Arsenal "offering" £83m for English forward with transfer possible

Arsenal are looking at new forward options ahead of the summer transfer market, with Mikel Arteta’s side now believed to be in contention for a homegrown, marquee attacker.

Arsenal identifying transfer targets before next season

The Premier League title race is out of Arsenal’s hands, and while there is still an outside hope they could catch Liverpool amid the Reds’ drop in form, the odds are stacked against Arteta’s injury-ridden side.

Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are both out for the rest of this season after sustaining long-term injuries, while Arteta is also waiting to have both Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka back in contention for their final run of matches.

This has left Arsenal short of top-quality options in the final third, with Arteta forced to deploy a front three of Leandro Trossard, Raheem Sterling and Ethan Nwaneri in their last Premier League clash against Leicester City.

Emergency striker Mikel Merino saved the day with a dramatic brace in the final 10 minutes after coming off Arteta’s bench, and the Gunners board will be very keen to ensure they won’t have to resort to such desperate measures next season.

Arsenal are believed to be shortlisting forward targets ahead of another potential title challenge next term as the club look to bolster Arteta’s options.

Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Juventus star Dušan Vlahović, Sporting CP sensation Viktor Gyokeres, Eintracht Frankfurt gem Hugo Ekitiké, ex-Liverpool talisman Roberto Firmino and even Real Madrid duo Endrick and Rodrygo are all strikers linked with moves to Arsenal following reports from this last week alone.

Arsenal "said to be offering £83m" for Borussia Dortmund forward Jamie Gittens

Now, as per reliable Bundesliga insider Christian Falk, Borussia Dortmund forward Jamie Gittens is attracting interest from the Emirates as a potential wide alternative to the likes of Saka, Martinelli and Trossard.

The England Under-21 international has been in fantastic form this campaign, scoring 11 goals and registering 4 assists across all competitions, with Premier League sides taking note.

Arteta’s side are among them, with Falk claiming that Arsenal are “said to be offering” €100m (£83m) for Gittens.

“Dortmund crashed in the league, the Champions League is getting further and further away, and with that, the income from the Champions League next season,” said Falk on SportBILD (via Sport Witness).

“They have to win it to be in it again. If they miss out, they’ll have to sell players and Gittens is highly regarded. Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are said to be offering €100m. You have to say that would be nice money.”

Falk went on to add that “a transfer for Gittens could happen”.

The 20-year-old played for both Man City and Chelsea’s academies before pursuing regular first-team football at Dortmund. Former BVB manager Nuri Şahin praised Gittens’ development this season, calling him a “very important” player.

“He’s a very important player for us,” said Sahin.

“Jamie himself wants to take the next step, and we want him to take that step. Now he’s scoring goals and playing more mature football.”

American ownership in European clubs is controversial, but expertly executed PR by Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, Tom Brady and J.J. Watt exemplifies how it can work

Wrexham, Burnley and Birmingham have all been promoted, with celebrity owners capitalizing on success with aplomb

Todd Boehly wanted 12 players on the pitch. At least, that's what we were told. It was 2022, and with Cristiano Ronaldo out at Manchester United, the American businessman saw an opportunity. He tried to piece together a picture for then-manager Thomas Tuchel. Ronaldo, he surmised, could play in Chelsea's front line – the final piece of the puzzle.

What he didn't realize is that, after piecing together the formation, Boehly has 12 players on the pitch, a unique but yet-to-be-tried 4-4-3 formation.

That tale has been a beating stick to bash American owners by English fans in recent years. Americans don't know anything about football. They are ruining sport. They don't even use the right word for it. And there are, indeed, plenty of examples of poor American ownership (although it is not just Americans that can be bad owners in football – see Tottenham's Daniel Levy, pride of Essex, for more!)

But in the past 12 months, something has changed. Chelsea notwithstanding – that will always be a dumpster fire until they come up with a coherent strategy, hire a manager for a long-term project, and renovate the ailing Stamford Bridge – American ownership in English soccer has looked, well, good.

Wrexham's Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Birmingham's Tom Brady and J.J. Watt's Burnley have all achieved promotion from their divisions. Throw in the Leeds ownership – 49ers enterprises – and Americans are four-for-four on successful seasons. Promotion is good. It makes fans happy.

And more broadly, it could prove to be vital for the growth of the game in America, with big names operating in foreign countries showing the United States how soccer in its most traditional form works – and how to be successful at doing it.

