  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After Salah posted a photo on X of himself, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, all of whom are in the last six months of their Liverpool contracts, Carragher gave his take on the matter. He urged the Egyptian and the England international to "take a leaf out of" Van Dijk's book amid the ongoing uncertainty over their Anfield futures. That led Salah to poke fun at the Sky Sports pundit on Monday.

  • WHAT JAMIE CARRAGHER AND MOHAMED SALAH SAID

“Oh I don’t know,” Carragher said when asked what he made of Salah’s post. “I would say Virgil van Dijk has come out of this whole situation, as the captain of the club, in a higher esteem for me. The way he’s conducted himself, his performances on the pitch, the way he’s led the team. He hasn’t got involved in too much around this. Rather than speak about Trent Alexander-Arnold or Mo Salah, I’d probably like to pay tribute to Virgil van Dijk. He’s come across as a real statesman the way he’s handled it. He’s been asked questions, he’s knocked it away. He’s here to win the league, he wants to do his utmost for Liverpool. Fingers crossed he signs. The other two could maybe look at Virgil van Dijk and take a leaf out of his book.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is the latest chapter in what appears to be an ongoing feud between Carragher and Salah. The former accused the latter of being "selfish" for how he was handling his contract situation with Liverpool late last year and Salah has hit back since then. This may go on until the 32-year-old either commits to leaving or signing a new deal. Incidentally, Carragher has singled out Van Dijk for praise as he has been the least vocal about his contract situation, with Salah linked with an exit and Alexander-Arnold wanted by Real Madrid.

Arsenal in talks with "exciting" £84m target and his reps ahead of January

Arsenal are in talks with a prestigious player and his agents ahead of January, with transfer chief Edu Gaspar apparently considering the prospect of a major signing at the Emirates Stadium this winter.

Arsenal's rumoured transfer plans for 2025

Edu and his recruitment team are constantly at work when it comes to transfers, and it is believed they have one eye set on 2025, as the club maintain their efforts to upgrade Arteta’s squad where needed.

The Premier League title hopefuls have been unlucky when it comes to their latest summer recruits, with midfielder Mikel Merino out injured for weeks after fracturing his shoulder in training. Meanwhile, centre-back Riccardo Calafiori, who signed for £42 million from Bologna, was also forced to sit out of their North London Derby win over Tottenham on Sunday.

Arsenal spent around £100 million on their summer signings of Merino, Calafiori, David Raya, Neto and Raheem Sterling – reinforcing multiple areas of Arteta’s squad – but the ever-increasing demands of top-flight football mean elite sides require strength in depth to compete at the highest level.

However, that isn’t to say every player isn’t hand-picked with the utmost care, as Edu explained earlier this year in an interview with Brazilian news outlet Estadao.

“You can’t sign for the sake of signing. It has to be a process that takes weeks and weeks,” said Edu on Arsenal’s transfer policy.

“On my desk, I have reports of over 180 pages on one player. It’s really detailed stuff. Physical, technical, mental profile, whether he has Premier League experience, whether he’ll be able to adapt. Everything. We analyse our deficiencies, where we can improve, where we can invest and then we go in search of that new name. We’ve been discussing what I’m going to do now since January. It’s not my decision or Mikel’s. It’s a group decision.”

Ahead of January, the club have already been linked with a few interesting names. It is believed that Arsenal are targeting Lille striker Jonathan David, who could be available for a cut-price winter fee, considering his contract expires next summer.

Edu is also monitoring Leroy Sane, with his Bayern Munich deal also running out in 2025, and he isn’t the only star from Bavaria being watched over by Emirates Stadium transfer chiefs.

A new forward could well be on the agenda for next year going by recent reports, and a familiar name who remains in their thinking is Sporting Lisbon sensation Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal in talks with Viktor Gyokeres and his reps ahead of January

Gyokeres was a rumoured Arsenal summer target, with reports heavily linking the Swede to north London. Now, TEAMtalk have an update on their interest, and the outlet claims that Arsenal talks are “underway” with Gyokeres and his representatives, as Edu ponders a “blockbuster” January transfer.

