Rib injury sidelines Rabada from first Test against India

Corbin Bosch replaced Kagiso Rabada in the South Africa XI, completing the seam trio alongside Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder

Firdose Moonda14-Nov-2025Kagiso Rabada sustained a rib injury during South Africa’s first training session in India on Tuesday, which ended up ruling him out of the Eden Gardens Test on the morning of the match. No decision has been made on whether he will be available for the second Test, which starts in Guwahati next week.ESPNcricinfo has established that Rabada was taken for a scan the morning after injury occurred. However, he still attended Wednesday’s training session. The extent of his participation in that session is unclear, though. He did not take part in Thursday’s optional training – which is regular practice for many senior players – and underwent a fitness test before play began on Friday morning. After experiencing discomfort during the test, a late call was made, ruling Rabada out of the Test match.Corbin Bosch, who has played three Tests prior to this tour, was named in the XI in Rabada’s place. Bosch was also part of South Africa’s Test squad in Pakistan, but did not play in either of the matches on the tour. He is now one of three seamers in South Africa’s line-up for the first Test; the other two are Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder.South Africa do not have any other seamers in their squad, after Lungi Ngidi was left out of both the Pakistan and India series in a horses-for-courses approach to playing in the subcontinent. Despite Rabada’s injury, no replacement players have been called up to the squad yet.South Africa will play another Test, followed by three ODIs and five T20Is, over the next five weeks in India. The white-ball squads have not yet been announced, but it is expected that South Africa will select as close to a first-choice T20I squad as possible, with next year’s T20 World Cup in mind. Rabada is expected to be part of that T20I squad.

Tylel Tati: Why Man Utd, PSG and more are circling Nantes' teenage 'monster' dubbed 'the next Leny Yoro'

From Ibrahima Konate winning the title with Liverpool, to William Saliba anchoring Arsenal's charge to the top of the table or Leny Yoro's big-money signing for Manchester United, French centre-backs have had a massive influence in the Premier League's recent history. Now, the race to sign Les Bleus' next great defender is on as the top clubs from England and beyond circle Tylel Tati.

Tati was an unknown even in France at the start of August, but he has quickly emerged as the country's most exciting young defender after making his full debut for Nantes aged 17 against Paris Saint-Germain on the opening day of the season. He hasn't looked back from there, starting 12 of Nantes' next 13 Ligue 1 matches as they aim to stave off the threat of relegation.

Tati is the latest talented youngster to come out of a Nantes academy where top players including Marcel Desailly, Lassana Diarra and Randal Kolo Muani all took their first steps. Standing at an imposing 6'2" while boasting strength and power that defies the norm for a player of his age, Tati also oozes technical quality. He is also a highly-coveted resource by nature of being a left-footed centre-back.

Tati's rapid rise has led to scouts from Europe's leading clubs, including Manchester United, PSG and Bayern Munich converging at the Stade de la Beaujoire for a closer look at him. With a bidding war set to commence soon, GOAL explains why Tati has set tongues wagging across the continent…

  • Where it all began

Tati was born in Champigny-sur-Marne on the outskirts of Paris on January 17, 2008, as the youngest of four children. His father, Sambou 'Bijou' Tati, is a huge figure in the local football scene in his hometown, having been the chairman of amateur club US Roissy-en-Brie for 20 years. Sambou used to dine out on the fact that he had coached Paul Pogba, but he has an even closer connection with the latest prodigy to emerge from the club.

"As club president and coach, I've seen a lot of players come through," he told . "Today, when I think that it's my son, wow… It warms my heart."

Before joining his father's club, Tati honed his skills in his local town square, pitting himself against the older children. "Everyone wanted to have him on their team, which is no surprise if you know anything about his maturity and his will to win," added Sambou Tati.

  • The big break

Tati spent time at the renowned youth academy of INF Clairefontaine, whose former students include Nicolas Anelka, Louis Saha, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe. He experienced hip problems during his time there as a result of a growth spurt, though he still caught the eye of Nantes, who had been tracking him since he was 11 years old.

His passing ability and technique stood out to Nantes scout Mohamed Sadaoui, who invited Tati to a youth tournament. His Nantes colleagues were impressed with what they saw, and Tati was subsequently invited to play for them in a friendly. Twenty minutes into the game, a staff member told Sadaoui that he had to go and sign him.

Nantes were not the only team looking at Tati, who also attracted interest from PSG. But Tati took the mature decision to resist the glamour of Ligue 1's dominant force as he felt he would develop more quickly at Nantes and signed a trainee contract on his 13th birthday.