Getty Images NewsAmerican ownership: Why it works

American ownership in European sports in a relatively recent phenomenon. It has, in fact, only broken into the mainstream consciousness over the course of the last 20 years. The Glazer Family bought Manchester United in 2005. Tom Hicks and George Gilette purchased a majority stake in Liverpool two years later.

The latter duo were booted from the club by angry fans within four years. The former have drawn the ire of supporters for their repeated mismanagement of United (although it is worth pointing out that club level decisions, not a lack of funding, have contributed to the Red Devils' decline.)

All of that set a pretty miserable table for those who followed. Celebrity culture has changed that, though. But instead of swinging big, a series of big names did perhaps the smart thing, and got involved in lower leagues. The Hollywood duo of McElhenney and Reynolds bought Wrexham in 2021. Brady invested in Birmingham in 2023. Watt became the face of Burnley – although he owns a minority stake – the same year.

And there's more. RedBird Capital, who also have a stake in a small baseball team known as the New York Yankees, are controlling owners of Milan. Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Lyon and Roma all have majority U.S.-based investment.

There's no single, sweeping generalization to be made here. United's owners are clueless. Wrexham's are creative. Bournemouth and Crystal Palace are successful and financially sustainable. Lyon and Chelsea are nightmares. But there are tangible clues as to how this can all work.

AdvertisementGettyWelcome to (a sensible) Wrexham

Wrexham, if you zoom out, have nailed it. There was plenty of reason to be skeptical when the Hollywood duo bought the club nearly five years ago. It is often forgotten that Wrexham were not their sole choice. And when it became clear that they intended to make a documentary, chronicling their ownership of the club, which would then be sold to FX and Hulu, few fans were convinced.

It seemed a vanity project of sorts. Here were a couple of guys who used the wrong word for a sport, taking on an ailing team in a forgotten post-industrial city, and packaging it into a must-watch series. Not exactly the best way to endear yourself to defeatist Brits.

Of course, the reality has been different. Wrexham weren't promoted in their first season, but they were stable. Since then, they have achieved three consecutive promotions, rising from non-league soccer all the way into the English Championship. They have made it all look rather easy, too. Welcome to Wrexham, season four, drops May 15, and the show remains a PR project of sorts. It's captivating, something that really scratches the American feel-good itch. The U.S. loves a plucky underdog.

But their success is only partly due to the documentary. Wrexham are not underdogs. Or at least, they haven't been. They are richer, more willing to spend, and better run than pretty much everyone else they have faced. Promotion, given their wealth, should be an expectation.

It helps, of course, that there are a couple of funny guys at the center of it all who have made what seems to be a sincere effort to improve the town around them. But they have money, and they're doing the basics well. Toss in a few concerts, celebrity appearances, and TikTok sponsorship, and these guys are showing how a small club can improve – regardless of where the owners are from.

Getty Images SportJ.J. Watt, Burnley, and the power of winning

Burnley have stuck to a similar formula – albeit in a different way. J.J. Watt had a Hall of Fame career in the NFL and will go down as one of the best defensive ends of all time. His ownership in Burnley, though, is financially insignificant.

Alan Pace – a senior figure in investment firm ALK Capital – owns 50 percent of the club. Michael Smith and Stuart Hunt own around 17 percent apiece. Watt, whose estimated net worth is $70 million, has not disclosed how much of Burnley he is invested in. But it is very much a minority stake.

But Burnley have been smart. No one cares about Pace, Smith or Hunt, from a PR perspective. They're guys in suits. Watt, meanwhile, is the fun one who wears baseball caps, goes to games, and interacts with the players and fans. He represented Burnley's team at 7 a side tournament TST in Cary, North Carolina last summer. He's the one that Americans know and English fans are starting to like.

This is PR mastery. Watt, like Reynolds and McElhenney, is the smiley dude who is warming to soccer, and has the kind of infectious personality that U.S. fans love. He tweeted at goalkeeper James Trafford after Burnley's historic run of clean sheets in the EFL Championship, and joked he would come out of retirement if he went the whole season without conceding a goal (Trafford went 12 games, and Watt admitted to getting a bit nervous.)

Burnley, too, are in a similar situation. Parachute payments down from the Premier League have meant that they are far richer than their competition. They have a squad filled with talent too good for the Championship. Trafford is perhaps England's long-term starting goalkeeper. Their manager, Scott Parker, has bona fide Premier League experience. Watt is the grinning face of a winning team that has very little to lose.