The 26-year-old, who has started 2024/2025 in fine form with nine goals and three assists in seven appearances, won’t come cheap – as Sporting maintain their stance that interested clubs will need to pay his £84 million release clause.

Gyokeres is arguably Europe’s most in-form striker right now, alongside City superstar Erling Haaland and Bayern’s Harry Kane, so it is little wonder the Primeira Liga side won’t let him leave on the cheap. Pundit John Wenham has called the towering forward a potential “exciting signing” for suitors, and he’d certainly give Kai Havertz some serious competition for a place up front in Arteta’s starting line up.

Their next Fellows: Meet West Brom’s new rising star in the academy

West Bromwich Albion always knew, that regardless of what transpired on transfer deadline day, that they would be fine progressing forward in the Championship.

Losing the likes of Cedric Kipre, Okay Yokuslu, Conor Townsend and Brandon Thomas-Asante hadn't dramatically impacted the team spirit at the Hawthorns whatsoever, with the Baggies just soldiering on without their former star players, knowing that they're in safe hands with Carlos Corberan at the helm.

The late interest in Tom Fellows

There was a real concern in the air that Tom Fellows was going to be the next to jump ship late on in the transfer window.

Indeed, there was talk that Ipswich Town and Southampton were enamoured by the tricky winger after a bright start to the new campaign and could have made late moves.

Fortunately, the young Baggie stayed put in the Midlands and West Brom live to tell another tale.

Even if the homegrown talent had exited the building, West Brom would have survived and could well have given another youngster a chance in the senior spotlight down the right wing instead.

Akeel Higgins' numbers at youth level

Putting pen to paper on a professional deal at the West Midlands club just last month, 19-year-old Akeel Higgins could be the next rising star to make the cut in the men's team soon like Fellows.

The Birmingham-born teenager has impressed those in West Brom circles with his output the last two seasons playing in the Premier League 2, with the 22/23 campaign at this youth level even seeing him play alongside the now-established first-team presence before his breakthrough moment came about.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

Higgins bagged four goals and picked up two assists from 12 league outings that campaign, before finding his minutes had been increased for the youthful Baggies the season after, with eight more appearances handed to him.

In total, the 19-year-old has posted five goals and four assists from 34 total contests for the U21s, with Higgins now itching to shine in the senior team too, away from the comforts of youth football.

He has made the substitutes bench once or twice under Corberan and has even made one professional appearance for his boyhood club in the FA Cup when he was given a 45-minute run-out against Aldershot Town last season.

Higgins will have to remain patient and hope he can excel in making the step-up soon, with Fellows never looking back when he shot up to the senior fold.

How Higgins could become the next Fellows

Fellows was equally known to be a top performer at Premier League 2 level before going on to become a top performer in the Championship. Ineed, he registered eerily similar numbers for the U21s when compared with Higgins.

The West Brom number 31 tallied up two goals and five assists from 26 games for the U21s, with Higgins actually bettering Fellows' output by two in the same age bracket.

Of course, being able to make that leap into the first-team and make it look effortless after playing only youth football is a tricky one to traverse, but Fellows took to the pressures of Championship football like a duck to water last campaign, with five goals and four assists managed in all competitions under Corberan's watchful eye.

The youngster did benefit from a loan spell away at Crawley Town during his development in the U21 structure, with Higgins perhaps looking for a formative stint away from the club lower down the EFL soon, to also prove himself.

This campaign to date, Fellows' importance to the cause has only increased, with three assists managed already this campaign from just three league matches, as the 21-year-old continues to grow in confidence and stature in the men's set-up.

Higgins will want to follow his teammate's upward trajectory, as the Baggies look to uncover more talents in their Academy similar to Fellows, to ensure the future is bright at the West Midlands outfit.

Conte wanted Spurs to sign star now worth £62m but got Richarlison instead

Tottenham Hotspur are a club that have been blessed with a number of seriously talented players over the years.