    How it's going

Tati began playing for Nantes' Under-17s team when he was still 15, and was then promoted to the reserve team at the back end of the 2024-25 season. He helped Nantes reach the final of the U19 Championnat, where they were beaten 2-1 by PSG, though the disappointment of failing to win a youth title did not last long as Tati had still managed to impress the first-team coaches, who invited him to spend pre-season training with them.

Tati stood out in the pre-season campaign and was named in the starting XI for the first Ligue 1 game of the season, at home to PSG. The recently-crowned treble winners won 1-0, but Tati barely put a foot wrong, earning glowing reviews from the local and national press. said the teenager "was never in trouble" as he marked Goncalo Ramos out of the game ashe only time the Portugal forward got ahead of the debutant was when he caught offside.

"He played a very good match, he's calm, focused, and at 17, that's not bad," said coach Luis Castro, who has only not selected Tati this season when he was nursing a minor injury. Tati's 13 starts make him the most-used player under the age of 18 in Europe's top five leagues, while his rise has also led to an embarrassing situation for 31-year-old Serbian defender Uros Radakovic, who was signed in the summer but has played just four games, all as a substitute, due to the teenager's consistent displays.

In October Tati signed his first professional contract, tying him to Nantes until 2028 with the option to extend the agreement until 2030. But it is highly unlikely he will remain there that long. United, Arsenal, Bayern and Barcelona are just some of the clubs that have sent scouts to watch him in action, while PSG are tracking his progress too.

  • Biggest strengths

Tati used to be a midfielder, which led to him acquiring an impressive passing range and technique on the ball. He is adept at playing out from the back, while his height gives him a big advantage when it comes to fending off opponents and winning duels. The fact he is naturally left-footed means he is even more valuable as it makes him equipped to playing in a back three, playing as an inverted full-back in a back four or simply as a traditional left-sided centre-back with a licence to push into midfield.

"He is mature and remarkably composed in the face of adversity," Nantes' academy director Samuel Fenillat told newspaper"He’s an intelligent player with an excellent reading of the game. He’s always aware of his team-mates' movements. He’s a player who listens, who learns quickly."

Nantes' reserve team coach Steephane Ziani, who coached Tati until the end of last season, added: "He's one of those modern defenders; he's tall and fast enough, but he knows his strengths and he's always focused."

Maharaj back in South Africa's T20I squad for England tour

Keshav Maharaj has been recalled to South Africa’s T20I squad for their England tour after being left out of their last two shortest-format squads. The left-arm spinner, who is ranked No.1 in ODIs, missed out on the T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe and the T20Is in Australia as South Africa looked to broaden their spin base, but he has stormed back into contention and been included alongside Senuran Muthusamy for the next month’s series against England.Seamer Lizaad Williams and left-arm speedster Marco Jansen both return to the T20I squad after extended periods out of action with injury. Jansen underwent thumb surgery after being injured in the World Test Championship final in June and has not played since then, while Williams has not played since October 2024 after undergoing knee surgery.David Miller is back in South Africa’s playing group after he was given permission to miss the Australia matches due to his franchise commitments. Miller is currently playing for Northern Superchargers in the Hundred. Allrounder Donovan Ferreira is also at that competition, representing Oval Invincibles, and will join up with South Africa’s T20I squad at the conclusion of that tournament. That left no room for veteran batter Rassie van der Dussen, left-arm spinner George Linde and legspinner Nqaba Peter from the Australia T20I series. Offspinner Prenelan Subrayen, who was reported for a suspect bowling action and will undergo testing in Brisbane next week, has also been left out.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“We were experimenting with the spin-bowling allrounders in our most recent T20I series, and Keshav was always part of our broader plans,” coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement. “His return to the squad strengthens our spin options. Beyond his obvious skill with the ball, he brings calmness and leadership to the group.”South Africa will play three T20Is in England as they continue preparation for next year’s World Cup but only after a three-match ODI series, where they have stuck to the same playing group that won in Australia. Left-arm seamer Kwena Maphaka, who was due to return home to play in an A series against New Zealand, has been retained in the ODI squad as cover for Kagiso Rabada, who has an ankle injury. Rabada will be assessed in England and is expected to be available for the T20Is.”We are hopeful that he will be available for part of the ODI series,” Conrad said. “But we are prioritising T20I cricket and will take a conservative approach. We won’t rush him back.”Conrad also confirmed that team management “will continue to manage [ODI captain] Temba Bavuma’s workload in the same way we did in the ongoing series against Australia”. Bavuma, who is coming back from a hamstring injury sustained at the WTC final, played the first ODI in Australia this week and scored his eighth half-century in the format but was rested from the second match. He is scheduled to play in Sunday’s game, with the series already won 2-0.Kwena Maphaka has been retained in the ODI side as cover for Kagiso Rabada•Getty Images