Getty Images SportTom Brady, celebrity, and well-timed interviews

Brady, meanwhile, is slightly different. If Wrexham and Burnley are rich relative to their competition, Birmingham are unimaginably wealthy. They are a club that has spent 57 seasons in England's top flight. In League 1, their stadium rivals only Sunderland in terms of size and facilities.

Birmingham have stumbled in recent years with a series of poor managerial appointments and financial mismanagement, bringing about a transfer embargo in the early 2010s. In 2023, they were purchased by American hedge fund manager Tom Wagner's subsidiary, Shelby Companies – yes, named after the family in the Birmingham-based Peaky Blinders – after two other takeover attempts fell through.

Brady was brought on as a minority investor. They got it badly wrong in 2023, making the baffling decision to hire Wayne Rooney, who, with two wins in 15 games, took them from Championship playoff contenders to relegation candidates. They went down without much of a fight.

Their response was to spend big. They dropped nearly $30 million last summer on new signings and have built one of the best seasons in League 1 history. Brady has not shown a deep interest in soccer, and he certainly isn't celebrating like a madman in the cheap seats. Instead, he sort of stands there in sunglasses, looking robotic, and peering over the team he had a little-to-no role in constructing.

But Brady – as has been a theme with a lot of his post-NFL career – has been shrewd in the way he has pieced together an image. It starts with a vague interest. Wagner has insisted that Brady texts him regularly about the state of the club.

"Tom is engaged with the club 365 days a year. Not a day goes by where he and I don’t FaceTime or talk or message about Birmingham," Wagner said in April.

He has appeared on English TV twice in the last seven months to spill vague platitudes about team success. He has talked about "processes" and "development." He has insisted that Brimingham are "not done yet" after achieving promotion. That NFL media training, it seems, has come in handy. But his PR presence is felt.

Cummins, Head, Starc lead Australia to victory inside two days

They claimed victory in six sessions as 34 wickets fell in fewer than 145 overs in the second-shortest Test in Australia

It only lasted two days. But it was action-packed, wicket-filled and run-rare. And in the end, Australia have the series lead. They claimed victory in six sessions as 34 wickets fell in fewer than 145 overs in the second-shortest Test in Australia. The frequency of dismissals means the unavoidable talking point will be the pitch, which was so green it was indiscernible from the outfield on day one, but it would be unfair to pin the result on the surface alone. Australia’s bowlers, especially in the latter part of the first and throughout the second innings, were accurate and incisive against a South African batting line-up. In 2022, South Africa have been dismissed for under 200 in Tests eight times, their most innings totals lower than 200 in a calendar year. In this Test match, their totals of 152 and 99 with top scores of 64 from Kyle Verreynne and 36* by Khaya Zondo were not enough.Australia also battled on the strip, which showed signs of inconsistent bounce abetted by the divots and lost four wickets in the chase, all to Kagiso Rabada. He is now the leading Test wicket-taker of the year and it will be small consolation for falling behind in a key contest. South Africa must win at least one Test to stay in contention for the World Test Championship final, while Australia lead the points table.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The damage was done in the middle session, where South Africa were reduced to 66 for 7, level on scores after conceding an equivalent lead in the morning, but without much batting to come. Zondo, playing in only his third Test, gave a reasonable account of his ability especially against the short ball but only had support from Temba Bavuma, with whom he shared a 42-run fourth-wicket stand.By the time the pair came together, South Africa were 5 for 3 and has lost Dean Elgar, lbw to Pat Cummins, Rassie van der Dussen to a Mitchell Starc beauty that seamed in at pace and snuck through the bat-pad gap to give Starc his 300th Test wicket and Sarel Erwee, caught in the gully for the second time in the match.Bavuma and Zondo batted together for 99 balls and scored 42 runs between them, many of them nervy. They were beaten at least a dozen times but there were also some signs of form, such as when Bavuma leaned into a cover drive off Cummins and then Scott Boland and when Zondo swivel-pulled Cummins behind square. They were 19 runs short of erasing the deficit when a Nathan Lyon delivery stayed a touch low and struck Bavuma on the pad. He was given out and reviewed, with replays showing it was going on to clip leg stump.Mitchell Starc becomes the 7th Australian to take 300 Test wickets•Getty Images

