The Scottish Refereeing Controversy

This week the Scottish FA announced that they are putting a plan in place which would see Irish referees officiate Scottish league games this weekend. The action comes in response to the expected strike of Scotland’s grade one referees which will affect around 20 games in their Premier League and First Division. But what has caused such extreme action and how has it come to this?

The Scottish Referee’s Union agreed unanimously to strike in response to fears for their personal safety and the amount of criticism that they have received in recent months.

The pivotal moment in this saga relates to a moment on the 17th October when referee Dougie McDonald awarded Celtic a penalty against Dundee United, and then changed his mind. The decision wasn’t questioned. “The committee reached a unanimous view that the overturning of the original decision was correct” said the SFA in a statement. But what caused problems was the way that McDonald reported the incident to Celtic manager Neil Lennon after the game. McDonald claimed after the match that he was encouraged to over-turn the decision on the advice of his assistant Steven Craven who had called him over to discuss the incident. However the event was investigated further by the Scottish Football Association after linesman Steven Craven resigned from his post as a result of how the incident was handled.

In a press conference, SFA chief executive Stewart Regan announced that when McDonald gave his account of the events to the FA during the investigation his story had changed. Rather than being called over and encouraged to change his mind, McDonald went to speak to Craven ‘unprompted’ to ask whether or not he thought Dundee United’s goalkeeper has touched the ball. In regards to McDonald’s altered account of events, Regan said: “If you want to mark it down as a lie, mark it down as a lie.”

While the decision didn’t change the outcome of the game (Celtic went on to win anyway) the whole affair has left a sour taste in the mouths of Scottish football fans and has brought into question the integrity of officials. This had led to Scottish MPs calling for referee’s to declare their footballing alliances in order to protect the authority of the referee.

Aside from their game against Dundee United, Celtic have had a large part to play in the refereeing controversy. After their 3-1 Old Firm defeat, Celtic were angered that Rangers were awarded a penalty and that Lee McCulloch wasn’t sent off. As a result Celtic wrote to the Scottish FA asking for referee Willie Collum to explain his decisions, and reportedly this isn’t the first time the FA has received such a letter from Celtic. Amid all the fuss, referee Collum received threatening phone calls at his family home. But as former Scottish referee Kenny Clark explained, Celtic’s enquiries only act to damage refereeing integrity further: “If a decision is given in Celtic’s favour, people will inevitably say that’s because Celtic have been making complaints. Should a decision be made against Celtic, again they will say that’s because of the complaints Celtic have been making. It puts the match officials into something of a no-win situation.”

But of course it isn’t only Celtic who are putting referees under pressure, and it’s the increasing level of criticism and threats to themselves and their families that have caused the decision to strike. The Scottish Senior Referee’s Association announced: “statements questioning honesty and integrity have been aimed across refereeing in general and have led to an unprecedented level of abuse and genuine concerns for safety and for the ability to carry out normal family and business commitments.”

Refereeing modern football is increasingly difficult and Hamilton manager Billy Reid has voiced his concerns over the the pressure referee’s are under: “I feel for him (McDonald), but they do make mistakes. Maybe refs do that too many times, but it’s maybe due to the pressure they’re now being put under. I think it has to calm down a little for the sake of everybody.” – but of course it is easier to call for calm when it’s not your team on the wrong end of this decision.

Whether or not the strike will improve the working conditions of referees is debatable. Referee’s shouldn’t be sheltered from criticism, but the levels that it has reached is indefensible. But then it should also be remembered that the jobs of players and managers rest on the decisions of officials, and in these situations emotions and passion will be running high. There is no way that pressure in football can be relieved, and as a result referees will remain under the same scrutiny as before.

Tottenham and Arsenal to battle it out for Lazio ace

Tottenham and Arsenal are ready to open up a bidding war over Brazilian midfielder Hernanes, who has become an important player for high-flying Lazio, according to The Daily Mail.

The South American box-to-box player had an excellent debut season in Europe last term, and is part of Edy Reja’s third-placed team in Serie A.

The north London rivals and Liverpool are believed to have sent scouts to watch the Brazil international, who has won eight caps for his nation.

With Hernanes not replicating the same form this season as last, and Stefano Mauri becoming an integral player for the Rome-based giants, Lazio are ready to cash in on their £20 million rated midfielder.

Hernanes is believed to be slightly frustrated with being substituted regularly this term, and has had a couple of niggling injuries that have prevented him from stringing a run of games together.

Meanwhile, Lazio are also reportedly interested in Spurs midfielder Sandro, with a potential swap deal in the offing should Harry Redknapp be willing.