This is the first set of squads that have been picked under new selection convener Patrick Moroney, who began work on August 1. Prior to Moroney’s appointment, the selection of the national team was the sole responsibility of the head coach. Moroney does not lead a panel but works with Conrad and has been keeping an eye on players and performances in the last few months.”The recent tours to Zimbabwe and Australia have been invaluable, allowing us to test different match-ups and give players a platform to perform,” Moroney said. “We saw some exciting young talent step up in Australia, proving their capabilities under pressure and with the T20 World Cup on the horizon, we now have a strong base of players to choose from. Our ODI approach will be similar to what we did in Australia, where we maintained consistency within the group to give them the best possible chance to win the series.”South Africa travel to England from Australia on August 25, with the first ODI to be played in Leeds on September 2.

Why a Tarik Skubal Trade Makes Sense for Tigers

Detroit Tigers ace lefthander Tarik Skubal cemented himself as the best pitcher in the American League by capturing his second consecutive Cy Young Award earlier in November. And yet, Skubal's name is popping up in trade rumors as MLB's hot stove heats up this winter.

Why?

Tigers‘s reported lowball extension offer to Skubal with free agency looming

Skubal, 29, will be a free agent at season‘s end in 2026. The Tigers, undoubtedly aware of the caliber of pitcher they possess and looking to get ahead of things, in November of 2024 made a contract extension offer to Skubal that his representation, bank-breaking agent Scott Boras, deemed "non-competitive." This past month, with Skubal's '26 free agency still looming and his price tag soaring ever higher on the heels of back-to-back Cy Young Award-winning campaigns, the Tigers reportedly made another offer to the ace lefthander, but the two sides weren't close. The apparent negotiations gulf between Skubal and the Tigers has opened the door to a trade.

Why a Skubal trade makes sense for the Tigers

Skubal has posted back-to-back seasons with a sub-3.00 ERA and 220-plus strikeouts with fewer than 40 walks in 190-plus innings. He's one of the last truly dominant aces in baseball in a bullpen-heavy era where the type starter isn't as prevalent as in past years. MLB has never seen a free agent pitcher command a contract at—or north of—$400 million.

There's every reason to believe that Skubal could become the first.

Represented by Boras, it's very likely that Skubal will hit free agency. Boras is fresh off of an offseason in which he helped Juan Soto land the richest contract for a position player in baseball history. For several million reasons, he'd love to see Skubal surpass Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto's $325 million deal next winter, meaning that Boras clients would own the largest contracts among both position players and pitchers.

And while Boras told reporters he's "prepared to listen" to overtures from Tigers principal owner Chris Ilitch and president of baseball operations Scott Harris in terms of a pre-free agency Skubal contract, a deal seems unlikely to materialize before the star pitcher hits the open market, given the way Boras has traditionally done business. When you consider the Tigers‘ resources, it's reasonable to think that Skubal hitting the open market could spell doom for its chances of retaining the ace. Of the 12 teams that made the postseason in 2025, Detroit's payroll ranked ninth. The Tigers again project to have a payroll that ranks in the bottom half of the league's 30 teams. As great as Skubal is, would the Tigers be willing to allocate a hefty chunk of that payroll to one player?

Should Skubal walk in free agency in '26, Detroit would likely recoup a draft pick in terms of compensation.

That's where a trade potentially factors in.

Given how good he is, Skubal could command a massive haul of prospects as part of a trade return. After the 2025 trade deadline, Detroit's farm system checked in as the sixth-best in MLB.com's rankings. The Tigers boast four top-100 prospects, but none of them are pitchers. In fact, of the Tigers's top-10 prospects, just one of them is a pitcher. Perhaps the Tigers, already armed with one of baseball's youngest rosters, lean further into a youth movement, particularly on the pitching side, to capitalize on the potential loss of Skubal?

If so, there's an argument about the best time to trade Skubal would be. This winter, giving contending teams a potential alternative against the backdrop of a solid starting pitching free agent market that lacks a true ace? Or at the '26 trade deadline, giving the (hopefully) contending Tigers a chance to assess how its season is going, and, potentially convince Skubal to remain in Detroit without him testing the open market.