In the next over, Boland found Kyle Verreynne’s outside edge with a delivery that moved away slightly and Steven Smith completed the catch at second slip. Two balls after that, Boland bowled Marco Jansen with an away-seamer. On the stroke of the scheduled tea break, Starc bagged another when Keshav Maharaj nicked off. South Africa were still two runs behind. They levelled scored by the tea break, but they did not appear to be building much of a lead when Cummins removed Rabada and Anrich Nortje in successive balls. Zondo farmed the strike for much of the time Lungi Ngidi was with him but Ngidi also got a couple away and South Africa set Australia 34 to win.Earlier, Australia took the lead in the first five deliveries as Rabada completed his overnight over. Cameron Green tucked into a half-volley and drove Rabada down the ground to put the hosts ahead. Green repeated the shot two more times in Rabada’s next two overs to force him out of the attack early, but that did not work to Australia’s advantage.Marco Jansen replaced Rabada and struck twice in his first over to clip Australia’s brisk start. Green received another half-volley, off Jansen’s second ball, and he attempted a booming drive. He only managed a thick edge that flew to Keshav Maharaj at third slip. Maharaj parried the ball up and Sarel Erwee, from first slip, ran behind him to take the catch. Two balls later, Travis Head was given out caught down the leg side. Head reviewed and though there was nothing on hotspot, snicko revealed a spike that confirmed he had hit both glove and shirt. His 96-ball innings finished on 92, and ultimately, proved a significant difference between the two sides.Australia’s lead was only 30 runs at that stage, and it was up to Alex Carey and the lower order to push that past 50. Starc lofted Jansen over mid-off and pulled Nortje through mid-wicket and put on 31 with Carey for the eighth wicket. Carey ran well in his short innings, with no boundaries in his 30-ball 22, but 12 singles, two threes and a four, which he and Starc ran. They took Australia’s lead to over 60 before Ngidi was introduced after the first drinks’ break and broke through. Starc hit Ngidi’s first ball in the air through mid-on for four and then drove the last ball aerially as well. Ngidi got down low in his follow-through and completed a good return catch.A pumped-up Rabada then bounced Cummins out, with three short balls in a row. The first popped up to point and Cummins was given out but reviewed successfully. Replays showed the ball had hit the arm guard. Cummins nearly edged the second and then pulled the third to mid-wicket, where Nortje was waiting. In this next over, Rabada had Lyon caught at mid-on to finish with four wickets in the innings.

Scotland head coach Shane Burger to leave for Somerset role

It also encompassed the resignation of the entire Cricket Scotland board in 2022 after a damning report into allegations of racism. His new role at Somerset will see the former Gauteng allrounder become lead batting coach at the club.Burger said: “I have been fortunate to have coached the Scotland men’s national team for the past four years. The journey has been a rewarding one both on and off the field for this group and to have played a role in that journey is something I am incredibly proud of.”There have been many challenges thrown along the way, but we have managed to navigate our way through these and achieve some fantastic results. I am excited to be moving onto to a new adventure with Somerset where I will be taking on a different role and have no doubt it will keep developing me as a coach and person.”I would like to thank everyone who played a role in this chapter, and I cannot thank you enough for your assistance, care, and support”

Newcastle and PIF now eyeing up another teenager signing alongside Cordero

Newcastle United are now interested in signing a 19-year-old attacker alongside their heavily reported move for Malaga winger Antonio Cordero, according to a new report.

Newcastle close to signing Cordero

It emerged on Wednesday that PIF have given Eddie Howe and Newcastle the go-ahead to spend big in this summer’s transfer window. Howe reportedly spoke to Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Paul Mitchell, and CEO Darren Eales this week to discuss plans for the summer. Howe raised concerns about the current Newcastle squad, stating it had gone “stale”, and that has led to a green light to spend money.

The Howe comment that made Al-Rumayyan green light Newcastle summer spend

Howe will be delighted by the news, and that will likely help the Magpies get a deal over the line for Cordero, who they are said to be close to signing. It has been claimed from reports in Spain that Malaga winger Cordero is “getting closer” to completing a move to Newcastle with “negotiations about to be closed”.

The 18-year-old’s contract in Spain is set to expire at the end of this season, and while Malaga would like him to sign a new contract, he looks set to move to England, as Newcastle beat Arsenal and Manchester City to his signature.

Cordero is a winger, with his favoured position being out on the right, which is an area that the Magpies are lacking quality and depth in, so he will be a welcome arrival.

Newcastle now interested in signing Diao alongside Cordero

But it isn’t just Cordero who the Magpies want to sign for that right-wing position, as according to Caught Offside, Newcastle are interested in signing Assane Diao from Italian side Como.

