no attempt to play the ball."

The assistant VAR then acknowledges Fernandes' slip but adds the Portugal star makes an another movement that leads to the contract with Maddison. "There is a slip but then there's an action which makes contact with the shin," he says.

  • WHAT HOWARD WEBB SAID

"It was [a mistake]. We hear on the audio that the assistant said it was a red card offence and the referee takes that advice," Webb said. "The contact is high but Fernandes slips first. It's not an attempt on the ball but from the assistants' view it looks like studs go in – but it's a slight error. There's no driving the foot into the opponent, it's more of a tripping action. VAR should have sent the referee to the screen."

New concern for Leeds as £3.5m per year ace the latest name who could leave

Yet another one of Daniel Farke's stars could be leaving Elland Road this summer amid "big" interest in their talents from elsewhere, it has emerged.

Leeds braced for fire sale

Following the news that Leeds United would be playing Championship football again next season, there has been a queue forming at the Elland Road exit door if the rumour mill is to be believed. There is concern that Leeds may have to have something akin to a fire sale in a bid to raise money, with the club still owing £73.5m in outstanding transfer fees this summer alone.

May 30, 2024

According to reports, they could be forced to raise over £100m from player sales before they can even turn their attentions to potential additions that aren't loan signings or free agents.

Most likely to leave is Crysencio Summerville, with the Championship player of the year attracting attention from across the Premier League and Europe, while talented teenager Archie Gray is another who has caught the attention of heavyweights.

Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville

Loanees Marc Roca, Jack Harrison, Max Wober, Diego Llorente, Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen are all also expected to be deemed surplus to requirements when they return from their spells away this summer, though in the case of Harrison and Roca there are options to let them leave on loan once more this summer.

Now, a new name has been thrown into the fray, with "big" interest in his services ahead of the new season.

Leeds forward in demand

That comes in the shape of Georginio Rutter, who has thrived in England's second tier this season after flattering to deceive in the Premier League. Signed for a massive £45m back in January 2023, the Hoffenheim man was earmarked as one for the future, to the point that he managed just a single Premier League start as Leeds were relegated.

In the Championship though, it has been a different story. Under Daniel Farke, he has started the last 47 Championship games (including play-offs), missing the opening day of the season and being sent on as a substitute in the second game of the campaign.

In that time, he has managed to find the net on seven occasions, but has provided a massive 17 assists for teammates as he helped Leeds back into the playoffs.

After one particularly impressive performance against Hull City in April, BBC Radio Leeds' Adam Pope dubbed him "immense" and praised his work rate in particular.

"He was immense.

"I think he took three players out of the game just with a switch of the hips – Shakira style. Before the game Neil Redfearn specifically said it will be so important what Georginio Rutter does without the ball.

"From minute one defensively he was in at right-back helping Sam Byram out, helping Joe Rodon out. I thought he was incredible."

Now though, he could be shown the exit door, with Football Insider claiming that the Frenchman has received "big" interest since the play-off heartbreak.

Should the financial issues be sorted with other sales, there will be little need for the Whites to agree to let Rutter leave, with the youngster still having four years left to run on his £3.5m a year deal at Elland Road.

Despite the attacker being still just 22-years-old, there is little chance that Leeds will recoup anything near the £45m shalled out to sign him should they be forced into a sale, but should his departure mean that they could hold onto the likes of Archie Gray, they may deem it a loss worth taking.

Chelsea must rue selling superstar who’s just as influential as Palmer

The Chelsea faifthul have had the privilege of watching numerous superstars play for their club, with the likes of Eden Hazard, Didier Drogba, and Frank Lampard coming to mind.

However, the latest individual to join that list is without doubt Cole Palmer, who exceeded all expectations during his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer

The former Manchester City player was the heartbeat of the Blues, ending the season with 22 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League alone.

However, there was once a young Chelsea ace who got away, and today, he would’ve been just as influential as Palmer.

The fee that Chelsea sold Jamal Musiala for

At the age of seven, Jamal Musiala moved to England from his birthplace, Germany, and by the age of eight, he had become a Chelsea academy player.

However, Football London said that the attacking midfielder failed to see a pathway into the first team, and Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich ‘presented a clear developmental path compared to Cobham.’

Bayern Munich forward Jamal Musiala.

Having already made up his mind, the German international then left Chelsea at the age of 16 to join Bayern Munich for just £170k, as per the Daily Mail.

Despite Chelsea offering him a new contract, the club had to settle for having a 20% sell-on clause in his contract at Bayern instead, with what could prove to be one of the biggest howlers in the club’s recent history.