It's a bit of a precarious position for the Tigers front office. Such is the business of baseball.

Ten moments that have made the WBBL

A broken bat, a crazy run out, and a multiple Grand Slam winner. What else makes the list?

Andrew McGlashan24-Oct-2024Meg Lanning (and Ash Barty) on opening dayIt all began at Junction Oval on December 5, 2015. Melbourne Stars faced Brisbane Heat in back-to-back games on the same day in front of a crowd of 1500. Some players watched on sat in camping chairs. A number of names that remain stars of Australian cricket were on show: Beth Mooney opened alongside Grace Harris for Heat, who had Jess Jonassen at No. 3, while Meg Lanning made 165 off 114 balls across the two matches as Stars came out winners in both. However, in the middle-order for Heat, there is another name which stood out: Ash Barty. Now a retired multiple Grand Slam winner, at the time Barty was also out of tennis, having stepped away in 2014 aged 18 to play cricket. On the opening day of WBBL, she impressed with 39 off 27 balls in the first match before falling to Nat Sciver-Brunt. “It truly was an amazing period of my life,” she said in 2019. “I met an amazing group of people who couldn’t care less whether I could hit a tennis ball or not. They accepted me, and they got to know Ash Barty.” That opening innings would prove to be the high point for Barty who made 68 runs in nine matches – her major sporting success was yet to come. The first centuryThis won’t be the only time Grace Harris is mentioned in this piece. In the eighth match of the inaugural season, a few months after her international debut, she struck the competition’s first century with 103 off 55 balls against Sydney Sixers at Aquinas College in Perth. She went from her fifty to her hundred in just 22 deliveries. “I was just after ice cream,” Harris joked after the innings. “When I hit the century, Mooney came down the wicket and it didn’t really click to begin with, and then she said that I had made it because everyone was standing up, and I just said, ‘Ice cream! Ice cream!'” To cap off her day, Harris claimed 4 for 15 from two overs. She remains the only player to have scored a century and taken four wickets in a WBBL match.Harmanpreet’s landmark signingIt is well-known that India’s premier male cricketers do not appear in T20 leagues outside of the IPL, but that’s not the case in the women’s game – the upcoming season will see a record number of India names in the WBBL. In mid-2016, Harmanpreet Kaur became the first India player to join the league when she signed for Sydney Thunder. “Being the first player from my country to sign a contract for a BBL club is one of my best moments,” she said at the time. During her first season, she made 310 runs in 13 innings which included a 26-ball 56 against Heat. In the 2021 season, she was Player of the Tournament.Harmanpreet Kaur was the first Indian player to join an overseas league•Getty ImagesPushing the boundariesHere comes Grace again. By 2018, Sophie Devine (48) and Ash Gardner (47) had both gone under the 50-ball mark with centuries. Against Stars at the Gabba, Harris raised the bar further with a blistering 42-ball display which included 13 fours and six sixes. Remarkably, this came in a chase of just 133 as she made 73% of the total herself with Mooney watching on from the other end. With one run needed, Harris was on 95 and set off for the winning run but was sent back by Mooney. Three balls later, she launched Alana King down the ground for six to become the first player with multiple WBBL tons. “I’d told her that we weren’t running again and she finally got there in the end,” Mooney said.Devine’s doubleAs mentioned above, Devine had already left a mark on the WBBL but against Stars at Adelaide Oval, she produced what remains a one-off all-round starrer in the competition’s history: the only time a player has scored a half-century and taken a five-wicket haul. She had been within touching distance of matching Harris with two WBBL hundreds when she fell for 95 with an over to go, but that was only half the job done. With ball in hand, she removed four of Stars’ top six and completed her haul by claiming Nicola Hancock. semi-final run outIt is one of the iconic moments in WBBL history. It had already been a dramatic day with the first semi-final decided by a stunning boundary catch from Haidee Birkett. But the extraordinary three-player run out to force a Super Over in the second match was at another level. With three needed off the last ball, Sophie Molineux, who had batted throughout Melbourne Renegades’ chase, sliced over point and the ball appeared destined for the rope. “She’s got a four,” screamed commentator Jason Richardson. Then came a desperate dive from Erin Burns that flicked the ball back to Sarah Aley, who in turn hurled the return to Alyssa Healy. But the run-out chance was at the bowler’s end. Healy collected and in one motion spun around with a gloveless right hand and threw down the stumps. “In terms of a team play, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more special one in the context of the match and what effect it had on the game,” Ellyse Perry said. Burns added: “It was one of those moments where everything just seemed to fit perfectly. To tap it back but then Sarah to come around and the perfect throw into Midge and then to spin around no look at the stumps and throw down the other end is pretty awesome.”Ellyse Perry celebrates Sophie Molineux’s extraordinary run-out•Getty ImagesMooney, the back-to-back finals heroMooney is the WBBL’s leading run-scorer heading into the tenth season. Before her move to Perth Scorchers, she was central in Heat’s consecutive titles in the 2018-19 and 2019-2020 seasons. In the first of those, a week after the epic semi-final mentioned above, in a season where runs had not flowed to her usual standards, she defied a sweltering Sydney day while overcome effects of the flu with 65 off 46 balls to put Heat on course against Sixers. “I plonked myself in the ice bath and was a bit nervous towards the end, I couldn’t really watch,” Mooney said. The following season she was at it again, anchoring a bigger chase against Adelaide Strikers with 56 off 45 balls.Thunder win in the bubbleSomehow, the 2020 WBBL season was completed despite Covid. Played entirely in Sydney, it was not an edition remembered too fondly by a number of players with all the squads housed in a hotel bubble at the Olympic Park amid tight restrictions. But, as with much in that Australian season, it was a remarkable show of adaptability and resilience. It also concluded with a memorable result in the final where Thunder, who had produced a stunning turnaround in the semi-final against Heat, toppled Stars – one of the standout teams of the competition – by seven wickets having restricted them to just 86. Shabnim Ismail, who claimed the key wicket of Lanning, and Sammy-Jo Johnson combined to take 4 for 23 from eight overs.Broken bat? No worries for Grace Harris•Getty ImagesGarth’s powerplay masterclassAgainst Thunder in 2021, pace bowler Kim Garth produced one of the more remarkable performances seen in T20s. In the powerplay, she produced figures of 3-3-0-3 to put Stars on course to defend a low total. Garth removed Tahlia Wilson and Phoebe Litchfield in her first over, and then produced another maiden over to Smriti Mandhana. At the start of her third, she had Corinne Hall taken at slip before closing the spell with five more dots. By the time she returned for the 20th over, Stars had breathing space with 25 to defend.Harris’ broken bat”Stuff it, I’ll still hit it.” It has gone down as an immortal phrase from Grace Harris. Preparing to face up to Piepa Clearly, Harris noticed her bat handle was broken. But instead of waiting for a new one, she just got on with it. Harris launched the ball over long-on for a 72-metre six, the handle snapping away from the blade in the process to produce an iconic image that went viral. It was part of another astonishing WBBL display from Harris, who piled up a tournament-high 136 off 59 deliveries with a record 11 sixes. “When you get in the zone, you just get in the zone,” she said modestly.