The report states that the Magpies, along with Liverpool, are attentive to Diao as he’s scored five goals in eight Serie A games for Como since joining them in the January transfer window. The Magpies are in the market for a new right-winger, as Miguel Almiron left in January to return to the MLS, so this is a top priority to strengthen even with the likely signing of Cordero.

The 19-year-old Diao, born in Senegal but representing Spain at under-18, under-19 and under-21 levels, was of interest to Brentford during the summer, but a move didn’t work out. Diao impressed for Real Betis at the start of this season, and then he decided to move to Como, as he admitted in a recent interview that he wanted to work under manager Cesc Fabregas.

Why Como? I spoke with Fabregas, who explained the project, the vision, and what he had in mind for me and for the proper development of the team. Speaking directly with him was very important; after that conversation, I had no more doubts and chose Como.”

Diao is under contract until 2029, and if Como remain in Serie A, which they look on course to do, then it means the Magpies may have to pay a decent fee for the winger, who can also play as a centre-forward. Como reportedly paid €12 million to get him out of Spain, so the Italian side are going to want to get at least that back with probably a hefty profit to boot.

Aston Villa have already sold their own Mateta who’s a "true monster"

For the second time in as many seasons, Aston Villa suffered a heavy defeat away to Crystal Palace. This time, they were defeated 4-1 at the hands of Oliver Glasner’s side, in a very disappointing collapse.

After going into the break 1-0 down via a goal from Ismaila Sarr, Villa equalised fairly quickly after the interval thanks to a lovely goal from Morgan Rogers. However, the Eagles retook the lead just before the hour mark, then added a third and fourth, including another goal from Sarr, to seal a fantastic win for the Eagles.

It was a dismal performance from Unai Emery’s side, who struggled to handle the destructive Jean-Phillipe Mateta.

Aston Villa’s struggles against Mateta

There has not been a striker more in form in the Premier League in 2025 than Mateta. According to TNT Sport, no player in the English top flight has more goals than the Frenchman in this calendar year so far, with eight strikes.

Jean-Philippe Mateta

Unfortunately for the Villans, they were on the receiving end of Mateta’s dominant form on Tuesday night. Despite playing with three centre-backs for the first time this season, the West Midlands club couldn’t handle Mateta.

Indeed, Birmingham Live journalist John Townley gave all three of Villa’s centre-backs, Lamar Bogarde, Axel Disasi and Ezri Konsa, a 4/10 rating at full-time. He explained that the Villans backline ‘was pulled apart’ after the halftime interval, which was certainly true given the four goals they conceded.

If anything, the Palace striker’s goal highlighted the struggles that Villa experienced at the back. Mateta was able to drift into acres of space, getting onto a loose ball and firing a shot home from inside the Villa box, relatively unchallenged.

It was a baptism of fire for Emery’s side, coming up against the Premier League’s most in-form player. Frustratingly, the West Midlands side perhaps sold their own version of the Palace striker.

Aston Villa already sold their own Mateta

Ollie Watkins is a fantastic player and has been crucial for Villa this season. The England international has 13 goals and ten assists in 37 games under Emery this term.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins celebrates scoring their first goal withLeonBailey

However, he can’t do it all alone, and perhaps Villa made the wrong call in selling his understudy in January.

Jhon Duran’s move from Villa Park to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr made the Villans a fortune. He made the move to Cristiano Ronaldo’s side for upwards of £71m in the January transfer window.

However, there is no doubt that his departure has left a bit of a hole in the squad. The Colombian was scintillating for Villa, scoring 20 goals in 78 games.

However, he played just 2272 minutes in that famous Claret and Blue shirt, the equivalent of 25 full 90-minute games. He was deadly in front of goal, a “true monster” according to football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Selling Duran might seem like a strange decision on reflection, given just how good of a goalscorer he is.

However, Jamie Carragher explained in January that he thought Villa should “go against the grain” and sell their striking sensation. Of course, they did just that.

Interestingly, over the last two domestic league seasons, Duran and Mateta are actually quite similar statistically on FBref.

For example, the Frenchman averages 0.39 goal-creating actions per game, compared to 0.4 by Duran, and both average 0.25 goals per shot.

Moving Duran on in the winter transfer window was a bold call from Villa. At the start of February, Emery and co were actually linked with a move for Mateta in the summer, as per journalist Graeme Bailey.

Perhaps they could have saved themselves a fortune by keeping one of the hottest prospects in football instead.

Man City expected to make summer move for £49m player they’d agreed to sign

Manchester City are now expected to make a move for an “excellent” player during the summer transfer window, according to a new report.