Jamal Musiala’s 23/24 campaign

Since his departure from England, it’s fair to say that Musiala has developed into one of the most promising footballers on the entire globe.

If it already hadn’t by now, his name has reached those outside of Germany thanks to an incredible start to the 2024 European Championships, where he’s one of two players to have scored in both games so far.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

It’s fantastic to see the 21-year-old thrive on one of the biggest stages, especially given that his 2023/24 campaign was hindered by numerous small injuries that made him miss 12 matches.

Regardless of his setbacks, the German international was still simply superb in the league, boasting a record of ten goals and six assists in just 20 starts under Thomas Tuchel.

Nonetheless, as you can see from the table, Musiala had the potential to be just as influential as Palmer was last season, which is quite remarkable.

Just like the England international, Bayern’s number ten has the technical class to operate out wide or in central zones, but most importantly, he can win a game on his own, as shown by his goals and assists.

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala.

Furthermore, Musiala has an unpredictable element to his game that enables him to cause chaos against the opposition, with his ability to weave past defenders easily being his trademark move.

The former Chelsea academy star cannot be afforded any space whatsoever, as the outcome is almost guaranteed to be costly, and the same can be said for Palmer.

Musiala’s ability to produce endless amounts of creativity regardless of the game state is what makes him “out of this world,” as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, and it’s fair to say that he’s the catalyst for the majority of attacking situations at Bayern.

Sadly, this is what Chelsea missed out on, and a duo of Palmer and Musiala could have developed into one of the deadliest partnerships to have graced the Premier League.

Is Alex Carey set to leave the Adelaide Strikers?

The Australia keeper says there will be “an announcement in the coming days”

Alex Malcolm17-Nov-2020Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey may be on the move to a new BBL franchise.Carey’s performances for the Adelaide Strikers, particularly in their title-winning season in 2017-18, played a major part in his ascension to the national side where he has been vice-captain at various times. But it is unclear whether he will play for the Strikers after Australia’s limited-overs series against India and Australia A’s tour match against the Indians, for which he has also been selected.ESPNcricinfo understands that as late as last week Carey had not signed with the Strikers, and when pressed on whether he would return to play for Adelaide he gave a cryptic response.”I won’t give anything away at the moment,” Carey said, speaking from quarantine in Sydney, having just returned from the IPL where he played three games for the Delhi Capitals. “Watch this space. There should be an announcement in the coming days and I’m really excited to play in the Big Bash this year.”After the three-day game I’ll join the franchise that I’m going to. Watch this space.”Meanwhile, Carey says he has been given no guarantee that he will get his Australia T20 spot back, after being dropped for the the last T20I on the tour of England in August. With Carey sitting out, Matthew Wade took the gloves for the game in Southampton, and opened the batting while David Warner was rested.Carey returned to the side for the ODI series and made a series-winning century in the final ODI at Old Trafford.”I’m not sure what the line-up would be,” Carey said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t a successful T20 series for us in England which always allows some doors to open in terms of selection. I don’t have any indication at this stage. But I’m fully focused and excited about what’s going to be a huge ODI series.”Alex Carey clings on to a swirling catch•BCCIIt was the second time Carey had been dropped from the T20 side in the last two years. He was also left out of the two-match series in India in 2019 when Peter Handscomb took the gloves. He returned to play in all six T20Is last summer but did not bat in any match due to the dominance of Australia’s top order. He then managed scores of 27, 14, and 7 on the tour of South Africa before scores of just 1 and 2 in the first two games in England forced the selectors’ hand.”My numbers in the past few T20s probably allowed the opening of the door for Wadey to come in and Davey (Warner) obviously didn’t play that last T20 and Wadey got an opportunity opening the batting,” Carey said.”Unfortunately, I never like getting left out of any team but it’s allowed me to go away and develop, if it is a lower order role or if it’s back up the top of the order, doing everything I can to get back into that team is something I want to do. But again, since then I felt like I finished off that UK tour really strongly and took a lot out of the IPL working with Punter (Ricky Ponting). We’ll see how this summer starts with both my form and selection.”Carey’s family is also in limbo at the moment with his wife and young son forced to flee Adelaide to Sydney at short notice yesterday after a spike in Covid-19 cases in Adelaide changed travel protocols for people attempting to leave South Australia. He has not seen his family since leaving for England in August and won’t be reunited with them until he has completed the mandatory 14-day quarantine that applies to international travellers, which concludes on November 26.It is further evidence of the enormous complexity of the situation for Cricket Australia, the BCCI, the players, and staff.