Hot Mic Caught Tigers Announcer's Expletive-Filled Rant After Heartbreaking ALDS Loss

An end to your season is one thing, but falling in 15 innings during a winner-take-all postseason game is another.

Tigers fans suffered that unfortunate reality Friday when they fell 3-2 to the Mariners in Seattle in a marathon Game 5 of the American League Division Series. Seattle will now face the Blue Jays in the AL Championship Series. And the Tigers, well, they're joining David Ortiz with the Yankees in Cancún.

It was a heartbreaking end of the season for Detroit, who couldn't capitalize on another strong outing from their ace Tarik Skubal, although nobody could have expected the game would have lasted a full nine innings after his night was done. The game bled early into Saturday morning on the East Coast as the Mariners earned their first trip to the ALCS since 2001. Tigers play-by-play man Dan Dickerson was on the radio call, and captured the emotions of every Detroit fan as he was caught on a hot mic after the devastating loss.

"We'll be back to talk about it after this on the Detroit Tigers radio network," Dickerson said before he thought he was off the air. The broadcast stayed on the air and a hilarious rant ensued at what was after 1 a.m. in the morning in Detroit. "I don't have to do a game [recap], ah f—. F— this game recap. Oh, I'm sorry, was that out loud?" He continued on the airwaves.

Listen to Dickerson's quick rant after the wild loss below. Note, the clip does include profanity:

Although his comments appeared that they weren't supposed to hit public ears, it perfectly encapsulated the night for the Tigers as their offense slowed once again other than Kerry Carpenter. Hopefully Dickerson was able to get some rest after he gave the unwanted game recap.