Young focused on England, not Villa future

Aston Villa winger Ashley Young refused to be drawn on his future at Villa Park ahead of England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland. The 25-year-old has been widely linked with a big-money move to English Premier League rivals Liverpool or Manchester United.

But speaking after England’s training session in London on Tuesday, he said his thoughts were focused firmly on his country’s crucial match with Switzerland at Wembley.

“To be honest I’ve not heard anything come out of the club officially so I’m not too sure what’s been going on,” Young said.

“I’m away with England and that’s what I’ve been concentrating on. We’ve got a massive game on Saturday and that’s where my thoughts are.”

“I’ve said I’ll speak to the manager and chairman at the end of the season. I’ve got to concentrate on this game and then we’ll see what happens regarding talking to them after this game.”

Young did, however, say he was behind Frenchman Gerard Houllier staying on at Villa, after it was widely reported the 63-year-old had parted ways with the Birmingham club.

When asked if he hoped the Frenchman would stay on, Young replied: “Yeah of course, he’s done great since he’s come in.”

“It’s been a difficult season for us but hopefully, fingers crossed, things will get sorted with him, with his health.”

Young also admitted that the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney on Saturday would be a major blow for England.

“Wazza’s (Rooney) a great loss, but we’ve got a lot of players in the squad to come in and play in his position,” he said.

“I’m sure the boys are raring to go and looking for the opportunity to get themselves in the team and get that starting place.”

“There’s a lot of players fighting for positions and it’ll be a good week this week. We always meet up and have a good week before the games and everyone will prepare in the right way.”

Jason Roberts adds to Joey Barton criticism

Blackburn striker Jason Roberts has blasted Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton for lashing out at Morten Gamst Pedersen during Rovers' 2-1 win at St James' Park.

Barton seems certain to face action from the FA after punching Pedersen in the stomach during the game, with Roberts defending his team-mate to the hilt.

He said:"Morten's turned round to apologise if you watch the footage to say sorry about that foul.

"We've all seen the footage, we all saw what happened, so it will be interesting to see what happens from now going on.

"Morten is a lovely lad and he's never going to say anything to be controversial or make any wild statements, but you could see he was disappointed by what happened.

"From his point of view what he was saying was anyone who was watching the video will see what happens.

The ‘P’ word remains forbidden for table-topping Swindon

Sandwiched directly between Promo and Prompt in the dictionary is a word that is totally prohibited in my house, I am sure you are aware of this word.

My beloved Swindon Town are sitting on top of the Npower League 2 table, who would have thought that after losing 3 of the first 4 games this season this would have transpired. Simply amazing. Never have I felt such pride in supporting Swindon Town. Paolo Di Canio has been such an inspiring character so far this season, catalysing our push for (insert forbidden word here).

Fans are now turning up at the County Ground expecting a result, confident in knowing that we have the depth and quality to achieve this. Disappointment seldom occurs, but rather than dwelling on missed opportunities, the lads are working hard and looking forward to the next game.

Paolo (Manager Of The Month), Benson (Player Of The Month), Richie (League 2 Player Of The Year), and the club winning Programme and Family club of the year is very inspiring. Not only does this demonstrate quality and class within League 2 but also that the club is moving forward in the right direction.

Looking Forward…

After bouncing back from defeat to local rivals Oxford United with back to back wins, Swindon now face a Crewe side unbeaten in 6 games under boss Steve Davis. Crewe are certainly contenders for the play-offs especially with teams above them dropping vital points at this pivotal stage of the season, and with young Nick Powell showing maturity beyond his years with 11 league goals this season, Swindon keeper Wes Foderingham will be kept busy.

With just one defeat in 14, Swindon will be eager to increase distance from the chasing pack. A win for Swindon will no doubt increase their chances of (insert forbidden word here). This week Swindon acquired the services of on loan midfielder Lee Holmes from Southampton. Holmes said: “It’s great to be back at Swindon and I can’t wait to get going again. They are such exciting times ahead here.” Lee has a lot to live up to, as his previous appearances for the Robins were impressive on his loan spell in 2004.

With another game right around the corner (2nd Place Torquay currently) on Tuesday night, a good result on Saturday will relieve some pressure on Swindon, with their 7 point advantage over The Gulls.

Further Forward…

It is just over a week or so until 30,000 Robins descend on the notorious Wembley Stadium. For me, receiving my tickets on Monday made the event even more realistic. I remember the play-off final against Millwall in 2010 and coming away from the match so miserable, not only did we lack passion but the desire to succeed. This time is different: great team togetherness, a passionate manager and a belief that we can achieve anything.