The likes of Luka Modrić and Gareth Bale wowed fans in the early 2010s, Harry Kane broke through just a few years later, and Son Heung-min is now captaining the side and can still look incredibly dangerous at times.

However, the Lilywhites have also had their fair share of less successful signings over the years, and while there is still time to turn it around, Richarlison looks like he might be the club’s latest big-money flop.

Richarlison in anguish for Tottenham

What makes it worse is that just a few months before they signed the Brazilian, Antonio Conte was pushing the club to secure the services of a player who’s been on fire this season.

Richarlison's Spurs career

In June 2022, Tottenham spent a whopping £60m on Everton forward Richarlison, who had looked like a sensational talent for the Toffees over the last few years.

In all, the Brazilian attacker scored 53 goals and provided 13 assists in 152 appearances for the Merseysiders before moving down south, but unfortunately for the Lilywhites, his form did not follow him.

The 27-year-old’s first campaign in the capital saw him score just three goals and provide four assists in 25 appearances. While he did improve last year, racking up 12 goals and four assists in 31 games, it would be fair to say he has flattered to deceive so far.

However, while there is still time for him to improve, it does look like Postecoglou and Co have given up on him ever becoming the club’s starting number nine, as they splashed £65m on Dominic Solanke in the summer.

So, it’s hard to deny that when his fee and impact are taken into account, Richarlison’s move to Tottenham has been a failure, one made worse by the fact that a player the club tried to sign first is now tearing it up for a rival.

Spurs' failed pursuit of Luis Diaz

Yes, in the January transfer window, about six months before they signed Richarlison, Spurs were gunning to secure the services of Colombian international Luis Diaz.

According to an article from the Guardian at the time, Conte wanted to strengthen his team, and the then Porto star was one of the club’s key targets, so much so, in fact, that they made a £37.6m offer, which the club rejected.

Unfortunately for the North Londoners, this forced Liverpool into action, and just a few days later, they signed the tricky winger for an initial fee of £37.5m with £12.5m in further add-ons.

Since then, the 27-year-old dynamo has been through an awful lot on and off the pitch, and while there were some questions over his ability at points last season, he has started this year like a house on fire.

So far, the Barrancas-born star has scored five goals and provided one assist in just six games.

Unsurprisingly, such incredible form has seen his valuation soar as well, with Transfermarkt now valuing him at around €75m, which is about £62m.

Ultimately, while all clubs miss out on transfer targets, Diaz would have been sensational under Postecoglou, and while Richarlison could eventually prove to be worth his £60m fee, it feels like that ship has well and truly sailed now.

Txiki considering £83m Man City bid to sign "exceptional" big name player

Manchester City are considering tabling a huge £83m+ offer for an “exceptional” new attacker, according to an eye-catching new transfer report.

Man City still top after Arsenal drama

Pep Guardiola’s side played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, as they just about managed to stay top of the Premier League table. Having taken the lead through a brilliant Erling Haaland goal, things unravelled for City when Rodri picked up what looked like a serious injury. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel turned the game on its head, but thankfully, John Stones equalised in the dying seconds after a painful second half.

It means the Cityzens top the pile by a point ahead of Liverpool and Aston Villa, as well as retaining their two-point advantage over Arsenal, with Guardiola’s men still very much the team to beat in the title race this season.

Away from the on-pitch action, players continue to be linked with moves to the Etihad, with 17-year-old Sporting CP ace Geovany Quenda reportedly being eyed up as a long-term replacement for Bernardo Silva. Meanwhile, Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo has been backed to move to City in a swap deal involving Haaland, but it would surely be a shock if the striker left any time soon.

Man City considering £83m+ bid for Musiala

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester City are weighing up making an £83m+ bid for Bayern Munich superstar Jamal Musiala, having been linked with him during the summer transfer window.