Man City’s busy January transfer window

The whole of January was a busy time for City and Pep Guardiola, as the Blues’ inconsistent form in league and cup competitions has resulted in them having a much more frantic winter window than usual.

City added six new players to their squad in the last month, with Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, Juma Bah, Christian McFarlane and Nico Gonzalez all joining.

It was Gonzalez who was City’s last January transfer, as City agreed to pay the £50 million release clause in his Porto contract on deadline day. After joining City, Gonzalez stated this was “the perfect opportunity”.

“This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career,” he told the club’s media. “I am 23, and I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that. Look at the squad they have here – it’s unbelievable, full of world-class players. There isn’t a footballer in the world who would not want to be part of this set-up.”

Man City expected to make a summer move for £49m player

City’s decision to sign Gonzalez looked to have prevented them from signing Andrea Cambiaso, with whom they had reached an agreement to sign. However, according to Tuttosport relayed by Sport Witness, Man City could now look to complete the transfer of Cambiaso during the summer transfer window.

This report claims that City had found an agreement with Juventus to sign Cambiaso for €60 million and bonuses, which is roughly £49 million. It also adds that the Blues had reached an agreement on personal terms with the defender, agreeing to a four-year contract with City, doubling his current wages. However, City’s spending during January has now seen them delay the transfer of Cambiaso, and the report states that is why an official offer wasn’t made.

It is now believed that the defender will stay in Turin until after the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer, and then a move to Man City can go through. A transfer to the Etihad is likely to be agreed on similar terms that have already been agreed.

The 24-year-old has emerged on City’s radar as they search for a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker. The Italian, who has been dubbed “an excellent playmaker from deep” by analyst Ben Mattinson, can operate as a right-back as well as a left-back, making him an ideal signing for Guardiola as he likes to have players who can play in multiple positions. Signing Cambiaso in the summer may become very important, given Matheus Nunes keeps playing in that right-back spot, and it has yet to fully pay off.

Club move to sign £350k-p/w Man Utd star who INEOS will let go immediately

Manchester United could now agree to let one star leave immediately after it emerged that a fresh club had made an approach to sign him, despite the English transfer window being closed.

Man Utd and INEOS making cuts to squad

January only saw Manchester United bring in two new faces, but much of the discussions surrounded who would exit Old Trafford as Ruben Amorim looked to turn around the dreadful start to his tenure in charge of the Red Devils.

Arriving with the club firmly in the bottom half of the Premier League, the Portuguese coach has seen his side win just four of his first 13 top flight games in charge, a run of form that leaves them sitting 13th and with any dreams of European football next season all but over.

The key focus of the winter window therefore was on trimming down the squad and the wage bill, something that the club did to good effect.

Marcus Rashford joined Aston Villa in a loan move that will see the midlands outfit pay a minimum of 75% of his wages, a sum that could rise to 90% based on performances, while they also have an option to buy Manchester United’s highest earner for £40m this summer.

Meanwhile, Antony completed a loan move to Betis, where they are also thought to be paying in excess of 80% of his wages, with the pair saving Manchester United significant sums in the second half of the season.

And the cut-throat decision-making could be set to continue despite the transfer window having now shut.

INEOS willing to let Casemiro leave Man Utd immediately

That comes according to a journalist in Brazil [via Sport Witness], who points to a potential Man Utd exit for midfielder Casemiro in the coming weeks.

The Brazilian was hailed as “magnificent” by former manager Erik ten Hag, but has hardly featured for Amorim. He has not started a game in 2025 and has been an unused substitute on 12 occasions across all competitions, underlining his mammoth fall from grace.

Though he did not depart in January, a move could still be on the cards thanks to the fact that Brazil’s transfer window remains open until the end of February. That has allowed Flamengo to make a late approach to sign the decorated midfielder, and it is claimed that manager Filipe Luis “has given his approval to sign the Brazil international”.

INEOS are willing to let him depart and to make it easier to complete a deal, it is added that Manchester United are “ready to cover a large part of his salary to send him out on loan”, with Casemiro currently among the club’s highest earners on a mammoth £350,000 a week as things stand.

Though it is unclear how much the Red Devils would be willing to cover, it would likely have to be a significant sum to tempt Flamengo into trying to complete a deal for Casemiro, despite him being clearly unwanted by Amorim, who has recently taken to throwing young talent Toby Collyer on instead of his five-times Champions League winning midfielder.

Could a loan move be the best solution for all parties ahead of a permanent departure this summer?