Venables admits that an English Manager winning the Champions League remains a distant hope

Terry Venables has admitted that he isn’t certain how long it will take for an English manager to win the Champions’ League. Since the competitions’ reformation in 1992, only a handful of English coaches have even managed in the tournament, and the man who guided England to the semi-finals of Euro ’96 has conceded that this trend is likely to continue for some time.

Speaking at Stamford Bridge in his role as an ambassador for 188BET ahead of this weekend’s Champions’ League Final, Venables, a former Chelsea midfielder who played over 200 games for the Blues, explained that although English clubs are regularly well represented in Europe, he can’t see an English manager reaching the Final, net alone winning the trophy, for several years.

“But in saying that, where do we get them from? We have got Arsenal; not English, we have got Chelsea; not English, Man City are up there; not English. So there are no English managers in there anyway,” Venables said.

Harry Redknapp performed wonders in guiding Tottenham to the quarter-finals this season, having defeated the likes of Inter and AC Milan on the way, but the Spurs boss is only the sixth coach to represent England in the tournament, following Tony Mowbray, Steve McClaren, Ray Harford, Howard Wilkinson and Sir Bobby Robson, none of whom were able to steer their sides past the first knock-out stage.

Although English managers have failed to build successful reputations on a similar scale to Italians or Spaniards in the modern game, Venables believes the true test of a coach’s ability lies their capacity to handle pressure at the wrong end of the table.

“This thing about being a good manager is, you can’t judge it by being in the top four. There are haves and have nots. A lot of these managers that have done well like Mick McCarthy, Roberto Martinez and Ian Holloway, at the bottom of the League, and I’ve got to say, and I’ve been saying it for several weeks now, that Martinez, McCarthy and Holloway have done a fantastic job of getting their teams where they are. It’s the leader, you’ve got to back the jockey sometimes. The biggest player is the manager or the coach, he is the one that is the leader, he is the one that you have got to follow; can he handle it?

“They never looked like they couldn’t [handle pressure] on the television. When they came on they seemed very confident and I thought, and as I have said again and again, the fact that you’re looking for him to sort of worry a little bit. But that never came and they showed incredible leadership throughout the bottom [of the Premiership table]. There is nothing harder than that, that is where the problem is, that is where the pressure is, it’s at the bottom.”

“Terry Venables is a 188BET ambassador. The In-Play betting specialists are offering great value odds on a host of markets for the Champions League Final. To check them out and for a free £25 bet go to www.188promo.com/terry”

Chelsea’s defence earns the October plaudits

During the month of October Chelsea only conceded one goal in five games (away at Blackburn) while up front the Blues hit the back of the net just eight times so I’m sure no one is too surprised that the candidates for the player of the month are mostly defensive players. They are as follows:

Petr Cech Branislav Ivanovic John Mikel Obi Yuri Zhirkov

Petr Cech was a colossus between the sticks, pulling off a string of saves in every game, including some big ones at home to Arsenal (one notably from a Arshavin strike) and away to Spartak where he made save after save, while also being dominant in the penalty area as a whole at Aston Villa and at home to Wolves. Indeed, the only goal he conceded in seven and half hours of football came in another good display in the win at Blackburn!

Branislav Ivanovic was the pick of the defenders last month, contributing excellent performances away at Villa and at home to Wolves, while also scoring a dramatic late headed winner at Blackburn from the right back position.

John Mikel Obi continued his consistent and assured displays in the heart of midfield, playing alongside multiple teammates due to injury and team selection and his defensive screening aided the team in their excellent defensive record during the month. His best display came away from home in the impressive win at Spartak Moscow.

Finally, Yury Zhirkov sneaks into the nominations for last month despite only playing three and a half games during October. However, he was arguably Chelsea’s best player at Villa after coming off the bench at half time, played well and scored a screamer against Spartak in his homeland and provided an assist for Florent Malouda’s opener against Wolves as well as standing up a great cross for Ivanovic’s winner at Blackburn!

If it’s hard to pick a winner from those four, try separating these goals for October’s goal of the month award!

Drogba v Arsenal Alex v Arsenal Zhirkov v Spartak Anelka v Blackburn

First up is Didier Drogba’s ‘twirly backflick’ to open the scoring against Arsenal. The goal happened so quickly that even after seeing many replays I’ve had trouble determining what he actually did. It came from an incisive break down the left hand side and was made even more delicious by the fact that Ashley Cole crossed the ball from right in front of the visiting Arsenal fans for Drogba to knock in off the inside of the near post.