The Premier League champions are said to be “firmly in the race” to snap up the Germany international, with Real Madrid providing stern competition. It is the Blues who are described as the “most informed” team in the report, however, suggesting Txiki Begiristain stands a good chance of getting his man.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

Musiala is one of the world’s most exciting young players currently, so the idea of him joining Guardiola at City is so exciting. The 21-year-old already has three goals in four appearances in the Bundesliga this season, while Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has heaped praise on him.

“Jamal Musiala is a world-class player, an exceptional player. Jamal is a player that spectators go to the stadium for because of the way he plays. He can decide games, he’s an absolute team player. He is an exceptional player. He can become one of the best players in the world. Both FC Bayern and Germany are lucky to have him.”

Meanwhile, Ilkay Gundogan is believed to want Musiala with him at City, following his return to the club on loan from Barca, and there really are few negatives to them snapping him up.

Worse than Dias: Pep must drop 3/10 Man City star who had a "stinker"

The Cityzens defender could find himself out of the team after that performance.

1 ByDan Emery Sep 22, 2024

Assuming he avoids serious injury, there is no reason why the Bayern maestro can’t go on to have a legendary career, and he would be an upgrade on the likes of Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish on the left wing, given his status as a truly world-class footballer with years ahead of him.

Arsenal offered £50m Kingsley Coman alternative who wants to join Arteta

Arsenal have been offered a £50 million alternative to Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman, and it is believed he is keen on joining Mikel Arteta's side in north London.

Multiple reports have indicated that Coman, who could well be on the move from Bayern before 11pm tonight, is on Arsenal's radar heading into this transfer deadline day.

The Frenchman has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal, and it is believed La Liga giants Barcelona are considering a late swoop for Coman alongside Arsenal. Edu Gaspar and co may want to bring in a new winger to compete with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, according to Sky Sports, so this could be one to watch heading into the last day of this summer window.

"Arsenal are one of many clubs who have explored the conditions of a deal for Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman," said Sheth.

"It's understood the club may want to bring in another winger to compete with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli before Friday's deadline. Barcelona have also enquired about Coman but a deal would be difficult given their financial issues.

"Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have made an offer, as the player assesses all his options. Staying at Bayern has also not been ruled out."

There are also reports that Coman has been offered out to Arsenal this summer, but according to journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent, Edu and Arteta have the chance to bring in a very interesting alternative to the 28-year-old.

Arsenal offered late chance to sign Raheem Sterling

Indeed, he writes that Raheem Sterling is a player being floated in Arsenal's direction, as the £50m England international seeks an escape route out of Stamford Bridge.

Sterling has been offered to Arsenal, as per Delaney, and the 29-year-old is believed to be keen on reuniting with Arteta at the Emirates Stadium – following their time together at Man City.

Arteta is said to be a big fan of the forward and his personality as well, with Arsenal now weighing up a cut-price late move for Sterling. However, a lot could hinge on the player's willingness to take a wage cut.

Arsenal are unlikely to go above £150,000-per-week in terms of a salary offer, which would be far below what he's currently earning at Chelsea.

"I know the special qualities of the player, the consistency, physicality, the finishing," said Pep Guardiola on Sterling all the way back in 2019.

"For the second goal against West Ham the control was not good but the finish good, the third goal was really good. He is in his first days playing as a striker but for me striker will be an incredible position for him, but he can play in three positions up front."

Dane van Niekerk fifty sees Oval Invicibles home after Tash Farrant restricts Birmingham Phoenix

Visitors master run-chase at Edgbaston with skipper’s 67* as she and Farrant share five wickets

ECB Reporters Network04-Aug-2021Oval Invincibles Women cranked up their Hundred challenge with a crunching eight-wicket victory over Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston.Invincibles captain Dane van Niekerk led from the front with bat and ball as her side recorded their third victory of the campaign. An excellent bowling performance by the Invincibles restricted the Phoenix to 129 for 9. Only Erin Burns, with 45 off 28 balls, found any fluency against a well-directed attack in which van Niekerk took 2 for 16 from 20 balls and Tash Farrant took 3 for 23 from 20, the latter claiming Player of the Match honours. The Invincibles then reached 133 for 2 with three balls to spare, powered by an opening stand of 90 between van Niekerk, who was unbeaten with 67 off 51 balls, and Georgia Adams, who scored 42 off 30.The Invincibles are right back on the front foot in the qualification race but the Phoenix are now under serious pressure. They have struggled to cope with the withdrawal of big-name players just before the tournament began but need to find some answers quickly after winning just one of five games. The Phoenix chose to bat but just one run came from the first nine balls from Alice Capsey and Farrant. Shafali Verma, who scored a run-a-ball 16, threatened briefly but fell to Eva Gray and Phoenix hopes took another jolt when skipper Amy Jones was stumped by Sarah Bryce off van Niekerk.Burns took the attack to the Invincibles and struck seven on the way to scoring 45 out of the next 59 runs but then attacked Danielle Gregory once too often and sent up a catch to Grace Gibbs. It was left to Issy Wong, Gwenan Davies and Kirstie Gordon to eke the total upwards with a combined 33 from 25 balls. The Invincibles’ reply was launched in impressive fashion by Adams and van Niekerk. The latter hit four of her first ten balls for four and when Adams hoisted Abtaha Maqsood to the long off boundary, the opening stand had passed 50 in 41 balls.Dropped catches added to the Phoenix woes and Adams was reprieved twice on the way to 42 with five fours and a six before she chipped Gordon to extra cover and a catch finally stuck. It was far too late to affect the result though, as van Niekerk passed 50 in 40 balls and her side eased home with greater comfort than three balls to spare suggests.

Hampshire kept alive their flickering hopes of reaching the Vitality Blast quarter-finals beating Essex by 18 runs to wrap up a third successive victory in the first match of a double-header at the Ageas Bowl.Essex looked on course to chase down the 172-run target after England batsman Dan Lawrence and Tom Westley put on 80 for the second wicket, only for Hampshire’s bowlers to claw back control as the Eagles lost nine wickets for just 68 runs to be bowled out for 153.Hampshire started the match well after winning the toss, with James Vince, fresh from his fine century for England against Pakistan, continuing from where he left off at Edgbaston with a superb 63 that included eight boundaries and a six. Vince and D’Arcy Short put on 69 after eight overs, laying the foundations for a potentially huge target. However, the Eagles fought back well when Aron Nijjar dismissed Short and Liam Dawson inside three balls to slow down the home side’s progress.Vince continued to score freely and put on a 56 with Colin de Grandhomme before the Hampshire skipper mistimed a big shot over mid-off off spinner Simon Harmer and caught in the deep by Jimmy Neesham.De Grandhomme fell for 34 when the veteran Ryan ten Doeschate took a sharp catch off Sam Cook’s bowling in the 16th over as the Hawks’.hopes of passing the 180-mark took a huge dent. The outstanding Harmer and Nijjar continued to slow down the scoring with wickets falling regularly as Joe Weatherley, Chris Wood and James Fuller all exited cheaply.Lewis McManus thumped two huge sixes in the final two overs to help his side to a decent total despite the Hawks losing two wickets in the final over to Cook..Wood struck in the first over of the Essex innings, dismissing former Hampshire wicket-keeper Adam Wheater for a second-ball duck, before Lawrence and Westley steadied the ship. But Westley, who reached 39 almost effortlessly, was then deceived by the flight of a Mason Crane ball and McManus whipped off his bails for a smart stumping.Dawson and Short continued the good work by the spinners with the wickets of the dangerous Neesham and Michael Pepper for single-figure scores.Crane struck again to dismiss ten Doeschate for nine when he holed out to James Fuller after 15 runs had been scored from the first five balls of the leg-spinner’s over. But Essex’s hopes of victory dissipated when Lawrence departed for 60 after he gloved Scott Currie to McManus, who claimed his third victim. With 31 needed from the last two overs, Essex fell well short with Brad Wheal taking two wickets in as many balls to dismiss Essex with four deliveries to spare.