Do I really need to describe Alex’s free kick in the same game, one hit so hard that he actually injured himself in taking it? Okay, I’ll give it a go… Crash, bang wallop!

Next is Yury Zhirkov’s screamer, condemning the ghosts of the Luzhniki stadium. A long ball dropped down to him running towards the edge of the penalty area and on the half volley he leathered it into the far top corner, giving the ‘keeper no chance. The technique he used was supreme!

Finally, a goal that would probably win in any other month; Anelka’s equaliser at Blackburn. Reminiscent of a Gianluca Vialli strike at Barnsley in the mid 90’s, Petr Cech launched a ball out to the left where Florent Malouda played a delicious diagonal lofted pass for Didier Drogba to nod down for an onrushing Nicolas Anelka to bury past Brad Friedel.

West Ham chief admits Liverpool could take star man

West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan has confessed that the Hammers may be unable to keep Liverpool target Alex Song at the club beyond his season-long loan move.

The Cameroonian ace completed a surprise switch to Upton Park over the summer after a difficult two years at Barcelona following his transfer from Arsenal.

Although the deal is only a temporary one, Song is not expected to return to the Camp Nou, with playing at West Ham seen as a ‘shop window’ ahead of a permanent agreement.

The Irons are already being linked with a move to tie down the 27-year-old – who has captained the club in the absence of Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble – but Liverpool are now lurking after being impressed with his form so far this term.

And Sullivan has now revealed that should Song’s aspirations prove to be too great for the London club they could be unable to keep him next year:

“First of all, I think Alex has been terrific but we haven’t seen the best of him yet.” He told the London Evening Standard. “He has admitted he needs more matches before he will be 100 per cent. I believe he could be the best player at the club.

“We have a season loan and there is no break clause. At the end of the season we will look at things. It might be he has higher aspirations than us but he may love it at West Ham. I know him and his wife love London.

“It’s very premature to talk about what we will do — I think you must look at it later in the season. We’d love him to stay but maybe a club in Turkey will offer him a crazy salary tax-free. It’s hard to compete with that financially if the player is willing to play in Turkey or Russia.”

Championship ace Flattered By Premier League Interest

Blackpool starlet Thomas Ince has claimed that whilst he is flattered by interest shown in him by major Premier League clubs, he is happy at Blackpool.

Ince has had a superb two years at Blackpool, narrowly missing out on promotion last season and looking to go one better this time out, but after the departure of Ian Holloway to Crystal Palace it may be a good time for a big club to swoop in with a bid.

Blackpool have ruled out the sale of their main man and former Liverpool youngster, but every player; especially in the Championship; has their price.

“I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for Blackpool,” Ince told the Blackpool Gazette.

“I’ve been given the chance to play week in, week out at a very high level

“It is flattering to have all that interest. It shows you are playing good football and are in good form but my focus is on playing for Blackpool.”

Jonny Hayes’ fresh injury worry couldn’t have come at a worse time for the player

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic have been left sweating on the fitness of winger Jonny Hayes, having just recently returned to the first team squad after breaking his leg in his debut season at the Hoops.

What’s the story?

Hayes suffered a season ending injury back in December against Dundee after a clash with Josh Meekings and made his first appearance in a friendly match just days ago.

Now though he’s potentially facing another spell on the sidelines after coming off in the Hoops’ latest friendly against Bohemians Prague this weekend.

The Scottish Sun now say he is facing a fight to be fit for the side’s UEFA Champions League qualifier against Alashkert later this month.

Brendan Rodgers confirmed it was a thigh strain, telling the paper:

Jonny’s thigh is a bit tight and we’ll just have to see how he is. It’s a shame for him as he started the game quite well combining with Scott Sinclair down the left.

Hopefully, we have just been a wee bit cautious but he felt his thigh when he had the shot that just went wide.

Unfortunately, it can happen when a player comes back after a long time out.

Jonny is very dynamic but hopefully it was just a twinge and it will be nothing too serious.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”259344″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch JeanClaude Billong quickfire questions”]

Will Hayes ever play a key role at Celtic?

Many were surprised to begin with when Jonny Hayes signed for the Hoops from Aberdeen last summer, despite undoubtedly being one of the division’s best players outside of the Hoops squad, shining for the Dons for a number of seasons.

He struggled to make an impact in the first half of the season and was obviously then ruled out of action in 2018.

With Patrick Roberts leaving the club this summer and Scott Sinclair losing form, the upcoming qualifiers could have been huge for him in trying to cement a place in Brendan Rodgers’ first team plans.

This latest setback could be costly when it comes to ever making it as an established Hoops star.
